“The women are so happy to move into

Adult Services. She added, “They are

We look forward to opening our next

this Spring. The new CILA will be
home to four gentlemen. We look forward to becoming part of a new community.
From our Executive Director,
Tony Di Vittorio
Dear Friends of Blue Cap,
It seems that we have survived what many have called a “great and
challenging winter” of snow and cold. Still, for most people, this
“great challenge” was more of an inconvenience. Homes may have
been a little chillier and commutes a little more stressful but mostly
this was not a true challenge.
At Blue Cap, we also survived the inconvenient winter but still face
great challenges. There is the challenge of the state and its underfunded system of support for people with disabilities, which teeter
on the edge of collapse. There is the challenge of the economy that
stresses the friends and families of Blue Cap who we depend on for
support.
Most importantly, there is the challenge of not accepting the current
state of things with a victim’s mentality of resigned acceptance but
rather continue to dream of what can be and work to that vision.
This is why even during the “great and challenging winter” at Blue
Cap we are thinking SPRING! Join us as we dream and work together.
Thanks for Supporting Our Journey,
Tony

a special occasion,
or pay tribute to and memorialize a loved
one while celebrating their life and
accomplishments.
Orders can be placed at any time of the
year and they will be engraved and set as
time and weather permits. To order a

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Donate Gifts for the Children at Blue Cap
For the past seven years, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has made a monetary donation to be used to purchase holiday presents for the children in the School Program and the Sunshine Kids Child Care. The donation is coordinated by Patti
Kuehner, High School Teacher, in Blue Cap’s School Program.
“Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is pleased to support Blue Cap again this year. Thrivent is committed
to building stronger communities and is impressed by
the services and opportunities that Blue Cap offers to
both children and adults. We are grateful for the
chance to work together in the past and for years to
come.” said Mark Kuehner, South Cook County
Chapter President.

Time With Family - Time With Friends
One of the most difficult decisions the family of an individual with
disabilities faces is when it comes time to consider residential placement.
It can be a time of extreme anxiety as they see their loved one leave the
security of home and transition to a residential home. At Blue Cap we
understand the importance of this time of transition and that continuing
to maintain relationships with family is one of the most vital parts of the
process.
Recently Beth, who has been at Blue Cap for
over 30 years in the Adult Day Services
Program, lost her mother. With dad unable
to care for her, Beth moved into one of Blue
Cap’s Community Integrated Living
Arrangement (CILA) homes in the
Residential Program. Although Beth has
settled in nicely in her new home, she
continues to enjoy spending every weekend
with her brother, who is now her guardian,
and the rest of her family. She is equally
enjoying her own independence and time
spent with family.
Beth shows off her beautiful smile.
In her new home, Beth delights in spending time listening to music in her
own room, which is decorated just the way she likes it, and watching
Wheel of Fortune with her friends in their shared living room. She also
enjoys shopping, parties, movies and going out to dinner with her
housemates.

Illinois Sparks Host an Evening of Baseball
On December 13, the Illinois Sparks once again invited the individuals from Blue Cap to the Bo Jackson Dome
for an evening of learning the fundamentals of baseball. Each of the 25 individuals who attended the event received individualized instruction from the Illinois Sparks team members. They have effectively adapted their instruction to accommodate all abilities.
The individuals who participated received instruction in the fundamentals of batting and hitting from Sparks team members. They
also had the option of running an obstacle course set up for the evening’s event. Each of the participants received a t-shirt, medal and a
Target gift card. The Sparks even treated everyone to a delicious
buffet. “Everyone enjoyed learning the skills and fundamentals of
the game of baseball, but running the bases and receiving applause
were definitely their favorite part of the event.” said Tionna
Mitchell, DSP, who along with four other staff, escorted the individuals to the game.
Howard (l), Peter (c), and Gerald (r) look handsome in the
t-shirts they received at the Sparks event.
We are grateful to the Sparks for providing adaptive sports opportunities for people with disabilities and including Blue Cap in their annual events.

Blue Cap’s 19th Annual Phonathon Fundraiser—March 24, 25 & 26
“Look to the Future”
Help us reach our goal of $30,000
The 19th Annual Blue Cap Phonathon will take place on Monday, March 24; Tuesday, March 25; and,
Wednesday, March 26 at Modern Drop Forge, 13810 South Western in Blue Island. Each year Modern Drop
graciously offers the use of the facility for Blue Cap’s Phonathon. Over the course of three evenings we will
contact over 2,000 of Blue Cap’s generous donors.
At least 30 volunteers are needed each evening from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to
work in teams covering the phones, recording pledges, filling out pledge
forms, stuffing envelopes, preparing the filled pledge forms for mailing
and assisting in volunteer motivation.
The volunteers will be divided into two zones with each zone consisting
of five callers, five recorders and a runner. Zones will be competing
against each other to bring in the most pledges. Every volunteer will be
competing to win prizes throughout the evening. There will also be a
clerical area for those who do not wish to make phone calls. At the end
of each evening, all volunteers will be entered into a drawing for raffle
prizes.
If you would like to volunteer, make a donation, or donate an item to be used as a prize for our volunteers for
Blue Cap’s 19th Annual Phonathon, please contact Jill Hart in Blue Cap’s Development Office at 708.389.8137
Ext. 108 or by email to [email protected].
Why Do We Fundraise?
At Blue Cap we have various fundraising events throughout the year for a variety of purposes. For instance, all money raised at our annual Charity Invitational golf outing goes directly to the Blue Cap Foundation to secure the future of Blue Cap’s critical programs and services. Our Family & Friends Association
events go strictly for outings, dances, field trips and many more fun activities for the individuals at Blue
Cap. The Phonathon and Auction fundraisers help us bridge the gap between state funding and day-to-day
operations as all money raised is put to immediate use. Please take a moment to look over the events calendar for the upcoming year and consider supporting Blue Cap at one or more of our upcoming fundraising
events:
