6th Edition of the Brazil Film Fest at The Royal.
We are honored this year to bring to the Toronto public a selection of 10 films
celebrating the 20 years of RioFilme. It will be four colorful days as is the city of
Rio de Janeiro.
As this year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of one of the greatest Brazilian
writers, Jorge Amado, and have the great pleasure of screening at opening the film
“Captains of the Sand. “ Cecilia Amado, the granddaughter and director of the film,
will be a special guest attending the festival.
To end the festival, we will bring especially for the festival a concert by Pedro Luís,
from Rio de Janeiro, “Tempo de Menino”. It will be an unforgettable evening filled
with his infectious rhythm, and greatest hits such as Pedro Luís e a Parede and
Monobloco, and other compositions from his solo career.
We would like to thank the CEO of RioFilme, Sergio Sá Leitão and his team, the
Communications Subsecretary of Rio de Janeiro State, Ricardo Cota. Our staff
members, Chris, Eric, Hélène, Bárbara, Yuri, Clarissa, Carlos, Angie, and the team
of volunteers all who have made this festival a huge success.

The Brazil Film Fest is in town again. The 2012 edition counts, once more, with the full support
of the Consulate General of Brazil. The Festival thus consolidates its important role as a
comprehensive display of the Brazilian Cinema industry.
For many of you who have not lived as long as I have, and for most of our Canadian friends,
the word industry may seem somewhat out of context. The fact is however that since the
poetic exploits by Mario Peixoto in the 1930 “Limite” (Limit), Brazilian movies have evolved in a
remarkable way throughout the golden decades (1930 to late 50’s ) of the “chanchadas” (popular
comedies, many of them musicals) which brought Carmem Miranda and so many others great
names front stage.
The following years of innovation (“a camera in your hands, an idea in your mind”) of “Cinema
Novo” (New Cinema), in the 60’s and 70’s, inaugurated by Glauber Rocha and his fellow “angry
young men” deeply concerned with social inequality and truth redemption, would bring about an
industry as diverse and creative as the Brazilian people.
The Brazilian movie industry is capable of thrilling or moving you; of making you smile or make
you get serious. It is capable of making you daydream, or wake you all of a sudden to full
consciousness.
Brazil Film Fest’s extensive yet inclusive showcase of that industry will prove you that.

The 6th Brazil Film Fest celebrates the incredible strength of the Brazilian culture and the enormous
vibrancy of its art, music, and film scenes. These passions are common to all cultures and the
film fest offers a window for Torontonians to learn new ways of understanding our everyday world
through one of the many different cultures that contribute to Toronto’s celebrated diversity.
As Toronto benefits from a growing Brazilian community, the influence through food, art and music

this year’s festival and I am thrilled that this event continues to grow every year.

RioFilme / Celebrating 20 years
of successful films made in Rio
RioFilme is honoured to be the main focus at the 6th edition of Brazil Film Fest.
The festival is doing a very important job in promoting Brazilian cinema and making
our recent films available to Canadian moviegoers. 2012’s program is a celebration
of RioFilme’s 20th anniversary, with 10 films produced and/or distributed by the
company. And made in Rio.
RioFilme is an equity and P&A investment company owned by the City of Rio. Our
main goal is to establish Rio as Latin America’s main center for cinema, TV and
new media production and distribution. We invest in projects by companies based
in the city – including new movies, TV series, festivals, awards, training programs
and movie theaters.
Created in 1992, RioFilme invested in more than 300 films, like “Central do Brasil”,
by Walter Salles, and “Tropa de Elite 2”, by José Padilha, among many others.
It was completely revamped in 2009, turning into a more effective and profitable
company. The audiovisual industry in Rio is growing fast, and RioFilme is proud to
be one of the key factors behind it.

Rio de Janeiro in the view of its residents
It is with great pride that the state of Rio de Janeiro brings to the Brazil Film Fest
the feature Peace in Rio (5 X Pacification). This is a rare opportunity to introduce to
the public in Canada a documentary that shows how is the actual situation of the
public security in Rio, on the verge of major international upcoming events like the
2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The objective of this documentary is to showcase the point of view of four
filmmakers that reside in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, regarding the procedure that
the state government named as “pacification,” which is a recapture by police of
urban spaces occupied by drug dealers through the UPP - Unidades de Polícia
Pacificadora (Pacifying Police Units). Wagner Novais and Rodrigo Felha (resident
of Cidade de Deus), Luciano Vidigal (From Vidigal), and Cadu Barcellos (Complexo
da Maré) show in five episodes advances and contradictions of this process, by
listening to authorities, residents, and former drug traffickers.
The result of this onslaught film makes a decisive contribution to a debate that
is important not only for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, but especially for the world.
After all, the fight against drug trafficking and its social ramifications, economic,
and political struggle is one that concerns us all. And the Brazil Film Fest offers a
privileged stage for the promotion of this debate promoted by those to whom it
matters most: the slum dwellers themselves.

Based on the police records of a famous bandit in São
Paulo, the film tracks the rise of an enigmatic pillager of
luxurious residences whom the tabloids have named for his
technique of using a red flashlight to illuminate his female
victim´s faces, while talking to them before proceeding to
rape and kill them. This is one of the key works of the
Cinema Marginal. The film combines western, detective
story, documentary, musical, comedy, science fiction, and
radical politics, in the vein of Godard´s “gangster films”.

The establishment of the “Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora“ (which translates roughly as “Police Unit with a Mandate to
Pacify”), or UPP for short, was the first step towards consolidating a new security policy in the federal state of Rio de
Janeiro. The declared aim is to occupy territories in the favelas controlled by the drug Mafia and thus to liberate the
inhabitants. The immediate success of this measure triggered debate throughout the country. 5X Pacificação (Peace in
Rio) is a documentary directed by four young filmmakers native from Rio’s Favelas.

provocative costumes, and banana-bedecked turbans.
She became an international sensation, and one of
Hollywood’s biggest stars. The film is the intimate saga of a
show-business legend who began life in an impoverished
family in Portugal, was raised in Rio de Janeiro, and rose
to fame first in Brazil and then in Hollywood. Her success
came with a price-tag: she was caught between being a
“real” Latin American or being Hollywood’s version of one
-- with all the fame and money it would bring. Her star
would shine brighter and brighter, but at the expense of
her own identity and finally, her life.

Pedro Luís presents his first solo work: Tempo de Menino
The repertoire of the concert features songs written by Pedro Luís with various partners: “Nas Estrelas” (with Sergio
Paes), “Crise” (with Ivan Santos), “A Medida do Meu Coração” (Ricardo Silveira), and “Tá?” (with Roberta Sá and Carlos
Rennó). In the title track “Tempo de Menino,” the artist honors the neighborhood of Tijuca, in Rio de Janeiro, where he
was born and raised. The song “Menina do Salão de Beleza” (written with Beto and Rodrigo Valente Cabelo), which
debuted in June on the soundtrack of the hit Brazilian primetime soap opera “Avenida Brasil” is also in the repertory
of Pedro Luís’s Toronto concert. The song “Bela Fera,” composed by Pedro Luís, which is the opening theme of the
miniseries “As Brasileiras” (Globo TV), is also part of the show.
Besides the songs of the album “Tempo de Menino,” the concert also features hits of the artist’s career with the band
Pedro Luís e a Parede, like “Soul” and “Caio no Suingue” (from the 1997 album “Astronauta Tupy”). In addition, the songs
“Noite Severina,” recorded with Brazilian icon Ney Matogrosso, and “Miséria S.A.” (a hit song recorded by the band O
Rappa) will also be presented. Plus, Luís will bring back “Incêndio,” a track from the 80s when he used to be a member
of the band Urge.
