The Wardens write ….
Definitely the last interregnum
update ….
By the time you read this Martin and Louise will
already be installed in the vicarage. We are
delighted to welcome them and wish them every
happiness in their new life in Tynemouth.
Don’t forget to put Thursday 12th November at
7.30pm in your diaries for Martin’s licensing
service, followed by a faith supper in the Parish
Hall afterwards. There is a list for contributions of
food at the back of church.
We are pleased to have come to the end of the
interregnum in under a year and are very grateful
to all who have helped to keep the parish ticking
over. There has only been one service of
Evensong cancelled in eleven months due to
having no one to take it, and this is due in no
small measure to Elizabeth’s hard work in the
office, to Dorothy and Doreen’s cover for services
week in and week out, and to the many others
who have visited and helped us.
Your news & views are always
welcome, please send any
articles or news to the Parish office (2570660 or
email [email protected])
A good read….
Many years ago we admitted a young boy into our
Scout Troop. His Dad, Richard Taylor, had
recently been installed as our Vicar. That
youngster, Simon Taylor, is now Canon
Chancellor of Derby Cathedral and has written an
interesting book entitled 'How to Read the Bible
..without switching off your Brain'.
It really is fascinating and is to be thoroughly
recommended...and is obtainable at a moderate
price from Amazon!. Simon explains simply what
the Bible is for and answers some tricky
questions. Its light touch is appealing and it is
certainly a ‘good read’.
David Littlefield
Thank you to all who have helped us to bring the
parish through this period, and to hand it over to
Martin’s leadership in what we hope is good
order.

Prayer & Reflection
‘Celebrating the Saints’
The words below may help in times of reflection
during this season:
Poppies and Snowdrops
St Margaret of Scotland
A blood red symbol of the field of war,
the poppy stands and bows its head before
the wind that sweeps its petals to the skies,
until the field is black and colour dies.
Philanthropist,
Reformer of the Church
Lesser Festival – 16th November
Born in the year 1046, Margaret was the daughter of
the Anglo-Saxon royal house of England. She was
educated in Hungary, where her family lived in exile
during the reign of Danish kings in England. After the
Norman invasion in 1066, when her royal lineage was
still a threat to the new
monarchy, Margaret was
welcomed in the royal court
of Malcolm III of Scotland
and soon afterwards, in
1069 they were married.
They had a happy and
fruitful marriage where
Margaret proved to be both
a civilising and a holy
presence. She instituted many church reforms and
founded many monasteries, churches and pilgrim
hostels. She was a woman of prayer, as well as good
works, who seemed to influence for good all with
whom she came into contact. Queen Margaret died
on 16th November 1093.
The following passage from the Book of Proverbs is
th
dedicated for us to read on 16 November, the anniversary
of her death.
A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious
than jewels. She opens her hand to the poor, and
reaches out her hands to the needy. She opens her
mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is
on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her
household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband
too, and he praises her: "Many women have done
excellently, but you surpass them all." Charm is
deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears
the Lord is to be praised. Give her a share in the fruit
of her hands, and let her works praise her in the city
gates.
(Proverbs 31:10,20, 26-31)
The month of November is a specific time
when we pray for and remember the many
who gave their lives during wartime
fighting for freedom and also for those we
love but see no longer.
A frail, white symbol of a winter passed,
the snowdrop’s bud breaks through
iron ground at last and,
with bravado, lifts a fragile flower,
defiant through each icy, wintry shower.
A memory, a hope, one red, one white:
red comforts and white sings through sorrow’s night.
(Marjorie Dobson)
God
marks no ending, only new beginnings
God marks no ending, only new beginnings,
until the consummation of our lives;
God keeps no count of losses, nor of winnings:
we move through grace, the Holy Spirit thrives.
So as we go beyond this time, this setting,
rememb’ring all the laughter and the tears;
we go with God in faith, so not regretting
the moments shared, the hopes,
the dreams, the fears.
Though parted for a while, we travel onward, not
knowing what the future has in store.
This phase will close, the Spirit draws us forward,
we’ve tasted love, but God has promised more!
(Andrew Pratt)
‘But the souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God,
no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the
unwise, they did appear to die, their going looked like
a disaster, their leaving us, like annihilation; but they
are at peace.’
(Book of Wisdom 3:1-3)

Children’s Society Collecting Boxes…
November is traditionally a month for remembering
and I look forward to seeing any parishioners at our
80th Birthday Exhibition later in the month.. details
are elsewhere in this magazine.
Please return your boxes to the Parish office no
later than Sunday 20th December so that your
contributions can be sent to the Society’s London
headquarters early in January 2016. Alternatively,
you can leave our box at my home, 33 The Drive,
Tynemouth, NE30 4JP. If you have any problems
with this please contact me.
Of course Remembrance Sunday is exceptionally
important and the Group will be laying a wreath at
the annual Service to be held at the War Memorial
on the Village Green.
The Cubs have spent a Pack Holiday weekend at
our Adventure Centre at Powburn. The weather,
although autumnal, was generally kind and the busy
programme included an 'Energy' theme...testing
water wheels in the Ingram Valley, kite-flying,
archery, grass sledging etc. The ever popular bat
detector was in evidence and of course there was
an evening camp fire. Many thanks to Fiona Lydall
and her team for arranging such an action-packed
weekend.
As the boxes are processed they will be put at the
back of the church for collection.

It is always good to welcome new adults to our
Leadership team. John Sproat has now completed
his residential training at Hawkhirst, our Centre on
Kielder Water while Adam Lambert, youngest son of
Allen and Yvonne Lambert, has started to help with
the Scout Troop for which I am most grateful. He
was last seen making cup cakes at a Troop
meeting! Life is always varied in Scouting.
Many Congratulations to the Cub Pack which
recently won the annual Norah Roberts competition
based on Scouting skills such as knotting, road
signs and general badge work.
Several parishioners supported the recent Last
Night of the Proms which was organised by Don
and Meryl Charlton and members of the Scout
Active Support Unit. We all had a great night and
raised £1000 to be divided between The Alan
Shearer Foundation and Lookwide UK, the latter
which promotes Scouting with disadvantaged young
people.
We very much look forward to welcoming Rev
Martin Jacques to Tynemouth and I hope for a good
turnout at our Church Parade on Sunday 29th
November.
Christmas is just around the corner so Santa Claus
has been polishing his sleigh in readiness for his
annual tour of Tynemouth...more details next month.
Thank you for your continued support and interest.

Walks are likely to take us across fields, stiles,

The Bay Food Bank…
Founded in February 2012, The BAY Foodbank
aims to provide emergency food provision to
individuals or families experiencing a financial
crisis. This crisis happens when a family have no
money because of low income, bereavement,
benefit delay, redundancy, an unexpected bill or
illness. People can be referred by churches,
doctors, social services or other agencies.

Church Flowers…
I would like to thank everyone for your prayers
and concerns for my Great Grandson Callum who
is on the prayer list.
Many thanks to all who contributed flowers,
greenery or their labour in the Harvest
Thanksgiving. Beautiful sunshine on the Sunday
made the church look stunning and many
compliments were received.
Callum was born in Wishaw Hospital, South
Lanarkshire in June 2014 with a hole in the heart,
he has had two heart and one stomach operation,
and has been in and out of hospital; more often in
than out.
Callum suffers from CHD (Chronic Heart Disease)
the biggest child killer, taking more lives than all
childhood cancers combined, yet it is spoken
about far less. Heart conditions can be fixed but
children with CHD will never be fine, just stable
with long stays in hospital. Since Callum was born
four children have passed away I the same
hospital.
Twenty two gifts of flowers were distributed on the
Monday and gratefully received by ailing,
housebound or elderly parishioners.
There will be no flowers during Advent but plates
for contributions towards the cost of the
Christmas flowers will be in church and the parish
centre from Sunday 22nd November.

Notes from the PCC…..
At the recent meeting of the PCC the following
items were discussed.
 Fr Tony Curtis, Vicar of St Mark’s Shiremoor,
gave a presentation about the youth work
being undertaken in his parish. They have 3
groups of children aged 3-17 in church who
participate in the worship each Sunday. Work
is also undertaken with the uniformed
organisations, and the school, where there is a
programme of education run by Fr Tony. After
discussion it was decided to financially support
their work as part of our mission giving for the
year.
 The wardens said a very successful quiz had
been held, swelling the churches funds by over
£1k. The arrangements for the Institution &
Induction for Martin are well under way, and
we are looking forward to welcoming Martin &
Louise, and starting a new chapter in the life of
Holy Saviour’s parish.
 July & August had shown a surplus, but we still
have an underlying deficit of £52k
 Ian Buxton continues to oversee the
investments with Brewin Dolphin
 Diane, Julian & Elizabeth had attended a
Reform & Renewal roadshow which is looking
at financial and mission planning for the future
 There had been a meeting of Parish
Safeguarding Officers and we are pleased to
report that Holy Saviour’s is very much in line
with all the requirements.
 Health & Safety – the church policy is up to
date, as are all the risk assessments. It is
hoped to appoint a new H&S officer.
 A new processional cross in memory of Dr
Constance Fraser has been purchased.
 The damp proofing work to the north transept
would commence week beginning 26 October
Prayers for our new Diocesan
Bishop…
Bishop Frank has invited parishes, deaneries,
Advent Groups, Chaplaincies and other
gatherings where we meet for worship, prayer
and service in the diocese to arrange local events
for prayer between December 1st and December
11th this year. He said it would be good to meet to
pray for our new Diocesan Bishop, Christine
Hardman, to remember her public ministry in the
Diocese and region and to ask for God’s blessing
in the early weeks after her consecration. Also it
would be good to pray for her Inauguration
Service on December 12th in the Cathedral.
St Mary’s Monkseaton will be hosting a prayer
evening for Bishop Christine on Tuesday 8th
December @ 7 pm, please try to go along to this
service.

A monthly memory of the 6th
Tynemouth Holy Saviour’s Scout
Group to celebrate its 80th
Birthday……
This month I am grateful to include two memories
of Scouting in Tynemouth.
David Pickles followed his distinguished life as a
Scout by a varied career which included National
Service in Nairobi, running Mr Softee ice creams
in Newcastle and Senior Management with
English Electrics now Fujitsu Systems. David now
lives in Droitwich in Worcestershire where he is
involved with local wildlife organisations.
Ann Vizor is the daughter of Mrs Norah Roberts
who was Scoutmaster of the 6th during the
Second World War when male Leaders were
otherwise occupied! Norah continued to make a
lasting contribution to Scouting over many years
in many capacities and the growth and success of
local Cub Scouting, in particular, owes much to
this splendid lady who lived in Percy Park before
her death in 1966.Ann now lives in Dymock in
Gloucestershire.
I am indebted to David and Ann for their
respective Memories which I am sure will be of
interest.
David Littlefield
Memories of the 6th
Having jotted down a page of “memories” then
came the reflection. What I was remembering
was not the core of scouting activities per se –
badge work, games, the practicalities of camping
etc. – but the companionship. The things we did
together and the excellent grounding for life
provided by the Scouting creed.
Moving with the family to Tynemouth in early
1947 at age 11, it was with great good luck that
across the road lived Bill Adams, then
Scoutmaster of the 6th Tynemouth. The Troop at
that time was based at the TA site in Tynemouth.
As far as I remember we were there until moving
into a spacious loft above garages behind the
Grand Hotel, very handy for the beach. Playing
football on both soft and hard sand did wonders
for the development of leg strength and balance!
I enjoyed all aspects of Scouting - must have
done, as I progressed though the Scouts, Seniors
and Rovers until the chucking-out age (as it was
then) of 24. Other activities took place in the
Parish Hall and no doubt still do. Collecting for the
Jumble sales comes to mind, not to mention later
on taking part in the well-supported Whist Drives.
Gosforth Park was a very handy venue, near
enough to trek up there pulling the cart with all the
gear on. There was plenty of room for camping
with space between troops; sometimes we slept
in the hut. It was also something of a nature
reserve, which I loved, seeing my first Sedge
Warbler there. Very interested in birds, I wrote a
regular feature for the 6th Column, cribbing from
the Observers Book of British Birds to fill in gaps
of my own knowledge!
I was in the Heron Patrol, led by Alan Jessop.
“Highlights” were camping in the Lake District,
where we walked down a fern covered hillside,
Alan in the lead, me at the back and disturbed a
wasps nest. I think the count was 13 stings and I
was all ready to jump into the stream at the
bottom of the hill before Alan stopped me and
brushed the wasps off my legs. Camping near
Housesteads on the Roman Wall and yomping
with heavy packs from Haltwhistle. Hiking with the
Patrol where the venue was always “just round
the next bend/over the next hill” and being
prodded in the back by Alan’s staff to keep me
going! Disturbing another wasps nest but being
wiser, moved quickly and only three stings this
time!! It was the period of the Ralph Reader led
Gang Shows. My appearance was short lived,
being challenged in the voice projection
department but overall an enjoyable experience
and life-enhancing for everyone involved.
Alan and I were together at Raby Castle to
receive our Queen’s Scout badges from Lord
Rowallen. I always claimed we were among the
last of the King’s Scouts and first of the Queen’s,
as King George 6th died between qualifying and
attending the St George’s day parade at Windsor
Castle, where the new Queen and Princess
Margaret took the parade in mourning garb.
I remember visiting the Houses of Parliament with
the Scouts, hosted by Rupert Spiers, the MP for
Hexham and staying on board “Discovery” (now
moored at Dundee) and climbing up into the
Crow’s Nest.
My period in the Seniors passed uneventfully,
under the stewardship of Billy Mills, with the
companionship of Alan, Ian Whateley, George
(Duster) Duckett , Ken Wood and others. Lively
political discussions were held and record choices
introduced and argued over ( including my first
introduction to Wagner’s Overture to
”Tannhauser”)!
Time in the Rovers was more eventful. Our
meetings were on a Sunday morning at our hut
on the Spanish Battery site. Very handy for the
Front Street pub for a couple of pints afterwards
and arriving home late to find Sunday lunch in the
oven. Great until the hut mysteriously burnt down
putting an end to that. I remember our Xmas
dinners at the Bay Hotel (now flats) in
Cullercoats, which usually ended in a sing-song.
“High Noon” is still the only song of which I can
remember all of the words!
I’ve probably forgotten more names than I
remember but the Adams brothers come to mind,
Geoff Scarth, Gordon Lee, Alan Smythe, Alan
Baxter, Gordon Dodds, Frankie Fenwick, Duncan
and Harvey Gamble, Johnny Urwin, Alan “Ally”
Armstrong, Dick Reece, Peter Wright, Harry
Joyce, Jim Tombling and I must include Doug
Brennan who has been a stalwart for many years
and has kept me in touch every Xmas. Great
lads, some sadly no longer with us but many
happy memories.

80 Years of Scouting in Tynemouth
I was delighted to be given the opportunity to offer
my congratulations to the "6th" as they celebrate
80years of continuous Scouting in Tynemouth,
and although my contribution was limited to
helping the Cubs, under the tutelage of the
indomitable Lily Thompson, for a few years, some
of you will remember my mother, Norah Roberts,
who was committed to Scouting for many years,
ever since she came to the North East.
I only discovered after she died, what a brave and
modest woman my mother was, because she
never boasted (or talked much) about the things
she did. I found press cuttings for instance,
telling of when she received her degree in
Architecture, and was the first woman to qualify
as such in the country. Although I knew she had
been to Liverpool University in the 1920's , and
would occasionally talk about absent minded
professors, she never told me of her
achievement, though she encouraged (and I think
expected ) me to go to University.
During the war, she acted as probably one of the
first female Scoutmasters, because of course,
most of the men had been called up, and there
was no one available to keep the Scout troops
going. She was appointed ADC cubs and used to
visit the various Cub Packs on a regular basis,
and I remember various , probably nervous,
Cubs coming to the house, to talk about their
"collections" in order to pass their Collectors'
badge" She also used to read the Scout 1st
Class Hike reports, with great interest, and
understanding of the sometimes difficult
conditions, as she had hiked in the Alps in the
1930's.
One of her inspired ideas was to organise a
District Cub camp at Wall in the early 1960s, so
the boys would realise they were part of a bigger
organisation than just their own Pack. When I
moved to near Stratford on Avon, I helped with a
Pack , and thought it would be a good idea to
follow her example, and promptly realised how
much work was involved! She was a great
believer in "proper" food, and so she made, what
could only be described as a cauldron of "good
soup" as part of the boys supper, for when they
arrived, probably on the back of lorries , piled with
kit. (H & S?) The crisis came when she
remembered that in those days the Catholics did
not eat meat on Fridays, and she had used ham
bones to make the stock, and so she apologised
to their Akela, who saved the day by telling her
that he would say a few more "Hail Marys" and
that the hot soup would do more for the boys than
abstinence!!!
For many years she was part of the training team
for Cub leaders at Gosforth Park, and worked
with Grace and Nora Peel, John ? and I think
Duncan Gamble joined them later.
She was wardrobe mistress for a few years for
the Gang show, and I well remember the sewing
machine purring away, on the dining room table,
while she conjured up costumes from remnants
and scraps and donations from local firms!
Norah Roberts was awarded the Silver Acorn for
her services to Scouting in, I think, 1959, and my
father and I went to see the St Georges Day
Parade at Windsor, when the D of E took the
salute.
I was so pleased to hear that the Cubs still
compete for the Norah Roberts trophy, and I
wonder if I could issue a challenge to the 6th
Tynemouth Cubs to win that competition next
year, because it will be 50 years since she died,
and she would have been very quietly proud to
think that she was still remembered.
It has been a privilege to put these few words
together, and has made me realise how much I
still miss her wise words, but her influence lives
on as two of my grandchildren have joined, Elliott,
8yrs, has just gone up to Cubs, and his younger
brother Lucas, is (at last) old enough to become a
Beaver!
Ann Roberts, (now Vizor!)
All Tynemouth Cub Packs still remember Norah
Roberts with an annual competition in her name
and happily the 6th won this year and are
pictured victorious!

Harvest Thank You
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the
church so beautiful for the Harvest Festival at the end
of September. And also for the generous gifts which
were very much appreciated by both Nite Bite.
The following is an extract from the letter of thanks
we received from the Bay Foodbank:
"Thank you to everyone at Church of the Holy Saviour
for your very generous support in collecting food items
at your Harvest Festival. You collected a brilliant 191

“LAST NIGHT OF THE
SCOUT PROMS”
The Scout Active Support Unit, organisers of the
above event wish to thank
EVERYONE who participated/assisted in making
this such a successful and enjoyable evening.
Without exception, the audience left singing our
praises and asking if we were planning to repeat
the show next year. As was explained it is our
District Gang Show in 2016, so maybe a Proms
Concert again in 2017.
It is particularly pleasing to be able to inform you
that through our combined effort we will be able
to present £500 to each of our chosen
Charities. The Alan Shearer Foundation
(Disabled Young People) and The Lookwide UK
(Starfish Club) (Disadvantaged Young People).
The aims and objectives of each charity were
displayed and explained by their respective
representatives, both of whom were greatly
appreciative of the time and effort Tynemouth
District Scouts had gone to in making the event
so successful. They were even more appreciative
when informed of the amount they will each
receive. Special presentations are to be
arranged at convenient dates in the near
future.
Our Press and PR Officer, Michael Dale, captured
the evening with many photos which can be
viewed on our District Website –
www.tynemouthscouts.org.uk
Sincere thanks to everyone who made donations,
provided raffle prizes and purchased both concert
All of the food items will be used in our food parcels
which will be sent to families and individuals who are
experiencing financial hardship. Your kindness and
support of the foodbank is very much appreciated."

16 Days of Activism Against
Gender Violence
Mothers’ Union wants violence
against women and girls to end
before it even starts.
Mothers’ Union is proud to be participating for a third
year in the 16 Days of Activism against gender
violence campaign as part of its ongoing work to stop
violence against women and girls. Beginning on 25th
November, the International Day for the Elimination
of Violence Against Women and ending on 10th
December, Human Rights Day we encourage our
members and supporters to join in and be a part of this
year’s campaign.
The campaign is used by individuals and groups
around the world to call for an end to all forms of
violence against women by:

develop and share new and effective
strategies
Demonstrating the solidarity of women
around the world, standing up for violence
against women
Creating tools to pressure governments to implement
promises made to eliminate violence against
womenThroughout the world our 4 million members
work across 83 countries in order to create favourable
conditions for family life in many of the areas in which
we operate to end violence against woman and girls
through prayer, practical support and advocacy &
campaigns.
The impact of this work is wide reaching; for example
in Kenya Mothers’ Union have carried out extensive
work in different communities to raise awareness and
support for those who have experienced, or who are at
the risk of genital mutilation. Members hold
workshops with church leaders and those in authority,
raising awareness of this harmful practice. Following
As well as our grassroots work in communities,
Mothers’ Union lobbies governments and policy
makers at local, national and international levels.
Whilst laws and policies relating to gender equality,
discrimination and violence against women and girls
can vary across the world there are a number of policy
principles we believe need to be implemented globally
including age appropriate relationship & sex education
and legislation outlawing all forms of violence against
women and girls.
Whilst much progress has been made there is still
much to do! Mothers’ Union has developed an
activism pack to support and offer practical advice and
ideas for anyone wishing to participate in 16 Days of
Activism. It can be found on our website:
