“GLOBAL BRANDING YOUR SKILLS”
Bob Plott is a North Carolina native who
traces his roots in our state to 1750, when
his great, great, great Grandfather, Johannes
Plott
arrived
here
from
Germany with
five of
his
family’s special
breed of dogs.
Now
these
dogs, the Plott
Hound,
are
renowned
as
one
of
the
world’s finest
breeds, and are
recognized as
the State Dog
of North Carolina.
Bob’s highly acclaimed history of the breed
—Strike & Stay: The Story of the Plott
Hound—was published in late 2007 by The
History Press. His second book, A History
of Hunting in the Great Smoky Mountains,
was published in late 2008. His third book,
Legendary Hunters of the Southern
Highlands—A Century of Survival and Sport
in the Great Smoky Mountains, will be
published in Spring 2010. Bob is shown
above at Plott Ridge Kennels with Buddy,
one of his favorite Plott hounds.
Bob is an accomplished wood carver, sketch
artist, martial artist and historical re-enactor.

The Plott Hound:
History and Lore
Students can learn about essential 18th
century skills, such as fire-making, camping,
outdoor cooking, hide-tanning, salt-making,
etc., as well as crafting and using historic
implements such as powder horns, knives,
hunting bags and other essential tools.
Bob offers a variety of historical programs
for a wide range of audiences. His client list
includes elementary schools, colleges, civic
and historical organizations, as well as
museums and historical sites. Programs can
fit almost any budget and can be customized
to fit any time frame from thirty minutes to
two days and can be done indoors or
outdoors year round. Contact Bob for
details, costs and availability.
Honoring History
Everyone loves a good story, and can learn
important history lessons in the process.
The story of the loyal, lovable Plott Hound
is also the personal story of 16-year old
Johannes Plott’s migration from Europe in
1750, completely alone after his brother
Enoch’s tragic death at sea, and the western
movement of early settlers from coastal
villages, ultimately into the mountains of
North Carolina.

Program Details
In June 2009—twenty years after being
honored as the official state dog of North
Carolina--the Plott hound and the Plott
family were honored with a state historical
marker in Haywood County, North Carolina.
It is only the second marker in N. C. history
honoring an animal. Bob spearheaded these
efforts along with state employee Ansley
Wegner. He coordinated the program and
unveiling
ceremony
at
Hazelwood
Elementary School on June 8, 2009.
