Free Pattern Instructions Split and Spin Pinwheels Quilt The Split and Spin Template is specifically sized to use precut fabric squares or squares cut from fabric yardage. This particular template works with four different sizes of squares that are split into rectangles. Create split patchwork rectangles using 10" x 10", 8" x 8", 6" x 6", or 5" x 5" squares and the Split and Spin Template. Then stitch the split patchwork rectangles together for quilt blocks that pack a visual punch. Be sure to read “Split and Spin Template Basic Instructions” before starting your project. They explain the process used to prepare and cut the squares and assemble the blocks. After familiarizing yourself with the process, proceed with instructions for three delightful pinwheel blocks and the eye-catching quilt to incorporate them into. Note: The following instructions refer to using Layer Cakes or 10" x 10" squares, but 8" x 8", 6" x 6", or 5" x 5" squares can be used in the same manner to create the same block designs, just smaller sizes. 1. Select and prepare fabrics. The most dramatic results are achieved by selecting one light and one dark colored fabric. They can shift during cutting, making the cut shapes less than accurate. To keep the template under control and perfectly aligned, our template has nonslip gripper lines added to the underside of the template. You may consider adding TrueGrips nonslip gripper dots to the top of the template when you are cutting mirror images with the template. Split and trim fabric squares. • Place each fabric square right side up on a rotary cutting surface. • Divideeachsquareinhalf,yieldingtwo5"x10"rectangles. (Or4"x8",3"x6",or2½"x5"rectanglesifstartingwith different sized squares.) 5" 3. Create a Split Rectangle. • Join the paired triangles, right sides together, aligning diagonalcutedgesandends;stitchusing¼"seamallowances. 5" Pair triangles Stitch • Pressseamflat,thenopenortowardthedarkerfabric.Press carefully since this seam, even well starched, is still on a bias. • AligntheappropriaterectangleoutlineoftheSplitand Spin Template, right side up over the fabric rectangle. Insert the rotary cutter blade into the cutting slot and cut the entire length of the diagonal. Wrong side Press seam open Press seam toward darker fabric 4. Position the template so the two slanted lines at the outer template edge flank the fabric triangle edges. • Trimoffthefabricpoints. -2- Split and Spin Pinwheels Blocks and Quilt Instructions The following instructions give fabric squares and cutting directions for each of three quilt block designs. Select the required number of background and contrast fabric squares as noted in the cutting instructions. Learn how to create each block, and then follow instructions for using that block design in a dramatic quilt. You can create two different Pinwheels by simply changing the rotation of each block. 1. Prepare fabric squares and cut in half as detailed in the Basic Instructions. 2. Split and assemble Split Rectangles. • Pairthecontrastandonebackgroundsquaretogether,each facing right side up. Split and trim with the Split and Spin Template, right side up. • Jointhecontrastandbackgroundtrianglestogether.Press. 3. Cutfour4⅞"x9¼"BackgroundRectanglesfromthebackground fabric strip (or the exact size of your Split Rectangles). 4⅞" 9¼" Pinwheel Layout #1 Pinwheel Layout #2 • Stitch pairs of patchwork squares together. 4. Prepare the Pinwheel Block. • Arrange the Split Rectangles and Background Rectangles in pairs as shown. Label if needed. • Stitch the pairs together, attaching each Background Rectangle to the long background fabric edge of each Split Rectangle. • Pressseamsflat,thentowardtheBackgroundRectangle. • Press seams flat, then to opposite sides. • Joinrowstogetherto complete the quilt block. The seam allowances automatically nest with each other. • Presstheseamflat,then open or to one side. • Squareeachpatchworksquare,maintaining¼"seam allowances beyond the interior triangle points. -3- 5. The third Pinwheel Block is just as easy. • ArrangetheSplitRectanglesandBackgroundRectanglesin pairs as shown. Label if needed. • Squareeachpatchworksquare,maintaining¼"seamallowances beyond the interior triangle points. • Arrangethefourpatchworksquaresasshown,rotatingeach. • Stitchthepairstogether,attachingeach Background Rectangle to the long contrast fabric edge of each Split Rectangle. • Pressseamsflat,thentowardthe Background Rectangle. •Completeblockasdetailedonpage3. • Cutsix9¼"widecrosswisestrips.Subcutintoforty-eight 4⅞"x9¼"rectangles. • Cuttwenty-four4⅞"crosswisestrips.Fromeachstrip,cut one13¾"length(Asegment)andone22¼"length(Bsegment) for block sashing. 2. FollowPinwheelBlocksassemblytomaketwelvePinwheel Blocks. AssembletheSplitandSpinPinwheelsQuilttop. • Stitchtheblocksintorows,rightsidestogether.Press seam allowances flat, then in the opposite direction of the previous row. • Stitchtherowstogethertocompletethecenterpanel.The seam allowances will automatically nest with each other. • Pressseamsflat,thentooneside. 5 FinishtheSplitandSpinPinwheelsQuiltbylayering, quilting, and binding, using your favorite techniques. -6-
