The cooling temperatures and
changing leaves usher in a tranquil
time of year here in central
Appalachia. But those warm fall
colors are also an indication that flu
season is not far behind.
Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Facial plastic surgery is surgery performed to enhance visual appearance
of the facial structures and features. Common procedures include
facelifts, eye lifts, rhinoplasty, chin and cheek implants, liposuction, and
procedures to correct facial wrinkles.
The best way to protect yourself and
your loved ones against influenza this
season is through vaccination. If you
get the flu vaccine, you are 60% less
likely to need treatment for the flu by
a healthcare provider. Getting the
vaccine has been shown to offer other
substantial benefits including reducing
illness, antibiotic use, time lost from
work, hospitalizations, and deaths.
It takes approximately two weeks
after vaccination for antibodies to
develop in the body and provide
protection against the influenza virus.
In the meantime, you are still at risk
for getting the flu. That is why it is
better to get vaccinated early in the
fall, before the flu season really gets
under way.
We wish you and your family a happy
and healthy fall season.
Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed for patients with conditions
that may be present from birth, such as birthmarks on the face, cleft lip
and palate, protruding ears, and a crooked smile. Other conditions that
are the result of accidents, trauma, burns, or previous surgery are also
corrected with this type of surgery. In addition, some reconstructive
procedures are required to treat existing diseases like skin cancer.
The Ear
The treatment of ear disorders includes medical and surgical treatment
for hearing disorders, ear infections, balance disorders, facial nerve or
cranial nerve disorders, as well as management of congenital (birth) and
cancerous disorders of the outer and inner ear.
The Nose
Management of disorders of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses,
allergies, sense of smell, and nasal respiration (breathing), as well as the
external appearance of the nose are part of an ENT's area of expertise.
The Throat
Specific to the ENT specialty is expertise in managing diseases of the
larynx (voice box) and the upper aerodigestive tract or esophagus
including disorders of the voice respiration (breathing), and swallowing.

Meg Carpenter, MPT – New Director of the
Physical Therapy Department
Meg Carpenter, MPT, was recently promoted to Director of the Physical Therapy Department
after Karen Goad’s retirement.
A native of Princeton, Meg and her family have lived in the area for many years. Her
grandfather, Scott Lilly, was a well known local dentist.
Meg attended Princeton High School and earned a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from
West Virginia University – the first class to graduate in the new master’s program in PT.
When Meg was 12 years old, her father had open-heart surgery. Leading up to his
hospitalization at Duke University, he lost a great deal of weight and became very frail. With
cardiac rehab after surgery, he regained his strength and vitality. His progress so impressed Meg that she made the
decision at that young age to pursue some sort of therapy.
Meg has a long history with Princeton Community Hospital beginning in junior high and high school when she
volunteered in the Physical Therapy Department. As part of her studies at WVU, Meg completed two physical therapy
clinicals at PCH. She joined the department as a full-time therapist in 2006.
“The beauty of physical therapy is that we see so many success stories. We might see a patient
with tendonitis in her shoulder who can no longer dress herself, pick up her grandchild, or prepare
a meal. With each patient, you have successes and a great sense of satisfaction in helping them get
back to their normal function. That is the most rewarding aspect of my work – being able to help
people improve their quality of life.”
Meg Carpenter, MPT
The PCH Physical Therapy Department provides outpatient and inpatient acute care services. Acute care involves
therapists going directly to patient rooms to administer therapy. Examples include orthopaedic surgery patients, stroke
victims, and other surgical patients who must be mobile within a few hours after surgery. The therapists ensure that the
patient can use a walker or other assistive device so that when they go home, they go home safely. They also educate
family members who will be assisting the patient at home.
Outpatient services include therapy for orthopaedic patients, neurological patients (strokes, spinal cord injuries, etc.),
traumatic brain injuries, hand care, wound care, and pediatrics, to name a few.
On average, the department sees 50 outpatients per day and 30 inpatients twice per day.
For additional information, please call the Physical Therapy Department at (304) 487-7255.
