The show is March 4, 2016 and all entries are
due by 4:30 p.m. on January 8, 2016.
Please note that the Extension office merely
takes the entries for the show - it is not our show
and we can't answer your questions about it!
The show entry says it needs your age as of
September 1, 2013 – please be aware that it
should read September 1, 2015.
4-H Scholarship UPDATE - IMPORTANT!
If you are turning in a 4-H Foundation/
Opportunities Scholarship from Comal County
4-H, you must bring it to the office and turn it in
directly to Megan Logan, District 4-H Specialist,
on January 25, 2016. Megan will be in the
meeting room at the Extension office on
Monday, January 25, 2016 from 10 am to 5:30
pm.
You must turn your scholarship in directly to
Megan. Not turning it in at that time will result in
your scholarship NOT being accepted. Your
application must be complete when turned in.
Please be aware that a date of February 1,
2016 was previously published. The new
deadline is January 25, 2016!

2016 Beekeeping Essay Contest - Due Jan 8
The 2016 Beekeeping Essay Contest theme
has been announced. This year’s topic is
“Bees and Pollination. How Important is it?”
The deadline for submission to the Texas 4-H
office is Friday, January 8, 2016.
Submissions will only be accepted
electronically. The essay, along with the
certification form, should be uploaded to
FormSite at

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top
three winners from Texas 4-H:
1st Place: $300.00
2nd Place: $200.00
3rd Place: $100.00
The first place essay will advance to the
national contest representing Texas 4-H.

4-H Opportunities Scholarships (See 1st page!)
The Texas 4-H and Youth Development
Program and the Texas 4-H Youth
Development Foundation is once again
pleased to offer to our senior high school 4-H
members and current college students the
opportunity to apply for an Opportunity
Scholarship through the Texas 4-H Youth
Development Foundation.
This year Texas 4-H members can apply for
scholarships in three areas, baccalaureate,
courageous heart, and technical. Former Texas
4-H members will be able to apply for
scholarships through the collegiate scholarship
program. All applications and support
materials are attached to this email.
Additionally, all information can
be downloaded from the Texas 4-H website at:
texas4-h.tamu.edu The application and the
instructions are separate documents for easier
completion and direction. The application
form is being offered in Microsoft Word edition.
Due to a continued increase in incomplete
and the incorrect completion of the
scholarship applications from applicants, any
incomplete or incorrect application submitted
will not be considered. It is the responsibility of
the 4-H member and parent/guardian to
ensure all information is correct and complete
prior to submitting. Absolutely no follow up or
updates will be allowed once submitted.

requirements should not be submitted to the

CCJLSA Scholarship - Due March 15th
The Comal County Junior Livestock Show
Association Scholarship is due to the Extension
office by March 15, 2016. The application is
posted on our web site under the Publications
& Information tab. Click here for the
application. Be sure to turn in your
documentation with your scholarship
application.
CCJLSA Scholarship Rules & Guidelines
Applicant's family are members of the CCJLSA
by Dec. 1 each year the student exhibited.
Applicants are members in good standing in
the FFA or 4-H at the time of application.
Applicant's participated as exhibitors in the
show for at least 2 years during high school.
Applicant must have participated in operation
of the Concession stand, or another part of the
Show & Sale process, during the Stock Show
and Sale each year they exhibited in the show
during their high school years. Students should
collect documentation for the activities in
which they participated. The following
information is required: (1) Student Name and
Club Affiliation, (2) Signature of Adult in charge
of concession stand, or any activity in which
the student actively participated to assist the
CCJLSA.
Currently, each of the four high schools and
the 4-H program will be provided three (3)
$1,000.00 scholarships to award to students.
The CCJLSA has the final determination of how
many scholarships will be offered each year
and how much each scholarship will be worth.
These decisions will be made by the
association based on available funds raised by
the concession stand. All three scholarships
must be awarded or they will be lost. No 'roll
over' policy will be offered.
The CCJLSA President will appoint a committee
to review and select scholarship winners.
Scholarship recipients will be selected from
applications received from FFA Booster Clubs
and the 4-H Extension office. Winners’ names
will be given to the organizations for
recognition at their Awards programs. The
recipients are then required to turn in a copy
of their tuition payment for the fall or spring
semester from the school they are attending
and a thank-you note to the association in
order to receive payment. Please send proof
of tuition payment and thank-you note to:
CCJLSA, P.O. Box 311976, New Braunfels, TX
78131-1976. Expiration of this scholarship award
is April 1st of the following year the award is
originally made.
If the student applicant is applying through
FFA, the student must fill out a general
scholarship application (available in the
Counselor’s office or Career Center), provide a
copy of their transcript, a personal statement
of their future plans to utilize the scholarship
money, and they should meet the rules and
guidelines provided by the CCJLSA as
mentioned above.
If the student is applying through 4-H, the
student should contact the Extension Service
office for other application requirements and
further details. They are also required to meet
the rules and guidelines pro-vided by the
CCJLSA as mentioned above.
These guidelines pertaining to the CCJLSA
Scholarship Program may be changed or
amended by the Association Membership as
needed to improve the scholarship awards
program process.

State Fair of Texas Scholarship Applications
Scholarship Applications Now Online
Applications for the 2016 State Fair of Texas
Livestock scholarships are now online!
Scholarships are awarded to graduating Texas
high school seniors who are enrolling in an
agricultural-related or agricultural-benefiting
natural science curriculum at a Texas college
or university and who have competed in
competitive youth livestock events held at the
State Fair of Texas. Apply online today,
applications are due February 15, 2016.
World Food Prize Competition - Due Jan 5, 2016
Inspiring the Next Generation of Global
Leaders is the goal of the World Food Prize
competition being held at the 2016 Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo. The contest is
open to 4-H members who prepare a research
paper about a global issue concerning hunger
and poverty. Students then participate in a
daylong event during the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo presenting their research as
well as visiting with other leaders in the global
food community.
OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPATING
STUDENTS – THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE GLOBAL
YOUTH INSTITUTE - Four to six students at the
World Food Prize Texas Youth Institute will be
invited to attend the three-day educational
experience held in conjunction with the World
Food Prize International Symposium in October.
Students interact with World Food Prize
Laureates, discuss pressing food security issues
with international experts, and participate in
interactive activities with other students from
across the United States and around the world.
BORLAUG-RUAN INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP
Students who attend the Global Youth Institute
may apply for this all-expenses-paid, eightweek hands-on summer experience, working
with world-renowned scientists and
policymakers at leading research centers in
Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle
East.
USDA WALLACE-CARVER FELLOWSHIP
Students involved in the World Food Prize youth
programs may apply for a USDA WallaceCarver fellowship. Fellows conduct original
research or policy analysis through paid
summer internships at USDA research centers
and field offices across the country, including
USDA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Recordbook Updates! IMPORTANT!
CHANGES FOR 2015-2016
Record Books submitted for judging in 2016 are
to be completed using the Microsoft Word
forms found at texas4-h.tamu.edu
Member categories
Junior (grades 3-5)
Intermediate (grades 6-8)
Senior (grades 9-12)
Clarification on reporting of learning
experiences. Activities that occur in non-4-H
settings such as other community or youth
organizations, or in a self-directed project may
be reported in the Junior Diary, Intermediate
Personal Journal or Senior Section I as learning
experiences.
All competitive events outside of 4-H are to be
reported as non-4-H.
4-H members winning first place in a record
book category may enter that same category
again.

Youth Activities at San Antonio Stock Show February 13 and 20, 2016
4-H, FFA and FCCLA members from across
South Central Texas gather together at the San
Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo to showcase
their talents, organization activities and project
work. Members set up exhibits and hands-on
activity booths for visitors and guests attending
the Stock Show & Rodeo. Additional activities
throughout the day include the Photography
Contest display and the Wagon &
Wheelbarrow Parade.
Photography Contest Display & Awards
Ceremony - February 13, 2016
The Photography Contest is open to all
children ages 8-18. There are three age groups
and 14 categories. There is no entry fee. Each
contestant may enter up to two photos per
category only. All entries are displayed in the
School Tours Committee tent for Youth Day.
The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand
Champion & Best of Show winners display is
moved to the front of the Joe & Harry Freeman
Coliseum and will remain on display until the
last day of the stock show and rodeo. There is
a Photography Award Ceremony held during
Youth Day. If you have any questions, please

Country Couture Fashion Show - February 20
This year's show promises to be the BEST
EVER! The purpose of this Fashion Show is to
give our youth an opportunity to show their
talents and abilities. This is not a judged
competition; it is simply a time when young
people can show off a garment that they
have made. The garment(s) can be created
from a purchased pattern, an original design
or a redesign of a garment.
We would also like to highlight student
design sketches or design boards. They will be
displayed prior to and during the Fashion Show
itself. You do not have to have a garment in
the Fashion Show in order to have your work
displayed. Any student is welcome to
participate in this capacity. For questions,

2015-2016 State 4-H Photography Rules
For 2015-2016 the theme is “4-H, Ribbons,
Awards and Recognition”. This year the theme
will focus on still life arrangements of 4-H
awards, ribbons and recognition. The
arrangement and positioning of items will be
strongly evaluated as well as the quality of the
photo. Photo should create emotion and
have impact!
Changes to rules for 2016. A statement related
to the fact that all photos must be the original
work of the 4-H member submitting the
photograph. No photograph can be
submitted which has been taken by other 4-H
members, a family member, or any
printed/digital source. All photos will be
scanned through a reverse image search.
This contest is for SENIOR AGED 4-H'ers ONLY
(Grades 9-10-11-12). You must submit your
photos to the Comal County Extension Office
by March 15, 2016 for county judging. Only
those selected by the judge will be allowed to
Livestock Skill-a-thon - NEW CONTEST!
We are excited to announce the rules and
resource information for the Texas 4-H Livestock
Skill-a-thon contest. This is a NEW contest for
the 2016 Texas 4-H Roundup. This year we are
offering the contest as an Invitational Contest
open to both Intermediate and Senior age 4-H
members. The first place senior level team
qualifies to advance to the 2016 National 4-H
Livestock Skill-a-thon contest at the North
American International Livestock Exposition
(NAILE) in Louisville, KY

OBJECTIVE
The Livestock Skill-a-thon contest tests a 4-H
member’s knowledge and comprehension of
animal science and livestock management
practices. The contest provides an opportunity
for youth to gain and develop production
livestock skills and life skills through a
competitive environment.

CLUB NEWS
Sherwood's December Meeting
Ugly Christmas Sweater/Hat Contest
Sherwood 4-H met on December 14th for a
Christmas party. There were 54 people present (33
members, 16 adults and 5 guests). We had a white
elephant gift exchange, food, an ugly Christmas sweater
contest and lots of fun!
For Community Service, we had a toy drive with
toys to be donated to the Children's Hospital of San
Antonio.
Our next meeting is January 11th at 7 p.m. at the
Bulverde/Spring Branch EMS.

Bulverde 4-H Club - December meeting
The Bulverde 4-H Club held its monthly meeting on
Monday, December 14, 2015. There were 8 members
and 5 adults present.
After a short meeting, Amanda and Lucas Bryand
gave us a presentation on 4-H swine projects. We then
enjoyed our Christmas bunco party with prizes and
snacks.
Our next meeting will be held Monday, January 11,
2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rahe Bulverde Elementary
School Cafeteria.

Homegrown Food & Nutrition Project Meeting
This picture is the Homegrown Club’s Food & Nutrition
project meeting where they made baked Christmas
goodies for the Crisis Center of NB.

Homegrown Food & Nutrition Project Volunteers at The
Kitchen Table - The Homegrown Food & Nutrition
project volunteered to help at the New Braunfels food
pantry, the Kitchen Table, which helps feed needy
families in our community.
Gruene Kountry @ Colonial Manor
On Monday, December 14 the Gruene Kountry 4-H Club
delivered poinsettias and gift-filled stockings to our
adopted residents of Colonial Manor. We also went
caroling and enjoyed wishing all of the residents a
"Merry Christmas!"
Close to Home - December meeting
The Close to Home 4-H meeting was a Christmas party
this month. We wrapped gifts to give to a local family in
need this holiday season. We decorated cookies and
had a jolly time. Look forward to seeing everyone in the
new year!
Gruene Kountry December Meeting
Gruene Kountry 4-H Club held their December
meeting/Christmas party on Sunday, December 6th at
the Comal County Extension Meeting Room. There were
64 people in attendance: 34 members, 26 adults and 4
siblings.
During our general meeting Mrs. Kreusler presented
officer pins to last year's club officers and year pins to
members who completed a recordbook. After the
meeting, we made homemade Christmas ornaments,
stuffed 20 stockings to deliver to our adopted Colonial
Manor residents (all the members donated various
items for the stockings), and played Christmas
Pictionary. For refreshments, we had pizza that we
earned for raising the most money at the 4-H Silent
Auction. We also participated in a cookie exchange and
everyone shared 3 dozen yummy cookies.
We will go caroling at 6 pm on December 14th at
Colonial Manor and our next meeting will be on Sunday,
January 10th at the Extension office. Our guest speaker
will be Dr. Barron Rector, Associate Professor and
Extension Range Specialist at Texas A&M University.

Gruene Machine places 1st!
Gruene Machine, the Gruene Kountry intermediate
food challenge team from Comal County, placed first at
the District 10 Food Challenge competition. The team
members were Keene Kreusler, Carlie Stratemann,
Carolyn Stratemann, and Jillian Volbrecht.

One Day 4-H Results
4-H Council met to trim the courthouse Christmas tree
on December 2nd. Cookies were presented to the
County Commissioners.

After the tree was decorated we went back to the
Extension meeting room for our party. We also stuffed
Christmas bags for children at the Crisis Center in New
Braunfels.

Everyone who has entered the courthouse today, for
Commissioners Court, FEMA, Department Heads or just
guests, are overwhelmed by the picture perfect
Christmas tree this year. The 4-H Council and especially
those hard working kids did a fantastic job. It will
brighten our everyday for the Holiday season. Thank
you for all your planning and organization as it is
something to be proud of and described as a “Norman
Rockwell” tree.

District Food Show
Nahalie Stidhem placed 4th out of 12 at the District
Food Show. She made an eggplant and blue cheese
sandwich. Congratulations, Halie!
District Food Challenge
The Controlled Chaos team consisting of Zoe Lovelady,
Hannah Kolb and Katie Smith placed 2nd in the
Nutritious Snack category at the District 4-H Food
Challenge Contest in Kerrville this past weekend.

Grace Buschfort and Shelby Steinbach recently attended
National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C.
Helena MacCrossan at National 4-H Congress
Helena MacCrossan, 15, a member of Bluebonnet 4-H
Club and Comal County 4-H Council is in Atlanta
attending the National 4-H Congress. On Monday, she
participated in a service-learning project helping Fred A.
Toomer Elementary School second-grade gifted and
talented students film a stop motion video. Helena is
one of 40 Texas delegates who have been in Atlanta
since Thursday meeting with more than 900 4-Hers
from across the United States, attending workshops to
learn ideas about making 4-H an even better
experience. At the school, she met former Georgia 4-H
member and 2016 Miss America Betty Cantrell, and her
Congress experience also has included a tour Monday
afternoon of the CNN Headline News studios, various
cultural events and a gala dinner celebrating 4-H
delegates and charging them to Excite, Spark and Ignite
their own lives, their community, and their world.

projects that can complement any other
4-H project. You can buy clothes you
intend to wear in the show ring, to ride
horses, to wear as a vet tech…or you can
sew up almost anything!
