Josefina Vázquez Mota
Josefina Vázquez Mota is deeply
committed to the development of Mexico
and the Mexican people. In her many
roles as mother, politician, government
official, activist, and advocate of the
Mexican community in the United States,
she has fulfilled her duties with passion
and rectitude. Today, she is the
President of Juntos Podemos, a
foundation that promotes the well-being
of Mexicans in the United States and
strengthens their ties with Mexico.
Since August 2012, Josefina has supported the prosperity of Mexico and the
Mexican community in the United States through research, publications, and
connections with relevant actors. She was the Partido Acción Nacional (National
Action Party) candidate in the 2012 presidential election, making history as the first
female presidential candidate from a major political party in Mexico. Previously, she
was a member of the Mexican Congress (2009-2011), where she served as party
leader.
Josefina was also the first woman to lead the Mexican Secretariat of Education
(2006-2009) and the Secretariat of Social Development (2000-2006). In both
positions, she actively promoted the linkage and development of the Mexican
community in the United States. During her tenure as Secretary of Social
Development, she implemented a community remittances program, Programa 3x1,
which aimed to foster the development of recipient regions of remittances in
Mexico. Thanks to this program, associations of migrants in the United States grew
in number from 20 to nearly 1000.
