This year we have been involved with numerous activities that
connect us to others — highly important as we strive to provide
best educational practices for our students and clients, as well
as the soundest resources for our parents and staff.
ISAS Reaccreditation 10-Year Site Visit
Nineteen representatives from Independent Schools
Association of the Southwest (ISAS) visited Shelton in late
September, culminating a year-long self-assessment by Shelton
for reaccreditation by ISAS. The ISAS team, all members from
various other ISAS private schools, met with Shelton faculty,
staff, administration, board, and parent constituents to discuss
findings of an organizational self-study. We have received
ISAS’ preliminary report that highly commends Shelton for
its operations. Shelton ISAS team leaders are evaluating the
recommendations for improvement as we await a final report.
This rigorous and extensive process will be the impetus for
healthy change as we move toward Shelton’s 40th anniversary.
I am grateful to all who were involved in this self-examination,
as it provides the opportunity for us to grow in meaningful ways.
Shelton has been accredited by ISAS since 2004-05.
Collaboration with Local and
National Organizations
Shelton has collaborated with
numerous entities this fall to share
information and resources. In
September we linked with 16 other
area private schools as part of
Common Ground, a joint speaker
series. We sponsored best-selling
author Po Bronson in a program
for parents.
Po Bronson
In October, during Dyslexia Awareness Month, we joined with
Learning Ally, Dallas Branch International Dyslexia Association,
Decoding Dyslexia - TX, and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for
Children / Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning
Disorders to host a showing of The Big Picture — Rethinking
Dyslexia at the Angelika movie theater in Plano. The movie,
which played at eight other cities, captured the myths, stigmas
and truths about dyslexia, and showed how we can create
a positive culture for dyslexic learners. On hand were Andrew
Friedman, CEO of Learning Ally, and Geraldine (Tincy) Miller,
Representative District 12, Texas State Board of Education.
I value our partnerships with these and other organizations.
I encourage Shelton’s involvement in these and other
joint-ventures as we seek to put our stamp where it matters
most — the lives of our students.

Development Doings
Theresa Bruno, CRFE, Director of Development
Supporting Shelton
Fall is a wonderful time of year at Shelton School. Walk onto the
Shelton campus on any school day and you will find the halls
filled with students, faculty and staff who are excited about the
possibilities. A Shelton education offers our students extraordinary
opportunities for learning with each day bringing new and
exciting challenges.
Shelton remains committed to our mission of educating learningdifferent students in an environment that is unique with programs
tailored to help them succeed. Like most private schools, Shelton
relies completely on tuition revenue and donations for support.
Fundraising will always be necessary to help fund expenditures
that meet the changing needs and challenges of our Shelton
community.
Our continued success is made possible through the generous
support of our committed Shelton community. We are grateful for
your support and thank you for being part of our Shelton family.

2013-2014 Now is the Time – To Make a
Difference Annual Fund Drive
The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of Shelton’s
fundraising efforts and everyone is encouraged to
participate. Gifts to Shelton’s Annual Fund Drive
provide vital income to balance Shelton’s operating
budget and help bridge the gap between tuition
revenue and the actual cost of operating the
school.
Annual Fund support makes a difference in our
programs and your generosity will help Shelton
continue to provide the best possible opportunities
for all our students. Laura and G. Ellison Hurt and
Lucy and Don Witte are the parent co-chairs of the
Annual Fund Drive.

Endowment Enters Phase II
Shelton School Kicks Off Phase II of $10M Endowment Campaign — Assuring the Future
Shelton School recently launched
Phase II of the $10,000,000
Assuring the Future Endowment
Campaign. The Ed Heffernan
Family made a very generous $1M
commitment as a cornerstone
gift to this important phase of the campaign. Shelton School is
grateful for this gift and appreciates the Heffernan Family for
recognizing the need for a stronger endowment and helping us
continue to grow this fund in perpetuity.
Our goal is to reach $10M in commitments by 2016 in
celebration of Shelton’s 40th Anniversary. During the year, we
will actively solicit members of our community for their support
to help us reach our goal. You can make a commitment to
Shelton’s Endowment Fund today and fulfill your pledge over a
period of years.
Growth of the Shelton School Endowment Fund is one of the
school’s highest priorities.
While Annual Fund donations help us with today’s operating
expenses, Shelton’s Endowment is a permanent, self-sustaining
source of funding that provides a steady annual income for
future use. A large Endowment Fund helps assure, in good
economic times and bad, that the school will remain financially
strong and viable.
Today, Shelton School stands at the very pinnacle of success.
The time has come to invest in Shelton School’s future and
ensure continued excellence for generations to come. We
are asking you to partner with us by making a contribution to
Shelton’s Endowment Fund today! Income generated from
Shelton’s Endowment will be used to support:
• Staff Salaries and Benefits
• Financial Aid
• Enhanced Curriculum Programs and Improved Facilities
• Community Outreach/Research
The Development Office would be delighted to meet with
you to answer any questions or discuss endowment
opportunities. Please call Suzanne Stell, Executive Director or
Theresa Bruno, Director of Development at Ext. 2230 or email
[email protected] for further information.

Outreach / Training Offerings
Nancy Coffman, M.S., LDT, CALT, QI, Director of Outreach / Training
Making a Difference in
Public School Systems
Shelton School is a private
school for students with
dyslexia in Dallas, Texas.
However, Shelton also
makes a difference in the
lives of children with dyslexia
and related disorders in
public school systems in
Alabama, Mississippi and
Texas through our endorsed
International Dyslexia
Association (IDA), International Multisensory Language
Education Council (IMSLEC) accredited training courses.
In July 2009, two school systems in Alabama contracted
with Shelton to provide training to their teachers. In 2010
the Alabama State Department of Education (SDOE)
decided that it wanted to serve students with dyslexia and
related disorders throughout the state public school system.
Seeing teachers as their greatest resource, the department
sought training that would empower selected teachers
to serve those students. As of August 2013, 131 teachers
have completed or will be completing training through the
SDOE or district programs to provide therapy level training in
multisensory structured language education.
In August 2013, the Oxford, Mississippi City School System
contracted with Shelton to offer therapy level training
to teachers from the surrounding area. In Texas, two
public school systems – Keller Independent Schools and
Grapevine/Colleyville Independent Schools – contracted
Alabama students are all smiles over “a”

with Shelton to provide training. To date, through contracts
with public school systems in the three mentioned states,
218 teachers have been trained or are in training through
SDOE or district programs to provide therapy level training in
multisensory structured language education.
Current research tells us that if students are given strong,
structured core reading instruction, fewer will struggle with
reading. If those who struggle receive short term, small
group instruction in their area of difficulty, fewer will need
intensive small group instruction. That intensive small group
instruction is what we refer to as multisensory structured
language (MSL) education. Following that logic, if teachers
have the knowledge and skills to deliver the intensive
MSL intervention, they can also address the needs of the
students who need basic instruction and those who need
short term support.
These public school systems have invested in the intensive
training of 218 teachers. Shelton’s next goal is to determine
how many students these teachers serve each year in
intensive interventions. If each of them serves two students
(a very low estimate) they would serve 436 students each
year. Given that these public school teachers represent
general classroom teachers, inclusion teachers, reading
coaches as well as special education teachers, their
service goes far beyond intensive intervention. They work
in small groups as well as with full classes, incorporating
their knowledge in every situation. The number that we
will never know is the number of students who never know
failure because their teachers are more informed and more
knowledgeable.
Shelton Outreach Is Everywhere
Joyce S. Pickering, Hum.D., Shelton Executive Director Emerita
The Shelton Outreach / Training
Center began offering services
to the community in 1991. They
include the following:
•Saturday Scholars and Summer Scholars Program
for reading remediation
•Summer Program
•Teacher Training in specific programs delivered to
students with learning differences
•Montessori teacher training
•Workshops and conference presentations on services
for students with Learning Differences (LD) and Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Summer Courses
Shelton instructors trained 407 teachers in various courses in
Summer 2013. The knowledge and expertise of Shelton are
being disseminated widely through these training courses.
Shelton Scholars
The Shelton Scholars Program, coordinated by John Hodges,
serves approximately 30 students each semester and 70 in
the summer. This is a lower cost alternative to private reading
therapy. Summer Scholars was also offered at J.W. Ray
Elementary School (Dallas ISD) with sponsorship by Church of
the Incarnation’s Reading Buddies program.
•Collaboration with colleges and universities for credit
classes toward a master’s degree
•Online training
•Educational resources and materials
Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) Therapy
Nancy Coffman, the director of the Outreach / Training Center
has been training across the state of Alabama (see p. 6).
Teachers are receiving coursework and practicum supervision in
Take Flight curriculum, an approach written at the Texas Scottish
Rite Hospital for Children for teaching reading to students who
need a multisensory structured language method. The goal in
Alabama is to have a trained Academic Language Therapist
in every school, a lofty and unique goal for a state educational
system.
Teachers in Mississippi and Arkansas, as well as Texas teachers
from Grapevine/Colleyville and Midland, have also been
trained by Nancy Coffman. Chris Bedenbaugh has also taken
this type of training to Keller ISD.
Dr. Joyce Pickering has delivered training at Shelton in the
Sequential English Education (SEE) approach to teachers
from Texas, Arkansas, Maryland, and New Mexico.

Workshops and Seminars
Beyond these intensive training courses, Shelton staff travel to
give workshops and seminars, this past year in Spain, Alaska,
New Jersey, Illinois, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Washington state, New
Mexico and Texas. National presentations have been given at
the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and AMS.
Reading Remediation a Core Element of Outreach
Shelton provides training and supervision of reading remediation
programs to the staff of Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT), Dallas
Juvenile Justice System, and J.W. Ray. We are especially proud
of LIFT’s first SEE graduates, who were recognized November 18
for their two-year commitment to reading.
The Montessori Method
Shelton offers training in the Montessori method at both the
Early Childhood and Elementary Level, delivered by Shelton
Montessori teachers and other invited experts. Dr. Pickering
and Pauline Novak co-direct the Shelton Montessori Training
Course, which is accredited by American Montessori Society
(AMS) / Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education
(MACTE). For 20 years, Shelton has offered the Montessori
Applied to Children At Risk (MACAR) course. In Summer 2013,
46 teachers from all over the United States attended this training
provided by Shelton staff members Dr. Pickering, Amy Kelton,
Sue Cantrell, Casey Barnett, and Rob Kelton.

Shelton Evaluation Center
Laure Ames, Ph.D., Director
The Shelton Evaluation Center has been very busy over the
summer and then into the fall of this year. We are blessed to
have such wonderful clients. It can be challenging to raise a
child with learning difficulties, and it is a privilege to help our
clients navigate that road. When we evaluate a client through
either a psychoeducational, neuropsychological, psychological,
Autism Spectrum Disorder, and / or ADHD evaluations, our goal
is twofold. First, we work to obtain a comprehensive picture of
the client’s functioning so that we can make recommendations
that will facilitate success at home and in school. Second, and
most important, our goal is that clients leave this Center feeling
understood and hopeful.
We couldn’t do the work that we do without
our experienced staff. Susan Fleming, Ph.D.,
the former director of the Shelton Evaluation
Center before moving to semi-retirement in
2009, officially retired this year. She is greatly
missed, but her commitment to children who
learn differently lives on here. Joni Williams
is our administrative assistant and the first
voice one hears when calling the Center.
Her compassion for the families we serve
is unwavering. Jacquelyn Pack, Ph.D. is a
licensed psychologist who has been at Shelton
since 2011. Prior to Shelton, Dr. Pack worked
for 25 years in a variety of settings conducting
psychoeducational, neuropsychological,
and forensic evaluations of children and
adolescents. She has specialized in the
assessment of preschool children and children
with Autism Spectrum Disorders. She brings
experience from rural and urban school
districts, private practice, and
the juvenile justice system.
Stephanie McCain, M.A. has
been at the Shelton Evaluation
Center since 2006. She is a
Licensed Psychological Associate
and a Licensed Professional
Counselor. Stephanie has a
broad understanding of testing
and is a valued member of
our team. Mary Dryden, M.A.
joined our staff this fall. Mary is a
Licensed Psychological Associate
and a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. She comes to us
from a large public school system and has extensive experience
conducting evaluations in the public schools to determine
special education eligibility for learning disability, Autism
Spectrum Disorder, and emotional disturbance.
The Shelton Evaluation Center is unique in the Dallas area
because our experienced staff is capable of offering multiple
kinds of evaluations and integrating the information from these
different evaluations. Please call Ext. 2244 if you have any
questions about how we may work together in order to best
understand your children.

Committee, led by Ashleigh Price, pulled off another successful
Halloween Carnival for Shelton fifth-graders this year. They
are now busy planning the Upper School’s Fifth Annual Winter
Formal, to be held at the Dallas World Aquarium in February.
The Pride and Patriotism Committee, led by Brandon Douglas,
finished a fantastic Homecoming Week, capped off by a
wonderful dance at the Eisemann Center. They also planned a
sumptious Thanksgiving Feast and Teacher Appreciation Week.
Finally, the Energy and
Environment Committee,
led by senior Anders
Vaughan, has kicked
off another year of the
Recycling Club. They
are also planning bake

Shelton Success Goes Everywhere
We share a great amount of Shelton Pride when we recount
the success of our recent graduates. The Class of 2013
graduated 63 seniors, the largest group ever in the school’s
history. These graduates were accepted at 128 colleges and
universities. As a group, they were offered $4,762,000 in meritbased scholarships that included academics and test scores.
Jacob Goldfine was valedictorian of the class. He is attending
Clark University in Worcester, MA, majoring in chemistry and
theater. When asked the best
advice he had received, and
from whom, he answered,
“Organize, organize, organize
– this I learned at Shelton.” He
said his way of changing the
world would be “one step at
a time.” When asked about
his following on Facebook
or Twitter, his response was,
“Don’t do Facebook. Don’t
do Twitter.” He is currently
assistant stage manager for a
theater production at Clark.
André Dowd, Class of 2007,
now director of public relations
and communications for
ShowBiz Cinemas, returned
to campus to deliver the
commencement address.
Diagnosed with dyslexia and
ADHD in kindergarten, André
said he has learned to face
any challenge with one word:
enthusiasm. “Enthusiasm can
make an ordinary person
great.” He also said, “A nation’s
success is in direct proportion
to the quality of its education
– the teachers of Shelton are the unsung heroes and heroines
of that success.” André is a new member of Shelton’s Alumni
Executive Board.
We look forward to following these Shelton graduates with their
life success stories. Their hopes and dreams are scattered in as
many directions as their mortarboards were with the Shelton
hat toss at graduation.
Barrett Cole was salutatorian of the class. She is currently
attending Southern Methodist University, with a triple major
in human rights, religious studies and environmental studies.
A Hunt Scholar and New Century Scholar, Barrett was one
of 20 freshmen selected to be an emerging leader. She is
the McElvaney Vice President of Community Service. In her
remarks to her fellow seniors, Barrett told the group to “Work
hard, dream big, serve others, and laugh often.” Barrett
shared that “The greatest blessing in my life the past few years
has come in the form of serving others. Dancing used to be
my passion. When I came
to the realization that no
one was going to want a
5’ 10” ballerina, I felt selfish
that I could not have what
I wanted. I learned through
community service that being
selfless instead was much
more satisfying. I have learned
I can share my heart and soul
with the community as my
stage. I might not be standing
in front of large audiences
and hearing the applause,
but I see the smiles and dignity
of those whom I can serve.”

The Health and Optimism Provided with Exercise
Joyce S. Pickering, Hum.D., Shelton Executive Director Emerita
Enhancing Educational Achievement: Reducing Effects of ADHD and Learning Differences with Exercise
The Health and Optimism Provided with Exercise (HOPE) Study
Shelton School has been conducting research on the treatment
of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) since 2003. In
our first study in collaboration with the University of Texas-Dallas
Center for BrainHealth and the University of Texas Southwestern
Medical School, cognitive approaches to non-medication
treatment were explored.
In 2012 Shelton received grants from the Discovery Foundation
and Communities Foundation of Texas for a two-year research
study on the effects of strenuous and regular exercise on
learning, memory and attention. Dr.
Carroll Hughes is lead researcher of
the project.
There is a strong need for
non-medication alternatives
for the treatment of ADHD
and enhancing educational
achievement for children and
adolescents with different types
of learning disabilities/differences
(LD). Recent research suggests
that aerobic exercise may be a
potential such treatment based
on the increased release of Brain
Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF)
and brain neurotransmitters that
accompanies vigorous exercise.
ADHD is one of the most prevalent
childhood disorders to cause social
and academic impairment, with estimates of the general
population ranging from some 2-5% (Costello et al., 1996; Shaffer
et al., 1996).
Statistics in 2006 seemed to suggest that boys were more
likely than girls to be diagnosed with ADHD, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, data
from 2010 suggests that the number of girls with ADHD is greater
than previously believed, asserts 4-ADHD.com. Boys and girls
manifest ADHD differently. Girls are more likely to manifest
symptoms that are less overt. Boys, in contrast, more commonly
manifest the typical hyperactive and disruptive behavior traits
associated with ADHD, according to a survey published in 2004
in Medscape General Medicine and consequently more likely
to be diagnosed with the disorder. By and large, girls with ADHD
have greater difficulty than boys staying focused, and are more
likely to have difficulties developing interpersonal skills. As such,
boys with ADHD tend to do better in school or have relatively
smoother social interactions with friends and family than girls.
Boys with ADHD are less likely to manifest changes to their self20

esteem after being diagnosed with the disorder. On the other
hand, girls displayed a higher probability of having self-esteem
issues prior to being diagnosed with ADHD, explains 4-ADHD.
com. Further, it is now recognized that the disorder follows many
into adulthood. Clearly, more attention is needed for research
on the effects of ADHD for girls. Females with a LD also appear
to be at more risk as described next.
Follow-up studies of individuals with LD during the initial post
school years consistently show that males are employed at a
higher rate than females (Edgar,
1995; Sitlington & Frank, 1990;
Wagner et al., 1992). Edgar’s
study of two cohorts of graduates
from Washington State schools
revealed that females with LD
were employed at a lower rate
than both males with LD and
nondisabled females. This in part
is explained by the phenomenon
of early parenthood: females with
LD appeared to have children at
a younger age and at twice the
rate as nondisabled females and
to receive more public assistance.
Edgar (1995, p. 296) concluded
that “females with LD are at risk
for becoming mothers at an early
age without benefit of a supportive
partner or financial resources.” The
risk for females with LD is an amalgam of societal and disability
factors that few studies have addressed.
Studies are showing positive relationships between physical
exercise and many aspects of ADHD behavior related to
school performance. Etnier (1997) in a review of 134 studies,
found a positive association between physical education (PE)
and cognitive performance. Colcombe (2003) in a review
of 18 studies found aerobic exercise and strength training in
combination to improve performance more than either one
alone. They concluded that 30 minutes of exercise appeared
to produce the best results and this was also reported by Coe
(2006). A different review of 44 studies showed significant
positive relationship between physical activity and cognitive
function in children (Sibley, 2003). Different studies of the impact
of PE on academic performance are also positive (Field, 2001;
Oh, 2003). The California Department of Education in a 2001
study of nearly one million students (grades 5, 7, 9) showed a
positive correlation between levels of fitness and standardized
test scores in math and reading. Castelli (2007), in a study of 259

third- and fifth-graders, found similar positive correlation. All
these studies suggest a positive effect of aerobic exercise on
academic performance.
We are conducting a randomized control trial (RCT) using
aerobic exercise as a non-medication intervention for children
with ADHD and/or LD. This study will attempt to improve key
symptoms of ADHD and LD related to attention, inhibition, and
memory, all components of executive function known to be
impaired in children with ADHD and LD, yet essential for school
performance and successful psychosocial functioning. Offering
an intervention targeting executive functioning is critical for
the young school age group that may benefit most from early
intervention. Using an intervention that optimizes the immediate
benefit of exercise and exertion combined with challenging
academic mental activity while engaged in the classroom is an
innovative approach not previously tested. It is important to show
that intervention is as effective for females as males.
We have completed a semester pilot study with anecdotal
evidence of positive results. Some 40 students are in the active
participant and wait list groups. Data should be available in
January 2014.

for a brand new facility that will house state-of-the-art weights,
cardio equipment, and training rooms. We are thrilled that our
athletes will soon be able to begin training in the new 4100
square foot facility located at 300 N. Coit Road, just under two
miles from Shelton’s campus. We have also added a certified
athletic trainer as part of our athletic program expansion.
Faculty and staff will also be able to enjoy the facility, adding
to our Shelton wellness endeavors. Our thanks go to 27 Shelton

Since 1976, Shelton has been blessed with gifts that have helped
us make the difference in a student’s life. We are grateful to all
who have given a gift of any type. No return on investment
will ever be greater than that of a child’s education.

Delphi is a small town in the mountains of Greece where the famous oracle of
Apollo supposedly took place, announcing the future. It is a symbol for seeking to
know and shape the future.
To honor those individuals who seek to shape the future of Shelton School, the
Delphi Society was established in 2003. The Society recognizes and thanks alumni
and friends of Shelton who have created provisions in their wills or estate plans to
benefit Shelton School.

New Faces On Board
We welcome four new trustees this year and are grateful for the new ideas and contributions they bring to the entire Shelton organization:
Charles G. Dannis – parent to Dutch Dannis, senior. Founder of
Crosson Dannis, Inc., Mr. Dannis has a wealth of experience as
a real estate appraiser and consultant. He is the author of many
articles and the former host of a weekly talk radio show, “The Real
Estate Hour.”
David T. Helffrich, Jr. – parent to Colby Helffrich, Shelton graduate,
and two other grown children. Mr. Helffrich is senior vice president
of engineering with McAfee, Inc. He has 29 years’ experience in
enterprise software development for the security and application
development markets.
Christopher K. Dreiling, M.D. – parent to Dashiell, second-grader,
and Greer Dreiling, Early Childhood. Dr. Dreiling is a pediatrician
with Pediatric Associates of Dallas. His community interests
include Dallas International Film Festival and the Dallas Symphony
Orchestra. Dr. Dreiling is the official doctor of “The Hardline” with
91.7 KXT, 1310 The Ticket.
Patricia A. Pace – parent to Jonathan Pace, Shelton graduate,
and a grown daughter. Mrs. Pace divides her time between Frisco
and Florida. She is a property manager with a series of investment
properties. She co-founded Jonathan’s Stage, a 501 (c) (3) that
supports children with leukemia and provides scholarships for
learning-different youth interested in theater arts careers.
