Yellow and Red Flowers — Glass — Heather Corey
Donated by Found Glass Designs
Heather Corey lives in Vermont and enjoys the sense of community that
working locally brings. She also values the inspiration that using found and
scrap materials brings. Of her work, she says, “The objects and materials speak
for themselves. I use glass in a way that talks about shape, contour, and lines
just as much as it talks about color. While some pieces are the result of
matching shapes of glass with mapped-out scenes or drawings, the place where
the artist finds creation from found objects and structures is where the design
may also begin." Dimensions: 10"x6"

Purple Daze
Donated by The Vermont Book Shop
Purple Daze is a young adult novel set in suburban Los Angeles in 1965. Six high school students
share their experiences and feelings in interconnected free verse and traditional poems about war,
feminism, riots, love, racism, rock 'n' roll, high school, and friendship.
Although there have been verse novels published recently, none explore the changing and volatile
1960's in America-- a time when young people drove a cultural and political revolution. With
themes like the costs and casualties of war, the consequences of sex, and the complex relationships
between teens, their peers, and their parents, this story is still as relevant today as it was 45 years
ago. Advance proof: Young Adult.

Warthrop is asked by his former fiance to rescue her husband from the
Wendigo, a creature that starves even as it gorges itself on human flesh, which

considers the Wendigo to be fictitious, he relents and rescues her husband from
death and starvation, and then sees the man transform into a Wendigo. Can the
doctor and Will Henry hunt down the ultimate predator, who, like the legendary
vampire, is neither living nor dead, whose hunger for human flesh is never
satisfied? This second book in The Monstrumologist series explores the line
between myth and reality, love and hate, genius and madness. Advance proof:

Long Weekend at Bernd Heinrich's Maine Cabin
Donated by Rachel Smolker & Bernd Heinrich
Bernd Heinrich is one of the world’s most insightful and renowned naturalists.
One New York Times book reviewer wrote, “[His mind] is a big antic thing,
like a raven, and meant to live outdoors.” This trip is your once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to experience that mind – and some of the land that has inspired it –
firsthand.
Spend 3-4 days at Bernd’s hand-built log cabin in Western Maine, near Mt.
Blue State Park, where he wrote A Year in the Maine Woods. During your
stay, he will arrange to be on the property as well (in a second cabin nearby,
possibly with his family) – and will take time to guide you through some of the
300+ acres around the cabin.
The cabin is very rustic, a half-mile hike from the road, and without electricity
or running water. You’ll sleep in sleeping bags, and you’ll carry your food in
and your non-compostable trash out. There’s a wood cookstove, but in summer,
you may prefer to cook over the outdoor fire pit. A few mattresses and pads are
available; bring your own pads and the cabin can sleep 10 or more. Choose
either summer or winter; visit for a long weekend or a few days during the
week. In summer, you can enjoy a number of swimming lakes. If you prefer
the quiet of winter, there’s an upstairs woodstove for heat. Exact timing of your
visit will be mutually agreed upon with Bernd and his family.
Bonus: DVD of the new documentary, “An Uncommon Curiosity: at Home and
In Nature with Bernd Heinrich,” donated by director Jan Cannon.

Teacher Development Fund
Red Cedar School is all about growth – and that concept doesn’t stop with the
students. As professionals, our staff is always seeking out new ideas, methods,
and strategies to make them even more effective teachers and role models for
RCS students.
However, as is the case at all schools, funding for excellent professional
development opportunities can be hard to secure. While other proceeds of the
Rock ‘n’ Roll Ball benefit the school’s Scholarship Fund, the Committee last
year began the tradition of doing something special to benefit the development
of the TEACHERS -- and through them, of course, the students.
All proceeds raised with donations to this fund tonight will be used to support
professional development opportunities for Red Cedar staff. This could include
attending a conference, development-focused books and materials, or other
opportunities identified by the staff and approved as such by the Board.
Bidding on this item is cumulative. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE WHAT YOU
CAN! Your bid will simply be added to your total at checkout. Thank you!
