At the Preucil School, we also understand ups-and-downs of music—and of life—sometimes whether we like it or not. Suzuki training is life training 2009-2010 Board of Trustees Ronald Reed, President Doris Preucil, Secretary Sarah Anderson Christie Fesling Tom Goedken Diane Hedlund Becky Hegeman Jim Meehan Susan Mims James Phelps William Preucil Ann Siochi Suzanne Summerwill Sandra Thorington Madeline Windauer Thomas Wolle Sonja Zeithamel Preucil Guild Sandra Thorington, President Jason Aird Janet Bennett Becky Crutchfield Lillian Davis Christie Felsing Michael Hovland Jim Hussey Heather Kaldjian Rosanna Kao Gunhee Kim Samuel Kwok Doris Preucil William Preucil Kristen Rummelhart Dwight Schumm Diane Scott Anne Stapleton Barry Westemeyer Kineret Zabner Sonja Zeithamel Committee Members David Lacina, Building Brad Langguth, Finance 2 In 2008, we shared in the statewide pianissimo associated with the most serious flooding in Iowa’s history, accompanied by our nation’s gravest economic crisis since the Great Depression. By 2009, the floodwaters had receded, but our economy remained stalled—and yet we orchestrated the thunderous fortissimo of “A Night in Vienna,” raising more than $39,000 for scholarship students and our operating budget. This past year, two years after the onset of the “Great Recession,” we were forced to make significant sacrifices—cutting our budget, foregoing salary adjustments, and trimming programs. These were measures no one welcomed, but that were necessary for us to secure our financial foundation for the long term. As we consider our recent past, we are hoping for a “mezzoforte” short-term future—perhaps not quite as booming as in some years, but a clear change in direction that better reflects the extraordinary commitment of the entire Preucil community. Our mission is simple: “Suzuki training is life training.” Despite the challenges “life” may present, we take great pride in knowing that year-in-and-year-out the Preucil School provides hundreds of families the absolute best musical instruction available anywhere, enabling children to grow in their musicianship and as maturing young adults. In keeping with the “dynamic” spirit of this letter, the members of both the Board and Guild gratefully thank you for contributing to the “crescendo” of success that is the Preucil School of Music. Sincerely, Ronald R. Reed Sandra Thorington Board of Trustees President Guild President A n n u a l R e p o r t 2 0 0 9 - 2 0 1 0 Mission & Vision Statements Mission T he Preucil School of Music provides excellence in music and early childhood education based on the Suzuki philosophy of instruction. Vision T he Preucil School of Music is dedicated to the development of ability in all children. We teach according to the philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki, who has proven that particular talents are not inborn, and that all children can develop their abilities in music and other areas to a high level if they learn in the manner that they learned to speak their “mother tongue.” The Preucil School offers excellence in early childhood education and musical instruction for students of all ages in a caring, nurturing environment. It helps parents and children to share in the learning process, serves as a center for involvement in varied early childhood and musical activities, and attempts to create a rich musical and educational environment in the community. The Preucil School believes music training is life training, of equal importance to all children regardless of economic status. It aims to keep tuition affordable, and offers aid to those students in need of assistance who demonstrate a desire to learn. Doris Preucil directing Espressivo Strings at the Annual String Concert A n n u a l R e p o r t Harp student Ava Otoadese 2 0 0 9 - 2 0 1 0 3 From the Director Dear Friends, T he 2009-10 school year was bittersweet. Due to the struggling economy, the Preucil School’s endowments lost considerable ground. In response to the resulting economic pressures, we cut our budget, eliminated faculty and staff raises, and restructured our program offerings. Despite our challenges, there were many bright spots to celebrate. In November, our Board of Trustees and Guild hosted “A Night in Vienna” at the Coralville Marriott, raising more than $39,000 for our school’s operating budget. A special “thank you” goes out to the members of the Board and Guild, local artists and to the co-chairs for making this community event such a success. Because of the personal commitment of so many individuals, we were able to maintain funding for financial aid, allowing most students in need of assistance to continue their musical studies. Throughout the year, our faculty and students collaborated to present extraordinary recitals and concerts. Our studios were filled with “ahhh” moments as Preucil students developed their skills, and many of our students had the opportunity to share their talents at the local, state and national levels. The accomplishments of this past year, and our steadfast determination to move forward, demonstrate the importance of coming together, embracing change, working hard and staying positive no matter what the circumstances. We are grateful to everyone in the Preucil community, and thank you for your continued support of our school and its mission. Sonja L. The purpose of this event was to raise funds to help defray deficits in future budgets until the weakened economy and deflated endowments could rebound. We are so pleased that the evening was a big success. Preucil Guild Chair, Sandra Thorington, and Guild member Lillian Davis chaired the event. Ticket sales totaled over 300; the event was supported by 16 sponsors; 53 students performed during the evening; and approximately 100 volunteers made this event a reality. The evening’s profit was $39,753.05. The positive impact of this event will be felt on the 2010-11 operating budget, as the Board of Trustees voted to apply a portion of the proceeds to help minimize the tuition increase and remove the faculty/staff salary freeze. We can’t thank people enough for their support of this beautiful, festive evening. It was fun seeing Preucil School families and friends, both old and new, come together on behalf of the Preucil School of Music. We were honored by your attendance and continued support of the school.
