A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
A Fantastic Fall
The last sounds of summer are fading
away into ringing school bells and the
crinkle of leaves. The museum is full
of sounds of laughter, adventure and
roaring dinosaurs!

We hope you’ll be able to see the mighty beasts in Dinosaurs: Dawn of the Ice Age
are learning with every activity
this fall. The dinosaurs love Halloween and get very excited about kids visiting in
they participate in at the
costume on Healthy Trick-or-Treat Nights – especially when they’re dressed up as
dinosaurs. Join us for all the special events and activities where the whole family
museum.”

OCM focuses our programming on
the importance of free play in a child’s
development and future learning. Your
children and grandchildren are learning
with every activity they participate in
at the museum. We want to share that
learning with you and help you take
these experiences home.

Cobweb Castle: The Not-So-Scary Haunted House
Everyone’s favorite not-so-scary haunted house is returning for another year of
Halloween fun! Cobweb Castle will be open October 1-30 and will feature the
Spooky Graveyard, Find-Your-Way Forest, Pirates Parlor, Kooky Kitchen, Casper’s
Closet and Vampire’s Batty Bedroom. Look for our new , fun activities outside the
castle this year!
Healthy Trick-or-Treat Nights
Can’t wait for Halloween? Healthy
Trick-Or-Treat Nights are the perfect
way to try out the costumes before
the big night and to enjoy a safe and
healthy trick-or-treating experience!
Sponsored by Whole Foods Market and
Oriental Trading Company, these nights
(October 20 and 27, 5:30-7:30 p.m.)
offer healthy treats for kids to collect at
various stations around the museum.

Healthy Trick-Or-Treat Nights bring out the beast in little visitors
Take-Home Halloween
Have a picky eater at home? Your little goblin will gobble up these fun ideas for
Halloween-themed packed lunches!
Spooky Shapes: Cut melon, pineapple or carrots into fun Halloween shapes using
bat, pumpkin, or ghost cookie cutters.
Mummy dogs: Wrap hot dogs in strips of refrigerated crescent roll
dough. Bake according to crescent roll directions. Dot with two ketchup
or mustard “eyes”.
“Pumpkin” Quesadillas: Cut away some of the top of the tortilla to create
a “stem”. Cut eyes and a mouth out of the tortilla. Put the pumpkin
tortilla in a greased skillet for a minute to brown. Remove from pan. On a
second whole tortilla, place ¼ cup of your kids’ favorite shredded cheese
and put into a greased skillet until cheese is melted. Place “pumpkin”
tortilla on top and enjoy!

Scholarship
Omaha Children’s Museum knows that
early learning is the foundation for a
successful education. We want to help
families invest in the future education of
their children.
We’ve partnered with NEST, Nebraska’s
529 College Savings Plans to offer
a $3500 scholarship in honor of the
museum’s 35th anniversary. The winner
will be announced mid-December and
presented with the scholarship at the
museum’s annual New Year’s Eve event,
First Night of Play.

1. Create a stopper on the end of a piece of narrow
ribbon or yarn by tying a bead to the end and securing it
with a dot of glue
2. String colorful beads with large holes onto the
ribbon. Personalize it with foam cutouts or charms.
3. Remove the pencil’s eraser. Put a couple of dots of
glue in the hole and lay the ribbonn inside.
First Friday Date Night: Paleo Plunge
First Friday Family Date Nights begin again October 7!
Join us for Paleo Plunge from 4-8 p.m. and discover dinosaur fossils, an
archaeological dig and other great prehistoric activities!

Acting Out – (Wednesdays and Fridays, 1:30 p.m.): Come one,
come all. Join the fun of games involving music, drama, and dance.
Art Creations – (Most Days, 1-3:30 p.m.): Afternoons in the Creative
Arts Center are dedicated to projects sure to spark the imagination.
Autism Night – (November 13, 5:30-8 p.m.): Special evening for
children with Autism and their families. The museum has worked with
The University of Nebraska Medical Center to create an appropriate
environment. Sponsored by Autism Action Partnership, this event is
free for autistic children and their families.
Carefree Kids – (Monday, Sept. 19, 5:30-8:00 p.m.): This is a special
event for children whose immune systems have been compromised

Cobweb Castle: The Not-So-Scary Haunted House –
(October 1-30): This kid friendly castle will be open throughout the
month of October and is free with admission or membership.
Fall Festival – (Friday, September 23): Celebrate the first day of fall
with leafy activities. We’ll learn about Johnny Appleseed and make
apple prints to take home!**

Kitchen Klatter Music – (September 10, 10-11:30 a.m.): The theater
is the place to be as we explore the kitchen to find all kinds of fun ways
to make music.
Leaf Art – (November 5, 1-3:30 p.m.): It’s all about the beauty of the
fall leaves in the Creative Arts Center. Come create some leaf beauty
of your own.
Leaf Dancing – (November 5, 10-11:30 a.m.): While the leaves fall
outside we will be in the theater with music and scarves celebrating
the fall of the leaves.
Let’s Move! – (Tues.-Fri., 3:15 p.m., Sat. & Sun. 4 :15 p.m.) We’ll keep
healthy with fun activities like playing with a giant parachute, learning
a new dance, or playing backyard games. These group activities make
staying fit, fun!

25-January 6): A delightful holiday light show featuring the music of
Mannheim Steamroller. Approximately 15 minutes.

of the Ice Age exhibit for special editions of Paleo Plunge to celebrate
National Fossil Day!
NAVY Day – (Wednesday, September 7, 2-3 pm): Celebrate Navy Week
with sailors from the US Navy! Sailors will participate in a coloring activity
with kids to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Naval flight.

celebrating the end of summer by making sand creations with clay
made of sand. Come make whatever you can imagine.
Santa Arrives at Westroads – (Saturday, November 19,
9 a.m. - Noon): Join us for Santa’s Arrival at Westroads Mall! Make fun
take-home art projects, see a bubble show, eat breakfast, register

Science Show – (Mulitple times daily): Kids and parents love these
live science demonstrations presented by museum staff.. Come watch
and learn as we explode soda, make huge bubbles, and much more!
September Silhouettes – (September 17 & 18) Third generation
master scissor artist Karl Johnson will be creating unique silhouette
portraits of your child or family. Karl has been featured in more than 30
national publications. Portraits are $25, duplicates are $15 and framing
is $16. Book appointment with Sara at [email protected].
Silly Spooky Sounds – (October 8 & 9, 1-3:30 p.m. and October 22
10-11:30 a.m.): Tis’ the season for making silly spooky sounds! Come
join us as we create sounds sure to thrill.

Ships Ahoy Pirate Weekend – (Saturday and Sunday,
September 17 & 18): Take to the high seas for a pirate adventure! Make
pirate crafts, participate in a scurvy scavenger hunt and of course,
learn to talk like a pirate!
Storybook Day – (Friday, November 18): Dress up as your favorite
character from a story for National Young Reader’s Day! We’ll be doing
multiple story readings all over the museum.
Tiny Adventures – (Wednesday-Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Sunday
1:30 p.m.): These adventures in our Imagination Playground are meant
for tiny hands to learn and explore.
Wacky Wednesdays – (Wednesdays in September): Join us on
Wednesdays this September for some special Make-it and Take-it
projects in our science lab.

FROM THE INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES
T
hanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS) Omaha Children’s Museum will continue to strengthen
its community-engaged exhibit program, which brings local organizations
and businesses together to create hands-on exhibits for the children and
families of the community.
This is the museum’s first IMLS grant and it
comes at a momentous time - during our
35th year. Omaha Children’s Museum is the
only museum in Nebraska to secure an IMLS
grant in 2011 and will receive $150,000 over
three years.
Through the community-engaged exhibit program to date, partners from
the community along with the museum staff have created favorite visitor
exhibits including Construction Zone and Big Backyard. The communityengaged exhibits on the horizon will continue to delight visitors, they
include: Construction Zone: Return of the Bulldozer (Winter 2011), Itty Bitty City
(Winter 2012-13) and Things That Go (Winter 2013-14).
Museums for America is the Institute’s largest grant program for museums,
supporting projects and ongoing activities that build museums’ capacity
to serve their communities. Museums for America grants strengthen a
museum’s ability to serve the public more effectively by supporting
high-priority activities that advance the institution’s
mission and strategic goals.
