MATKALLA MENESTYKSEEN.
Suomalaista jääkiekkoa siivittämässä.
Finland is currently in the middle of an unprecedented ice hockey spring. A year ago the Finns
finished off their sensational spring with an equally sensational win of arch-rival Sweden
in the 2011 World Championship gold medal game by a score of 6 – 1.
I wish to welcome all members of the media
from around the world to this historic
World Championship tournament!

2012 IIHF ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Now Finland and Sweden are breaking ice together by co-hosting the 2012 and 2013 World
Championship tournaments. Finland is the main host for these games and all the final
games, starting from the semifinals, are played in the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki. Next year
the roles are switched and Sweden will act as main host and the finals will be played in the
Ericsson Globe in Stockholm.
GREETINGS
GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE
FINNISH ICE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
ANOTHER CASE OF DÉJÀ VU?
Although last year’s case of semifinals déjà vu
ended well for the Lions, they might want to
avoid it this year, as on the 8th of May in 2009 it
was USA facing off against Russia in the World
Championship semis. Finland was eliminated two
days earlier by the US team by a score of 3 – 2. All
of Finland hopes that on the 19th of May in 2012
the Lions have avoided another case of déjà vu
and are still playing for the gold medal in the
semifinals in front of a roaring home crowd.
The 16th of May in 2008. Jukka Jalonen’s first WC
tournament in the Lions’ helm. Finland faces off
against Russia in the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec
City, QC, Canada in the World Championship
semifinals. Russia stuns the Finns by beating
them 4 – 0 and sends the Lions to the bronze
game. Fast-forward three years to the 13th of May
in 2011. Finland faces off against Russia in the
Orange Arena in Bratislava, Slovakia in the World
Championship semifinals. Finland stuns Russia
3 – 0 and advanced to the finals.
The 17 th of May in 2008. Finland faces off
against Sweden in the Pepsi Coliseum
The captain of the Minnesota Wild and
last year’s world championship team,
Mikko Koivu will try to break the home
tournament spell and lead finland to a
second consecutive championship in Helsinki.

2012 IIHF ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
in Quebec City, QC, Canada in the World
Championship bronze medal game. Finland stuns
the Swedes 4 – 0 and comes home with the bronze
medals. Fast-forward three years to the 15th of
May in 2011. Finland faces off against Sweden
in the Orange Arena in Bratislava, Slovakia in
the World Championship final. Finland stuns
the Swedes 6 – 1 and comes home with the gold
medals.
A year ago it all felt unreal for Finnish ice hockey
fans. The Lions had just beaten their arch rivals
Tre Kronor 6 – 1 in the World Championship
final and the whole country seemed to erupt.
People gathered spontaneously in town squares
and complete strangers celebrated Finland’s
second World Championship together like a big
family. Later, almost 100 000 fans gathered
in the Helsinki Market Square to celebrate the
championship with the team, large ceremonies
were held in the championship team members’
home towns, special commemorative stamps of
Mikael Granlund’s lacrosse goal were printed…
All of Finland partied like it was 1995, although
in head coach Jukka Jalonen’s case, it may have
felt a bit like 2008.

Petri Vehanen’s road to a
starter job in Rauma was
relatively long, but after
getting the job he performed
well. His successful seasons
in the Finnish SM-Liiga
culminated in 2009 – 10
when he played 18 games
winning 14 of them and
posting a 94.09 save
percentage and a 1.65 GAA.
Vehanen was then acquired
by AK Bars Kazan of the
Russian KHL mid-season
and lead the team to a
league title while posting
league-leading statistics in
the regular season. In the
2011 – 2012 KHL season
Vehanen was once again
solid, posting a 91.6 save
percentage and a 2.35 GAA
in the regular season. In the
postseason he elevated his
stats to 94.3 and 1.85 GAA.
Was the top goaltender in the
2011 World Championships
with a save percentage of
95.43 and a 1.24 GAA.

Karri Rämö was born in
Asikkala near Lahti and was
developed as a player in
Lahti by both Kiekko-Reipas
and Pelicans. After playing
his first full season with
Pelicans he moved to HPK
Hämeenlinna where he made
his breakthrough. Rämö
had a terrific season as he
played 24 regular season
games with a 2.16 GAA and
a .929 save percentage. After
his breakthrough season
the Tampa Bay Lightning
draft pick went over to North
America where he played for
the Norfolk Admirals in the
AHL and the Lightning in
the NHL. After the 2009 – 10
season Rämö transferred to
Avanagard Omsk in the KHL
and has since been in the
league’s goaltending elite.

The former second overall
NHL draft pick’s career in
the big league got off to
a rocky start. Lehtonen’s
first taste of the league in
the 2003 – 04 season was
sensational. He played four
games with the Thrashers
winning all and posting one
shutout, a 1.26 GAA and a
0.953 save percentage, but
could not solidify his position
in the league’s goaltending
elite in the following
seasons. Because of nagging
injuries, Lehtonen missed
several games over the years
and was traded to the Dallas
Stars during the 2009 –10
season. In Dallas the former
teen prodigy has started
his steady climb towards
the league elite and nearly
backstopped the Stars to the
NHL playoffs in 2011 – 12.

Lasse Kukkonen is one of
the most prolific players
to come out of the Kärpät
Oulu junior system. The
two-time SM-Liiga All-Star
defenseman was one of the
league’s best in doing what
a defender should: stopping
the opposing forwards.
Kukkonen has one SM-Liiga
championship from 2005 and
has been playing in the KHL
since the 2009 – 10 season.
The 2011 world champion
currently plays for Metallurg
Magnitogorsk alongside
fellow national team players
Juhamatti Aaltonen and Ville
Lajunen.

The Phoenix Coyotes drafted
Ossi Väänänen on the second
round of the 1998 NHL
draft, but it was not until
the 2000 – 01 season when
Väänänen made his NHL
debut. Väänänen played all
but one game that season for
the Coyotes potting 4 goals
to combine for a total of 16
points. Väänänen spent the
six following seasons as a
core player in the NHL until
he signed with Djurgården
of the Swedish Elite League.
Väänänen made a comeback
to the NHL in the successive
season, but headed to
Europe in 2009 and joined
Minsk Dynamo in the KHL.
Väänänen returned to the
SM-Liiga and Jokerit for
the 2010 – 11 season and
has since provided veteran
leadership to the team as its
captain. The stay-at-home
defenseman was a strong
physical presence for team
Finland in Slovakia.

The Rantasalmi native,
Jarkko Immonen made his
national breakthrough while
playing for JYP Jyväskylä.
After nearly reaching 50
points in two consecutive
seasons the Toronto Maple
Leafs draft pick, whose
rights were traded to the New
York Rangers, went to test
the waters in North America.
Immonen spent two years
there and played 20 games
with the Rangers, but he
was mainly playing in the
AHL with the Hartford Wolf
Pack. Immonen came back to
SM-Liiga in 2007 for a twoyear stint which ended in a
league title with JYP and a
selection to the league’s All
Star line. Immonen won the
2011 world championship
with the Lions in Bratislava
and won the tournament’s
scoring title with 12 points in
9 games.

Jokinen was known at the
start of his NHL career first
and foremost as a penalty
shot specialist but after a
sensational playoff push
with Carolina in 2009, the
former 197th overall pick
has solidified himself as
a top-six player. Jokinen’s
best season points-wise
was his second season with
the Hurricanes, in which he
scored cracked the 30-goal
mark scoring 30 goals and
35 assists in 81 games. The
Kalajoki-native represented
Finland most recently in the
2010 World Championships
scoring two goals and
totaling three points in seven

Niko Kapanen is a player of
many roles. Because of his
quickness and responsibility
the 2011 world champion
can be used in a defensive
role and as a PK specialist
as well as on the PP and in
an offensive role because of
his high hockey IQ and deft
vision. He excelled when
playing in the SM-liiga in
Finland and showed in the
2002– 03 and 2005 – 06
seasons that he can play his
game in the NHL. Kapanen
joined AK Bars Kazan in the
KHL for the 2008 – 09 season
and struck gold as Kazan
took consecutive league
titles. This season he scored
his personal points record in
the KHL, 12 goals and a total
of 39 points in 54 games,
with Ak Bars.

Pyörälä was a defensive
player in the start of his
career but developed later
into a first line player.
He especially developed
a good chemistry with
Janne Pesonen while both
were playing for Kärpät
Oulu. That good chemistry
resulted in three SM-Liiga
championships before
Pyörälä went to Timrå IK that
plays in the Swedish Elite
League. After two seasons
with Timrå Pyörälä earned
an opening-night roster spot
with the Philadelphia Flyers
to start the 2009 – 2010
season. After returning to
Sweden the 2011 world
champion has two seasons
under his belt with Frölunda
HC and scored 22 goals in 53
games for the Indians this
season.

Pihlström is very fast and
despite his height (5’11”) he
is also extremely strong and
good in the corners. When he
was playing for the Nashville
Predators in the NHL and
its AHL affiliate Milwaukee
Admirals in 2007– 2009,
he was used almost purely
as an energy player who
just chips the puck into the
opponent’s half and grinds
away at their top lines.
After Pihlström returned to
Finland he showcased his
offensive talents with over a
point per game average. This
piqued KHL team Salavat
Yulaev Ufa’s interest and he
was traded mid-season in
2011 – 12. Pihlström played
31 games for Ufa and scored
a total of 14 points. The 2011
world champion debuted in
the adult national team in
the 2008 WC tournament and
led the Finnish team with
five goals.

Next Generation Car Shop
Uusi maamerkki on syntymässä. Ajat muuttuvat ja
autokauppojen on aika muuttua mukana. Sunny
Car Center on uuden sukupolven autotalo; maailmanlaajuinen konsepti, joka tähtää energiatehokkaampaan ja ekologisempaan autokauppaan, mitä
koskaan on rakennettu. Sunny Car Center aloittaa
uuden, vihreän aikakauden hyödyntämällä laajamittaisesti aurinkopaneeleja hybridi- ja täyssähköautojen latausjärjestelmissä.
Sunny Car Centeristä tulee Euroopan suurin autokaupan keskittymä. Vuonna 2014 valmistuva
120 000 m2 rakennuskokonaisuus keskittää koko
Hämeenlinnan ympäristön autokaupan kaikkine
oheistoimintoineen yhdelle helposti saavutettavalle
alueelle ns. Kirstulan kolmioon. Uusien autojen eri
merkit näyttelytiloineen ja vaihtoautot ovat omissa
myymälöissään, mutta saman katon alla – kaikki
autoiluun liittyvä on yhdessä paikassa: huolto-, korjaus-, maalaus- ja katsastuspalvelut, rengasmyynti ja
autonvuokraus.
Sunny Car Center on elämys koko perheelle, jossa
Monipuolisia ravintolapalveluja unohtamatta.

LEIJONAT!
Suomen Jääkiekkoliiton pääyhteistyöyritys
Pohjola on Leijonien pääyhteistyökumppani.
kannustavan Leijona-paidan. Kampanja on voimassa useimmissa uusia autoja myyvissä
liikkeissä. Kysy lisää automyyjältäsi.
