of its kind in the USA.

In this unique collaboration, the
Texas Chapter of ASID [American Society of Interior
Designers], the Texas / Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA
[International Interior Design Association], and the
Dallas / Fort Worth Chapter of IFMA [International
Facility Management Association] come together
to provide their collective memberships – whether
professional, associate, industry, or student – with
valuable tools to enhance their respective roles.
A diverse array of 233 Exhibitors filled just at 403
booths, introducing the region’s booming design
community to the latest and greatest in cutting-edge
products and services. Exhibitors catered to the
corporate, residential, hospitality, healthcare, institutional, and education design fields. To access photos
from the show, as well the list of 2007 Exhibitors,
visit the Press page of the official METROCON website,

Please congratulate the ASID Industry Partners
who won METROCON07 Pegasus Exhibitor Awards!

Along with the outstanding
tradeshow, METROCON offered attendees 39 continuing education classes
ranging from Project Management to
Sustainable Design to Accessibility
to Interior Design Legislation. Rounding
out the classes was a keynote address
by James Weiner, AIA of Collaborative
Project Consulting titled “Finding the
Source.”
A team of tremendous volunteers from the professional associations executes METROCON. For five
years, the organizations have organized the conference as a service to their members. Income from the
event goes back to the chapters to fund special educational and recognition programs, as well as foundations, scholarships and charities earmarked by the
individual organizations. The 2007 Committee
was pleased to distribute just over $33,000 to each
of the three organizations. As a collective charitable
gesture, this year the METROCON Committee again
offered attendees the opportunity to turn in their
unused Thursday Night Happy Hour drink tickets,
which resulted in a $425 donation to the American
Cancer Society.

DESIGN INTERACTIVE
ASID Student Career Days 07
Fri., October 26 & Sat., October 27, 2007
This year’s Student Career Day began on Friday, October 26, 2007 in conjunction with
the Decorative Center Dallas “Celebration of Design.” This was our second year in collaboration with DCD in which we introduced our design students from across Texas, Oklahoma
and New Mexico to an innovative and creative connection with professional designers.
ASID held our Friday Design Interactive, Part 1 at the McGannon Showroom. Professionals
who have taken various career paths in the Interior Design industry gave presentations
discussing the realities of their interior design fields and revealed how they interact with their
clients. Speakers were Emily Gibson ASID, Allison Gimpel Allied Member ASID, Carol
Holley ASID and Karen Kroh ASID.
After the presentation, buses were provided to transport the attendees to SMU for a tour of the new Embrey
Engineering Building which is on the verge of LEED
Certification and was designed as a model for sustainability for college campuses. “Speed Dating” with design
professionals gave students opportunities to gain new
perspectives by engaging in short informal question
and answer with the professional speakers from the
earlier program as they rotated around the Atrium space
and enjoyed appetizers.
LEED tour at SMU Embrey Building
A guided tour of the Embrey building and information on LEED was conducted by Michael Paul, MSFM, CEM, CIAQ, LEED AP the Director
of Energy Management and Engineering for SMU. Students and Designers enjoyed asking
Michael questions about products, LEED, construction and many other design related issues.
Thank you to Emily Gibson ASID, Allison Gimpel Allied Member ASID, Meghan
Broussard Simecek Student Rep to the Texas Chapter Board and Mary Stelter ASID,
along with our speakers, sponsors and the McGannon Showroom for putting this day in motion
and making it all happen.
This year for the first time, ASID expanded the Student Day events for a Design Interactive,
Part 2. This additional day was developed by ASID in response to student requests for more
interaction with the design professionals. Held at Capital Distributing, an ASID Industry Partner
showroom, who also generously provided a breakfast buffet to start off the day for the attending
students, educators and designers.
The first session was Round Table discussions centered on the various aspects of getting
that first job and internship with the topics of Resumes, Portfolios and Interviews. Students
that were able to bring samples of their work were reviewed by the professionals.
The second session was Part 2 of ‘Speed Dating’ in which the students could ask any
questions they wanted about the designer’s own practices, about any aspect of the interior
design industry or questions for clarification from the previous day’s events. The designers
shared some of their experiences with current projects, client relations, scheduling and budget
issues with real life examples of the challenges and fun of our profession. This gave the students
a valuable experience to look beyond the
classroom and to have a better realization
of the inner workings of the designer, the
client and the industry.

Texas Tech students experience an
exciting day of design trends and
ideas during the 2007 annual Design
Expo and Learning Lunch
The October event began with a Learning Lunch, sponsored by BentleyPrince Street. Steve Patterson shared a presentation with students about
green design; and Kari from Antron shared the color forecast for 2008.
Following the lunch, forty one vendors shared their products. All
Interior Designer students were invited to participate in the event. Those in
attendance received samples and brochures.
According to Ann-Claire Breitling, President of the ASID. Student Chapter,
this event is one of the highlights for Interior Design students. “Expo is an
excellent tool for students to interact with industry professionals. We begin
to establish relationships, explore a variety of career paths and learn about
industry trends, such as green products.”
Expo Chairman, Dana Hansen, expresses appreciation to all the vendors
for their part in providing this rich experience for Interior Design students.
We look forward to seeing everyone next year!

Are you talking to me….???
By Helen Erdman, ASID
Am I talking to YOU?
Yep, yessir-ee, you betcha, absolutely, definitely, right on—but what,
exactly, is it that I am talking to you about?????
The ROSTER….of course, the dreaded Roster. We will be going to print
soon and are always hoping and praying that everyone has notified the office
(Pat Gallagher [email protected], or Helen Erdman [email protected])
if there have been ANY changes to your personal or business information.
Did you hear THAT Laura McDonald STEWART? What about YOU
Sandra Taylor…it’s about your email address. Or perhaps Christie Schlosser
and Lisa Barron—have you let everyone know you passed the “Q” and can
now use the coveted ASID appellation?
I know a few of you have moved---sound familiar Kim Armstrong? Or have
changed emails –Cheryl Rowe---or have moved to different offices---Scott
Frelick???
But for all the rest of you members and IP’s alike that I do not have access
to, what is your status??? ON occasion we do have typos, but have corrected
all that have been reported to us. Corrections and additions are posted in
the Design Texas newsletter every issue for you to clip and paste the old fashioned way.
And for all of you out there in Texas-land that I cannot personally phone
or visit (unless of course the Chapter thinks I NEED to travel to San Antonio
and Austin, and Corpus Christi, or El Paso….I will, I will) please email or fax
new information to us.
Your Roster is only as good as the information we currently have---so, if
you are still reading this---I am still talking …to…you.

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS: The regional chairs have been eliminated. It was a great idea and was implemented
for two years. In the end, it was felt that this extra layer hindered communication when the objective was to increase
communication. Now the design community chairs are to attend all board meetings. Your ideas and concerns are
greatly appreciated. Just communicate with your design community chair as he or she will be the link that can truly
affect change and growth.

ASID Christmas Winner Gets Plastered - Finally
A local Frisco
company called
Skanadario an ASID
Industry Partner won
an Italian wall finish
from Faux Real at
last years ASID
Christmas party in
Dallas.
Owner Jeffrey
Goodman really
didn’t know what to
do with his valuable
prize. He sells high
end plumbing and
home fixtures to the
trade and most of
his wall space is
taken up for product.
With a suggestion
from ASID Cindi Cagle he chose the
perfect place. Their new sitting area and
coffee bar.
The plaster chosen for this job by
owner/applicator Steve Olvera was Stucco
Romano, an authentic Italian plaster. BiColore Metallo is topping off the plaster

to give it a border from the rest of the wall and to line it up with the display
on the right. It is a polished plaster so at the right angle you can see reflections bouncing off the wall and a smooth marble feel when you touch it. Both
plasters used are mined and made in Italy and processed in Verona.
Jeffrey Goodman said, “It really adds some character to that area and I’m
sure we will enjoy it as much as our customers will when they sit for some
refreshing coffee.”
About Faux Real

Serendipity Offers a “New” Soft Traditional Look
What’s on the horizon in home décor? The current trend is toward a “new”
traditional look that’s cleaner and simpler, with a fresh color palette. This
style emerges in “Serendipity,” the newest collections of wallpaper, printed
and woven fabrics from Thibaut. Serendipity is a surprising and delightful
ensemble of traditional English style designs with a lighthearted feel. Delicate
touches of watercolor, embroidery, and texture give the patterns a clean,
stylish look.
“Shrewsbury,” a traditional Jacobean pattern inspired by an antique document, has been re-created with a playful, casual watercolor technique. The
design is featured on a crisp yellow background with accents of raspberry,
aqua, white and grass green, and appears on a linen and cotton blend
fabric that has a textured appearance. “Brunswick,” also based on an historic
Provencal pattern, is a stippled paisley leaf design rejuvenated with lighter
pinks, yellows and blues.
“Bridgewater Damask,” a bold medallion pattern, has a soft stripe with an
opaque overprint that takes on a Swedish
look with its simple yet elegant features.
The damask comes in gentle shades of
sky blue, yellow and aqua as well as a
chic combination of metallic on teal.
The fabric is printed on a heavy cotton
basketweave that helps give the design
extra texture. With a more whimsical
approach, birds and birdcages take center
stage in “Tweety,” an imaginative
decoupage of cut pieces from aged bonds.
Festive, saturated colors appear on a
luscious tangerine background, as well
as a deep pool blue ground.
“Lavender,” a modern take on the
traditional floral, features tossed sprigs
of lavender and stylized outlines of blue
bells, harmoniously arranged in an open
layout. In “Westfield,” watercolored
leaves, flowers, and strawberries take
on a fanciful, exotic look. Tiny dragonflies, bees, butterflies, and ladybugs
flutter amid the vines. “Providence,” a
re-creation of an Art Nuevo document,
presents abstract flowers, animals, birdcages and birds in a fantasy garden.
The design has simple, broad strokes of color, vibrant accents and subtle
shadows, and appears on grass green, raspberry, and chocolate grounds.
Vining flowers with embroidered detail unfurl and stretch upward in
“Mendham.” The design has clean lines and simplistic shapes. “Queen Anne’s
Lace,” a more delicate pattern, has sprigs of countryside wildflowers illustrated in a hand-embroidered fashion.
Printed and woven companion fabrics complimenting the above designs
can be found in Thibaut’s “Serendipity” Prints and Woven Collections. These
and other Thibaut collections are available through interior designers and
fine decorating stores. Visit www.thibautdesign.com to see patterns and
room shots, and to obtain the names of local dealers. You can also call (800)

News from
TAID
Letter from the TAID President
Dear Members,
When I was first trying to think of what has been happening since I last
reported to you, it seemed like all has been quiet, with little activity since
the legislative session ended in May. I realized that is not entirely true.
Already the TAID board is working on ideas and making plans for the 2009
legislative session. We will again introduce the Interior Design Practice Act.
With each legislative session we hope to be successful in our efforts. With
each session that passes, we learn more about the political ways and understand better how to work with both legislators and with opposing legislative
coalitions.
Save e
t
the Da
In our preparations for the 2009 session Donna Vining, Pat McLaughlin,
and I, along with our lobbyists, attended a Texas Board of Architectural
Examiners Legislative Summit Meeting in October. This is a new effort that
the TBAE has initiated for the three professions under their regulation (architects, landscape architects, and interior designers) to meet and discuss their
issues and legislative goals. The intent is for the professions to cooperate
with each other. In our case, we hope to be working with the representatives
for the architects to create wording for our practice act that both our professions can accept. Wouldn’t that be wonderful to not have their opposition
during the next session? It is a lofty goal, but not an impossible one.
The TBAE is still in the midst of defending the Interior Design Title Act
against the three decorators who brought a lawsuit against them and the
State of Texas. The lawsuit claims that our title act, any interior design title
act, is unconstitutional in that it inhibits the freedom of speech. Their thought
is that even if a person has not fulfilled the qualifications to be a licensed
interior designer they should still be allowed to call themselves an interior
designer, if the person performs the same services that a licensed interior
design does. The TBAE can not talk about the lawsuit, but rest assured
they and the Texas Attorney General believe in our Title Act and are definitely
defending it.
When I first became a member of the TAID board 7 years ago, I knew
nothing about politics. I could not understand many of the conversations
in our board meetings, nor did I have a good grasp of the purpose of a Practice
Act for the interior design profession. I have learned so much and now actually enjoy having the ability to converse intelligently about interior design
legislation and politics in general. I’m mentioning this because TAID needs
more designers to be actively involved. You do not have to be a whiz at politics, you just need to have a concern about preserving our profession and
elevating it to a more professional level. Please contact me if you are interested in being involved on any level, [email protected]. We will
welcome you with open arms!

SURVEY SAYS…
Make It Easier For Members
To Speak Their Minds
By Laura McDonald, ASID / IIDA
President-Elect, ASID Texas Chapter
You would think – in this world of customer reviews and mass opinion
sharing – that we would have no problem getting members to respond to our
annual Chapter survey. Well, you would be wrong.
We have – may I speak frankly here? – a downright LOUSY annual survey
return rate of about 10%. Why? Because members…
• don’t understand why the Chapter even sends out a survey in the first
place,
• don’t want to take the time to fill out a (perceived) long survey and
then have to mail / fax / email it back to the Chapter office,
• get asked the same questions over and over without seeing the results,
• don’t have sufficient room to fully answer some of the questions,
• and actually get confused by the wording of some of the questions.
As a result, we’re going to make some changes around here. Prompted
by the increased return rates and enthusiastic participation in many other
Chapters around the country, we’re going digital. Using an online survey
service, we’ll have the ease of automatic, electronic compilation. Can you
say instant gratification?
Other benefits on conducting the annual Chapter survey with an online
service include the abilities to…
• have the flexibility to ask all different sorts of questions (multiple choice,
true/false, open-ended, etc.) without the constraint of page inches,
• allow members to type (instead of hand-write) their responses for easier
reading,
• and break the survey up into smaller pieces every month, reporting the
results of the previous month’s survey when sending out the following
month’s survey while explaining to members how the information will
benefit the Chapter.
Whoever predicted that we would evolve into a paperless society by the
year 2000 was a tad bit optimistic. I don’t know about you, but my desk still
gets lost under it, and I’m always looking for a way to avoid using it. Just one
more reason to use the online survey service.
So be looking in your email Inboxes soon for Part One of the survey. We
promise that it will be brief and refreshing. Oh, and if you’ve put off updating
your email address with the ASID Texas Chapter Office ([email protected]
| 214. 748.1541), then this is a one heckuva good reason to do so. Speak up!

Austin Design Community
By Amanda Hill, ASID, Chair
During late summer and fall 2007, the ASID Austin Design Community
was busy preparing for our 22nd Annual Design Excellence Awards.
The event was held on Friday, September 19th at the Westwood Country
Club in Austin. The winners will be featured in the Winter issue of Luxe
Magazine as well as The Austin Design Guide, The Austin American
Statesman and the Texas Chapter website. We had a record sponsor
turnout, of which many are ASID Industry Partners!
We’d like to give a special thank you to our outgoing board members.
They did such an amazing job and a lot of hard work. Stephanie Wilson
was our 2006-2007 Austin Design Community Chair; Lori Anderson,
Financial Officer; Amanda Hill, Programs Chair; Maria Aponte, Communications
Chair; Chelsea Bandy, Student Liaison; Paul Davison, IP Liaison.
Our new board members are: Amanda Hill, Chair; Lori Anderson,
Financial Officer; Holly Hillis, Programs; Allison Jaffe, Student
Liaison/Communications Chair.
Our tasks for the next quarter are to organize the Christmas Party,
outline the new Austin Design Community Student Scholarship Program,
and continue the very successful Student Mentor Program.
Our 2007-2008 year is almost totally booked with monthly meetings;
every month except for June, July, and September, which will be booked
very soon! We have a CEPH planned during our monthly meetings for
October & November 2007, as well as February 2008. We would like to
offer another lighting CEPH in conjunction with one of the spring/summer
meetings. Please check in at the Texas Chapter website for the ASID
Austin calendar of events!
We’d also like to recognize our talented 2007 Design Excellence award
winners!

We are off to a running start for this next year. In October, we co-sponsored a CEPH luncheon with Sherwin Williams. We asked the local chapter
of AIA to join us and they responded enthusiastically. It turned out to
be a very informative CEPH.

Our plan is to take the months of November and December off from
meetings, since everyone is so harried at the Holidays. In January, we’ll
have an organizational meeting to set our calendars for 2008. Volunteers
will then be assigned a date for chairing meetings and topics.
An informal poll was taken, to get input from members from our whole
area. Distance between the Corpus Christi area and the Rio Grande has
always been a hurdle for our group. We do have volunteers from the
Valley looking into special vendors/resources and points of design interest
for meetings in the Valley. A special liaison will be appointed to update
all the information for our current member list.
Our tentative spring schedule includes:
• Ferguson Enterprises for the new Kohler Showroom in Corpus Christi
• Art Museum of South Texas to see the new addition to the facility
• Asian Culture Museum

El Paso Design Community

David Samaniego, showroom Manager of Ferguson Bath, Lighting and
Kitchen Gallery hosted our September 27th meeting. We enjoyed a
wonderful lunch and presentation by Jason Rogers of Viking Appliances
from Albuquerque, New Mexico. We had a great turn out with fourteen
members and four guests attending this meeting/presentation.
Jason’s presentation included the latest trends in appliances along with
helpful installation ideas and information on how Viking works with the
design and builder community.

Ferguson’s is one of only two ASID Industry Partners that we have here
in El Paso; the other being Emser tile.
Sally Dinsmoor handed out two more Industry Partner applications
in the last week and she has plans to contact more designer showrooms
and ask them to join our growing group. These Industry partners will be
invited to every one of our meetings and they are an important part of
our business here in El Paso.
On October 25, 2007 we gathered for a terrific CEPH Luncheon with
Lutron and Centauri Sales of El Paso. This presentation and luncheon was
held at Café Central Restaurant in downtown El Paso.
This class is titled, “Enhance Your Designs with Lighting Controls”.
This is a new class being offered to us and it was a review of Lutron’s
controlled window shades and residential lighting controls. Michael
Ewert of Lutron traveled from Denver to make this presentation to us.
We had a lot of questions for our presenter and enjoyed a truly fabulous
lunch at one of El Paso’s best restaurants.
We had sixteen ASID members and three guests attend this wonderful
lunch meeting. We look forward to many additional enriching meetings
throughout the year.

Summer Report inadvertently omitted in the previous newsletter.
By Connie Blake, ASID, Chair
We decided to take a break from CEU's this past summer and focus on
membership. June 19th we met for lunch at the Modern Museum of Art
Cafe to welcome student members. A dozen (or so) professional and
allied members visited with almost as many students from area schools.
And, of course, we sprung for their lunch.
On July 10th we met for lunch at local favorite "Cafe Aspen". Each
of us was to bring a prospective member. Eight current members, including
two we haven't seen in a while, and a dozen visitors enjoyed a yummy
lunch and spirited conversation. We had a diverse group – young, old,
commercial, hospitality, health care, residential and even our new Hunter

group!
On July 12th the incoming and out-going board met at the Fort Worth
Club. The slate for 2007-2008 was announced;
Annie Mason ASID- Chairperson
Judith Marsee ASID- Treasurer
Macy Hill - Programs
Emily Gilmore - Communications
Trisha Troutz - Mentor Program
Stephanie Jackson -Sponsorship
Connie Blake, ASID - Past Chair
Among topics discussed was the mentor program we are launching
this fall. We are pleased to have 58 students and 30 mentors signed up
so far. On September 11th, there was a "Kick-off Party" for the students
and mentors to meet each other. Other programs for next year include
another joint event with AIA Fort Worth, and "new member" and "prospective member" luncheons. We have three young designers coming onto
the board, so activities and programs promise to be exciting.
The August meeting was Metrocon. We throughly enjoyed the CEU's
and vendor booths. It was even better than last year! I guess this is my
last report as Chair - Annie Mason will be taking the helm in September.
I'm sure she will bring enthusiasm and grace to the Fort Worth Board. I
look forward to next year's programs and events.

Wow, did we have fun at Metrocon – learned a lot and enjoyed meeting
new vendors. We all agreed the Market Hall venue was better on several
levels and the quality of classes offered keeps going up every year.
Our new community board kicked off the year with a mixer at Dorian’s,
a new(ish) furnishings boutique where several members orphaned by
Gabberts landed. We were launching our Mentor Program, teaming
students with us old wise ones. Twenty mentor teams mingled over
munchies and ogled the beautiful furniture and accessories. The Fort
Worth Business Press covered the event; some of our photos are attached.

The October meeting was a CEU presented by Sherwin Williams. See
pictures attached. Steinway Pianos hosted the meeting with valet parking,
delectable hors d’oeuvres and wine. Our Sherwin Williams rep Ashlyn
Bourque greeted us with forecast color decks. Jackie Jordan, SW Design
Marketing Manager, presented a fun and informative class on forecast
colors; how they come about and their impact on fashion and interiors.
She also described how trends are influenced by nature, and countries
from around the world, such as Brazil, Russia, India and Saudi Arabia.
Coming up is our Community Outreach Project for this year. We will
gather at the Presbyterian Night Shelter to paint children’s furniture for
auction at their December fundraiser.
November meeting plans are for another CEU (TBA). And our annual
Holiday Event is scheduled for December 11 at Amy and Randy Walton’s
gorgeous home.
The Duette® Architella™ Collection is the latest honeycomb innovation from Hunter Douglas. Featuring patented honeycomb
within a honeycomb construction, Architella shades provide
greater energy efficiency, more luminous color, more brilliant
opaques, improved pleat retention and a softer touch.

After a summer break from meetings, we kicked off a new season of
meetings in September with Paula Tiller from Fabrica International. She
gave a wonderful presentation on carpet and rug constructions and use
in design.
In October, Kelly Kelley from CPU Films gave a CEU on the different
types of window film and their benefits. It was highly educational!
Our next meeting is scheduled for November 14th at The Garlic Press
restaurant in Midland for lunch. We are excited to have Kitty Wasemiller,
ASID, IDEC as this month’s speaker. The presentation will be “Digital
Design – Using Computers to Communicate.”
Our goal is to increase participation in meetings by offering CEU’s and
bringing new speakers to discuss interesting topics. I challenge everyone
in the Odessa/Midland/San Angelo area to attend our next meeting!
