The Power of
community
The amazing thing about community is its
ability to unite people around a common
purpose and goal. When people are united, a
community develops exponential POWER to
achieve its goal. We each have that POWER
in Lawrence Township schools and our
surrounding community. We each have the
choice to come together and unite around a
commitment to our children and their futures.
r The Foundation does the same for Lawrence
In the last year, the Foundation developed the
Power of Community effort. This is an effort to
rally our community around our public schools
and the children that attend them, giving them
the support they need to not just survive, but
thrive. The Foundation’s role in this effort is to
communicate the needs that our children have
and that exist within our schools and ask for
your financial support to help meet
these needs.
Community goes back into the schools
touching our children through mentoring,
tutoring and college prep support,
technology resources, grants for the arts,
science, math, physical fitness, and more.
r Our vision also encompasses building a
Challenges
r As the overarching entity that raises funds
In previous correspondence, we mentioned
that recent cuts in public funding for education
and the property tax locally have greatly
impacted our public schools. In some cases,
these changes have negatively impacted our
children. As one example, children attending
Kindergarten through Second grade no longer
have the support of Instructional Assistants in
their classrooms. Instructional Assistants are an
important support system not only for children
who may need extra assistance, but also for the
teacher, who sometimes has up to 28 children
in one classroom.
The Solution
We
These are real issues that affect real kids—today.
We do not have the luxury of waiting to see
how this all will unfold. We must prepare today
for tomorrow. Kids lives are at stake. So what
are we going to do about it? In addition to your
financial support, we need your advocacy. If you
run into someone who does not know about
the Foundation or does not understand our
purpose, here are some things you can share:

Township schools. We connect with parents,
alumni, teachers, administration, business
owners, home owners and alumni to ask for
financial support to meet the various needs
of Lawrence Township schools and the kids
that attend our schools. We call this effort
the Power of Community.
r The money raised through the Power of
sustainable foundation for the future. In our
crystal ball, we see an endowment or fund
for each school that earns income on its
principal. This income can be used annually
where it is needed most.
for Lawrence Township schools, we are not
in competition with the PFOs, boosters,
athletics, arts, band, etc. We work as partners,
each knowledgeable about the other and
able to speak to potential investors and
connect them to opportunities that are
appropriate for that particular donor. Our
roles may be different, but working together
as a team our purpose is the same—to serve
our kids.
r From a financial perspective, we are asking
every member of our community to join the
Power of Community effort. Specifically, we
ask that investors become sustaining donors
by making an annual, ongoing commitment
that can be conveniently charged to a credit
card monthly, quarterly, or annually. Pledge
forms are located online at www.msdltf.org.
When every household in this community
gives an average of $10/month to the Power
of Community effort, we have the capacity, as
a community, to raise $13 million! To put this
in perspective, that would allow us to pay for
the 142 Kindergarten through Second grade
Instructional Assistants that are needed, on an
annual basis (a $2 million price tag).

key initiatives
The Foundation will continue to focus its fundraising
efforts on programs and efforts that fall into one of the
following four key initiatives:
Annual Report 2010-2011
1 High School Success
and “Year 13” Prep.
Ensuring that ALL kids successfully
complete high school and are fully
prepared and equipped for “Year 13.”
Whether “Year 13” means college,
the military or a job, our kids will be
prepared.

21st Century Learning
Equipping every child with the
appropriate tools for learning and
success. This includes the skills of
collaboration, inquiry- and projectbased learning, technology, creativity
and innovation, which can all be
taught and are key components
to succeeding in our growing
knowledge-based economy and
global world.

Capacity Building
Increasing our capacity to connect
philanthropy to education. In order
to continue to serve the needs of our
children in Lawrence Township, the
Foundation must continue to grow
and be a healthy fundraising entity
that enables us to connect with our
community’s philanthropy for
the benefit of our children and
their futures.
.
4
Sustainable Future
Building revenues and resources that
will be here for the next generation
of students—through planned giving
opportunities and the establishment
of endowments for tomorrow’s
children.

AVID
(Advancement via Individual Determination) is a
national college-preparedness program getting
results at over 4,500 schools throughout the
country, including Lawrence Township. AVID
students are those who are in the academic
middle—they are striving to achieve, yet falling
short of their full potential. AVID provides the
support and rigor needed for these students to
be successful in high school and to be prepared
for college.
AVID truly has been a life-changing experience
for Lawrence Township students. Aside from
encouraging students to enroll in more rigorous
courses, practice note-taking and studying
skills, and providing mentors to help them
set and achieve personal goals, AVID also
provides Lawrence Township students with a
sense of family. Additionally, and perhaps most
importantly, AVID is instilling a sense of selfconfidence in young people that empowers
them to be their best. For the 2nd year in a
row, the AVID program at Lawrence Central
has graduated a student within the Top 30
Academic students of her class. This 2011
graduate, Emily Thomas, says, “As a freshman,
I did not think I would be among the academic
elite, but through goal setting and the individual
determination to reach these goals, I was able to
recognize my potential and rise to it.”

For nine consecutive years, USA Funds has
made a significant gift to the Lawrence
Township School Foundation to help fund
the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence
Township’s AVID program. This year, the
Foundation received a grant for $100,000
that will continue to support AVID in
Lawrence Township.
MAC
The Foundationsponsored MACs
(My Achievement
Center) have
just completed
their 6th year
of operation
and continue to
grow. The MACs,
which are available and free of charge to all
high school students, provide not only tutoring
services, but an opportunity for students to
make connections with caring adults who work
with them in a small, intimate setting. They have
become an integral part of both high schools
and are now the hub of many other programs
such as WIN (Lawrence Central) & After-MAC
(Lawrence North), which provide tutoring after
school hours.

“I don’t really think (Lawrence Central) would
function without the MAC. The tutors really
know the tools and techniques that we need
in order to retain what we learn when the
classroom is not enough.”
Upon the recommendation of LC Alumni Frank
Levinson, Ph.D., the Foundation received a
$330,000 endowment for Lawrence Central’s
WIN program from the Small World Institute
Fund, an advised fund of the Silicon Valley
Community Foundation. It is the vision of the
Foundation to develop innovative and creative
revenue streams, such as Frank Levinson’s
generous donation, that would endow
programs such as the MAC and AVID. With
endowments, we create the opportunity to not
only support the current programs for future
students, but to grow them and work with the
District to fund other exciting programs for
Lawrence Township students.
The Kids Up & Running program is an after
school running club that increases fitness
awareness among students and parents.
The mission is to challenge students to
experience the benefits of goal-setting,
character development, adult mentoring and
improved health by providing them with a true
life-changing experience. The ultimate goal
is to train three days a week and compete in
a 5k run or half marathon.

The Lawrence Township School
Foundation created the Legacy
Society to recognize individuals
who have made a planned or
deferred gift to the Foundation
through a variety of giving
opportunities. These include a
bequest in a will, a provision in
a trust, a life insurance policy or
a retirement plan.
Legacy Society members
understand the importance of
building sustainable schools and
are committed to the future of
Lawrence Township children.
This is a way for Foundation
donors to contribute to the
long-term health of our
community and our children.
For more information about
how to make a planned or
deferred gift, please contact
the Foundation office.
The Foundation appreciates the
support of the Legacy Society
members listed below. Thank
you for believing in the future of
Lawrence Township kids!
