FROM THE PRINCIPAL
BOB ROWE
T
his fall, we welcomed 151 freshmen to our campus, a 14% increase in freshman
students over last year! I have been asked why our enrollment is increasing
while many other private schools’ enrollments are declining. My answer is that
Covington Catholic has earned a reputation for educational excellence while remaining
strong in our Catholic identity. For example, the average ACT score of our 2012 seniors
was 25.3 – an average significantly higher than the Kentucky state average of 19.8 and
the national average of 21.1. The numbers speak for themselves. So why is enrollment
increasing? It is because parents believe the investment in a Covington Catholic
education is worth it.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our new faculty members.
Our new chaplain is Fr. Ian McDole who teaches Latin I and Church History. He has
studied in Rome at The Gregorian University. We have added two new English teachers,
Mrs. Christina Baulch and Mrs. Dawn Stanchek; math teacher, Ms. Susan Lippert; and
technology coordinator, Mr. Brian Meyer. They round out a very solid faculty whose
credentials are impeccable. On staff, we have graduates from the University of Notre
Dame, Vanderbilt, and Purdue, in addition to those from our many reputable regional
and strong state schools. This faculty will challenge students to reach their fullest
potential.
Within the next few pages, we acknowledge those who have supported our school
financially. You have, in great part, enabled CCH to provide what I consider the best
high school educational opportunity in the area, and I thank you.
In the pool of high schools, there are giant public schools and smaller
private ones, and then there is Covington Catholic. It is large enough to
offer first class facilities and a multitude of avenues of discovery, but small
enough that our students get the personal attention they require to thrive.
We consider this a perfect balance, and our committed donors have helped make this
possible. Explore and enjoy this copy of the Journal, and be proud of the school we have
worked together to make an exceptional place of spiritual, academic, physical,
and social growth.

ON A MISSION IN NICARAGUA
During that week, the group laid over
1100 feet of water line in 100 degree
heat. “It was difficult,” said junior
Justin Ryan. “Without the water line,
women have to walk over seven miles a
couple times a day to get water.”
On the last day, the group had some
fun time. Senior Kevin Boerger posted,
“We celebrated Mass on the beach. It
was pretty cool. As a whole, this week
was a life-changing experience. It was
one of the best weeks of my life.”
During their week in Nicaragua, CovCath students dug 1100 feet of ditches for water lines.
O
n Sunday, June 17, 2012,
thirty-seven members of
the Covington Catholic
community headed to Nicaragua for a
week-long mission trip to dig ditches
and pour concrete. They worked on
the Modern Bathroom Project with a
non-profit agency there called Amigos
for Christ.
Christian Greenwell, a senior at
Covington Catholic, posted on the
group’s blog after the first day. He
shared that after arriving in El Chonco,
the CovCath group first had the
opportunity to get to know the residents
by spending time with children at
school and being graciously invited

into homes. Christian was struck by
the people’s lack of the most basic
of resources such as
clean, safe water. That
afternoon, the group
began their task of
constructing a modern
bathroom. “We had
to dig a septic ditch
then pour the concrete
for the lid of the tank.
I was so humbled by
the people that when
we began the work,
it became a challenge
for me to do the best I
could for them.”
Faculty members Rich Andolina, Nick
Hovan ‘91, and Julie Stengle led the
mission group. They were accompanied
by thirty students; fathers David Drees
‘78, Joseph Ryan, and Doug Lyons;
and one relative. More information
about the mission trip, as well as
pictures and videos, are posted on their
blog, cchnicatrip2012.blogspot.com.

The CCH community is invited to join students, faculty, and staff in prayer
in the CCH Chapel.

Bishop Foys celebrates the Eucharist with students at the opening school year Mass.

t the opening school year
Mass on Friday, August 24,
Principal Bob Rowe
announced the establishment of the
Bishop Roger J. Foys Scholarship
Fund. In July, Bishop Foys
celebrated the 10th anniversary
of his installation as Bishop of the
Diocese of Covington. The creation
of the scholarship was in honor of
this special occasion, as well as his
longtime commitment to Catholic
education.
To further commemorate the
occasion of the Bishop’s anniversary,
members of the Student Senate
presented him with a granite marker
that was later installed near the
Grotto of the Blessed Mother on
campus.
Bishop Foys, clearly emotional
at the announcement, expressed
his gratitude to those present.
He also acknowledged the strong
commitment to Catholic education
in Northern Kentucky and reminded

at Mass.
ince 2005, over 200 students
between their sophomore
and junior years have had
the opportunity to attend a weeklong retreat experience in the
state of Wyoming. For those who
need financial assistance to go, an
anonymous alumni donor has been
there to help. What follows is a note
sent by one of the students to thank
the donor for the opportunity. There
is no better way to explain the impact
of Wyoming than through the words
in this note.
Dear Sir,
I cannot possibly thank you enough
for contributing to one of the most
memorable and life-changing experiences
of my life. Without your help, it would
not have been possible for me to attend
such a wonderful retreat.
When I had first heard of the Wyoming
Retreat, I thought I had no chance of
being able to go due to financial issues,
but then an upperclassman informed
me that there was an anonymous donor
who helped make it possible for anyone
to have this amazing experience. If only
you had been able to see the joy and
enthusiasm not only on my face, but on
the faces of everyone who attended, you
would understand.
I see now what benefits the retreat had
and the impact it had on my faith. I
found out that discovering God is like
climbing a mountain. We all have
our struggles, but when we overcome
them, we feel more than just simple
satisfaction, we are overjoyed. All of
this was made possible by you, and I
am so grateful. I hope that this retreat
continues for years to come so that I may
be able to do the same thing for others
that you have done for so many students
here at Covington Catholic.

NEW FACULTY
ACT
Senior Tanner Fangman earned the
highest possible composite score of
36 on the ACT college admission and
placement exam. The achievement is
significant and rare. On average, less
than one-tenth of one percent of all
testers earn the top score.

NEW ACT PREP PROGRAM
INITIATED
W
hile Covington
Catholic’s ACT scores
are consistently higher
than the Kentucky and national
averages, CCH has instituted a
program to further improve student
performance. Beginning this fall,
all juniors will participate in the
Cambridge ACT prep program.
Students take a pre-assessment to
identify strengths and areas that
need attention, then throughout
the school year, they will work
both independently and within
their classes on areas that need
improvement. Students take a final
ACT near the end of the year to
assess their progress on this allimportant component of college
admission. An additional element
of the program is Application
Preparation. This will help students
better complete their college
applications in order to maximize
their chances for admission to their
first-choice schools.

NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS
Jonathan Wessels and Tanner Fangman were recognized by
the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as Semifinalists.
Last spring, roughly 1.5 million juniors across the country took
the PSAT/NMSQT. Of those juniors, only 16,000 or 1% were
named National Merit Semifinalists. Joseph Kendall and William
Nutter were named Commended Students. These designations
are the result of scores achieved on the PSAT/NMSQT.

LEAVING A LEGACY
ave you ever opened a
piece of mail and found an
unexpected check or had
the excitement of walking down a
road and finding a $20 bill at your
feet? I experienced this feeling
on February 22, 2012. I had the
pleasure of opening a letter that stated
Covington Catholic High School
was one of the Catholic institutions
named as a beneficiary under the
Last Will and Testament of William
M. Hoppenjans. Bill, or Hop, was
number two in his graduating class of
1966, the salutatorian, and recipient
of the Principal Award. I found a
copy of Bill’s graduation speech in
the 1966 yearbook. In the speech,
he quoted, “No man is an island; no
man stands alone. Each man’s joy
is joy to me; each man’s grief is my
own.” Truly, Bill lived by these words.
This unexpected gift allowed the
administration to reflect on what the
school really needed that the current
budget did not include. The answer
came quickly – the purchase of three
lab tables for the Biology, Physics,
and Chemistry rooms that had to be
eliminated from the budget when the
new school was built.
Covington Catholic was blessed by
Bill Hoppenjans’ generosity and
passion as we have been by so many
others. Please consider leaving a
legacy gift in your will through
annuities or trusts. This is a great way
to insure Covington Catholic High
School remains an educational leader
in the community for many years to
come, and always seek the advice of
your attorney and/or financial advisor
regarding bequests and planned giving.

ALUMNI
REUNION UPDATES
CLASS OF 1962: On September 21 and 22,
45 members from the Class of 1962, our newest
Golden Colonels, gathered to relive timeworn
memories, renew old friendships, and catch up on
the last fifty years. The weekend events began with
a golf outing and stag on Friday night followed by
an alumni and spouse dinner with music at Griffin
Centre Alumni Hall on Saturday.
CLASS OF 1967: 33 members of the Class of ‘67 got
together for their 45th reunion on Saturday, September
29. Some arrived early to watch as CovCath beat
Pendleton County 70-0. Following the game, members
met in Alumni Hall and caught up with friends they
hadn’t seen, in some cases, since 1967. Good memories
of time spent at CovCath were shared, especially the
heartbreaking loss to Earlington in the state basketball
finals, and the rousing success of the class play, West Side
Story. We toured the ‘new’ school and Alumni Center.
Everyone agreed the facilities are outstanding!
CLASS OF 1977: The Class of 1977 gathered
on September 8 for Reunion Weekend festivities
and the football game against Boone County.
Following the game, the group gathered in
Alumni Hall.
Pictured: Jeff Wigger, Mark Linz, Bill Roth,
Kelly Reed, Kevin Flynn, and Mark Bezold
CLASS OF 1987: 24 played golf at Devou on Friday,
September 7. Even though we had a few first timers,
everyone enjoyed the day. Ron Rohling suffered the only
minor injury after being struck by an errant shot from the
Maschinot group. (No one claimed responsibility.) Ron
shook it off and finished the round in true Colonel fashion.
On Saturday, we met the alumni of Notre Dame Academy
for a dinner dance. The hall was decorated in pure 80s
fashion. Craig Cleveland and Brian Northcutt were dressed
in theme which reminded us why we no longer dress like
that! We finally ended the evening at the Saddle Club. After
all was said and done, everyone went home having rekindled
a little bit of “the spirit that will not die.”

CLASS OF 2002: The Class of 2002 enjoyed a great day on September 8.
We enjoyed seeing CCH shut out Boone County and then had a great
time at Alumni Hall. Richard Dickmann took the class on a tour and all
were amazed at the changes. Later, 25 members went to the Red’s game
where they enjoyed the Riverboat Party Deck. The class is planning to
attend future basketball and football games and hang out at Alumni Hall
after. Anyone interested in joining the fun should contact Chris Davis:
[email protected] or John Siemer.
On behalf of our 10 year reu

FROM THE ALUMNI DIRECTOR
RICHARD DICKMANN ‘80
As we embark on another school year full of activity, I have reflected on the progress
of the Alumni Association over the past year. It is wonderful to see the way Colonel
Alumni have begun to embrace the idea of strengthening our alumni foundation.
From emails received to those who stop by, your words of encouragement have been
inspirational.
As I have mentioned in previous Journal articles, the brotherhood that we are part of as
alumni of Covington Catholic is very strong. Our pride runs deep and our ability to be
there for one another is unprecedented. To bring out the best in our efforts to support
our alma mater, I have put together a schedule of events and activities to further bring
us together. This schedule will take better shape this year and will become standard in
the years to come.
My approach to the position of Alumni Director has also encompassed a mission
to include everyone in the Colonel Community. What does this mean? In building
awareness, I have been approached by alumni and parents about the inclusion of those
who are not alumni but feel strongly about CCH. To honor that, some of our events
will be geared to the entire group of friends, alumni, students, and faculty of Covington
Catholic.
By the time you receive this publication, the Covington Catholic Community will have
had its first organized Spirit Week. The goal was to bring out the SPIRIT THAT WILL
NOT DIE in all of us. On the kick-off date of September 23, we had our first ever
Blue Out at Sunday Mass. Hopefully you were among the sea of blue at your parish.
The final day of Spirit Week was the Homecoming game which was to be just that, a
homecoming for all to the campus of CCH.
The future structure of this alumni movement will be through committee involvement.
In my last article, I asked for alumni to come forward to assist me with this mission.
It is time now to create an active board of directors for the Alumni Association. If you
have a desire to give your time in this way, please email me at [email protected].
Thank you for all of your support thus far. There has been great progress, but the best is
yet to come!
GO COLONELS!
