Watch Out, Good Old Boys of Drag Racing, Here Come the Good
Watch Out, Good Old Boys of Drag Racing, Here Come the Good Old Girls. Motorsports competition has always been dominated by men. There are some female participants in some disciplines, like Indy Car, but in professional motorcycle racing no women have become serious competitors or champions yet. There is one huge exception to this, Pro Stock drag racing. In this highest level of motorcycle speed competition, where bikes cover the quarter mile in less than 7 seconds at almost 200 miles an hour, it is possible to say women have been almost dominant. Currently, the 2007 series has been headed by two women, Angelle Sampey, and Karen Stoffer. Angelle has three national NHRA championships to her name, Karen has 5 wins to her credit. There are also several women who run cars as well near the top of the game. Now there is a new face in the Pro Stock Motorcycle crowd, Peggy Llewellyn. Riding for the KK Racing team, this is her second time around competing in Pro Stock. She was the first African American woman to compete in Pro Stock in 2001. With new team Karl Klement Racing campaigning a Buell, she has been competitive right off the line. Peggy started racing when she was very young, competing against her brother on pocket rocket mini bikes. From there she rose up the ranks of drag racing steadily over the years. She qualified for three NHRA rounds in 2001, and was recommended to the KK team by George Bryce, a well known drag racing instructor and coach. In a sport that measures wins and losses in thousandths of a second, the performance of KK Racing and Peggy has been very impressive. The absolute quarter mile record for a Pro Stock motorcycle is a 6.901 second pass, and Peggy’s best to date is a 7.001, literally 1 tenth of a second behind. All it will take is some more experience, and time for the team to jell together, and they are sure to be competing for the top spots in the NHRA. Motion Pro is proud to be a sponsor of KK Racing. Drag racing may be the most demanding form of motorsports in terms of maintenance and frequent tear downs, and Motion Pro supplies KK with the tools they need to make their lives easier in the pits and at the shop. Peggy is a promising young talent, and charismatic as well, She always has time for the fans, which makes her a great representative for Motion Pro. Keep an eye out for when the NHRA tour is coming to a racetrack near you, and head out to see this amazing young woman and her team in action. Tell ‘em Motion Pro sent you.
