The Paper OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY Montgomery County’s only locally owned independent newspaper CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA Horsing around at the 4-H Fair www.thepaper24-7.com By Leeann Doerflein [email protected] Scot Blankenship of Lebanon is excited to be expanding Friendly City Games to Crawfordsville. Blankenship and co-owner Preston Meyers opened the Crawfordsville location’s doors for business on Friday. Blankenship attended Wabash College in 1999 and 2000, so he knows the area pretty well already. “We’ve really enjoyed how friendly everyone is,” he said. “We get a lot of foot traffic.” He is looking forward to organizing demo games on various days throughout the week, a schedule of which will be posted on the store’s wall. THREE THINGS You Should Know: 1 The Montgomery County Democratic Party and Club is scheduled to meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the Crawfordsville District Public Library. 2 Governor Mike Pence has announced that Judge Robert Altice has been appointed to serve as the new Court of Appeals judge for the second district, effective September 1. Altice will fill the vacancy by Judge Ezra Friedlander, who announced his retirement effective August 31 after spending more than 22 years on the bench. 3 The Indiana State Department of Agriculture has announced the promotion of Tamara Neighbors to Director of Indiana FFA Programs and the hiring of Robert Hays as the Assistant Director of Indiana FFA Programs. Neighbors is a graduate from Purdue University with a degree in Agricultural Education. Hays is a graduate from Purdue University and is currently working toward his Master of Science in Education at Purdue. Montgomery County’s finest young equestrians showed off their horses and their skills at showmanship at Montgomery County 4-H Fair’s English Horse and Pony Show Friday morning. Eron Owens was the English show judge, she is a trainer and a dressage rider who shows around the country. As a former 4-Her, she judges county fair horse shows every chance she gets a chance with her busy schedule. Owens said some of the classes are all about the horse’s looks: which horse can move the best, trot the best, which horse would be the smoothest ride. The judge also looks at characteristics of equine femininity or masculinity depending on which gender category is being judged. “The handler could stand on their head, it will still be about how the horse looks,” Owens said. “The handler’s job is to show that as best as possible, but the judge’s job is to look past that (the handler).” Mini horses came out first at the show. The host was Marilyn Lewis. There were 11 members and one guest, Sherry Byrd, present. Member Judy Tulley introduced guest speaker Carolyn Snyder who is a retired nurse. She told the club about the Mary Ludwig Free Clinic located at 816 Mill Street. The clinic was originally opened for administering children’s immunizations and then medical treatment. It was known as the Christian Nursing Service. It has serviced all county school systems and expanded to help adults also who can't pay for medical treatment and/or have not insurance coverage. There are two paid employees but all others are volunteers. Everyone from doctors, nurses, dentists, hygienists and assistants and other non-medical people freely donate hours of service to the project. Money for the structure of the clinic was finally matched with medical services to meet the needs of care. Persons wanting treatment must fill out an application, must be a resident of the county for at least six months and must have an income that is at or below 200 percent of the poverty level. Snyder also explained HIP which stands for Healthy Indiana Plan. She invited members to volunteer if possible at the clinic. President Peggy Dixon then officially opened the meeting with flag salutes and the creed. Pat Hall gave the words of inspiration by reciting the poem "Take Time.” The song of the month was "Let the Sunshine In" with the words being a bit sketchy at times. But after couple of tries, members say it sounded pretty good. The roll call question – where would I like to travel – was answered by various places such as Hawaii, Australia, Alaska, California, Pennsylvania, Switzerland and China. Many stated they really were content to just be at home. Treasurer's and Secretary's reports were read and approved. Health and safety leader Mary Jo Harmon reminded all to watch out for mosquitoes and be careful driving through high water. She also reminded members of other healthy habits. Dixon went through committee reports and also asked for sign-ups for meetings for open months. Members were reminded of the dates they were to work at the fair. Having secret pals this year was discussed and was voted to have them. $15 was set for the pal's birthday present and $15 was to be for the reveal day. Reminder was given to all to fill out the paperwork from the Purdue Extension Office for those who would be working with children. The meeting was closed with the club prayer. Angel food cake and fruit were served. Each member received a fragrant hand soap dispenser as a favor. (Below) Ellanor Boehning and her horse Phantom Spanish Pants took home reserve in under 56 inch category. the Willows, the horse also netted a 1st place in the Miniature Horse Mare 34-38 inches category. Reserve Grand Champion for mini horse went to Olivia Bratcher and her gelding, BHR Lana’s Lad. Cooper said it was rewarding and exciting to win Grand Champion. “It’s really exciting to win. Especially because she’s new and I haven’t had much time with her yet,” Cooper said. For the English Pony under 56 inches category, Olivia Bratcher and Miss Majestic Lady took home Grand Champion, and Ellanor Boehning and Phantom Spanish Pants took home Reserve. In the English Mare over 56 inches category Makhalea Young and Anty Up took home Grand Champion, while Beth Bielecki and Persuade Me won Reserve. Bielecki is a 10-year member of both Montgomery County 4-H and the Horse and Pony Club. She said she is excited that Persuade Me won. Bielecki said the toughest thing about taking care of the mare is keeping her mostly white coat clean. Bielecki, as 10-year member, was recognized at the start of the show. She offered some words of advice to young members of the club. “Do everything with passion, be persistent,” Bielecki said. “Life and horses will knock you down – sometimes more literally than others – but it’s important to keep going.” Grand Champion English Gelding over 56 inches went to Autumn Duffy and CHF Jackson Hotrod, and Reserve for that category went to Sidney Veatch and Boston Blazing Son. Happy Family Banquet Grand Champion English Draft Horse went to Young and Black Gate Prince Michael. Best English Animal went to Young and Anty Up, the pair also won Grand Champion for English Mare over 56 inches. Young said Anty Up, who is called Annie for short, is a great horse and a hard worker. Young shows Annie in shows across Indiana and said that this win will help her have a leg up other shows in the future. Young said she won with Annie two years ago. “It’s exciting because this adds to the horse’s build,” Young said. Owens said, when it comes to showmanship, the judge looks at the handler. Showmanship is where the 4-Hers get to show off their skills in horse handling and the hard work they put in with their horses all year round. “Showmanship is solely based on how well the horse is trained to be handled on the ground and to set up for inspection,” Owens said. “The handler has to look professional and confident.” Owens let the crowd know that showmanship was close in all three categories, but she ultimately selected Chelsea Veatch for the junior level, Sidney Veatch for the intermediate level, and Olivia Bratcher for the senior level. Winners from Friday will go to compete with winners from the Western competition today to determine who is the best showman overall. The English show ended with placings in walk-trot, hunter hack, dressage and other equestrian pursuits. Photo provided Wabash Landing turned out to be a fun alternative to Inspire’s zoo trip, which was cancelled due to rain. MCCF issues grant to YSB The Paper Even the best programs cannot be effective if participants cannot get to them. The Youth Service Bureau’s Inspire program is a group mentoring program serving adjudicated pre-teen and teen girls (girls who have committed a delinquent offense), as well as girls who are identified as at-risk of delinquency. It serves girls county-wide, which presents transportation obstacles. By providing transportation, they were able to increase the average attendance from eight girls to 15 girls, but it is costly. Montgomery County Com- munity Foundation board member Tony Cosenza became aware of the issue and directed a Community Engagement Grant of $1,000 to YSB so that they can contract transportation, at least one way, for the girls who need it. Cosenza understands how valuable the program is for the girls in terms of the structure, guidance, and the mentoring it offers. By increasing access to the programming, YSB can increase their reach and impact. Inspire meets every other week. Each meeting includes a lesson, crafts, healthy snacks and a brief introduction to the mento- ring group’s organization and mission. Inspire also expands upon the girls’ cultural experiences by taking monthly fieldtrips. In addition to YSB staff, mentors include service-minded women from area organizations such as League of Women Voters, Business and Professional Women and MCCF’s Women’s Legacy members. A recent field trip was planned for Columbian Park Zoo and Tropicanoe Water Park, but weather forced “plan B.” Instead, they went to Wabash Landing where the girls went to Starbucks, ate ba- gels from Panera, visited the fountain at the walking bridge and then went to see the movie, “Inside Out.” To learn more about YSB and the programming offered or about volunteer opportunities, visit their website at www.mcysb. org or call 362-0694. Montgomery County Community Foundation has awarded more than $16 million in grants and scholarships here in Montgomery County since it was founded in 1991. Kennedy Boehning, an eighth grader, is one of the oldest girls in the junior division, with five years of experience. She starts her process by checking out what’s trendy in stores, because she said that is part of the judge’s consideration. She looks out for things like popular colors and styles that stand out for summer and back-toschool fashion. Boehning chose to make a blue jean sleeveless shirt dress with an orange shirt underneath. Rylie Koopman, a fifth grader, said it can be hard to figure what to make because there are so many options, but she ultimately decided to make a flowy sun dress. The dress she made is mint with an on trend asymmetrical hem and tribal accents. Boehning said that sewing is the harder part of the project, but Koopman said she thinks getting in front of the judges is more difficult. “I get so nervous, sometimes I start fidgeting,” Koopman said. The Paper photo by Lori Poteet Swimmers from the Sugar Creek Swim Club have made strong showings at tournaments in the past, like the 2014 Indiana Swimming Summer Divisional Championships. Sugar Creek Swim Club to compete in championship By Maria Leichty [email protected] The Sugar Creek Swim Club has two meets left in the season. And they are big ones. The Indiana Swimming Age Group State Championships are next weekend and the Indiana Swimming Summer Divisionals Championships are the following weekend, Aug. 1-2. Swimmers have to get the divisional or state cuts in order to participate in the meets. The SCSC has been busy this summer. Since the end of school, the club has been to six different meets and got at least one new age group divisional or state cut each time. SCSC swimmers achieved cuts for 91 different divisional events and 13 different state events. The following swimmers will be performing events at divisional: Ashton Albaugh (1 event), Colt O-Brien (1 event), Thristan Callejas (2 events), Patciance Dean (2 events), Conner Franke (1 event), Hanna Hayden Kid’s club soccer ready for kickoff By Maria Leichty [email protected] Montgomery County United Soccer Club is about to kick off its fourth season, two years and three seasons after it began. Fall season sees fewer older kids and a few more younger as middle and high school seasons are in full swing. Four teams will be forming, two 12 and under and two 10 and under teams. Signups will be open until July 31. To register, either pick up a registration form at the Boys & Girls Club of Montgomery County (1001 Whitlock Ave.) or contact Coach Horton at [email protected]. Wabash psychology professor Robert Horton helped start the club and will be coaching both 12 and under teams. “What we really want is to expand the demographic diversity of the club,” Horton said. “Also, we want to give the kids a fun developmental experience.” He started the club to give the county more options for soccer clubs between the recreational phase and the school teams. “I liked for the kids in Crawfordsville to be introduced into the competitive experience,” he added. “There was previously no mechanism in Montgomery County where kids could really develop their skills.” MCUSC has played various teams from Ben Davis to Avon to Speedway. There are three divisions within the club: recreational, recreational plus and travel. Recreational only plays home games at the Boys & Girls Club twice a week for four weeks. Recreational plus has no tryouts but is a competitive travel team. They practice twice a week and play at least 10 games with an end-of-season tournament. Travel is the most competitive and conducts tryouts. They will have tryouts on Aug. 4 and Aug. 6 at the Boys & Girls Club. These tryouts are for 12 and under and will determine which 12 and under team the kids will play on. The travel team is associated with the Indiana Soccer League. The team placed second in their division this past spring. Along with Horton, there will be two other coaches for the 10 and under teams: Jim Gray and Keith Mason. The club requires their coaches to have a National F license from the United States Soccer Federation. Coach Horton started playing soccer at the age of five and continued on to play for the University of Richmond. Horton coached the junior varsity team and was the assistant coach for varsity at Wabash for three years. In addition to this, he coached the micro-soccer league at the Boys & Girls Club for ten years. “Kids play soccer because it is fun,” Horton said. “They are happy, they love to learn and they get excited when they play. I’ve always loved soccer and getting to pass that along to youngsters is joyful.” Horton will continue passing his skills along at the first week of practice in the first week of August. Their first games will be on Aug. 15. (1 event), Aidan Hendrickson (2 events), Isabelle Hendrickson (3 events), Marshall Horton (6 events), Whitman Horton (2 events), Juan Huesca (2 events), Dalton Humphry (4 events), Emily Humphry (2 events), Noah Johns (2 events), Stephanie Lynch (1 event), Sam Malott (3 events), Aidan Mason (5 events), Campbell Mason (2 events), Makayla McMains (1 events), Lillia Mitchel (1 event), Hayley Niemann (2 events), Lauren Odle (5 events), Jacob Pruett (6 events), Jane Scheilder (1 event), Megan Scheilder (4 events), Emma Tyler (2 events), Madison Wickholm (4 events), Grant Whittsett (2 events), Sophia Whitsett (1 event), Aubrey Williams (2 events) Paige Wright (9 events), Owen Zimmerman (4 events) The following swimmers will be performing events at age group state: Ashton Albaugh (1 event), Isabella Hendrick- son (2 events), Makayla McMains (3 events), Whitman Horton (6 events), Sophia Whitsett (1 event) Rocky Ridge flooded again! The Paper photos by Lori Poteet (Top) Rocky Ridge Golf Club is under water. Rain from the past weeks makes it easier for the course to flood. (Above) From the looks of it, Rocky Ridge might be offering rafting sometime soon. Weekend Edition, July 18-19, 2015 A6 The Paper of Montgomery County Storms, heavy rain create driving hazards The Paper photo by Lori Poteet The significant rainfall and thunderstorms that have hit Montgomery County recently can decrease visibility, create hydroplaning hazards and making driving even the shortest distances more dangerous. This wreck occurred Friday afternoon during a break in the heavy downpours on County Road 625 East near Rocky Ridge Golf Course. No fair-weather cows at this year’s 4-H The Paper photo by Lori Poteet (Above left) Beth Scott earned Overall Supreme Dairy honors for her big Guernsey dairy cow at the 4-H Fair’s dairy show Friday evening. (Above right) Hailey Rescigno did not care how much it was raining at the fair – she was bound to have a good time. (Right) Heavy storms threatened to flood the show’s venue, but Levi Stephens, age 6, and others were more than happy to help sweep water away from the arena during the dairy show.
