Everyone wear your brightest colours and
come ready to party. Music and food...
Enjoy a tropical, fun-filled afternoon with
your loved one in the garden at Coleman.
MUSKOKA
BOAT CRUISE
On Wednesday July 10th, 2 bus loads of seniors left
Coleman to head up to Muskoka to board the Winona11 at
the wharf in Gravenhurst.
There was a lot of loud conversation all the way there, as
everyone was so excited. Some had memories of visiting
Muskoka, some had family there and others lived in
Gravenhurst at one time.
We received a warm welcome and the weather was perfect.
Everyone enjoyed a wonderful sit down lunch, with way
too much food, finished off with home made apple pie from
the local farmers market. We had a tour of the boat while
cruising around the waters of Lake Muskoka. Some
enjoyed staying up top on the deck during the cruise and
others sat below at tables and chatted while looking out the
windows.
The Captain gave a running monologue of the islands,
cottages and special sights along the way.
Great Day! Great Fun!

Pioneer Network Conference
The Village Advisory Team would like to share some exciting news. Katelyn
Kannenberg, our Ward Clerk here at Coleman Care Centre, was selected to
participate in the Pioneer Network’s 13th Annual Conference in August this
year. The conference will be held in Bellevue, Washington at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue.
The Pioneer Network hosts the nation’s largest annual conference dedicated
solely to culture change and features pre-conference intensives, inspirational
speakers, group sessions, and special events. The conference is a showcase for innovative thought and transformative practices in the long term
care culture change movement. The Pioneer Network conference has been
attended by more than ten thousand culture change advocates around the
nation, Canada, and other parts of the world.
Each year, Schlegel Villages selects one team member, family member or
resident from each home to attend the conference. The Pioneer Ambassadors will come back to the villages and share the knowledge they have
learned to make changes towards becoming more resident centered. They
will also complete a creative assignment that will be showcased during the
Pioneer Network Roadshow that will be brought to all the villages sometime
next year.
Katelyn is very excited to attend the conference and cannot wait to share all
the knowledge she will have gained. Look for her article in the September
Newsletter!

A Puppy Poem
Friend for Life
Inspired by “Dodge” the dog
If you’ve never owned a dog
You’re missing lots of fun
A dog can be a friend indeed
I got one for my son
He never had to look for friends
The dog was always there
Ready to protect him
When he went anywhere
His tail was always wagging
His loyalty was true
I highly recommend a dog
A friend for life for you
By Marianne Harvey
Marianne is a resident living at Coleman and she loves to write poems
and create stories. She also enjoys pet therapy visits and was inspired
by Tammy Horvath and her dog “Dodge” who visit every week.

Masterpiece: Wisdom of the Elder
We held our showcase of seniors’ talents on
Friday July 12th and Saturday July 13th
The Recreation Staff did a wonderful job putting together a beautiful
display of photography, stories, art and past hobbies of our talented
seniors. The room was set up like an art museum. The soft, classical
music, special lighting and draperies added a very distinguished look
and feel to the room. The residents are all very proud of their work
and were extremely pleased to see it up on display for everyone to see.
It was a lot of work but definitely worth while when we saw the looks on
the faces of the residents and their families.
The residents and some family members and staff are taking a bus to the
Village of Humber Heights in Etobicoke where their pieces will be on display along with the work from the other Schlegel Villages.
We are having an early lunch and boarding 2 buses at 1:00, wearing our
best formal outfits. There will be a red carpet ceremony to welcome each
of us and then we will have a guided tour of each of the rooms set up for
each category, art, stories, photography etc. Then we
All sit down to a formal dinner, followed by speeches.
We will catch our buses to return home by about 8:00 p.m.
It promises to be a wonderful experience!

Masterpiece Art Gala
Norm Bell talks to Cathy Boxall,
psw, about his memories as a
boxing coach depicted in his photos.
Draperies, candles, greenery, classical music
and inspirational plaques were set up to
display the residents’ art work
Everyone enjoyed the show. The room
was beautiful. We dimmed the lights
and put on lamps and candles. The
classical music and draperies/swags
hanging from the drop ceiling, plus the
large vases of hydrangea and greenery
gave a very elegant feel to the show
room. Even our pictures don’t do it
justice. Everyone was so impressed
they wanted to leave the room set up
indefinitely, but of course we need our
large room for many functions plus it’s
the family room for visiting.
The residents did a wonderful job on
their submissions, working steady for a
couple of months to have their pieces
finished and prepared for the show. The
Recreation Team put a lot of hard work
into this show and were pleased with
the positive response from everyone.
Gord and Coral McIntee were proud
to show their crafts and art, along
with Eileen Foster’s embroidery.
Eleanor Miller was one of the many
residents who attended the show.
Staff, family members and visitors
all voted on their favourite pieces.
Stories and poems written by residents were
plaqued or put in book form and set up on
photo stands for everyone to read.
Residents who took the photography/I-pad
class hung their works from the ceiling.

A Special Guest
We had our monthly birthday party on a hot, Thursday July 18th for our July
babies. Everyone enjoyed listening to and singing along with David and
Margaret’s Karaoke. There was delicious cake and refreshments for
everyone. Coleman had a special guest at the party; MP Patrick Brown
visited the seniors. MP Brown talked about Canada’s progress in the
economic sector, how Canada was doing financially world wide and
happenings in our lovely City of Barrie. Following his talk at the party, he
stopped to chat with team members and other residents around the village,
before leaving for another home in Barrie.
We all appreciated MP Brown’s visit and interest in our home
.
