My whole career previous to joining Schlegel Villages has been in the hospitality field. I started my career with branded hotels with the Ramada chain and then migrated into more boutique style restaurants, Inns, Resorts and Spas. I wouldn’t say that the transition to senior’s care was easy but I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity and firmly believe that this is my calling. I am meant to be exactly where I am now. I am originally from London, Ontario and remember as a boy riding my bike past the very first Schlegel home on Egerton Street! My wife Ronda and I have two children, Sara and Courtney and we all live an easy commute away in Kitchener. We see the neighbours of Arbour Trails and the Village by the Arboretum as our extended family and we look forward to many celebrations and good times together. Promote cross-functional teams Create opportunities for meaningful and shared activities Connect research and innovation to Village life Offer flexible living Foster Authentic Relationships Honour diversity in Village life Promote resident empowerment Offer flexible dining Team Arbour Trails! Welcome to the amazing team of caring individuals who have joined the family of Arbour Trails. Their spirit, enthusiasm and genuine compassion resounded through Orientation Week and they are beyond excited to begin the journey that we will all take together as we build community and love life at the Village. Arbour Trails, Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 2 Every Person Has A Story... Programs For Active Living June and Aubrey Hagar prepare for life in their new home Coming Full Circle to the Village of Arbour Trails Guelph is home for June and Aubrey Hagar. June was born there when the city was just a small town and, as a married couple of 67 years, the Hagars have watched that town grow over the past six decades. Aubrey graduated from the University of Guelph and now, as they look forward to moving into their new home at the Village of Arbour Trails, he laughs to think how life has brought them full circle. “It’s a little strange,” he admits, but at 91, it’s safe to assume he knows where he wants to be. It’s fitting to be moving into a retirement community that sits upon university land, a stone’s throw from the green space of the Arboretum. “We just feel at home,” June says, as she discusses moving into the new village, which is the latest addition to the seniors’ community called the Village by the Arboretum (VBA), where the Hagars have many friends. They’ve been living in another retirement community in Guelph for some time now, but health concerns prompted them to look for a new home where skilled care will be available, if needed. Arbour Trails suits their needs perfectly. “It’s a good design and we liked the layout of the building,” Aubrey says. The concept of a village built around Main Street, complete with full-service amenities, such as a restaurant and spa, helped round out their decision. The Hagars like to keep busy and they enjoy meeting new people, so being welcomed into a new home and welcoming new neighbours as they arrive, is quite appealing. “We feel very blessed. We’ve had a wonderful life and we still have a wonderful quality of life,” says June. “We have friends and family and interests and we just can’t think of our quality of life being much better.” With children, grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, there are often plenty of visitors, and June says she looks forward to hosting them at their new home. The social aspects of life are clearly important to the Hagars and Arbour Trails holds many opportunities to meet new friends and reconnect with old ones. “It sounds just wonderful,” June says. Sept. 7, it seems, can’t come soon enough. ~ Kristian Partington Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Programs For Every Story Shares A Journey … Active Living Settling down after two lifetimes of adventure Arbour Trails and the VBA offer the Roses community, comfort and connectivity The 14 years that Marilyn and Hugh Rose have lived at the Village by the Arboretum (VBA) in Guelph is the longest they’ve ever lived in one place. As of Sept. 3, that 14-year stretch will come to an end, however, when they make the short move from their house to the newest Schlegel Village, Arbour Trails. Both Marilyn and Hugh are Torontonians by birth, but they spent most of their life working together in isolated parts of the world. They spent time in South Korea in the 1960s, several years in Yellowknife and Canada’s Arctic later on and they finished up their years of adventure in northwestern British Columbia. After retirement, they lived for some time along the shores of Georgian Bay before moving to the seniors’ community in the VBA. “It’s sort of interesting now, settling down finally,” Hugh says with a laugh. They chose Guelph and the VBA 14 years ago, he adds, because they were intrigued by the promise that residents of any of the Village’s nearly 500 single-family homes or 80 condo units would have the option of moving into a new retirement home that was to be built on site should their needs require it. Construction on this new addition was very slow to start, however, and it wasn’t until the developer of the VBA, Reid’s Heritage Homes, partnered with Schlegel Villages that the vision of a true continuum of retirement living began to take shape. Marilyn and Hugh have been watching Arbour Trails as it’s grown from the ground up since that partnership first brought shovels to the ground, and less than a week before their scheduled Sept. 3 move-in, their excitement is building. They’ve grown to love being part of the VBA community and are happy that many of the new residents of Arbour Trails will be people they’ve grown close to over the years. The same positive attitude that preceded every move they’ve made in the past is carrying them forward today, Hugh says, and it helps that they will remain part of a community they’ve grown so connected to. “Most of the people moving in are friends and neighbours,” Hugh says. “That’s one of the strong points.” Another strong point is the entire approach of the team at Schlegel Villages. Hugh has served as a volunteer board member in the past with a retirement community offering everything from independent living to long-term care, so he’s familiar with how things have changed over the years in terms of serving elders. Arbour Trails and Schlegel Villages hold a lot of promise, in terms of moving away from concepts of what elder care and seniors living used to be, he says, and it’s with great interest that he looks ahead to moving day. “I think, from what I read of Schlegels’ philosophy, that what they are trying to accomplish might be very worthwhile,” Hugh says. “We’re really looking forward to it.” ~ Kristian Partington Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 4 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS Welcome to the Village of Arbour Trails! After much anticipation and excitement, the village is now open to its very first residents. I am honoured to join the team at Arbour Trails and to count myself as one of your new neighbours. The next few months will be spent getting to know each other and getting involved to make this a living, breathing, village within a village within a village. Connie Davidson, Director of Retirement My background is in nursing and I have spent the past 7 years working with older adults in retirement and long-term care settings. My hope is that we can shed the perception of what it means to grow older by creating a vibrant, dynamic community focused on living and personal growth. I can help you to access the supports and services you need, so you can focus on what’s important. These services may include personal care assistance, oxygen therapy, audiology, medication assistance, foot care, personal companions and transportation for appointments. A bit about me: I live in Kitchener with my husband, Mark. I enjoy cooking and eating great food, reading and discussing life’s tough questions. I would love it if you would join me for an afternoon of board games or to watch a thought-provoking documentary. Welcome to Arbour Trails! My name is Tamara White and I warmly welcome you and your loved ones to the Arbour Trails family. Tamara White, Neighbourhood Coordinator Our hope is to make this a wonderful experience for each of you. I am the Neighbourhood Coordinator for the Rockwood and Everton neighbourhood areas. I am so pleased to be a part of this organization and make some special memories alongside each of you. If there are any questions from residents, families or team members, please feel free to see me. My door is always open for discussion. Cheers! Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 5 Programs For From TheActive Culinary Team Living I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all as you move into your new homes! I am honoured to be part of such a fantastic family as we embark on a new journey to create lasting memories and special relationships with all of our neighbours and friends. As the Director of Food Services & Hospitality, it is my hope that we can exceed all of your hospitality expectations and requirements. If you ever have any suggestions or comments that can assist our dietary team in attaining this goal, please do not hesitate to reach out. Our success as a team relies heavily on your input and overall satisfaction. A bit about me…having begun my adventures at an early age in the restaurant industry, I decided that this was where I wanted to be. I graduated from Food and Beverage Management at Conestoga College a few years later. After managing several quick service and full service restaurants, I made the decision to further my education at Brock University in Business Administration. My home away from my Arbour Trails home, also holds my extended support group. I couldn’t have done any of this and gotten where I am today without the love and support of my husband Rob and “My Three Sons”, Jakob (9), Joshua (7) and Jordan (4). In everything that I do, they are always with me. The boys are excited to meet all of you as well, in your new home! Michelle Bolton, Director of Food Services and Hospitality Greetings residents of Arbour Trails! I’m Kyle Adam and I’m the Executive Chef here at Arbour Trails. My mission is to create the best possible food and dining experience for you as I possibly can by working with the great talent we’ve assembled in the kitchen and dining room! A little history about me; I was born in Windsor, Ontario and moved around the province until I found myself in Kitchener where my first jobs in kitchens came about. I worked in several corporate kitchens, gaining knowledge and skill until I decided that George Brown College was a place that I wanted to go. At George Brown College I furthered my skills in the culinary field, dabbling in aspects of service and viniculture. Kyle Adam, Executive Chef Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Once completed, I pursued and obtained my Red Seal. I went through a couple of jobs until I found myself in an interview with Scott Evans and finally found a career and family. I live in Guelph with my wife Jen and new daughter Abby, and am looking forward to a long life here at Arbour Trails! Page 6 Programs For Active Living My name is Mike Lowden and I am here from The Village of Aspen Lake in Windsor supporting Arbour Trails as Director of Environmental Services. I have lived in Windsor all my life; my wife Elaine and I have 3 children and I have had the pleasure of working at Aspen Lake for the last 1.5 years. I come from an automotive and construction background as a stationary engineer and my hobbies are woodworking and camping. I appreciate the help from the excellent support staff and supporting network and I am looking forward to the opportunity to learn and grow within Schlegel Villages, the team and from each of you. Mike Lowden, Director of Environmental Services Wife of 19 years to my husband Jack • Mom of two beautiful, amazing girls — Alayna (9) and Lauren (7) • Lover of laughter • Creative spirit • Crazy for Coffee • Volunteer • This is just a small piece of who I am! The journey to joining the Arbour Trails team has meandered many years through senior living in Retirement, Long Term Care and in not for profit senior home support services in the community. I am thrilled that along my path I encountered Schlegel Villages and was fortunate to have had the opportunity to welcome and engage volunteers at The Village of Riverside Glen and I am excited to support residents and village life here at Arbour Trails through recreation, leisure, volunteer and community engagement. We have a unique and treasured opportunity to create the village culture and environment that all of us wish to live and work in. This is an honour and I look forward to collaborating with everyone as we take this journey together. Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Kim Cusimano, Director of Recreation Page 7 Program For Active Living Programs For Active Living I am so excited to begin this new opportunity with the Schlegel team at the Village of Arbour Trails! Previous to Schlegel Villages, I worked as a Kinesiologist at multiple long term care and retirement facilities across Southwestern Ontario. My passion for senior wellness comes from the involvement I have in helping individuals progress with their own health and fitness, regardless of skill set, previous health or current condition. My favourite part about senior care is getting to know my residents and learn their stories. Originally, I’m from a small area of Grey-Bruce County, about 2 hours northwest of Toronto. I have now lived in the Kitchener/Waterloo area for the last 7 years, where I currently reside with my amazing husband Rob, beautiful daughter Hailey and our 2 crazy dogs-our Beagle Burton and our Bull Mastiff Miss Kay. Maggie Schram, Kinesiologist PAL? The acronym PAL stands for Programs for Active Living My vision for our PAL program at Arbour Trails is not just physical exercises, such as a group exercise class-but also to create meaningful, social, engaged and fun programs for all participants; regardless of skill level, physical ability or knowledge of a particular program. I would like us all to try some new activities and revisit some more familiar ones. This month I will be offering a 10am Fitness program as well as 1:30 PAL program daily. Let’s work together to find out each other’s interests and explore some new or different forms of exercise and activities. Please let me know if you have any specific ideas or areas of interest you would like to share and we can begin shaping our PAL programs to offer as much variety and fun as possible! I can’t wait to meet and work with you all! Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 8 Programs For The Administration SupportActive Team! Living "I am not afraid of what my future holds, I am embracing it." —Aria Tweedy I keep lots of quotes like these around with me at all times; you’ll find quotes on post its in my purse, in my wallet, in my journal, on my mirror, basically any flat surface is fair game for a post it with a inspirational quote on it. As I read this quote I thought of you; many of you are leaving homes that you have lived in for years and shared many memories and are unsure of your future here at The Village of Arbour Trails. I can’t help but compare the move-in process to the first time I moved out and moved into residence at Carleton University in Ottawa. It’s a fresh new start which can feel scary and exciting all at the same time! My job as the Move-In Coordinator is to make your move into your beautiful, new home a smooth and positive experience where some new memories can be made and the next chapter of your life can begin! Janelle Mitchener, Move - In Coordinator My name is Ainsley Snowe, and I am very happy to officially be a “Schlegelite”! I recently graduated from University of Guelph, where I earned my degree in Bachelor of Applied Science, focusing on Adult Development, Families and Well-Being. Since graduating, I have worked in retirement and long-term care homes, and have enjoyed sharing smiles and laughs with the residents. I love spending time with my grandmothers, who inspired me to pursue a career advocating for older adults. I look forward to getting to know all of the wonderful staff, residents and families of the Village of Arbour Trails! Ainsley Snowe, Administrative Assistant I live here in the city of Guelph with my husband Mike. I enjoy spending time with my family as well as biking, hiking, reading, gardening and volunteering in the community. Before joining the team at Arbour Trails, I held an administration role for a number of years at Homewood Health Centre in Guelph, RBJ Schlegel in Kitchener and now as Administrative Coordinator here at the Village. I will be your connection regarding all administrative processes and can be found at the Village Offices located just a walk a way from Town Square. Arbour Trails Volume 1, Issue 1 Donna Hastings, Administrative Coordinator Page 9 Programs For Active Living Hello, my name is Philip Aubin, and it is with great pleasure that I have this glorious opportunity to represent Arbour Trails as a Marketing Coordinator. My journey working with seniors goes back 16 years ago, while volunteering at a Retirement Home in Orillia, Ont. My admiration for our senior population began and lead me into the Food and Beverage department at this community where I worked for 5 years. While working at the community, a wonderful opportunity came in the Activation Department, which I continued my schooling in, enrolling in a Activation in Gerontology Program. I had the pleasure of working as an Activity Coordinator for two communities for over 5 years. I then had the opportunity to join a Retirement Company in Toronto, and work in the Marketing Department which I did for 6 years. It was then that I truly gained an appreciation for our seniors, their sacrifices, hard work, and enthusiasm, that has created a road paved with extraordinary opportunities for many of us. I look forward to not only sharing my experiences, but sharing this wonderful community of Arbour Trails with you all. Philip Aubin, Marketing Coordinator It is a great privilege to be working at the Village of Arbour Trails and alongside a team who stand by the Schlegel vision and dedication to senior’s care. The best part of my job is the opportunity to hear our residents stories—sitting down with family and understanding the person behind the care and the issues, is truly inspiring. I live by the philosophy that the door is always open, so I encourage you to stop by the Welcome Centre to say hello and share your experiences. I would like to welcome each and every one of you, your family and friends to our village and in the words of Scott Evans, our General Manager— Welcome to the Village of Arbour fun! We offer a wide range of esthetics, massage and hair services. Manicure, Pedicures, Facials, Hot Stone Massage, Relaxation and Registered Massage and a wide range of hair services. During school I was hired at Gina’s Spa in Waterloo and after graduation became the Head Esthetician. Working for almost 4 years at Gina’s taught me the importance of customer service, high level esthetics and respect for where the industry began. Wanting to expand my knowledge and get into the hospitality industry I worked at Langdon Hall in Cambridge for 2 years and then had the great opportunity to be the Spa Director at The Millcroft Inn & Spa (Vintage Hotels) for over 5 years. The Millcroft spa was 17,000 sq ft with indoor and outdoor pools, spa café, and much more. Wanting to start my own family and be close to home I sadly said good bye to The Millcroft Inn & Spa. Now in 2013 a new adventure begins. My dream comes true as I open The Riverstone Spa and Salon. My hope is to make Riverstone a special place for each and every one to enjoy. Whether it is to escape from the busy days, a gift given from that special someone or a well-deserved treat to yourself I promise that each visit you will leave feeling renewed and pampered.
