The Pie Seller, The Drunk, and The Lady: Heroes of the 1833 Cholera Epidemic in Lexington, Kentucky

In 1833, when Lexington was a new city, a cholera epidemic struck which decimated the
citizenry by 500 souls. In the midst of this disaster, three unlikely heroes arose - a former
slave, a homeless vagrant, and a society matron. This fact-based account brings you their
fascinating stories and takes you through cholera's grip, as each answers the call for
humanity. Book can be pre-purchased at the Fayette County Extension Office during regular
business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Purchase of and/or
pre-reading of books are not required.
Eating Smart & Healthy Leader Lesson

Eating is an activity that most of us do at least three times a day. We eat
because food appeals to our taste buds. We also eat because food is good for
us. Eating provides our body with energy so we can breathe and function and
impacts our overall health.

County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences will share ways in
which nutritious food and healthy eating can help maintain a healthy body and
protect against various diseases. She will present strategies for healthier,
smarter eating as well as participation in a taste test challenge.

Sewing Club
The Sew-Mores Club meets on the first Saturday of
the month. Club members connect, work and share
practical and creative sewing projects. This is an open

Do you already Love to make cards, scrapbook, or
paper craft? Want to learn from others how to make
beautiful cards and picture layouts? Would you love to
get together with a group of others who love and want
to learn how to paper craft?

can get a paper craft group started. Getting started
with paper crafting is easy and with a few small
supplies you can make cards and other items you

Food Safety Practices Prevent Illness
We have always warned against consuming raw dough
or batter, as the ingredients have the potential to cause
food borne illness when not properly cooked.
Because of recent outbreaks of illnesses that could be
related to consuming uncooked products, the FDA
has issued the following recommendation:
Do not eat any raw cookie dough or any other raw
dough product that’s supposed to be cooked or baked.
Follow package directions for cooking at proper
temperatures and for specified times.
Wash hands, work surfaces, and utensils thoroughly
after contact with raw dough products.
Keep raw foods separate from other foods while
preparing them to prevent any contamination that
might be present from spreading.
Follow label directions to chill products promptly after
purchase and after using them.

Quilter’s Guild
Quibble Summer Meetings 2016
If you have an interest in learning how to make quilts or improve your quilting and patchwork skills, we invite
you to join us at the Quilters Guild of the Bluegrass. Our meetings include a Sit and Sew session at 6:00 p.m.,
followed by a short business meeting and the program at 7:00 p.m. The monthly program provides us with
new skills and/or insights into different types of quilts and quilt making. Members are encouraged to bring
completed quilts (and quilt tops) for Show and Tell.
Here’s what’s planned for the upcoming meeting:
August 9th program will be a super show and tell for the quilters to show off what they have been doing -- be
sure to bring something to show!
You are welcome to come to our meetings at the Fayette County Extension Building on the second
Tuesday of every month year round. Mark your calendar and join the fun and education related to the art of
quilting.

Tips for Insect Repellent Use
If you are in an area with mosquitos, you will likely find that
repellents are very helpful tools in preventing many mosquito
bites. Insect repellents are made for use on bare skin. There
are many different types of repellents available including
creams, sprays (aerosol and pump spray), solid repellents
(sticks) and liquids. There are also products available that
produce a smoke or vapor that is used to prevent insects,
usually mosquitos, from bothering and biting people. These
types of products may be torches, candles or coils. Although
repellents do not kill insects that may pester you this time of
year, they certainly discourage bites from happening.

Here are a few rules to remember when you are using insect
repellents:


Avoid putting repellents on children’s hands. Children
are more likely to put their hands near their eyes and mouth.

You should never put repellents on skin that is irritated
or broken.

Make sure to cover all exposed skin. A mosquito has the
ability to find an uncovered spot the size of dime.

Make sure to read how long the protection will last.
Different types of repellent have different amounts of time
for protection.
Make sure to wash all skin that has had repellent on it
after coming indoors.

The University of Kentucky (UK) Alumni Association, Fayette County Cooperative
Extension Services, and UK Human Resources Staff Career Development are pleased to
announce summer 2016 Central Kentucky Job Club’s schedule. The purpose of the
Central Kentucky Job Club is to provide a positive environment for motivated job
seekers to meet, connect, share and learn. The free group is open to the public and
meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, from 9:00–10:15 a.m. at the
Fayette County Cooperative Extension office, 1140 Red Mile Place, Lexington, KY. Business attire is
encouraged. Convenient, free parking is available. Central Kentucky Job Club is for you if you are motivated and
currently out of work, underemployed or looking to make a career transition. Attendees are encouraged to dress in

Volunteer Program!
A new program for Fayette County
What is the Champion Food Volunteer Program?
The Champion Food Volunteer program provides volunteers a foundation of knowledge,
skills, and competencies in basic nutrition; food safety, handling, and preparation; cooking
methods and techniques; food science; and physical activity.
The program allows people who have an interest in food, cooking, and nutrition a way to
hone their skills and take them to a new level, all while helping their community. Upon
completion of the training, volunteers will commit to spending a specified amount of time
sharing their enhanced expertise with others.
Program Requirements
Attend five, six-hour sessions and complete all pre-and post-activities. Topics include Basic
Nutrition; Food Safety, Handling, And Preparation; Cooking Methods And Techniques;
Food Science; And Physical Activity. $30 class fee which includes all recipes, class
materials, cooking items, and much more.

the FCS Extension Agents over a period of 18 months.

2016 “FOOD FOR THOUGHT” classes
Food for Thought classes are designed to teach you everything you need to know about making your favorite
dishes. These comprehensive cooking classes are made available through the Fayette County Extension Family
and Consumer Sciences program. Each class will teach the core techniques behind classic food to provide
tasteful recipes that can duplicated at home.
All classes will all be held at the Fayette County Extension Office. Registration fee is $10.00 per class or $5.00 if a current
Fayette County Extension Homemaker member. The option to become an associate Homemaker member is available on the
registration form. Membership benefits include class discounts, newsletter and relevant consumer information.
Thursday, August 25: Pasta, Homemade Please – Lesme Romero, Lexington Pasta, prepares all types of
pasta every day for customers. Share in this unique opportunity as Lesme shares his simple recipe and cutting
techniques. Be the judge by sampling fresh pasta topped with freshly
prepared Primavera Sauce. 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, September 20: Beans: New Ideas for an Old Staple - Recent health recommendations encourage
eating less meat, but many people are concerned about getting enough protein. Beans, lentils and other legumes
are great sources of protein, as well as fiber and vitamins. Learn how to cook different varieties of beans, ways
to add to your existing recipes and new main dishes. Doraine Bailey is a home cook, vegetarian for over 30
years and WOW Homemaker Club President. 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, October 27: Gratins & Casseroles - Nothing says warmth and comfort like creamy gratins and
casseroles fresh out of the oven. These satisfying dishes are perfect for entertaining or family meals. FCS
Agent, Diana Doggett, shares easy to assemble ahead of time recipes. 6:00 p.m.

Food Preservation Classes ~ 2016
Food preservation continues to be more and more popular as consumers continue to seek out new interests
or simply wish to maintain more control over the foods they eat. Check out the class opportunities that are
available through the Fayette County Extension Family and Consumer Sciences program. All classes will all be
held at the Fayette County Extension Office, 1140 Red Mile Place. Pre-registration is required and some
classes have a limited group size. Completion of the 2015 or 2016 Basic Food Preservation class is
required prior to enrolling in any Hands-On Food Preservation class listed below. Sign up early to
reserve your spot!
Hands-On Food Preservation Classes (Basic Food Preservation Class required)
Registration fee is $15.00 per class or $10.00 if a current Fayette County Extension Homemaker member. The
option to become an associate Homemaker member is available on the registration form. Membership
benefits include other class discounts, newsletter and relevant consumer information.
