REPORT
Building Relationships,
Inspiring Success.
RAMAPO 2014

THE RAMAPO TOOLBOX:
OUR APPROACH TO
CREATING ENVIRONMENTS
THAT SUPPORT SUCCESS
Ramapo is built on the simple belief that
all young people want the same things:
to learn, to feel valued for who they are
and to experience success.
The Ramapo Toolbox helps adults see
challenging behaviors through the lens of
unmet needs and lagging skills, and provides
a set of strategies to help young people
align their behaviors with their aspirations.

Putting the Ramapo
Toolbox to Work
Grounded in a philosophy marked by generosity and
compassion, the heart of the Ramapo Approach is a set
of practical tools for creating environments in which
young people can overcome challenges and experience
success. These tools have been refined through decades
of practice and have been validated by a growing body
of research demonstrating their effectiveness. Ultimately,
however, it is the clarity, accessibility and simple utility
of these tools that has endeared Ramapo to so many
educators and families and made our organization an
unparalleled resource for training and professional
experience in the support of vulnerable young people.
For a growing number of stakeholders, Ramapo has
become the gold standard for equipping adults with the
tools they need to support success among the broadest
possible range of young people. We are proud, but
with a deep commitment to continuous improvement,
learning from the field and being a model of excellence
in all areas, we still have much to accomplish.
On behalf of the entire Ramapo team, we’d like to thank
you for your support. Ramapo’s great strides forward in
the past year would not have been possible without the
commitment and generosity of our partners and donors.
We are excited to see where the Toolbox takes us next…
ADAM WEISS,
Chief Executive Officer
TERI GOLDBERG HOROWITZ,
Board President
Over the past year, we have brought our Toolbox to many
new audiences—from grandparents serving as primary
caregivers to employers hoping to hire young people with
disabilities—and to many new locations—from Baltimore
to Boston and even Bermuda. We have also evolved
internally, reinforcing Ramapo as a teaching environment
in which all staff members strive to model, teach and
coach the language, behaviors and skills that we promote
to others.

RAMAPO TRAINING
Training teachers and youth-service
workers to transform classrooms
and after-school programs into
environments that foster success
for all children.
“Everywhere Ramapo worked in Newark, there
have been requests for more training. Because
Ramapo coaches were right there in the building,
they had the chance to establish relationships
with staff members in the schools.”

for over 10 years. Ramapo’s group facilitators are
creative, extremely child friendly and incredible
at using groups to foster a sense of teamwork

TEEN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Offering summer camp internships
to help older teens build their
confidence and self-sufficiency.
“I’ve learned things like being to my job on time and
remembering to set a good example for the younger kids.
I’ve learned to not get stressed when campers behave
in challenging ways—to just take a breath and use
deescalating strategies like saying, ‘If you can be calm,
we can have a positive time with another camper.’”

“I run a large organization, and I am convinced that
a lot of what I practice as a manager came from
my experiences working at Ramapo. Some things
are universal and span all ages: things like the
power of positive reinforcement, or why people
seek attention with certain behaviors.”

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
IN 2014, Ramapo completed
construction on two new buildings
on our Rhinebeck, NY campus.
THOMASES HALL
Thomases Hall is a residential space for
participants and staff members in the
Staff Assistant Experience, Ramapo’s
transition-to-independence program for
young adults who face challenges.
In this program, Staff Assistants live
side-by-side with typically developing
peer mentors who serve as role
models and friends. The building
provides these young adults with
opportunities to socialize, to live and
work closely with others and to build
essential life skills.
SUSAN McADAM PAVILION
The Susan McAdam Pavilion is a
multi-purpose meeting center that
visiting school, business and
community groups and organizations
may utilize during their time at Ramapo.
Like Thomases Hall, this building has
allowed Ramapo to keep pace with the
demand for our services and provides
a space for individuals in Ramapo’s
programs to communicate, collaborate
and continue developing strategies to
promote success for all young people.

“As we looked to develop new partnerships,
Ramapo was appealing because of their ability
to provide a variety of services, from technical
assistance to direct service. In order to have
any measure of success when working with
students in temporary housing, you must
have committed and knowledgeable individuals
at all levels of support. Ramapo has been
committed, knowledgeable and passionate
