As I sit
here and start
writing my first
Commodore
of 11 articles
for the Poop
Deck, my thoughts are wandering as to what
to talk about. Where do I begin to express
my excitement and gratitude to be your
Commodore for 2016-2017? I am extremely
humbled by this honor and hope that my
leadership this year will reflect the love and
commitment that I have for this Club.
The Change of Watch marked the
beginning of another year with a new board.
The evening was exceptional with great
food and entertainment. It was topped off
the following day with the celebration of
the Club’s 70th birthday! Thank you Harry
Blenker for your personal touch and the most
amazing display of fireworks. If you missed
this event, you certainly lost out on a weekend
of festivities.
We are very fortunate to have outstanding
management led by George Gordon and a

joyful and eager staff. When you enter the
doors of the BYC, you feel relaxed and at
home. The participation in the Club reflects
the accepted and welcomed changes of this
past year. Our membership growth is nearly
at maximum capacity and many believe it
feels as though we have already reached
our limit. The growth of our Club may be
nearing its capacity but it’s also nice to see so
many members (especially young families)
enjoying their Club. As of this writing, our
membership total has reached 607.
The Club is becoming a “less paper”
environment. We have begun the “less paper”
process this month by cutting the publication
of the Poop Deck in half as we access the
publication online. The Poop Deck will no
longer be automatically mailed to your home.
This is the first of several items during the
year that will be limited to online viewing.
In order to assist you with the transition,
the Club will be providing computer lessons
on how to navigate through and around our
website. In addition, copies of the events
JULY/AUGUST 2016
calendar will be provided in the lobby.
Communication within our membership is
imperative, especially with all the activities
provided. If you prefer receiving a Poop Deck
in the mail please contact the office so they
can accommodate your request. For those of
you interested in classes, please watch for an
e-mail to alert you to the date and time of the
class.
Summer is here and vacation plans have
been made. Many of you may be gone as
you try to escape the hot, humid, and rainy
Florida summer, I wish you all safe travels!
For those of you who will be around, please
watch the Poop Deck calendar as there are
some well-planned weekends coming up in
July and August for your enjoyment. This
being our summer issue, we will include
calendars for July, August, and September.
The next publication won’t be until
September.

Around Your Club
Summer has arrived and all that entails. The temperatures are on the
rise, so it’s a perfect time to take a dip in the Club pool and enjoy your
favorite beverage. The pool bar has expanded hours for the summer
months. We have added Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00am-8pm to
keep up with the summer demand. We have some new events scheduled
for this summer. We are going to have our first annual Clam and Lobster
Bake on July 23rd as well as our first annual Rib Contest on August 14th.

By the time you read this article, you may have already heard that our
Executive Chef Brian Elwood has handed in his resignation and is no
longer with us. Chef Brian is moving on to new challenges in his life and
we wish him well. This gives us an opportunity to find a new innovative
executive Chef that will give us a fresh new look in our culinary
operations. The resume process has already started and interviews will
start when we narrow down our search. Please be aware this by no means
affects our daily operation. We have two great Sous Chefs in the kitchen,
Chef Richard and Chef Frank. Both have stepped up and will continue to
hold down the fort until we find our next Executive Chef. – George

Hi Everyone! Well I believe summer is here, no matter that it has not officially begun.
Between the heat, humidity and Tropical Storm Colin, I think we can safely say it is
summertime in Florida!!! I know that the summer is generally a slower time at the BYC
and so I hope that with the kids out of school and people vacationing that you will still
find time to enjoy our Club. It’s the perfect time to relax at our beautiful pool bar or the
Tiki with friends and enjoy our beautiful sunsets!!
There are a few new things I would like to let you all know about that will be
happening this summer. First off, the “Lobster Drop” aka Clambake that will be taking
place on July 23rd! It is sure to be a great event out by the pool with great food and
music! Next, a first for us and taking a page from the Chili/Wing Cookoff, we will be
doing a “Rib-fest” which will invite all of you rib aficionados to come out and show your
ability to cook delicious ribs for the Club!!! That will be held on Sunday, August 14th.
Please call the Club for all the information and rules etc. and come out and get your
chef’s apron on and have some fun!!!
In closing, I just hope that everyone will have a relaxing, enjoyable summer and
get ready for a great year ahead at the BYC. Your Entertainment Committee has been
busy planning for the upcoming year and we are very excited for what we feel will offer
something for everyone!! In the meantime, I hope to see everyone as often as possible

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing
With the help of individual BYC member
contributions for Project Healing Waters
Fly Fishing, we hosted an outing Saturday,
May 14th, during the Crosthwait Fishing
Tournament. Twenty-one (21) disabled
veterans were treated to a morning on
the water. This day begun with coffee &
doughnuts in the Tiki Hut and ended with
a terrific lunch donated by the Anna Maria
Oyster Bar. These veterans are currently in
programs working their way back to productive lives. Local guides and member volunteers
provided the boats and directed the fishing. Some of the names you may know are Yellowfin
Boats, Chase Gause and John

We started the year with a cocktail party at BYC and have now
officially hit the 6 month mark with approximately 40 members
(during Season). We are continually getting larger with more
interested people joining each month. We added 2 more couples in
May, although you can certainly join as a single as we have several.
There is no shortage of fun and there is always room for more

As I am assembling my gear for my upcoming adventures in Alaska
and the mountains of Idaho, I wanted to take a few moments to say

Navigators Club Trip to Ft. Meyers/Punta Gorda
A big “shout-out” to Howie & Anita Stein for arranging a fun-packed
Navigators Club weekend trip May 13th to May 15th to Ft. Meyers and
Punta Gorda! Those of us traveling by land checked into our hotel near
the Ft. Meyers Airport Friday afternoon. Three sailboats, Catalyst, Orion
and Cricket, headed south earlier in the week hoping to meet those driving
to the weekend destination. Ilene Skeen and Josh Huntington on their
30’ Maine Cat, Catalyst, made it to St. Charles Yacht Club, Ft. Meyers.
Unfortunately, the other two cruisers had equipment and family issues
causing them to head back north.
Friday afternoon we were all “game” for our challenge at the Escape Room
Adventures. We were divided into two groups of four to be locked in
rooms to solve the clues in each room within 60 minutes. We had to figure
out clues to unlock various boxes, doors, etc. I think if someone had been
allowed to videotape us in these rooms, it might have been a hilarious You
Tube video. It was definitely challenging and a lot of fun. Neither group
made it out before 60 minutes. Needless to say, we worked up an appetite.
We then made our way to the “Cape Cod Fish Company”, a New England
style seafood shack for dinner.
Saturday we toured the Edison/Ford Winter Estates and Museum in
Ft. Meyers. This historical site and museum is on 21 acres of botanical
gardens beside the Caloosahatchee River. We learned so much about the
amazing Thomas Alva Edison and Henry Ford. It was wonderful. None of
us had ever been there. From there we drove to downtown Ft. Meyers for
lunch at “Ford’s Garage”, a great place for burgers and beer. We happened
on to a biker’s event in downtown as they were setting up booths. We
browsed in the downtown shops. We then went to the Ft. Meyers Brewing
Company, Lee County’s first microbrewery. The owner took us on a tour
and explained the process. We ended up tasting several of their brews.
At six fifteen we gathered for our social hour on Catalyst docked at St.
Charles Yacht Club followed by an elegant dinner at the yacht club. We
were so impressed when we opened the menu as on the menu was printed
“St. Charles Yacht Club welcomes Bradenton Yacht Club”. We said our
good-byes to Ilene and Josh who are headed south to the Keys. What a
lovely day with friends.
On Sunday we headed north to Punta Gorda with a stop at the beautiful
Isles Yacht Club for their Sunday Brunch. A jazz duo played as we enjoyed
the spread and the warm welcome this yacht club gave our group. We

ended the weekend at Fisherman’s Village where
the guys enjoyed the Military Heritage Museum as
the ladies shopped.
So far we have been to St. Augustine,
Captiva Island, Tarpon Springs and
Ft. Meyers/Punta Gorda. Future trips
abroad include Ireland and Iceland.

always tie in visits to FCYC yacht clubs
whenever possible when we travel

Let me introduce myself, I am Diane Sullo and I have taken over the
reins of the Navigators Club (Jack Gorman was our founder/leader
and with the Change of Watch, is now the Vice Commodore of BYC).
The Navigators are planning to attend the bi-monthly meeting of the
Florida Council of Yacht Clubs at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami
for the weekend of September 10th. We would like to invite other Club
members to join us and show a strong representation of BYC during this
special weekend. The main banquet is on Saturday evening, however,
there will be a weekend of fun-filled activities for all! Remember,
next year BYC will be hosting this event so we can show members of
the FCYC why we love our Club so much! If you would like to join
us, please let me know and I can pass along further details such as
accommodations, etc. I look forward to hearing from many of you!!!

Cruising - The July and August doldrums are upon us. No need
to look at the weather report unless you’re checking the north Atlantic
tropical storm information. It’s going to be 30% chance of afternoon
thunderstorms, eighty-five to ninety degrees and humidity greater than
eighty-five percent. My heart goes out to all fellow sailors who have to
deal with first mates (or captains) with bad hair days! Nevertheless, this
is the time to plan the upcoming year.
The monthly cruises are in the planning phase. Although the
destinations are not inked into a sail plan, ten members have already
stepped forward to captain monthly cruises. The cruises start in August,
lead by Anna and John Broshears accompanied by their nineteen year old
cat Pinky, who looks like a supporting character in a Stephen King novel,
but she’s still perky and has a reasonable sense of humor for a cat. The
September cruise will be captained by Past Commodore Mark Berté and
Denise. This will be followed in October by cruise leaders Steve and Keri
Hockett on Toasted Mostly, which lived up to her name last year when
the air conditioner failed. The updated Sail Cruise Fleet calendar can be
accessed on the BYC website under Sail Cruise Fleet activities.
Although cruises may be altered by weather, the monthly Sail Cruise
Fleet meetings are always “steady as she goes, full steam ahead” every
first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm. As if socializing and dining
with fellow sailors is not enough, along with a modicum of lighthearted
business, guest presentations have never been disappointing. The June
meeting presentation, Ramblings of a Florida Boat Builder by Bob Pitt,
was spellbinding. Born in Sarasota, he was inspired by his Bahamian
heritage that included shipbuilders and captains. He developed a
fascination for maritime history and carpentry and assisted Manatee
Village Historical Park to interpret maritime history and volunteered
for the Florida Maritime Museum in Cortez. Our July meeting on
Wednesday the 6th is a do not miss event. The almost annual, highly
coveted BYC Tough Luck Award will be presented to a deserving BYC
sailor. This award was first presented in 2003 with several random
years of no presentations, evidently for a dearth of tough luck. However,
this year has several tough luck magnets that are each very deserving
of formal recognition. The Tough Luck Award presentation could only
be followed by a presentation the caliber of that by Past Commodore
Joe McClash speaking on the BYC to Havana Cruise. McClash’s
presentation on Cuba will be an enthralling exposé of an island rich in
history and that the U.S. automobile industry left behind.

Racing - May is always a favorite month for
sailboat racers because it is the month of the
Bone Island Regatta, which starts in Sarasota
and ends up in Key West. In typical springtime
fashion, the race is always unpredictable. Last
year several boats had to drop out due to high
winds and rough seas. This year, however,
two thirds of the fleet were not able to finish

Only spinnaker boats and multihulls were
able to finish the regatta in the required time frame. Still, several
BYC participants completed the journey and were rewarded with
a beautiful stay in

May 13th was the Davis Island Yacht Club J/24 “Rodeo”. Some
St. Petersburg Yacht Club friends of mine and I borrowed a boat and
raced the two day regatta with both days having nearly perfect wind.
There were nine boats in the whole regatta, all of which are serious
J/24 sailors, so we were quite pleasantly
surprised to find ourselves finishing in 7th.
At the time of writing, the race calendars
are being finalized for the Sarasota Boat of
the Year Series and the Suncoast Boat of the
Year series. That having been said, here are

Banquet Banter
Summer is shaping up quite nicely! I hope everyone is having a
great time. I am still trying to get used to the heat and humidity that
summer brings to Florida so I thought I would share some ideas
that help keep me cool!
Refreshing adult beverages that come to mind are blueberry
vodka and lemonade. Not too sweet but perfect on a hot day at the
pool. My other favorite drink consists of equal parts white wine of
your choice, St. Germain and soda water. I like St. Germain as it is
made from handpicked elderflower blossoms, which gives it a very
distinguished flavor. It is also great as a martini or with champagne.
Enjoy!
We’ve just updated our menu and added some great items for
lunch and dinner. The pulled pork is one of my favorites as well as
the Walleye fish and chips.
Summer is also a great time for parties! Pool parties, birthday
dinners and showers or take advantage of all the fun events the

The BYC Long Wall will fill with sail boats and tall masts,
as BYC hosts the 34th annual Fall Kick-Off Regatta. Boats
will arrive all day Friday, and the races will be on Saturday
& Sunday, with an awards cook-out & celebration Sunday
