IIHF WORLD U18 CHAMPIONSHIP April 18 – April 28 2013, Sochi, RUSSIA MATKALLA MENESTYKSEEN. Suomalaista jääkiekkoa siivittämässä. GREETINGS GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE FINNISH ICE HOCkEy ASSOCIATION The IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship is one of the last major international tournaments of the season as well as one of the most interesting ones. The U18 WM provides us with an annual sneak peek into the upcoming NHL draft class as well as many exciting games. IIHF WORLD JUNIOR U18 CHAMPIONSHIP In last year’s tournament USA made a statement to the hockey world in the final, beating Sweden by seven unanswered goals and claiming the gold medals. USA has done wonderful things with its youth development programs and has emerged as a powerhouse in junior hockey. They have done especially well on the under-18 level, where they have won the last four titles. Finland ended last year’s tournament in disappointment with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Canada in the bronze medal game. Leading the young Finns into Sochi for this year’s World Championship will be head coach Mika Marttila, who is no stranger to success in international tournaments. Marttila’s last U18 World Championship in 2009 ended in celebration as Finland defeated Canada in the battle for the bronze. I am confident that Marttila can guide the team to success the second time around and can help the team claim its seventh World Championship medal. I wish all teams the best of luck, and may the best team win! Kalervo Kummola President Finnish Ice Hockey Association 3 RED, WHITE AND BLUE DOMINANCE IIHF WORLD JUNIOR U18 CHAMPIONSHIP The 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship will be held in Sochi, Russia and will serve as a test tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Coming into the tournament, the clear-cut favorites should be USA and the Swedes, who have faced off in the U18 championship final for three years in a row. Last year’s tournament ended like it did for three years before it; in red, white and blue confetti rain. The way USA won the gold underlined their current dominance of international junior hockey; after going undefeated through the preliminary round they capped off the tournament with a 7 – 0 rout against the Swedes in the final. Finland’s tournament was looking promising through the preliminary round when they lost only to USA and beat Canada finishing second in their group. After dealing with Germany in their quarterfinal match, they were bounced out of the gold medal game by Sweden and were forced into the bronze game against Canada. Although the Finns came back from a three-goal deficit, it was Hunter Shinkaruk who ended the game in overtime and started the Canadian celebrations. A considerable bright spot for the Finns in the bronze medal game, as well as the whole tournament, was the forward trio of Artturi Lehkonen, Henrik Haapala and Rasmus Kulmala. The three Finns netted a total of six points in the bronze game and finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the tournament scoring race after Canadian defenseman Matt Dumba. Returning this year to the Finnish team from that trio is artturi Lehkonen, who is hot off his breakthrough season in the SM-liiga. Lehkonen moved from Turku to Kuopio and was an important part of KalPa scoring 30 points in 45 regular season games as well as three points in four playoff games. Guiding the Finnish ship in the tournament will be Mika Marttila, who is returning for his second U18 world championship as head coach. Last time in 2009 Marttila and his team returned with bronze medals and they are hungry to return with some hardware this year around. 5 SCHEDULE IIHF WORLD JUNIOR U18 CHAMPIONSHIP April 18 – April 28 2013, Sochi, RUSSIA # time round tHursDay, aPriL 18, 2013 1 15:00 Preliminary 2 15:30 Preliminary 3 19:00 Preliminary 4 20:00 Preliminary usa = United States Fin = Finland rus = Russia cZe = Czech Republic Lat = Latvia GrouP B shaiba arena sWe = Sweden can = Canada Ger = Germany sui = Switzerland sVK = Slovakia Game Venue Location B A B A Ger - sWe Lat - Fin sVK - can rus - usa Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Sochi Sochi Sochi Sochi FriDay, aPriL 19, 2013 5 17:00 Preliminary 6 19:00 Preliminary A B cZe - Lat sui - sVK Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Sochi Sochi saturDay, aPriL 20, 2013 7 15:00 Preliminary 8 15:30 Preliminary 9 19:00 Preliminary 10 20:00 Preliminary B A B A can - Ger usa - cZe sWe- sui Fin - rus Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Sochi Sochi Sochi Sochi sunDay, aPriL 21, 2013 11 17:00 Preliminary 12 19:00 Preliminary A B Lat - usa sVK - sui Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Sochi Sochi monDay, aPriL 22, 2013 13 15:00 Preliminary 14 15:30 Preliminary 15 19:00 Preliminary 16 20:00 Preliminary B A B A can - sui Fin - cZe Ger - sVK rus - Lat Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Sochi Sochi Sochi Sochi tuesDay, aPriL 23, 2013 17 15:00 Preliminary 18 15:30 Preliminary 19 19:00 Preliminary 20 20:00 Preliminary B A B A sWe - can usa - Fin sui - Ger cZe - rus Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Sochi Sochi Sochi Sochi tHursDay, aPriL 25, 2013 21 12:00 Relegation 22 16:00 Quarter-final 23 16:00 Quarter-final 24 20:00 Quarter-final 25 20:00 Quarter-final 5a - 5B tBD tBD tBD tBD Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Shaiba Arena Sochi Sochi Sochi Sochi Sochi FriDay, aPriL 26, 2013 26 12:00 Relegation 27 16:00 Semifinal 28 20:00 Semifinal 5a - 5B tBD tBD Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Bolshoi Ice Dome Sochi Sochi Sochi 5a - 5B L27 - L28 W27 - W28 Shaiba Arena Bolshoi Ice Dome Bolshoi Ice Dome Sochi Sochi Sochi IIHF WORLD JUNIOR U18 CHAMPIONSHIP GrouP a Bolshoi ice Dome Group WeDnesDay, aPriL 24, 2013 No Games Scheduled saturDay, aPriL 27, 2013 No Games Scheduled sunDay, aPriL 28, 2013 29 12:00 Relegation 30 16:00 Bronze 31 20:00 Gold note: Order of the games with ”tbd” in place of the team match-up will be decided by IIHF Directorate upon completion of the previous round. 7 f PETRIFUN.fi PAITAKAUPPA.fi TEAM FINLAND Born (dd.mm.yyyy) Ht (cm) WtSHOOT/ (kg)CatCH Husso Ville Kähkönen Kaapo Lankinen Kevin Saros Juuse HIFK Helsinki Blues Espoo Jokerit Helsinki HPK Hämeenlinna 06.02.1995 16.08.1996 28.04.1995 19.04.1995 189 187 186 180 87 89 77 82 L L L L Defence 2 D 3 D 4 D 5 D 6 D 7 D 8 D 22 D 27 D Kuronen Jimi Lintuniemi Alex Mäkelä Aleksi Honka Julius Pulli Matias Mäkinen Atte Ilvonen Mika Lyytinen Joonas Autio Erik HIFK Helsinki Jokerit Helsinki Ilves Tampere JYP Jyväskylä TPS Turku Tappara Tampere Blues Espoo KalPa Kuopio Blues Espoo 17.05.1995 23.09.1995 08.02.1995 03.12.1995 08.03.1995 17.05.1995 27.02.1995 04.04.1995 23.07.1995 180 190 187 179 177 191 172 182 178 85 93 86 77 73 94 70 67 77 L R L R R R L L L Forwards 9 F 10 F 11 F 12 F 13 F 14 F 15 F 18 F 19 F 20 F 21 F 23 F 24 F 26 F 28 F 29 F Tanus Jonatan Mustonen Aleksi Ojantakanen Kasperi Lehkonen Artturi Antonen Joose Ikonen Juuso Saarela Aleksi Ainali Aleksi Puhakka Janne Rantanen Mikko Rauhala Otto Kinnunen Saku Kapanen Kasperi Westermarck Felix Ojamäki Niko Kiviranta Joel Peterborough Petes -OHL Jokerit Helsinki Jokerit Helsinki KalPa Kuopio JYP Jyväskylä Blues Espoo Lukko Rauma HIFK Helsinki Blues Espoo TPS Turku Tappara Tampere KalPa Kuopio KalPa Kuopio Blues Espoo Ässät Pori Jokerit Helsinki 04.06.1995 28.03.1995 12.01.1995 04.07.1995 28.04.1995 03.01.1995 07.01.1997 14.04.1995 24.02.1995 29.10.1996 12.04.1995 03.01.1995 23.07.1996 08.04.1995 17.06.1995 23.03.1996 175 175 180 179 187 173 178 183 178 186 180 178 180 185 181 180 82 73 73 71 83 76 85 86 80 81 85 80 78 87 79 73 L L R L R R L R L L L L R L R L IIHF WORLD JUNIOR U18 CHAMPIONSHIP G G G G 1 30 30 31 ROSTER # Pos Player*Club Goalies * The final Team will be chosen from these players. We’ve been preparing for the main event the whole season. In the summer the team was together for 21 days and in August we played in the final of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament against Canada. In November we were in a tournament in USA, in December we won a 5-nation tournament and in February we won two and lost two games in another five-nation tournament against USA, Sweden, Czech Republic and Russia. In our first preparation camp we are playing twice against JYP-Akatemia. We have also done scouting throughout the season. The health situation of the team is good coming into the tournament. What style of hockey is your team going to play? Along the same lines than throughout our three-year project. We want to take the initiative and be an active TEAM that reacts well and skates hard in both directions. What is essential to succeeding in the World championships? Goaltending and special teams are a big part of it. We have to be more effective than our opponent. The team has to be tight-knit because team spirit is an important factor during a long tournament. is having many players with experience from major international tournaments an advantage to your team? We have players that played in last year’s tournament as well as players who have experienced and succeeded in the SM-liiga. The margins between the top teams are small, so the experience will of course benefit us. Finnish ice hockey is seeing an emergence of young talent. Why? Finnish coaching has always been world class and players have also become more well-rounded. The actual playing of the game has been emphasized more in the big picture. In addition, the SM-liiga has transformed and teams have been more eager bringing in young players. 13 Maista uusi Jaffa Super!
