Toys for Tots sign-up mid-November
Individuals in Milwaukee Co. may obtain a Toys for Tots registration letter that will allow them to pick up free toys for their
children later in Dec. To register, bring ID & proof of address.
The letters will be available on a 1st come/1st served basis
1-4pm Nov. 14-16 at Salvation Army, 1645 N. 25. There are a
limited number of letters, so it’s best to go on the first day. After
picking up the letter in Nov., you’ll go back later, at an appointed
time, to complete the registration, and then a 3rd time to pick
up the items, usually the week before Christmas. Parents may
register children through age 15. If you are a member of a family
center or have a social worker, it’s preferable to go through them
or MPS, instead of this sign-up. See Waukesha info on p. 19.

Nature can
change your life
A column by
HOPE Network
founder
Gail Grenier Sweet
Nature is all around us, even in an urban setting. I fell in love with
nature when I was a child, playing in a vacant lot on the northwest
side of Milwaukee. We had our own world of fun playing on and
under a billboard, with scrub trees all around us.
I am finishing a book about local families whose lives have been
changed by their connection to the Urban Ecology Center. The UEC
has brought people together through the love of nature, and thus
transformed neighborhoods in Riverside Park, Washington Park, and
Menomonee Valley. This summer, HOPE Network’s mothers and
children enjoyed two wonderful family canoe outings at the Washington Park lagoon, hosted by the Urban Ecology Center. Thanks to
the generosity of the UEC and the Christ Child Society, the outings
were free to our families. HOPE board members Nadiyah Groves (on
left in photo below) and Pam Oberg-Sutton coordinated the outings.
The working title of my book is Milwaukee Wild: Young People
and the Urban Ecology Center. I’ve interviewed 16 people age 15
through 40, and their words form the bulk of the book. Involvement
often starts with summer camps or Young Scientist clubs after school.
At age 14, they become volunteers. Volunteers become interns and
often go from there to jobs with the Center.
I interviewed Katrina Young-Harris, a widow whose sons found
fun, volunteer work, and employment at the UEC. When Katrina fell
into a deep depression, her sons brought her to the Center. Katrina
was 39 years old when I spoke to her. (She was delighted to learn I
was the founder of HOPE; she had received a crib from us and enjoyed some of our activities!). Here’s her story, in her own words:
Before the Urban Ecology Center became a part of my life, I
was depressed, locked up in the house, hurt, afraid, scared. I didn’t
want to have anything to do with people.
Here’s why. My house had got broken into while we were in it.
I opened my eyes and saw the man standing over my bed, with my
television in his hands. My car got stolen. And I was just so disgusted. I was also going through things with my landlord and I was
staying in a dump. I was very angry with the world.
I’m a single mother of three. My daughter is 21 and Donald and CJ
are 13 and 14. My boys loved me so much, they saw that I was in this
deep depression. My house was dark – I didn’t want any light in the
house. I barricaded the doors and windows. They asked me to come
out and go to the UEC.
My first outing with the Center was a field trip with my sons to
Sheboygan to a science fair. We were walking around, observing different experiments. Some of them we could interact with. They blew
up stuff. We walked on corn starch. It woke up something in me, but
even more so it was my kids caring so much about me to say, “Hey
look, you can’t continue, locking yourself up in the house like this.”
It got me out. I think I had more fun than they did.
My boys have literally grown up in the eyes of the Center. I trust
people at the Center with my boys. I don’t care where they take them,
I know they’re not going to hurt them. They’re in a safe place.
I went to pick my sons up from a field trip, and me and this janitor
had an argument about urban kids don’t like science. He said, “There
wasn’t no black kids on no field trip with no UEC.” And I’m like,
“Are you serious? I’m going to show you because I’m going to make
them wave at you when I pick them up.”
And he was so shocked and surprised to see my boys there.
Instead of my sons getting in trouble and hanging out with the
knuckleheads in the neighborhood, they have the UEC to go to. They
had went on many, many field trips, they had went camping, stuff that
I couldn’t afford with my wildest dreams. The Center paid for everything. And so my way of giving back was becoming a volunteer.
After I got involved I could see a change in my life. It gave me a
reason to get out and want to be around people again. I finally wanted
to do something to make things better instead of complaining and
crying about it. And the boys are more open with me. We talk about
almost everything, especially things about nature, like insects. If I
see something and I don’t know what it is, I’ll ask them. They tell me
– especially the bird thing. They know them by heart.
I spoke at two of the UEC solstices. This past one, they raised
$250,000. When I got off the stage telling my story of how I became
a part of the Center, I don’t think anybody had a dry eye in the house,
which was lovely because that’s my way of giving back.
I feel like I’m the poster child for the UEC. I’ve got a huge smile
and I’m not depressed anymore. Now I’m an intern. The stipend is
not much, but the experience outweighs the pay.
I’m a widow. My husband died in 1999 and he was a veteran. I get
his pension and his Social Security for myself and the two boys. So
my salary here at the UEC is like a supplement.
My job at the Center is nothing like the job I had before, at a drugstore; I had some times where
I wanted to pull out my hair
at the store. But here, I come
in happy and I go home happy. I don’t mind being here, I
don’t mind helping.
I like to plant at home. I
built my own 8x10 ft. garden
box and I got peppers and
greens and tomatoes. I did it
myself. I used UEC equipment plus lumber I bought.
I have been telling young
kids that there are some cool
and amazing things you can
find out about nature...the
Urban Ecology Center will teach you all you need to know. All you
have to do is be willing to learn, because it’s here for you, and we’re
an open community center, so come join us!
Since UEC, I’ve been getting out of the house more than I ever had
before. Those were some deep dark times for me and it was like the
sun just shined in and said “Girl, you’ve got to get up, you’ve got to
do something different, you can’t wallow in it, you’ve got to get out
of it.” And that’s exactly what I did.
I think that nature will help mold and shape young people’s career
path, because it’s done that for my boys. Donovin wants to be an
oceanographer and Donald wants to be an ornithologist. They didn’t
want that before they started being a part of the Center.

My name is Nakia Harris and I am a single mother of two
daughters: Soterriah, 14, and Ashley, 6. My daughters are my
motivation for everything I do. I want to always be a positive
role model in their lives.
Ashley attends ballet classes and both of my daughters are a
part of the praise dance teams at our church Berean Family Worship Center.
I am attending University of Phoenix, working towards my
bachelor’s degree in psychology. My long-term goals are to become a child psychologist and open a daycare for children with
autism.
My biggest inspiration was my grandmother. She always
taught me to do my best no matter what life throws at you. She
was very compassionate about helping others which is a passion
of mine as well.
Being a single mother is a struggle; however I am able to overcome many obstacles through prayers of my own and those of
others. When not in school, I enjoy attending church, reading,
and spending quality time with my daughters.
My advice to other single mothers would be not to give up on
your dreams. Trust that things will work out in your favor if you
believe. Those sleepless nights doing homework, attending functions for your children, working long hours will all be worth it in
the end. Just stay the course. Always believe in yourself even if
nobody else does.

Grant winner: Imani Ryan
If I were asked to name the most significant influencing factors on my
life, my accomplishments, and my goals, I would say, without a doubt: believe in yourself and have a positive attitude. I wholeheartedly believe in the
laws of the universe: you get back what you put out there. I don’t have time
to waste on negative thinking.
My name is Imani Ryan, and I am a single mother of two extraordinary
boys – a five-year-old and a seven-month-old.
My employment background is in both the healthcare arena as a CNA,
and in the clerical/office environment in collections, billing, and general
office assistant.
As the years went by, I came to the realization that I didn’t want to stay in
those low-paying, unrewarding jobs. With a smile on my face that matched
my determination, I decided to go back to school.
I was going to have it all, and I was going to make a better life for myself
and my family.
I am currently enrolled at MATC in the liberal arts degree program. In the
spring of 2017, I plan to transfer to UWM to complete my bachelor’s degree
in psychology. After that, I hope to move to Arizona and enroll in Arizona
State University’s master’s degree program for applied behavior analysis.
I want to work with children and adults that suffer from behavioral issues
such as autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.
My advice to my fellow single mothers would be to first believe in your
inner strength and always seek out and find the positive in all situations.
You can achieve anything and overcome any obstacle. All you have to do is
believe in yourself first.

Gramma Duty
A note to single
grandmothers...
By Pamela Oberg-Sutton,
a.k.a. Grammy Pammy
My HOPE Network
“family”
When I graduated high school in 1974, my family decided to move
to northern Wisconsin. I was young and in love, and wanted to continue to live my life in the big city of Milwaukee. I met my husband,
and we were doing our own thing. We hoped for a family one day like
many young couples do.
In 1979, I had my first daughter; in 1982, I had my second daughter. Also in 1982, HOPE Network was founded.
In 1983, my husband James died from leukemia. I was now a
young single mother.
I had two daughters to care for, a nine-month-old and a three-yearold. I had a sister in West Allis, but most of my family lived in northern Wisconsin. By the grace of God, my landlords, Joe and Bonnie
Campbell, babysat while I continued my education.
I have always been a private person, kept to myself, and did what
I had to do. I chose not to move north by my family, but carry on
and move forward. I did not want to be a burden. I worked hard, I
stumbled, but I always managed to get back up, dust off, and get back
into the ring, so to speak.
In 1984, HOPE became my new family. They did not know my
history, my background, or how I ended up at HOPE, but they were
now our secret family, and I am to this day extremely grateful. (Pat
Byrne, you were the new secret mom-figure in my life)
There were Christmas parties, potluck dinners, outings, and monthly meetings. The kids were cared for and I could sit down and breathe
for a few minutes. I so looked forward to the meeting!!! There were
educational speakers that came in, it was wonderful….We even won
a microwave oven one year!!!
Over the years, the girls grew up and I faded into the background.
I still picked up the Network News, and continued to promote HOPE
Black Nativity by
Langston Hughes
Milwaukee’s newest holiday
musical tradition tells the story
of the nativity through a combination of African American
scripture, poetry, dance, and
song. 7:30pm Dec. 1-3 and Dec.
8-10; also 2pm Dec. 3-4 and
Dec. 10-11. Tickets start at $35.
Discounted Wed. previews
will be offered to organizations
to make event accessible to all. Last year, the HOPE office alerted
the dues-paying HOPE Network members of such a preview night,
and some mothers attended for free! One of the perks of membership
-- email blasts with info you can use. Vogel Hall, Marcus Center,
State St. www.marcuscenter.org/residents/black-arts-think-tank/
as much as I possibly could.
In 2013, I wrote HOPE a letter, and asked to be on the board. They
accepted my application. I always felt I had something to offer, and I
wanted to help other young mothers.
Now I am a single grandmother, raising three grandchildren. One
of my daughters passed away, as well as my sister. We continue to
live in Milwaukee, a city I love, and we continue forging on with our
HOPE Network family. Grandson Cortez is pictured on page 1; we
had a blast canoeing with other HOPE Network families in July.
This is not a story for sympathy, but to talk about the need to help
others. Raising children is extremely hard! Raising any children on
a limited income is even harder! But it can be done with resources
such as HOPE Network.
I’m able to plan each weekend with fun and inexpensive things to
do, using this news magazine and the bulletins they mail to members.
I keep my magazine close, and use it to help others.
HOPE Network is alive and well, and I wish them many years of
success in helping young single mothers and grandmothers.
I hope to meet you all at the GALA -- October 7!
