Celebrating 100 Years! www.standardbankpa.com Member FDIC WELCOME TO THE 2013 ALL SCOTTDALE FESTIVAL Welcome to the 2013 Scottdale Fall Festival. This year the park, where the festival takes place has been renovated with new sidewalks and vegetation. The park was redesigned with permeable concrete to allow water to infiltrate into the ground. The upgrades to the park is one of many projects that the community can be proud of. The Scottdale Fall Festival has dedicated this program to recognize all of the community sponsored activities. The Scottdale Fall Festival has been around for 39 years. Although the festival has had many names over the last 39 years, the principles never changed. The festival has always been a festival for the community of Scottdale. The idea started with the 100 year anniversary celebration of Scottdale. A group of Scottdale citizens created a celebration for the 100 year anniversary of the town. This group of people then decided to have an annual festival called the Scottdale Coke Heritage Festival. The year was 1974 when the first festival started. The festival would change names several times over the years until its present day name, The Scottdale Fall Festival. The present day name of the Scottdale Fall Festival has been around now for 16 years. This is one of many events that the citizens of Scottdale can be proud of. This festival was created by the community of Scottdale; for the community of Scottdale. Over the last 39 years the festival has attracted people of all ages and helps promote local businesses in our community. This three day celebration has many events such as a dog show, live entertainment, a race, ethnic foods, children’s area, a teen dance, and much more. A list of events, food, and entertainment can be found on pages 4-9. The Scottdale Fall Festival committee thanks you for attending and making this festival bigger and better each year! Erin’s most current endeavor is a creative merge of her writing and vocals with legendary jazz and classical bassist, Virgil Walters of Trio Grande.Within this blend, they introduce fresh ways to honor a diverse and unexpected lineup of music within the jazz tradition. Together, they bring an edgy and musical breath of fresh air. a truly unique merge of the soulful, sultry vocals Erin Burkett has become known to unwaveringly deliver, teamed with a trio of three of Pittsburgh’s jazz greats. Legendary Pittsburgh jazz and classical bassist Virgil Walters imaginative lines and captivating solos together with the innovative, spirited rhythms of Brian Edwards create an exciting foundation. A refreshing sound, seamlessly brought together by the warm, full bodied guitar stylings of Brazilian and jazz guitarist, Eric Susoeff. These diverse influences come together with intense originality in an unexpected lineup of music to honor jazz and popular music.... An edgy musical breath of fresh air! Switch Switch plays an incredible mix of music from rock, to pop to 80s and everything in between. With an eclectic mix of music encompassing R & B, Country, Funk, Motown, Pop, and Rock that captivate the listening audience while performing high-energy dance music and lively party songs that make Metro one of the most unique and entertaining dance bands around. A truly diverse band, Metro’s members each bring unique talents to the stage and deliver high energy shows that make their faithful fans want to dance all night. Metro’s fun-loving spirit and undeniable musical talent come together to give you a fantastic experience that you won’t soon forget. Scottdale Fall Festival Page 6 Abilene Country music group Abilene debuted in the early 1980’s. The band was composed of Herb Humphreys on lead guitar and vocals, Keith Taylor on keyboards and vocals, Larry Miller on bass and vocals, Jay McKnight on acoustic guitar, fiddle and vocals, and Randy Rhodes on drums. Abilene traveled the tri-state area, playing in Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland and recorded two local hits, (You Don’t Need to Need Me Now and Louisiana Feeling). For several years, the band was the opening act for national performers and won a number of ‘Battle of the Bands’ and other contests. One win landed them on the stage of “Jamboree in The Hills” in 1984, which led to a performance on the popular Nashville “You Can Be A Star” television show on the CMT network. Over the past 30 years, and coming and going of band members, Abilene has shared the stage with such greats as Alabama, Ronnie Milsap, The Statler Brothers, Pure Prairie League, Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels, Dr. Hook, Eddie Rabbit, and the Judds. In the past year, original members Herb, Keith and Larry reunited, and welcomed drummer and vocalist Tim Burkhart into the group, combining a great mix of musical talents. PGH Band Meet Shari Richards, Sputzy Sparacino and Tony Janflone Jr., blending their talents in PGH, the area’s newest super group. PGH grew out of a benefit concert Sparacino and Janflone played together in late 2012. What could Janflone do, Sparacino wondered, with a larger ensemble? A few weeks later, at another charity show, Sparacino found himself onstage with Richards. Sparacino says Richards and Janflone signed on almost instantly when the idea was brought to them, even though such collaborations have inherent pitfalls. When three principals are used to being headliners, friction is often an unfortunate and unavoidable byproduct. PGH also features keyboardist Jeremy Olson, bassist George Elliott, drummer Joe Kluchar, percussionist Derrick Edwards and the horn section of Curtis Swift (saxophone), Mark Custer (A) and Bob Matchett (trombone). The group will concentrate on cover songs initially — notably selections by Sam Cooke, the Neville Brothers, Etta James and The Commodores — but is open to writing new material. Dave Iglar Band Dave Iglar Band, “the most entertaining bar band in metropolitan Pittsburgh” (Pgh. Post-Gazette), is an exciting rock and blues group. Ever popular with audiences, Dave Iglar continues to live up to his long-standing reputation of bringing thrilling shows and multi-talented musicians to stages across the region. It’s The Rock-n-Roll Guitarnival! The band, also featuring daughter Andrea on sax, is known for a huge, versatile song list of original material and creative adaptations of blues and rock classics. Dave is widely acclaimed as Western Pennsylvania’s guitar virtuoso and has released many original recordings and performed 1,000s of shows. Formerly of Force Field and Dave & Shari, he has appeared with celebrated musicians such as Roy Buchanan, Susan Tedeschi, Taj Mahal, Dickey Betts, Steve Morse, Robin Trower, Mick Taylor, Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. The Dave Iglar Band plays “Awesome Rock & Blues”--night after night, fans come up to the band and exclaim: “Awesome!” Scottdale Fall Festival Page 7 Platinum Platinum is one of R&B music’s most beloved and consistently popular vocal groups. Platinum was formed in 1999 by lead vocalist Darryl Askew, and his friends Carlo Valotta, Mike O’Leary and John Radko from another local singing group soon joined the group. Platinum performed in a lot of the local clubs in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. Prior to joining with Platinum, Mike and john had also played in the band called the New Memories along with Darryl. Platinum has gone thru several female vocalists along the way to counterpart with Darryl, but it wasn’t until 2002 when Kim joined the band. That’s when things really started to click -- almost like magic. Kim was the former lead vocalist with another well known local Band called the House of Soul. Kim had such a dynamic voice, stage presence, charisma, and the sweetest personality you ever want to meet! Darryl and Kim gelled instantly, the band now had a sound chemistry, their vocal style harkens back to a more genteel era of crooning with their silky smooth voices but yet they can groove and move an audience. As their popularity continues to grow, Platinum has a great appreciation for their loyal fans, and of course they always welcome new ones. Audiences are hungry for great songs with timeless melodies, and you can expect great songs and a stellar performance from this great band…PLATINUM. Fonic The band “FONIC” is comprised of former members of Switch and Shakedown. They are a high energy group of musicians that provide not only an incredible rock sound but are also a visually entertaining performance as well. Between the high energy crowd mingling’s of the lead vocalist, the constant action of the guitarists, as well as the amazingly entertaining twirling and tossing of sticks by the percussionist, the show has proven to be successful in pleasing large crowds at all levels of the performance. While FONIC is a defined Rock Cover Band covering the greatest music of the 80’s, 90’s and today, through experience, they understand the demand of the selection providing a dance atmosphere. The songs chosen are always with the crowd’s participation in mind. All of the members of FONIC have played numerous outdoor family venues and understand the meaning of playing appropriately to the crowds, using the best of judgment when making song selections and editing for content. Members Shawn Kistler - Lead vocals (formally of Switch and 6ft. Symun), Bob Dugan - Lead/Rhythm guitar, vocals (formally of Switch and 6ft. Symun), Joel Sanders - Lead/Rhythm guitar, vocals (formally of Shakedown), Keith Urham - Bass Guitar (formally of Shakedown, Red Edna, and Whiskey High), and Jeff McNaney - Percussion (formally of Shakedown, Dr. Feelgood, and 6ft. Symun) Steve Hawk “Steve Hawk is taking his experience as the front man, singer/song-writer of Pittsburgh’s band, Forgotten Nobody (2005-2008), to his own level. With the success of Forgotten Nobody on local Pittsburgh Radio and myspace.com, when FN went on hiatus after 2008, Hawk picked up the pieces of a life without singing and playing original Rock & Roll. He’s now doing so in a solo Do or Die fashion! Keeping personally sacred songs and experiences in his back pocket for many years, Hawk is now emptying the lint, breaking out solo, acoustic, raw, and real. Stricken with the blues, laced with punk, and feeling the hangover of old rock & roll, Steve has been out in the Southwestern Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio music scenes for 3 years, enjoying the solo acoustic rock & roll lifestyle. Steve Hawk is now enjoying new fans, relishing old- icing the bruises of the past, dusting off his leather jacket and getting ready to bring the swagger and energy of what one man with one guitar can bring. Just like the old days.” Scottdale Fall Festival Page 8 Household Stories Household Stories is a three-piece indie rock band from Greensburg, PA. The band’s second EP titled “Blueprints” made its way onto Hughshows and Drawuslines best of 2012 year-end lists. The band has been performing since 2011, and recently released it’s newest EP called “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken,” which was recored at J Bird Studios in Pittsburgh. Breaker The roots of Breaker Truly go back to 2004, when Dom and Joe began playing in bands together. Nothing really stuck over the years, and the two continued their friendship while pursuing other musical and educational interests. In the waning months of 2011 Dom and Joe found themselves in a position to start anew, with a lot more experience under their belts. Knowing he was close at hand, they invited Nick to jam on lead guitar with them. Quickly they saw what someone with a BA in Music and Guitar can do to kick it up a notch. Nick’s Eric Johnson and J-rock influence meshed perfectly with Joe’s hard rock technicality and Dom’s chaotic-yet melody-driven songs. Together, they generated a world that harkened back to a time when the music scene included names like “Daltrey” and “Jagger.” In search for someone to hold down a bassline, Dom called upon his old co-worker, Chris, with whom he had played only a few open mics. Bringing his progressive musical influences and Theatre/Music college education to the fold, Chris helped create something unique. With the lineup completed, they started practicing. Each practice brought a new level of innovation – it was like watching a lump of hot metal slowly forming it into a perfect weapon, filling their arsenal with songs to unload on an unsuspecting audience. Their first show, in the South Side of Pittsburgh, was a Battle of the Bands. Among the lineup of show-hardened metal core showmen and scream-wielding punks, they clawed their way to second place on their first effort at a live show. Since then, they have been grinding week in and week out to produce a list of songs worthy of first place. Now it’s time for them to show their work– they’re ready to take those songs on the road. While offering youth soccer for the ages of 4 – 13 in the in-house divisions, and 9 – 19 for the traveling divisions, this organization has the privilege of helping to mold the youth of the community into fine young adults, and this is not something that is taken lightly. Whether a player goes on from the club to play at the collegiate level, or never plays soccer again after graduating from the in-house divisions, we hope that each player leaves with the sense of pride and accomplishment, and a heightened self-esteem as a result of playing soccer in our club. We are quite proud of the club’s heritage, and we are looking forward to serving the community for years to come. The club would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the people and businesses within the Scottdale community who have supported us through the years. It is only through the hard work and dedication of volunteers, as well as the financial support of sponsors, that the club has been able to achieve the success it has through the years. Our Kendi Field facility is known for its great fields, and the club is known for the number highly skilled teams that we are able to field – even though we are not one of the bigger clubs in the area. Pleasant to the existing Yough River Trail at Connellsville by means of a bike trail. Out of this brainstorming, came the formation of the Coal & Coke Trail Chapter consisting of community leaders and elected officials from Scottdale and Mt. Pleasant boroughs and the Townships of East Huntingdon, Mt. Pleasant, and Upper Tyrone. Exploratory research resulted in a route developed from the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad line that would establish a trail from Kendi Park in Scottdale to Willows Park in Mt. Pleasant of approximately 5.5 miles. Key grants obtained from the McKenna Foundation and the Commonwealth of PA enabled the Chapter to identify and purchase the needed property from local landowners and then the the work began! Many challenges were overcome as the route was littered with thousands of tires, junked vehicles, and garbage. Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, scout groups, and school students the cleaning of the site was accomplished. Bridges were constructed across both Sherrick and Shupe Runs along with numerous drainage pipes to insure the stability of the trail and safety crossings with signage placed where the trail bisected busy roads. The assistance from Borough, Township, and County workers was invaluable! Finally after a decade of planning, work days, and construction the Coal & Coke Trail became a reality. This recreational resource is used and enjoyed daily and has become a destination for those Heritage Travelers seeking exercise and the solitude the trail provides. Recently the Chapter has created access to Route 31 on the Mt. Pleasant end, developed various trailhead parking areas, and rerouted the trail to take in more of the scenic views of our beautiful resource, Jacobs Creek. Future plans are still in place to extend the trail to downtown Scottdale and West Overton, create a spur to Owensdale, and eventually the ultimate goal, a connection to the Yough River Trail, part of the Great Allegheny Passage! Many hours of work and preparation followed; however the Committee considered it an honor to serve the community in this manner for the present and also for the future generations. The original Book Committee was Sue Killinger, Karen Nicholson, Kathy Zaffina, Don Graft, Bob Miller and Tinky Nist. This group soon included Allan Nicholson, Pete Zaffina, Tim Carson, Tom Killinger and Bud Santimyer who joined as Sue Killinger proposed sponsoring an old-fashioned Community Picnic at Loucks Park. Picnic In The Park became a reality. This year marks our 15th anniversary with some changes in the Committee, but the concept has remained the same. From 2:00 pm and continuing until evening, we offer homemade food, plenty of activities for all ages, music and above all, spectacular fireworks, courtesy of The Scottdale Bank & Trust Co. and Brilhart Ace Hardware. The current active Committee Members; The Nicholson’s, The Zaffina’s, Bud Santimyer, Tinky Nist, Barbara Stern, and Leslie Street, are grateful for all the volunteers and supporting sponsors who make the Picnic In The Park a success. We hope those who follow in the future will continue to keep this tradition on the 3rd Sunday in August for many years to come. Children and parents have enjoyed the activities throughout the summer months. With three different programs running at the library, attendance has reached a new high! We expanded to the parks with readers available to read stories or to listen to children read to them keeping the learning process going through the summer months. Karen Stefl, retired Southmoreland Librarian joined our team and lead a fantastic teen program. Area high school students volunteered and helped with the younger children’s programs. A true community effort was evident all summer especially at the 2nd Annul Bookworm Triathlon! Looking forward to fall and winter, Library Director Patricia Miller is excited to announce a new program for adults and teens called Pushing the Limits. Miller received a grant from the National Science Foundation that will facilitate a program for teens and adults focusing on book talks and discussions that will focus on the basic STEM concepts. Staff is also looking forward to Fall Computer Classes, Fall Book Sale and a second Bookworm Craft Boutique Sale on November 23! As the library celebrates 103 years of service to the community, it is committed to continue to change with the times and meet the growing needs of our community. Scottdale is a very fortunate town to have seven parks within the community. The seven parks are; Loucks, Garfield, Kendi, Barclay, Pittsburgh St, Chestnut St, and Gazebo Park. Some of the park features are; ball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, play equipment, picnic areas, a water sprinkler, and pavilions. Loucks Park in particular, features lights for night time competition at the ball diamond and tennis courts. The Scottdale parks hold many events such as the Scottdale Fall Festival, Picnic in the Park, Olympics in the Park, lunch in the park, and Light up night. Furthermore, a recreation program is offered for area children during the summer months at Loucks Park. Children are given the opportunity daily to participate in making a craft and to take part in a fitness program. Play equipment is also available for use during this time. In conjunction with the Southmoreland School District, a free lunch is also offered as part of the Summer Food Program. Using funds from various grants in 2007 Garfield, Kendi, and Barclay parks were redesigned and new play equipment was installed. The play equipment at Loucks Park was also updated that year. This year the Parks Commission has organized Park Community Project days. The first project was cleaning up Pittsburgh Street Park which was held on May 18th, 2013. The Scottdale Parks and Recreation Commission is looking for Volunteers and Donations from community residents, scout groups, church groups, business organizations and anyone else who would like to provide a helping hand in our 7 parks. This year in June a resolution was passed to protect its youth and citizens from the effects of exposure to tobacco smoke pollution. The use of tobacco products will be strictly prohibited at all borough owned facilities, including all parks and recreation facilities. The Park Commission refers to the Parks as “The pride of our community”. If you are interested in lending a helping hand check the Park Commission Facebook page for specific dates and times. Jacobs Creek Watershed Association Jacobs Creek Watershed Association (JCWA) loves to complete important environmental projects, educate our young people and participate in community events, and we’ve found a great partner for our mission, the Scottdale Borough! From the flood control projects in the early 1970’s that eased severe flooding in Scottdale to the recently completed Gazebo Park improvement project, JCWA and Scottdale Borough have worked together over the years to improve our environment as well as our community. Most of JCWA’s projects in Scottdale Borough create storm water control measures that help prevent heavy rains from rushing into Jacobs Creek and scouring the stream banks, causing erosion and destroying aquatic habitat. The Gazebo Parklet project, which JCWA manages for the Borough, created beautiful and functional storm water improvements including flowering rain gardens and porous concrete areas that absorb rain water. The attractive Gazebo Parklet improvements complement our nearby Scottdale Library Reading Garden project, completed a few years ago. If you’ve seen the new trees thriving in the parking lot behind the Southwest Regional Tax Bureau, they are also part of another JCWA-Scottdale Borough storm water project to control storm water and prevent flooding of the Tax Bureau offices during heavy rains. But we’re not stopping there. Future partnerships with Scottdale Borough include the Green Streets Project that will bring esthetic storm water measures along Pittsburgh Street; green measures at the Scottdale Firemen’s Club; a wetland/outdoor education area at the Southmoreland Middle School and storm water control measures at the Southmoreland High School parking lots. In addition to environmental projects, JCWA enjoys educating Southmoreland students on the importance of clean water. Our annual events include the 9th grade stream evaluation days, where we help the students compare a high quality stream to a poor quality stream that has been degraded by mine drainage and urban pollution. We also help out at the annual 6th grade campout at Laurelville. This year, we helped the kids wade into Jacobs Creek to search for the cool creatures that live on the bottom of the stream. It was an interesting and wet day that everyone enjoyed! JCWA also participates in Scottdale’s annual fun events. Our members volunteer for the Bookworm Triathlon, participate in the Fall Festival and pop all that tasty popcorn for the Picnic in the Park. Stop by our Fall Festival booth at the corner of Pittsburgh and Spring Streets to view some great photos of our projects in Scottdale Borough. JCWA hopes our thriving partnership with Scottdale continues to grow for a better environment and a better community! What was once considered a problem has become a green initiative. Before the green initiative the only answer was to pipe the water away. With help from the Jacobs Creek Watershed Association, DEP and the EPA, the Borough of Scottdale is developing innovative ways to minimize the storm water runoff from Borough parking lots and streets. The Partnership started in 2009 with the construction of the Reading Garden. This garden is located between the Gazebo and the Scottdale Public Library. The design and construction of this garden use stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to mitigate for the runoff. The Reading Garden used porous concrete and a rain garden to help minimize the stormwater runoff from the former street. Another project designed to minimize stormwater was constructed in the public and the private lots adjacent to Mulberry Street. This project was designed to minimize the runoff from the parking lots by collecting and diverting water to the newly planted trees. Recently the Scottdale Gazebo Parklet has had a facelift. Rain gardens, an infiltration swale, and porous concrete are new features constructed in the spring of 2013. The landscaping and stormwater features have reduced the runoff from the parklet to the city stormwater system. Today a minimal amount of water flows from the park to the city’s stormwater system. These stormwater features will store and delay the stormwater runoff from the parklet. In addition, the public can enjoy a newly renovated park. The reason these projects are being built is to reduce the storm surge and improve water quality to Jacobs Creek. The best management practices designed and implemented at these sites collect the stormwater and provide for alternate ways for the water to be recycled into the water cycle. The stormwater controls mitigate for the water by infiltration and evapotranspiration. Evapotranspiration is the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the Earth’s land surface to atmosphere. Some changes will affect the downtown Scottdale area in the coming years. A Green Streets project will be constructed on Pittsburgh Street and adjacent streets. The construction will utilize Stormwater BMP’s to help reduce the stormwater runoff. In addition, the controls will minimize the pollutants from water running off streets and parking lots. If you have any questions or interests in these projects please contact the Jacobs Creek Watershed Association at the Borough office at 724-887-8220 , ext. 3 or at [email protected]. Its mission is to collect, preserve and archive the Scottdale area’s rich cultural, industrial and architectural history for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations. The society owns and works to maintain and restore the Loucks Homestead at 527 North Chestnut Street, one of the original homes in the borough. It is available for overnight stays and small gatherings. Our most recent work focuses on the homestead, with a kitchen renovation project and work on the roof and gables recently completed. Scottdale is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This listing is the first step in preserving our town, once one of the richest towns in America. The founding board initiated the Coal and Coke Heritage Festival and purchased the Peter Loucks Homestead with the proceeds of that festival. It also bought the ground and built the gazebo in downtown Scottdale. We will work with the local government and will help formulate preservation ordinances and raise awareness of the many historically significant properties. We will pursue the preservation of as many of the community’s historic artifacts, stories and properties as possible. We will work with area organizations to promote our beautiful town, with its tree-lined streets and walkable neighborhoods. Our annual events traditionally include a summer porch tour as After the razing, in the late 1960’s the urban renewal plan for Scottdale was well as Christmastime house tours. to raze the structures on the northeast side of Pittsburgh Street and North Broadway; including Grant, Everson, and east side of Spring street. The renewal project was to construct a mall onto the cleared sight. This 1970 image shows the bare landscape that now houses Rite Aid, Scottdale Bank and Trust, and the gazebo. Upon doing so, the Chamber was able to raise funds; coupled with grants, to do projects such as purchase new, decorative light poles and Christmas decorations for downtown. They also were able to donate the Tottie Kiefer walkway and archway. Some of the events they host throughout the year include the Winter Light Celebration, the Easter Egg Hunt, and Lunch In the Park. Once a month, from September to May, a student from Southmoreland High School is chosen to receive the Scottie Scholar award. With this honor, the student is taken to lunch by a member of the Chamber and awarded a gift card for their success, hard work, and achievements. The Chamber also does ribbon cutting for new businesses, sponsors sidewalk sales, and a community yard sale. The Chamber is always open to new ideas and suggestions. They would love to see the organization grow and have more involvement from the community as a whole. There is no need to own a business to volunteer or take part. Individuals are more than welcome to come aboard and join the fun! Please consider joining our efforts to help keep Scottdale a place people love and to make it better.
