Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 Library's Access Services area gets major facelift before and after Circulation Desk (Reprinted from the September 15, 2000 issue of 'On Campus') When the ribbon was snipped Sept.7 to officially open the new Access Services area in the University's Main Library, it signified much more than simply declaring a new renovation job finished. In fact Alison Nussbaumer, head of the Access Services Division, says it means at least three things - a better setup for the customers and users of the Library, a better facility for staff to operate in, and, something that's a file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page1.html (1 of 3) [2/9/2009 9:58:45 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 tremendous side benefit, a growing team spirit among all the Access Services staff. Nussbaumer says that's the result of this intensive, yearlong renovation planning process that saw a number of staff get very involved. "The staff took complete ownership of the project," she says. Nussbaumer just moved to her job in July 1999 from a position in the library at Edmonton's Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. She quickly found out that a 1996 review had called for a reorganization of services to create a new "Access Services" unit including Circulation, Reserve, Interlibrary loans and stack management. But more than that, there was also a call for major renovation to the whole area, to make the counters, shelves, computers, reserve stacks - and everything - better for both staff and customers to handle. "The old counters were built before computers," Nussbaumer says, adding that the reserve holdings had already outgrown the small area set aside for them. She says she and her staff began a year ago, in August, carrying out a thorough process of designing exactly what the new facility should look like. They established a "core team" of seven, including a couple of people from the Education library, which recently went through a professional refit. "We met weekly, and we had to meet with University space planning people to get approvals, and then with Facilities Management." She said she and her staff got very good at reading blueprints and "thinking in 3-D." The 20 Access Services staff are thrilled with the result. The large new Access Services work area is out in the open, surrounded by low, inviting counters. They've gone from two shelves before; to 12 specially designed ones now, and they've added important touches - like some 200 lb. load-bearing shelves to hold Interlibrary Loan materials. Also, Nussbaumer beams, "the new, larger Reserve area is wheelchair accessible, and people can not only browse more comfortably through the Reserve stacks, they can even sit at a long counter and use material there, without having to even sign it out." There's also a multi-purpose help desk, for fairly private discussion with library patrons. Moving the Circulation Desk also freed up a sunny window-lined wall, that's now been turned into a bright lounge or study area. And Nussbaumer notes proudly that an old wall that used to hide the open area from sight has been cut way back, opening the whole room to the elevator area. "The whole thing is much more welcoming," Nussbaumer says. But most importantly, the complex project has been tremendous for team-building among staff. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page1.html (2 of 3) [2/9/2009 9:58:45 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 So Nussbaumer is excited, because the project hasn't just given a shot-in-the arm to the facilities - it's taken her staff to a new level of operation. Linda Fritz, the Head of the Reference Department in the Main Library met with the new University Secretary, Gordon Barnhart, in late September. The conversation began with a chat about Gordon’s newly published book, Peace, Progress and Prosperity, a biography of Saskatchewan’s first premier, Walter Scott, published by the Canadian Plains Research Centre. Gordon said that he always thought it would be a thrill to see his own book in a bookstore, and now it’s a reality. What brought you to Saskatchewan, Gordon? I’ve come home. I was born in Saltcoats and left when I was 18 to attend the University of Saskatchewan. I did both a B.A. and an Honours B.A. in history. Later on, I did a Master’s degree in history at the University of Regina. I had always wanted to write a book about Walter Scott. Most of his papers are in the Saskatchewan Archives in Saskatoon. It struck me that Scott would make a wonderful subject for a PhD thesis, so I came back, and I received my PhD in 1998. Are you a library user? During my doctorate my unofficial office was a study carrel on the second floor of the North Wing. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page2.html (1 of 3) [2/9/2009 9:58:47 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 When I was an undergraduate, the Murray Building was the library and when I was working up there I was in quiet and familiar surroundings. I had a routine where I would arrive every day at the same time. Every once in a while another student got there first, but not very often. Have you ever considered being a teacher? I have been a teacher and I loved it. I think I’m in my fifth career right now. After I finished my B.A., I taught high school in North Battleford. After I’d been there for about 5 months, I got a phone call from the Speaker of the (Saskatchewan) Legislature. He asked me if I would consider being the Clerk of the Legislature. The call came in around lunchtime. He told me there was no hurry; I could phone him back around 6! I went to talk to the principal about it. He asked me when the interview was going to take place. When I phoned the Speaker back, he said he’d already interviewed me. I had been involved in the Saskatchewan Youth Parliament about 4 years before. The Speaker used to attend all of the sessions. He and I had dinner together one night. I didn’t hear from him again until he phoned me that lunchtime. Apparently, my interview had taken place at the dinner. While I was in Regina, I taught at the University of Regina Seniors Centre. The students were mostly retired teachers and government workers. They loved the courses because they could speak freely. We had a great time. Twenty-five years later I got back to teaching. When I started my PhD, I was asked if I would teach a political studies class in Canadian government. It was one of the most positive things I did. There were 72 students in the class and I still hear from many of them. During the rest of my PhD I taught in the History Department as a grad student. Now I’m the University Secretary. I don’t seem to be destined to teach. Tell me about the 25-year interruption in your teaching career. Well, I did become the Clerk of the Legislature. I was the youngest clerk in the Commonwealth at the time. I intended to stay for 4 years but ended up staying for 20. The Legislature changed so much during those years. It went from part-time to full-time and now it has a complex committee structure. I saw television introduced in the Chamber. It was exciting to be a change agent. I was asked to let my name stand for Clerk of the Senate and Clerk of Parliament. I agreed, and every once in a while I’d get a call asking me if I was still interested. Finally the Speaker of the Senate (Guy Charbonneau) phoned and said I had to decide now. I wasn’t given any time to think about it. This was during Mulroney’s government. Thirty days later I was in Ottawa. My wife, Elaine, had stayed behind in Regina until our daughter finished her school year. She had to arrange to sell the house, and do the garage sales. Unfortunately I missed all that!!! I went to Ottawa as an outside change agent. I was a westerner. I was hired to create change in a Senate that really didn’t want change. Five years of that was enough. What are you doing now? file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page2.html (2 of 3) [2/9/2009 9:58:47 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 Before I became University Secretary I worked for University of Saskatchewan International for three years. I haven’t cut my ties completely with the program because I’m still on the board of the Yeltsin Democracy Fellowship. I’m really interested in governance, so I’m working on projects with U of S International in Vietnam and South Africa. I believe that people should have a say in the major decisions made in their country. I was involved when these projects got going, and I want to see them bear fruit. I’m interested in governance at all levels. In November, I’m going to Manila to work with people there on governance in their aid programs. I try to balance these activities with my University Secretary commitments. I can’t be away at times when University Council is meeting or during Convocation. I’m also committed to two more books for the Canadian Plains Research Centre. Right now, I’m writing a history of the Saskatchewan Legislature building. The other thing I’m working on is attempting to get the province to honour the places where each of our premiers is buried. There’s a lot of good will for this one. I have to check out historical documents and old newspapers to find out where some of them are. Walter Scott’s grave is in Victoria. It was really hard to find even though we had a map of the cemetery. There are no family members there, so it hasn’t been looked after. I’ve given up trying to guide my own career! Do you think you’ll ever retire? Elaine and I have bought 12 acres of lake front property near Spiritwood. We want to build out there eventually. I can’t imagine not continuing to research, but it would be great to be near a lake. Fortunately for Edna, who didn’t want to get wet, the numbers enrolled in her year made the swimming requirement impossible to accomodate. From 1962 to 1965 Edna worked at Bowman Brothers and studied part time at the University. It was while taking a Business Law class, that she learned of a job as a Library Assistant in the Law Library. She applied in person and was hired the next day. Over the next few years she worked in the Law Library, taking some time off when she and Gordie had their daughter, Brenda, and then returning to part time work in the Library. In 1971 Edna was asked if she would be interested in working in the Engineering Library - a one woman operation located in 2 classrooms in the Engineering Building. She recalls literally running with one book at a time from the circulation, monograph and current periodical room, down the hall to the room where the bound periodical library stacks were located along with copying and mail distribution for the college, climbing a ladder to reshelve the book, and hurrying back to serve library patrons or answer the phone. There were student assistants to help at lunch time. Perhaps this welcome relief led to Edna’s legendary appreciation and file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page6.html (1 of 4) [2/9/2009 9:58:52 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 support for student assistants. "In those ten years I was in the Library before David arrived the Dean and Library Committee members were a lifeline for me – during that time and in all the years since then "the College" has always been so supportive of our Library – members have always been unselfish in their donations – particularly conference proceedings, which would be donated upon return from a conference, and journal subscriptions." Edna reported directly to the Director of Libraries and attended Department Head meetings and remembers when David Salt was hired as the first Science and Engineering Professional Librarian as one of her happiest moments in the Engineering Library. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page6.html (2 of 4) [2/9/2009 9:58:52 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 In 1980 the library relocated to what was originally designed as the air exchange well of the new Engineering wing. This unique space has undergone a number of renovations to improve conditions, including the addition of a skylight. Along with physical changes Edna has watched technology change how research and information is accessed by the library. Huge volumes of indecis and directories have been replaced with online resources, and conference proceedings have shifted from heavy books to tiny cd-roms. Edna used to assist library users by performing long distance, dialup, on-line searches, one database at a time over a 300 baud modem. In recent years she has coached them to do their own searches of many databases licensed by the library over the internet. As well as presiding over several generations of technological change in the Library, Edna has enjoyed serving a couple of generations of Engineering students. It’s not unusual for her to recognize a student because she remembered when the parent was a student or graduate student. Her phenomenal memory for names and children’s names is the envy of all the Engineering Library Staff. A couple of projects which stand out in her memory include assisting Rusty MacDonald in his research for his book, Thorough outlining the history of the Engineering College, and assisting David Male in his research for an internationally recognized study of snow. Over the years Edna earned the respect and affection of many people working and studying in the College of Engineering. On the afternoon of May 31st, her last day of work, the Faculty lounge was filled with well wishers for her retirement party. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page6.html (3 of 4) [2/9/2009 9:58:52 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 Edna is enjoying more time with family and friends now, but still drops by for coffee or lunch with people at work from time to time. She remarked that retirement still feels like she is on vacation. And while she hasn’t logged into EI Compendex since April, she has plans in the next year to upgrade at home to high speed internet to keep up to date. Hubbertz says he happened to see an internet note this past spring that the University of Minnesota library wanted to give away the documents due to lack of space. "We jumped at it," he says -- and the result was the receipt of about 90 cartons of old books and documents, in 40 large mailbags, at a cost of just $1,600 (U.S.) to the Library. David Fox, the Library's Head of Information Technology, says the documents, ranging in date from the 1792 first journals of Lower Canada, to some early 20th century material, are invaluable, "core research material" for anyone studying Canadian political history. Hubbertz says the material may range in value between $100,000 and $250,000. He says the Library will work away at incorporating the materials into its collection, and maybe do restoration work on some of the documents. The Conference opened with a keynote speech by Julia Blixrud, of the Association of Research Libraries, on SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Research Coalition. Blixrud aroused considerable interest, as she explained how a coalition of universities and libraries were supporting the creation of new, low-cost journals in head-to-head competition with high- priced commercial publications. Participants reassembled Saturday morning for a full day of papers and discussion. Tom Steele of Physics and David Salt of the Libraries presented separate, but complementary, papers on the impact of scholarly e-print servers in the sciences. Judith Herz, Chairperson for the Aid to Scholarly Publications Program, Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada, made a spirited defence of the printed word and its place in the university community. The late morning was given over to papers on the transition to electronic dissemination at Statistics Canada, the "Virtual Western Canadian University Library," and to library consortia, presented by Ernie Boyko (Statistics Canada), David Fox (U of S Libraries), and Bob Foley (University of Regina Library) respectively. In a provocative luncheon speech, Vice-President Academic Michael Atkinson challenged the community to reign in the cost of scholarly publishing. In the long run, new standards may place more emphasis on quality than quantity. But the problems of the enormous sunk costs of running a university demand more urgent attention. When will we see cost savings coming out of electronic publishing? And how long can we afford to buy books and journals that sit months and years on library shelves before they are ever read? The afternoon was given over to breakout discussions covering such topics as "Going Electronic: The Pros and Cons of Publishing Online," and "The Rising Cost of Serials: What Can Scholars Do?" The results of these discussions were shared in a final wrap-up session at the end of the afternoon. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/adh271/Desktop/newsletter/volume2/issue2/v2page8.html (1 of 2) [2/9/2009 9:58:53 AM] Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries Newsletter Vol.2 Issue 2 Spring 2001 All in all, it was a stimulating, provocative conference. Librarians and faculty had the opportunity to share views and learn from each other. If anything came out of the conference, it was that the rising cost of journals is only one part of the crisis in scholarly communication, that tools and strategies are available to us now that were not available even five or ten years ago. Above all, the crisis is not the libraries’ problem, it is a problem facing all of us working within the university community. The Conference on the Future of Scholarly Communication was made possible through the generous support of the Office of the President, the Social Science and Humanities Council of Canada, the University of Saskatchewan Libraries, and the University of Regina Library.
