Ramps Up at I-79

Plans progress at Newbury, UPMC Children’s Hospital

C
onstruction projects are moving ahead at the
Interstate 79 ramp in South Fayette, with the
goal of bringing more stores, services and
road upgrades to township residents.
Plans are progressing for the Children’s
Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC outpatient
center to open September 29, The Crossings at South
Fayette shopping center to open later this year and
Newbury Market to open in 2016.
Aldi, Giant Eagle, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Starbucks
are some of the many businesses expected to join the
township in the new developments.
South Fayette manager Ryan Eggleston said the
township is seeing a growing interest in commercial
construction around Route 50 and the Bridgeville
interchange of I-79.

“With UPMC set to open this fall, we really think that will be a
catalyst to continued commercial development,” Mr. Eggleston
said. “It definitely seems like it’s ramping up.”
With new commercial centers will come road
improvements—including adaptive traffic lights and additional
turn lanes—aimed at helping traffic flow through the
Washington Pike and Route 50 corridors.
Workers this summer have been creating a new intersection
with a traffic signal and turn lanes on Route 50/Millers Run
Road.
The intersection will provide access to Newbury Market and,
on the opposite side of Route 50, to the site of the former Star
City Cinemas and UPMC’s new $24 million, 60,000-square-foot
pediatric center. The pediatric clinic’s grand opening details will
be forthcoming.

Workers continued making progress in June on construction of the $24
million, 60,000-square-foot pediatric center by Children’s Hospital of
Pittsburgh of UPMC. The medical office building is set to open this fall in
South Fayette.
Newbury Market’s pedestrian-friendly main street will include shops,
restaurants and outdoor gathering spots.
Aldi, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Starbucks are expected to open later this
year in a new shopping center called The Crossings at South Fayette.

The Crossings at South Fayette
This 37,000-square-foot shopping center will include an
Aldi supermarket, Chipotle restaurant, Starbucks coffee
shop and several other businesses on eight acres at the
T-intersection of Washington Pike and Route 50/Millers Run
Road.
Opening is anticipated before the end of the year.
RBG Development Inc. and property owner Bridgeville
Realty LP have gotten the go-ahead from the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation to replace the intersection’s
traffic signal system, which also will serve the shopping
center’s main driveway.
Newbury Market
Grand opening is anticipated in 2016 for Newbury
Market, a planned 88-acre, 1.2 million-square-foot
shopping center bordered by Route 50, Presto-Sygan
Road and I-79.
Highlights include a Giant Eagle grocery store, a
Courtyard by Marriott hotel, two office buildings, five
large retail stores and a pedestrian-friendly town center
with shops, restaurants and outdoor gathering spots.
This summer and fall, developer EQA Landmark
Communities/Newbury Development Associates LP is
installing infrastructure for water, sewer and storm water
and working on an entrance road from Route 50.

Pavilion

Park
When a backyard isn’t big enough for your get-together,
consider gathering at South Fayette Township’s new
pavilion in Fairview Park.

T
he community pavilion, which
opened for rentals in June, is the
township’s largest shelter and offers
the most amenities.
The pavilion accommodates about 200
people and provides built-in restrooms,
a food serving area with electricity,
aluminum picnic tables and access to
fields, trails, sports courts and green vistas
in the 125-acre park.
Butch Truitt, the parks and recreation
director, said about 90 percent of the
construction was completed in-house by
the township’s public works crew.
The three-year project was made
possible by township funds and a
generous donation from the Rotary Club
of Bridgeville-South Fayette.
Businesses and individuals are welcome
to inquire about naming rights to the new
pavilion.

The pavilion’s daily rental fee for South
Fayette residents is $200 on weekdays
(Monday through Friday), or $300 on
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Nonresidents pay $350 on weekdays, or
$450 on weekends and holidays.
A separate $250 check for a security
deposit also is required of all renters.
Alcohol permits are available at a cost of
$15 for residents or $25 for nonresidents.

event will occur Oct. 23, 24 and 25.

outh Fayette’s annual Disabled Sportsman
Hunt is set for Thurs., Oct. 23, through Sat.,
Oct. 25.
The three-day event includes an assisted
deer hunt and celebration dinner. Participation
is free for South Fayette residents and
nonresidents who hold a Pennsylvania
Game Commission permit for hunters with
disabilities.
