Mahaska Health Partnership – Oskaloosa, Iowa Art
Mahaska Health Partnership – Oskaloosa, Iowa Art Consultant – TJ Moberg and Moberg Art Consultation Architect – RDG Project completed Fall 2013 Moberg Gallery art consultant, TJ Moberg worked with the architectural firm, RDG during the design process to choose areas for art that would be the most impactful. Moberg used Iowa artists exclusively, including many he scouted from the area visiting local art festivals and galleries. 18 artists were included and 60 pieces of art were placed through out the new wing of Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Moberg says “It was very important to Jay Christiansen (CEO) and the Mahaska Health Partnership board of directors that Oskaloosa and surrounding communities in Mahaska county be represented in the artwork.” He added, “I visited the studios of local artists and regional art festivals to find artists that fit the aesthetic and values of the hospital and of residents of Oskaloosa and Mahaska county.” “I enjoyed working with TJ helping him find the right lighting fixtures to help enhance the art work. His passion for displaying the art work in the best “light” came through in our discussions and the final product. I think the art work really enhances the overall feeling of the hospital wing expansion. I think it adds a local connection to the community as well as a comforting effect for those visiting or using the facilities.” Frank H. Hoifeldt, Architectural Technician at RDG Planning and Design. The following slides show images of the artwork that were chosen and the process involved in creating them. Main Entrance to Hospital Iowa sculptor, Tom Moberg was commissioned to create one of his largest “Healing Trees” to date for the entryway of the hospital. Tom has created impactful artworks across the nation for the past 30 years and has recently completed projects at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and The James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, FL. Tom’s artwork has been featured multiple times in Healthcare Design Magazine. Design Process Tom Moberg draws directly on to a picture of the space to help clients visualize the completed installation. The sculpture is adhered directly to the existing wall and maintains the same longevity. Connector Hallway Artist team, Karen Strohbeen and Bill Luchsinger were commissioned to create 9 separate artworks representing Mahaska county and Oskaloosa. The artists worked closely with the hospital’s art committee and local residents to select the appropriate buildings, landmarks and scenery. The artworks were printed on Plexiglas and backlit with LED light boxes to create an impactful artwork that can be seen from outside the hospital. Connector Hallway The finished artworks represented Oskaloosa and Mahaska county in many forms including Chief Mahaska (White Cloud), the county courthouse, Indian Hills community college, antique farm equipment, a local Co-op and the town square. Design Process Stohbeen and Luchsinger created numerous proposals including digital renderings. The team worked with the art committee to create an art piece the spoke for and about the community. Mezzanine Thomas C. Jackson painted “Jazz at the Gazebo” depicting a weekly music event held in the town square since 1880. Jackson painted from the photos shown on the right and provided the art committee with many options to choose from.
