William Cook - Cook Defence Systems
Cook Defence Systems a World Class Company World Class principles A William Cook company “I am proud of William Cook. I built it up almost from scratch. To me the letters WC stand for “World Class”. I believe we are, and we can prove it to our customers.” Andrew Cook CBE Chairman “Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. ” The Cook guiding principles. William Cook is a large UK-based engineering company. It started as a steel casting manufacturer and steel castings still form the basis of 99% of William Cook’s products. But William Cook has advanced far beyond the classic low-tech metal basher. The bulk of William Cook’s products now are sophisticated components, assemblies and systems for a huge range of applications. William Cook prefers to design and manufacture its products in-house. This retains control, and reduces reliance on sub-contractors. To assist this, William Cook has substantial design and R&D resources to support its factories, which themselves include large and modern machine shops and testing establishments. William Cook is a global leader in the design and manufacture of track and running gear for armoured vehicles, and the main supplier of armoured vehicle track to the British Army. Cook Defence Systems is responsible for the design, development and sale of these track systems. The company has developed a comprehensive range of single and double pin tracks, supplemented by tracks made under licence for Diehl Defence Land Systems. William Cook factories have manufactured track for armoured vehicles for over 70 years. Today, all track manufacture takes place at one purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility. William Cook is also a trusted supplier of cast armour and structural parts for military platforms, and an expert manufacturer of extreme specification components for military aircraft and missiles. 1 World Class tracks for British fighting vehicles 1. 2. 3. 4. © Crown Copyright 2013 © Crown Copyright 2013 Cook Defence Systems is the main supplier of armoured vehicle track to the British Army and to users of British-made vehicles worldwide. 1 Warrior Cook Defence Systems designed the TR60 double pin track to meet the specific requirements of the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. The track has been fitted to all variants of FV430 since the vehicle entered production, and William Cook is the only manufacturer approved by the vehicle design authority. British CVR(T) vehicles have also increased in weight to meet operational demands. In response, Cook Defence Systems has developed ‘bigfoot’, replaceable pad, and double pin variants of this track. These variants have all been successfully trialled on Cook Defence Systems’ own CVR(T) vehicles at the British Army’s Armoured Trials and Development Unit. The British Army has upgraded many ageing FV430 vehicles to Bulldog standard to offer increased power and protection. Cook Defence Systems has met the corresponding increase in weight with a double pin track that is also suitable for the widely-used M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier. 3 World Class tracks for the world’s fighting vehicles 1. Andrew Cook’s motto is ‘Perseverantia Obstinatioque’ – which, translated from the latin, means ‘persistence and determination’. This is carried on his personal coat of arms which, as a Commander of the British Empire, he is entitled to have. This same motto encapsulates the ethos of the William Cook group. Originally from a family of Nottinghamshire farmers, William Cook, the great great grandfather of the present Chairman Andrew Cook, walked to Scotland and set up a saw factory in Glasgow in 1840. It survived a bank failure and in 1883 a small factory was started in Washford Road, Sheffield, making crucible steel castings for collieries. The Glasgow works was handed over to relatives by marriage in the early 20th century and from 1902 William Cook’s two grandsons concentrated their attentions on the Washford Road works. Crucible melting in clay pots over coke fires continued until after World War Two. 10 In 1950 the first electric furnace was installed and in 1956 the Company, although still very small, floated on the London Stock Exchange. During the next ten years the Company outgrew its old fashioned premises in the Don Valley and between 1968 and 1974 a new works was built on an elevated, more out-of-town, site. This works grew considerably over the following 30 years and today it is one of the group’s four main plants. Andrew Cook, the present Chairman, took control of the Company in 1981 and began a period of rapid expansion and refocusing on new markets. By 1986 sales exceeded £10 million and, following a series of acquisitions over the next five years, by 1991 they had grown to £120 million. During this period, many famous names in the steel casting industry were taken over by William Cook, including Weir Foundries, George Blair, Lake and Elliott and Lloyds Burton. However, the Company’s stock market listing had become its Achilles heel and in 1996 a hostile takeover bid from a Midlands industrial group threatened the independence and very existence of the Company. After a long battle the bid was finally defeated by Andrew Cook, who took the Company private with venture capital assistance. In 2002, Andrew Cook began to shrink the group to a more manageable size which would be less vulnerable to market vagaries and over-extended management and in 2004 he bought out the venture capital shareholders. After nearly 50 years, William Cook was again back in family ownership. Since 2006 the group has been debt-free and cash rich, with its activities concentrated on its four main plants in Sheffield, Leeds and Weardale and its market focus on high specification, high-value added components and assemblies where engineering innovation, quality control and efficient, professional manufacturing are more important than mere price. 11 World Class resources • Advanced mechanical testing • Induction and arc melting of all ferrous alloys • AOD steel refining • Linear accelerator radiography • CAD and Magma design • No-bake, shell, lost wax, green sand and ceramic moulding • CMM metrology • Pieceweights from 10 grammes to 12 tonnes • CNC pattern and toolmaking • Specialist fabrication and assembly • Extensive CNC machining William Cook Cast Products Sheffield Plant Precision Plant Leeds Plant Stanhope Plant Integrity products in AOD steel Smaller specialist products Rail and other complex components Tank tracks, wearparts and intermodal fittings William Cook Integrity William Cook Master Patterns William Cook Precision William Cook NDT William Cook Leeds William Cook Rail William Cook Stanhope William Cook Intermodal Cook Defence Systems Parkway Avenue Sheffield S9 4WA England Phone +44 (0) 870 787 2353 Fax +44 (0)114 276 6779 Station Road Halfway Sheffield S20 3GD England Phone +44 (0)114 251 0410 Fax +44 (0)114 251 0096 Cross Green Leeds LS9 0SG England Phone +44 (0)113 249 6363 Fax +44 (0)113 249 1376 Stanhope Co Durham DL13 2YR England Phone +44 (0)1388 528 248 Fax +44 (0)1388 528 879 Accreditations and Quality Standards Accreditations and Quality Standards Accreditations and Quality Standards Accreditations and Quality Standards ISO 9001 ISO 14001 OHSAS 18001 Lloyds Register of Shipping American Bureau of Shipping Norsok M-650 NQ1 DNV ISO 9001 ISO 14001 OHSAS 18001 Lloyds Register of Shipping Airbus Air Authority 237 BAE Aerospace AG/10871/MAA DNV RWTUV EN 15085 IRIS LINK-UP ISO 9001 ISO 14001 OHSAS 18001 DNV ISO 9001 ISO 14001 OHSAS 18001 Lloyds Register of Shipping DEFSTAN 95-25 Email: [email protected] 12 www.cookdefencesystems.co.uk a World Class Company www.cookdefencesystems.co.uk
