GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT
OF FINNISH ICE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
IIHF World Championship ends another
great hockey season. The event brings
together best players and teams together
with hockey fans, partners and media
members from all over the world.
Finnish Team, the Lions, have prepared
carefully for this tournament. Like all
participating teams, our aim is to capture
the IIHF World Championship title and
travel back home with gold medals.
Although World Championship games
were played in Bratislava already in
1992, this is the first time Slovakia hosts
IIHF World Championship. Knowing how
passionately and enthusiastically
Slovakians feel about ice hockey, it’s
fair to expect we have an exceptional
event ahead of us. Both Bratislava and
Kosice will offer first class hockey on ice
as well as celebration and memorable
side events off the ice.
On behalf of the Finnish Ice Hockey
Association I want to wish all the
participating teams success in the
tournament – may the best team win.
Kalervo Kummola
President, Finnish Ice Hockey Association
Chairman, Local Organizing Committee
for the 2012 IIHF World Championship
3
PS. After Slovakia Finland and Sweden
will join forces and together host two IIHF
World Championships in a row. I wish you
warmly welcome to Helsinki and Stockholm in 2012!
FINLAND’S SIGHTS SET ON THE
15th OF MAY
In the next WC tournament in 1949 in
Stockholm the Finnish team fared better
winning two games out of four and
placing 7th overall. In 1965 Tampere
hosted the tournament as the Soviet
Union took the gold medals. The Soviet
team dominated the international competitions from 1963 to 1971 winning
every WC and Olympic tournament
held during that time.
Antti Pihlström is
looking to provide
lots of energy to
the Finnish team
in Slovakia
The very first IIHF Ice Hockey World
Championship tournament was organized
in Chamonix, France, Berlin, Germany and
Vienna, Austria in 1930. That was the first
IIHF tournament outside of the Olympics
which featured North American teams.
Finland participated in the separate World
Championship tournament for the first
time in 1939. The Finns were coached
by Erkki Saarinen and the team lost all
of their five games in the tournament by
a goal differential of 5-25.
4
In the 1987 Sweden won the World
Championship tournament held in Vienna,
Austria and became the first country in
22 years outside of the Soviet Union or
Czechoslovakia to win the gold. The 90s
marked the fall of the Soviet Union and
their previous dominance was a thing
of the past as Sweden won the gold in
1991 and 1992. In the 1992 tournament
Finland won its first World Championship
medal as head-coach Pentti Matikainen
led the team to a second-place finish.
1995 is a year no Finnish ice hockey fan
will forget as the Finns won their first and
only World Championship gold to date.
Finland beat tournament host Sweden
4-1 in the finals with Ville Peltonen’s hattrick. Although last year in Germany the
Finns lost to champion Czech Republic in
the quarterfinals placing sixth, this year
the Finnish team is looking to play in the
finals on the 15th of May in Bratislava
and come back home with the gold.

When a goaltender who has
previously been only in a backup
role suddenly plays 49 games in the
Finnish SM-Liiga, some eyebrows
are bound to be raised. Niko Hovinen
did just that in the 2010-11 season
for Pelicans Lahti. When the Helsinki
native played for Jokerit Helsinki
in 2006-2008 he played in just five
games. For the 2008-09 season
Hovinen signed with Pelicans and
played five times the games he

Teemu Lassila has always been a
very good goaltender, but in recent
years he has risen to the SM-Liiga’s
absolute elite. In 2003-04, on just
his second SM-Liiga season, he got
all the way to the finals with TPS
Turku but lost the title to Kärpät
Oulu. In 2007 Lassila started his
campaign with HPK Hämeenlinna,
but was the back-up to Andy Chiodo.
On his second season Lassila
captured the starter job and played
54 games earning 26 wins. In the
2009-10 season Lassila and HPK
were surprise finalists but lost the
championship to an even bigger
surprise finalist, TPS. The Nashville
Predators’ 4th round pick plays with
an aggressive style and has quick
reflexes.

The Phoenix Coyotes drafted Ossi
Väänänen on the second round of
the 1998 NHL draft, but it was not
until the 2000-01 season when
Väänänen made his NHL debut. The
two years he spent developing in
the SM-Liiga paid off as his rookie
campaign was a huge success.
Väänänen played all but one game
that season for the Coyotes potting
4 goals to combine for a total of
16 points. Väänänen spent the six
following seasons as a core player
in the NHL until he signed with
Djurgården of the Swedish Elite
League. Väänänen made a comeback to the NHL in the successive
season, but headed to Europe in
2009 and joined Minsk Dynamo in
the KHL. Väänänen returned to the
SM-Liiga and Jokerit for the 201011 season and now provides veteran
leadership to the team as its captain.
The stay-at-home defenseman will
be a strong physical presence for
team Finland in Slovakia and will
especially help the Lions clear their
goal crease.
Lasse Kukkonen is one of the most
prolific players to come out of the
Kärpät Oulu junior system. The twotime SM-Liiga All Star defenseman
was one of the league’s best in doing what a defender should: stopping
the opposing forwards. Kukkonen
has one SM-Liiga championship
from 2005 after he had come back
from a one-year stint from the NHL
and the AHL. Kukkonen returned to
the NHL on the following season
and played in various teams until he
came back to Europe in 2009. From
the 2009-10 season Kukkonen has
been playing in the Russian KHL
league, and most recently for
Metallurg Magnitogorsk alongside
fellow national team players Juhamatti Aaltonen and Janne Niskala.

Topi Jaakola is the type of defenseman every team needs: a stay-athome guy who no glaring weaknesses. Another sample of the strong
Kärpät Oulu junior system, Jaakola
made his debut in the SM-Liiga at
just 17 years of age. Jaakola’s best
season points-wise was in 2007-08
with Kärpät when he scored 3 goals
and 14 points in 55 games. Next
season Jaakola joined Södertälje in
the Swedish Elite League and posted
0+11 in 51 games. Last season he
scored his first two Swedish Elite
League goals with Luleå earning a
total of seven points in 55 games..
Sami Lepistö is an all-round
defenseman who made his national
breakthrough in the 2003-04 season
when he was able to hold on to a
roster spot as a rookie in Jokerit
Helsinki. The Helsinki native was
drafted on the 3rd round as 66th
overall by the Washington Capitals
but played just a total of 14 games
in the NHL in the span of two
seasons despite scoring four goals
and 45 points in 55 AHL games.
Lepistö started the 2009-10 season
in the Phoenix Coyotes and increased his ice-time significantly
playing 66 games that season.
Lepistö was traded to the Columbus
Blue Jackets on the 2010-11 trade
deadline and is now looking to
develop to a key player for
Columbus.

making his SM-Liiga debut in the
1997-98 season. He left the team for
the 2001-02 season when he joined
Tappara Tampere. After spending
two season there, Välivaara signed
with Linköping in the Swedish Elite
League. Välivaara spent a total
of six seasons in Sweden, four in
Linköping and two in Malmö where
he and the rest of the Redhawks
suffered relegation and spent the
2007-08 season in the Allsvenskan.
Välivaara came home for the next
season and formed one of the best
defensive tandems of the league
with Olli Malmivaara. Väliv aara and
Malmivaara were a key part of the
JYP team that ended its season in
championship celebrations. The
offensively underrated defenseman
has since stayed with JYP and is
one of the elite defensemen of the
SM-Liiga.
Before Janne Niskala made his
breakthrough playing with Lukko
Rauma in the SM-Liiga he had
to pay some dues playing in the
second-highest ice-hockey league
in Finland, the Mestis, and even
in Manchester, Great Britain. After
Niskala made his breakthrough in
the 2001-02 season, there was no
looking back. He scored 7 goals and
20 points on his first full SM-Liiga
season, which he dwarfed in 200304 scoring 21 goals and 36 points
in 55 games. After that standout
season he was drafted by the Nashville Predators. Before going to North
America Niskala played in Switzerland, and in Sweden where he lead
the league’s defensemen in goals
as well as points with 19+30=49 in
53 games. Niskala tested the water
in North America, but played only 6
games for Tampa Bay before asking
to be waived. After two seasons in
Sweden he most recently played for
Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL
and led his own team’s defensemen
in goals and points with 11+19=30
in 54 regular season games.

When Anssi Salmela headed to the
dressing room bloodied up after
fighting David Backes in the 2008
WCs, he probably did not know what
a cult following he had gotten. When
he played for Pelicans Lahti and
Tappara Tampere in the Finnish
SM-Liiga he was an offensive
defenseman who was known for
his prowess with the puck and his
ability to orchestrate the power play.
Salmela’s road to a regular NHL spot
has been rough but when known
defensive-minded coach Jacques
Lemaire kept him on the New Jersey
Devils roster in their final battle for a
playoff berth, he seems to be on the
right path.
When Pasi Puistola debuted in the
SM-Liiga in the 1997-98 season for
Tappara Tampere, he got off to a
running start. The smooth-skating
all-round defender scored three
goals and added 13 assists in the
regular season and was awarded
the Jorma Wasama Memorial Trophy
as the rookie of the year. On his
last SM-Liiga season the Tappara
defenseman finished first in goals
by defenders with 14 and 3rd in
the overall scoring race with 30
points. After the season Puistola
joined HV71 in the Swedish Elite
League for the 2006-07 season.
The 2009-10 season was a huge
success for Puistola as he scored his
personal points record (13+26=39)
which made him 4th in defenseman
points and 2nd in goals in the whole
league. In the following playoffs
Puistola was first in points by
defensemen with his teammates
David Petrasek and Adam Almqvist,
and ended the season with the
Swedish League title.

A franchise player is a player who is
not simply the best player on their
team, but a player that the team
can build their franchise around
for the foreseeable future. For the
Minnesota Wild Mikko Koivu fits the
bill perfectly. Koivu puts in massive
amounts of work on both ends of
the ice and despite his big defensive
input, Koivu was able to score 17
goals and 62 points last season
even though he missed 11 games
due to injury. Mikko Koivu won the
U18 World Championship alongside
Jarkko Immonen and Tuomo
Ruutu and has medaled in every
international tournament he has
participated in since. Koivu is looking
to keep the streak going leading the
Finnish Lions in Slovakia.
Sunny Center
Tuomo Ruutu has never shied away
from physical play and likes to
throw his body around a lot. Ruutu
was second in number of hits in the
2010-11 NHL regular season with
a whopping 309, which averages
to three hits per game. Ruutu has
suffered from his physical play,
however, as he has missed a lot
of games due to injury especially
early in his NHL career. When it
rained, it poured for Ruutu as he
contemplated on retiring after the
2006 World Championships. Ruutu
came back and after a couple of
more seasons with the Chicago
Blackhawks he was traded to the
Carolina Hurricanes. In Raleigh,
North Carolina Ruutu has gotten
healthy and has risen to a key player
of the Hurricanes with the same
recipe: playing hard and putting up
points in the process.

Petteri Nokelainen could be described as the epitome of a Finnish
ice hockey forward. He is a two-way
forward that is physically in great

a good NHL career for himself by being a player who is relentless on the

Antti Pihlström can be simply
described as a ball of energy that
likes to throw hits hard and often.
Pihlström is very fast and despite his
height (5’11”) he is also extremely
strong and good in the corners.
When Pihlström was playing for the
Nashville Predators in the NHL and
its AHL affiliate Milwaukee Admirals
in 2007-2009, he was used almost
purely as a energy player who just
chips the puck into the opponent’s
half and grinds away at their top
lines. After Pihlström returned to
Finland he has showcased his offensive talents with an over a point
per game average. He debuted in
the adult national team in the 2008
WC tournament and led the Finnish
team with five goals.
Janne Lahti was thought to be an
eternal prospect until he grabbed a

goals in 43 games. Lahti saw his
goal and point totals dip for the

2006-07. The latter proved to be
Lahti’s breakthrough season as he
scored 20 goals and 34 points in

After a 65 game season that saw
him score 9 goals earning a total

Finnish players are almost always
described as hard-working, physical
guys that are great team players but
do not have great offensive instincts.
Juhamatti Aaltonen does not fit
into that traditional mold as he has
always been known as a tricky forward that can generate dangerous
scoring chances on his every shift.
It was not until the 2009-10 season
with Pelicans, Lahti when Aaltonen
started to realize the immense talent
he has always had. Aaltonen lit up
the Finnish SM-Liiga with 28 goals,
which was tied for the league lead,
and 49 points in 56 games on the
Pelicans team that finished 12th.
After his final breakthrough
Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL
acquired Aaltonen from Pelicans.
Aaltonen was not shell-shocked
from the change of scenery and
posted 20 goals and 39 points in 54
regular season games, which was
second most from Metallurg players.
There is no doubt Jesse Joensuu
has the talent to be a regular NHL
player, but it was not until this
season the former teen star of the
Finnish SM-Liiga is exhibiting that
talent. Joensuu made his SM-Liiga
debut as the youngest player ever
at just 15 years of age and after his
breakout season in 2007-08, when
he scored 35 points in 56 games for
Ässät Pori he decided to head to the
New York Islanders’ AHL affiliate, the
Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Joensuu
spent a couple of seasons in the AHL
producing points at a decent pace,
but in the 2010-11 season he broke
through to the Islanders’ NHL roster
playing 42 games and earning a
total of nine points.

Mikael Granlund debuted in the
SM-Liiga in the 2008-09 season
on his 17th birthday and played
a total of two games with Kärpät,
but he signed with HIFK Helsinki
in the offseason. All eyes were on
Granlund as he got ready for his first
full season in the SM-Liiga, but he
lived up to the hype by scoring 13
goals and 40 points in 43 games
earning the Jarmo Wasama –award
given out to the rookie of the year.
Expectations were equally high for
his second season with HIFK and,
despite a concussion that sidelined
him for several games; he delivered
again earning 36 points in 39
games. In the playoffs Granlund
was one of the key players for the
championship-winning HIFK team
potting 5 goals for a total of 16
points in 15 games. Lauded as the
next great one of Finnish ice hockey,
Mikael Granlund’s first seasons in
men’s ice hockey have not lowered
those expectations in any way.
Leo Komarov has found a new facet
to his game recently. When playing
in Finland for Ässät Pori and Pelicans
Lahti, the Narva, Estonia native was
known almost purely as an energy
player, but after joining Dynamo
Moscow in 2009 Komarov has seen
his point and goal totals rising.
During the 2010-11 season Komarov
scored 14 goals and 26 points in
52 games which was second only
to Konstantin Gorovikov’s 38 points
for Dynamo. In the playoffs Dynamo
fell in six games to Dinamo Riga
but Komarov scored at a point per
game pace leading his team with
four goals and two assists. Before
Komarov enraged the opposition in
just post-whistle scrums, but now he
does it also by scoring on them.

3. More space for receiving the puck.
4. More efficience in starts by using the base.
5. The base part of the blade makes fast whips possible.
6. Increases your score.
7. Breaks old habits.
8. Helps comprehensively in holding the puck.
9. A small extra in the right point gives valuable help.
10. Design is the word of the day, why not in
