There is so much that we can all receive to enhance our lives from the beauty that is captured in the variety forms of art. Now semi-retired, I was asked by a friend to participate in the "Celebrate Art! Celebrate Coffee! celebration a couple of years ago and I was totally impressed with this wonderful group of dedicated individuals to the arts in our community. Hopefully, as a member of the Willmar Area Arts Council I will be able to give back to my community in some small way in helping in the promotion of the arts in our area. David Korsmo I am recently retired from Ridgewater College after teaching sales and marketing for the past thirty-four years. I’ve always had a strong interest and appreciation for the arts, both visual and performing. Currently I spend many of my days making pottery at the Pottery Workshop in New London. I’ve found it to be wonderful way to relax and enjoy seeing the results of my efforts at the end of the day. Bonnie Smith I have always been interested in art and after retiring four years ago I decided to become more involved in the arts and with art groups both locally and statewide. I believe that the arts are "food for the soul" and that the arts enrich our lives and add beauty to our world. I agreed to serve on the board so that I could assist the Willmar Area Arts Council in offering more opportunities to those interested in art regardless of their skill level or area of interest. Sandy Seydel I am a retired Willmar Kindergarten teacher. I was a kindergarten gradelevel representative and co-chair on the district art curriculum committee during my Willmar teaching years. I was very involved in the organization and planning of Lincoln Elementary Artrageous Day events. I helped plan several artist-in-residence visits. I view being on the WAAC Board as Art in the Schools representative as an opportunity to promote art experiences in our schools and expand my involvement in the art community. Willmar, MN 56201 320-235-9500 My Fair Lady Book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, Music by Frederick Loewe A musical based upon the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw April 10-13, 17-20, 24-27 Thu- Sat 7:30pm, Sunday 2:30 pm matinee My Fair Lady tells the story o the over-confident Professor Higgins and his experiment that attempts to transform a cockney girl, Eliza, into a proper-speaking lady. Higgins and his friend Colonel Pickering make great progress with the girl and even take her to the horse races and a grand ball. Nevertheless, they still treat Eliza as a mere experiment and not as a human being. When Eliza runs away, Higgins realizes that she is more than just and experiment; indeed he is in love with the girl. MY FAIR LADY played for 2,717 performances on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger, Broadhurst and Broadway Theatres starring Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews, Stanley Holloway and Robert Coote. It was the longest running musical at the time. It played for 2,281 performances in London at the Drury Lane Theatre. It was revived on Broadway in 1976 for 377 performances, in 1981 for 181 performances, and most recently in 1993 for 165 performances at the Virginia Theatre starring Richard Chamberlain as Professor Henry Higgins. This popular Broadway musical is the creation of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe that was adapted from Geroge Bernard Shaw's play and Gabrial Pascal's movie PYGMALION then later made into the popular movie musical with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. The Barn Theatre has been serving the southwestern Minnesota community since 1964 with top quality comedies and musicals. -7ARTspark FAITH PARTNERSTHE AMERICAN COMPOSERS FORUM Dr. Anne Carol Kilstofte, a Minneapolis/St. Paul area composer and educator (now living in Arizona), has been spending time in Willmar lately. Dr. Kilstofte is the resident composer working with Vinje Lutheran and St. Mary’s Catholic Churches through the Faith Partners program of the American Composers Forum. Faith Partners is funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation. Faith Partners goal is to place composers in consortia of faithbased communities to reinvigorate the creation of sacred music in religious settings. The composer creates several new works for the individual congregations as well as some shared by the entire consortium. The American Composers Forum launched Faith Partners in 1992 in the Page 7 7 Upper Midwest and has continued to expand it scope since then. Dr. Kilstofte was chosen by the Willmar churches because of the accessibility of her compositions, creativity, text-writing, and willingness to work with our faith communities. Anne has had a tremendous amount of experience working with churches. Anne stated in her application “I feel part of my role, as a composer, is to help people of all ages to understand what music is about and what new music can be for them, especially with their input. Then they can become excited by the prospect of being part of something written with them-and I truly mean with them not just for them.” The first premiere was held on Thanksgiving Eve 2007 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Children’s Choirs performing “With Thanks in Your Heart” composed for two voices, viola, flute, and keyboard. Anne spent time with the Children’s Choir as they prepared for the premiere and the children were given an opportunity to ask questions. They had numerous questions for her! This piece was also sung as a prelude before the Midnight Mass for Christmas Eve by the Women of the Adult Choir. The next premiere will be Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday at the Church of St. Mary. This will be a composition for brass, organ, choir, and congregation and will be an arrangement of “Jesus is Risen” or LASST UNS ERFREUEN. Our third premiere will occur on the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ-May 25th during our weekend liturgies. This will be a congregational hymn to be used during our communion procession. Anne has spent time with the Adult Choir and handbell choirs at St. Mary’s and also has had the opportunity to present an Adult Enrichment session about music, attend our parish appreciation program, and attending our Mardi Gras Foundation Gala. Ann Kilstofte came to Vinje Church in December and met all of the musicians and listened to all the groups rehearse. She returned again on Feb. 3 to attend both church services and introduce herself to the congregation. These connections with Vinje Church are an important part of Anne’s composition process. With the Vinje Lutheran Church Music Committee it was decided that three of her compositions will be written for the Vinje Adult Choir and Handbells, Junior and Senior High Youth Choirs with Tapestry Singers, and the Joyful Kids Elementary Choir. Anne will also compose an arrangement that will include all of these musicians plus instruments including flute, violin, piano, organ, and trumpet. The Biblical texts for the compositions center on the gift of music and praising God. These texts are very appropriate as all of these compositions will be performed at Vinje’s Choir Appreciation Sunday on May 4, 2008, at both the 8:30 and 10:45a.m. services. The public is welcome to attend and share in this wonderful experience. 7 ARTspark HOW CAN I BECOME A MEMBER OF WAAC? Please use this form to become a new member or to renew your membership for 2008.
