prolificIcan’tkeepupwithallofitsbabies.Igavemymoma
wholebagofcucumberssayingpleasegettheseoutofhere.
Atleastthetomatoeswillbefrozenandused,butI’venevermade
pickles,sonotsurewhat’llhappentoallthosecakes.
Rightnowmyflowersaredoingprettywelltoo,andmynewgar‐
den’slookinglovely.LisaMasini,thecreatorandownerofWater‐
wiseGardenDesigntookthisphoto.
A Sad Realization
I’vebeenbuyingself‐helpbookssinceDr.WayneDyerwroteYourEr‐
roneousZonesinthe1970’sandeveryonewentmadoverit.
Overtheyearswhiletryingtobeatmyselfintosubmissionandfollow
goodhabitsandeschewbadones,Iwassuretherewassomemagic
mantraIneededtolearn.
IassumedonedayI’duncoverthewisdomthatwouldallowmeto
lookatthatpieceofchocolatecakewithbuttericingandjustsayno
thanks.
ButI’vefinallyrealized,it’sasUBChasbeentryingtotellmeallalong
withitsmotto:tuumest.Itisuptoyou.
Thereisnomagicotherthanyourbrainstatingtoyourselfyousim‐
plywillgotothegym,oryouwillnottouchthatthirdglassofwine.
Sad,though,asI’dhopedtheremightbeaneasierwaythanthat.
Dogmania
MylittlepuppyLouieisnow20weeksoldandlovestogofor
longdailywalks.Helovesbeatingupshoesandalmostanything
elsehecanfind.
I used to make this all the time for my pal Liz.

Thismonth’stestedrecipe:Scallopsinwhitewinesauce
4–6mediumtolargescallopsperperson
1onion,finelychopped
2–3clovesgarlic,finelyminced
6mediumsizedmushrooms,sliced
¼cupwhitewine
¼cupbutter
½cupwhippingcream
Sautetheonions,garlicandmushroomsforafewminutesinthe
butteruntilsoft.Turnuptheheatandaddthescallopsturning
everythinginthepantopreventburning.Addthewhitewineand
cookuntilreducedbyhalf,thenaddthewhippingcreamandcook
afewminutesuntilithasthickenedslightly.
He’sthefriendliestdogI’veever
ownedandwhenheseespeo‐
plehecrouchesdownandwags
likemad.Thenhestartspid‐
dlingabitasheracestowards
them.
Louie’sreallyenthusiastic
aboutthe9and10yearold
cats,MangoandWrecks.As
muchastheytrytostomach
him,theyfindhisbone‐jarring
pouncesannoying.
Margaretvisitedlastmonthandwascrestfallentoseehowmuch
thepuphadgrowninjustamonth.Shesaidhewasn’talittle
roundpuppyanymorebuthadbecomeadachshund.
Butnomatterhowmuchhegrowsup,he’llalwaysremainhis
mother’sprideandjoy.Isn’thejustsoadorable?
