Are You
Accidentally
Raising a
Materialistic
Child?
By Brett Graff

Y
our child will soon be celebrating a birthday. And, regardless of the number on
the cake, presents are most certainly in order. When it comes to the rest of the
year, we have the best intentions of teaching our kids that the acquisition of
material items is not a particularly important part of life. Instead, we try to model good
behavior by teaching that items should be purchased when needed rather than when
simply desired.
However, researchers have found that even over the course of reasonable and wellintended parenting, we may be inadvertently teaching our kids to focus on material
‘wants’ (toys, computer games and clothes) when we could be focusing on what
psychology has found to be the true sources of human happiness: achieving goals,
working on quality friendships and pro-social behavior (doing nice things for other
people). And while these purchases don’t occur daily or even weekly, our continuous
missteps can eclipse the important and periodic lessons we’re hoping to instill. The
good news: it’s possible to provide our children gifts while avoiding the
parenting pitfalls of raising materialistic kids.
Why is this important? Well, materialistic kids are very likely to turn
into materialistic adults. And those people are more anxious, more
depressed and more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. People who agree
with the idea that some of the most important achievements in life
involve acquiring material possessions are also the least satisfied with
life.
Problem is, even during our most deliberate intentions to emphasize to
our kids quality endeavors — such as school and spending time with
family and friends — we could unknowingly be planting materialistic
seeds. Rewarding our kids for good behavior with material goods —
telling both ourselves and our children that they’d earned their gifts
— can have some undesired affects, according to research from Lan
Nguyen Chaplin from the University of Illinois.
In studying materialism and parenting, Chaplin learned that rewards have powerful
affects on shaping our kids’ behavior. Such rewards often come with the tiny problem of
reducing the emphasis on the skill and increasing the focus on the new pair of sneakers
or the expensive hockey stick. The reward may send a message that teaches the child
that the satisfaction from accomplishing goals is not sufficient: Earning A’s is great, but
the new cell phone I got you for doing this completes the effort.
Chaplin and her fellow researchers studied more than four hundred young people. They
dug deep into those childhoods, assessing parental support in the form of emotions,
rewards, punishments and privileges. They assessed happiness levels throughout the
years, as well as insecurities and emphasis on buying things that other people notice or
admire. And they found that the people who had received many material rewards as kids
were pretty darn likely as adults to associate any accomplishments with the acquisition
of store-bought goods.
This may not seem a great psychological tragedy. As parents, we all might like to see
our kids earn sufficient financial rewards in exchange for hard work; however, if our
kids judge another person’s success and competency based on the handbag she carries
or car he drives, it’s our child who will likely miss out on valuable lesson of happiness.
Happiness should result from working hard and feeling proud of the contributions that
you are personally making… rather than working hard to simply acquire bigger and
better material items.
Even during our most
deliberate intentions
to emphasize to our
kids quality endeavors
— such as school and
spending time with
family and friends —
we could unknowingly
be planting
materialistic seeds.
If our kids become accustomed to getting rewards for each accomplishment, they will
quickly find themselves in debt. What’s more, experts have long established that being
driven by extrinsic forces – those coming from the outside world, as opposed to internal
motivation – will make a person less inspired to put forth any effort when there are not

material rewards, such as when it comes to charity or other prosocial project. And those are proven to bring people permanent
happiness.
as we deliver these gifts with a side of healthy parenting. We have to
remind them to be grateful, says Chaplin. Gratitude and appreciation
are sentiments known to combat materialism, she says, while also
promoting happiness. We also have to teach them to give to others, so
they’re not always on the receiving end.
The researchers found that kids with supportive parents were less
likely to believe that happiness could be purchased at the mall. Their
sense of self was healthy; they didn’t need status items to fill any voids
or compensate for feelings of low self worth. They took pride in their
achievements. They were fulfilled emotionally from close relationships
with family and friends.
But does this mean to forgo a birthday gift for your birthday
boy or girl in fear of him or her growing up with materialistic
traits? Turns out, says Chaplin, we can give such gifts so long
Parents who consistently praise ‘the actual achievement’ rather than
celebrating it with a ‘bonus gift’ find that their children have higher self
esteem. This self esteem leads to more confidence which then results in
a motivation to find happiness in non-materialistic ways. So, remind
your children to be appreciated of gifts received. Such an appreciation
ultimately leads to increased happiness. And… who doesn’t want their
child to be happy?

Residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania
have reported higher than average
numbers of mentally unhealthy days
each month. This statistic has led to
the development of SuperParks. It’s
been proven that just 15 minutes
of outdoor exercise can reduce
stress; improve confidence and
mood; sharpen memory; and fight
anger, anxiety and depression. By hiking, biking or exercising
in Boulder Field, Lake Wallenpaupack, Seven Tubs Nature Area,
Hawk Mountain, or another SuperPark right here in NEPA, you
can improve your own physical and mental health. So get out,
get active and enjoy our parks, trails and wildernesses to chip
away at one of our biggest challenges, poor mental health.
To get involved, consider joining a local outdoor adventure
group or advocating for parks, trails and wildernesses near you.
