Lesson Acts 10:34–43 Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ— he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Reader The Word of the Lord. Prelude Variations on O filii et filiae Introit O Sons and Daughters, Let Us Sing The congregation stands as the organ introduction to the Introit begins. Raymond H. Haan arr. H. Pysher Tom Council O sons and daughters, let us sing! The King of heaven, the glorious King, o’er death and hell rose triumphing. Alleluia! On this most holy day of days, our heart and voices, Lord, we raise to thee, in jubilee and praise. Alleluia! At the conclusion of the Introit, the Celebrant says Celebrant People Hymn 207 Christ being raised from the dead will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. Alleluia. Jesus Christ Is Risen Today —The 7:30 service continues on page 3 with the Easter Acclamation— –6– Easter Hymn Easter Acclamation Celebrant People The Word of God Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn of Praise Christ Our Passover Will C. MacFarlane Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over Him. For in that He died, He died unto sin once; but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia! Collect for Easter Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. On this day the Lord has act - ed; we will re - joice and be glad in it. antiphon is sung by a Cantor, then Congregation sings antiphon Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures forever. Let Israel now proclaim, “His mercy endures forever.” The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! The right hand is exalted! The right hand of the Lord has triumphed!” antiphon I shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord. The Lord has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death. Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord. “This is the gate of the Lord; he who is righteous may enter.” antiphon I will give thanks to you for you answered me and have become my salvation. The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. antiphon —The 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. services all continue here with the Epistle— Epistle 1 Corinthians 15:1–11 I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them—though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. –8– The Gospel Procession The congregation stands and joins in singing the hymn. †Sequence Hymn Thine Is the Glory Judas Maccabeus arr. Robert A. Hobby –9– Gospel Mark 16:1–8 Before the Gospel Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. After the Gospel Deacon People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. As the Gospel Procession Returns —At the 7:30 a.m. service— Organ Improvisation —At the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services— Easter Alleluia Homily Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! The Rector A brief period of silence follows the Homily. The congregation stands. Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is — seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. – 10 – H. Pysher For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People: Form VI In peace, we pray to you, Lord God. Silence For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone. For this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace. For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression. For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy. For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth. For Katharine, our Presiding Bishop; for Leo, our Bishop; for Peter, our Bishop CoadjutorElect; for the clergy of this parish ; and for all bishops and other ministers; For all who serve God in his Church. For the special needs and concerns of this congregation. Silence The People may add their own petitions Hear us, Lord; For your mercy is great. We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life, especially the wondrous gift of risen life in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Silence We will exalt you, O God our King; And praise your Name for ever and ever. – 11 – We pray for all who have died, especially those in whose memory the Easter flowers and decorations are given, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. Silence Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them; Who put their trust in you. The Celebrant says Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, “Peace I give to you; my own peace I leave with you:” Regard not our sins, but the faith of your Church, and give to us the peace and unity of that heavenly City, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, now and for ever. Amen. Easter is more than a Sunday. It is actually a seven-week season of the church year, the Great Fifty Days that begin at sundown the evening before Easter Day (when we celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter) and lasts for six more Sundays until the Day of Pentecost. These weeks of celebration will be dramatically different from the solemnity of Lent. Because Easter focuses on our new life in Christ, our liturgy reflects this joy. We stand for prayer throughout the service, and we omit the General Confession that normally follows the Prayers of the People. Of course, personal confession to God is always appropriate and may be made before our worship begins. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. PeopleAnd also with you. Greeting and Announcements The Rector The Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer D The Celebrant proceeds It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, Sanctus and Benedictus – 13 – Richard Proulx The congregation remains standing, and the Celebrant continues We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. Celebrant and People We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. – 14 – The Celebrant continues Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. And grant that we may find our inheritance with all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. AMEN. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Easter Fraction Anthem Victory arr. H. Pysher Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Behold who you are; become what you receive. – 15 – Communion All baptized Christians are invited to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist. This is the Lord’s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers to the stations at the Chancel steps, or, if unable to do so, request that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, go to the stations and simply cross your arms across your chest. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. Gluten-free wafers are available; let the priest know when you go up to receive. During the Communion —At the 7:30 a.m. service— Hymn 210 The Day of Resurrection (sung by all) —At the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services— Hymn 305 Anthem Come, Risen Lord (sung by all) Christ the Lord Is Risen Again Hymn 713 Anthem Christ Is Arisen Awake, Arise, Lift Up Your Voice Ellacombe Rosedale Philip W.J. Stopford Christ the Lord is risen again, Christ hath broken every chain. Hark, angelic voices cry, singing evermore on high, Alleluia! He who gave for us his life, who for us endured the strife, is our Paschal Lamb today; we too sing for joy, and say Alleluia! He who bore all pain and loss comfortless upon the cross, lives in glory now on high, pleads for us, and hears our cry. He who slumbered in the grave is exalted now to save; now through Christendom it rings that the Lamb is King of kings, Alleluia! Thou, our Paschal Lamb indeed, Christ, thy ransomed people feed; take our sins and guilt away; let us sing by night and day Alleluia! [Michael Weisse] Christ Is Arisen Richard Webster Awake, arise, lift up your voice, let Easter music swell; rejoice in Christ, again rejoice and on his praises dwell. O, with what gladness and surprise the saints their Savior greet; nor will they trust their ears and eyes but by his hands and feet. Those hands of liberal love indeed in infinite degree, those feet still free to move and bleed for millions and for me. His enemies had sealed the stone as Pilate gave them leave, lest dead and friendless and alone he should their skill deceive. O dead arise! O Friendless stand by seraphim adored! O Solitude again command your host from heaven restored! Awake, arise, lift up your voice, let Easter music swell; rejoice in Christ, again rejoice and on his praises dwell. Alleluia! [Christopher Smart] The congregation stands when the celebrant returns to the altar. Sending Out of Eucharistic Visitors Celebrant We who are many are one body. People For we all share one bread, and one cup. Postcommunion Prayer Celebrant and People Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. – 16 – The Easter Blessing May Almighty God, who has redeemed us and made us his children through the resurrection of his Son our Lord, bestow upon you the riches of his blessing. Amen. May God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin into newness of life, make you holy and worthy to be united with Christ for ever. Amen. May God, who has brought us out of bondage to sin into true and lasting freedom in the Redeemer, bring you to your eternal inheritance. Amen.
