EN166: PERSONAL EYE PROTECTION AGAINST
VARIOUS DANGERS
The EN166 standard is applicable to all types of eye protection used against various
dangers liable to damage the eye or to alter the vision, with the exception of
radiation of nuclear origin, X rays, laser beams or infrared rays given out by sources
at low temperature. The specifications of this standard are not applicable to eye
protectors for which separate and complete standards exist, such as anti - laser eye
protection, all - purpose solar spectacles, etc.... The eye protectors fitted with
corrective lenses are not excluded from the application field.
All manufacturers of safety eyewear are required to have their products
independently tested against a European standard. Firstly it is important to
remember that both the Frame and Lens are tested, therefore both must include
the CE symbol and the manufacturer’s logo. The CE marking certifies that a product
has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements.
Frame Markings
The frame will usually be marked on the inside of both arms. All safety frames
must pass the European EN166 standard. This is a higher standard that the US or
Asian equivalent and can often be preceeded by BS which is simply the direct
British equivalent. If this is not stamped on the frame then you best to steer clear.
Next will be a numbers and/or letters which indicate to what degree the frames
passed the EN166 test within various categories.
Shape or design of the frame to...
3 - protect against liquid droplets and splashes. This is usually only
found on goggles where a full seal is made around the eyes.
4 - protect against large dust particle over 5 microns in size.
5 - protect against dust and fine dust particles smaller than 5 microns.
Strength of the frame to...
S - withstand impacts against small objects travelling up to 12m/sec
F - withstand impacts against small objects travelling up to 45m/sec
B - withstand impacts against small objects travelling up to 120m/sec
A - withstand impacts against small objects travelling up to 190m/sec
T - withstand impacts at extreme temperatures
Lens Markings
Unlike the frame, lenses can meet various safety standards including EN166, 169,
170 & 172. For obvious reasons the manufacturers are not required to print every
standard on the lens but simply the degree to which they meet the standard.
Using the guide below you can determine which standards they meet. Once again
the manufacturers seal and the CE mark are mandatory. In addition will be a
degree of solar or UV radiation protection, the optical quality and then the
mechanical strength.
Radiation Protection:
2UV Protection (EN170). The number 2 indicates the filter may
effect colour recognition
2C or 3 - UV Protection (EN170). The number 2C (previously 3) indicates

EN169 STANDARD : OCULAR FILTERS FOR WELDING
AND RELATED TECHNIQUES.
The European standard EN169 covers the use of safety glasses for welding and
applies shade levels depending on the use. The EN169 standard ranges from shade
1.2 being the lightest, to 16 the darkest. Anything from shade 8 or above requires a
special welding face shield which we currently do not have in our range.
As a rough guide, welding safety glasses can be used during gas / braze welding but
not high intensity arc welding. Anyone attempting to either gas or arc weld should
be properly trained and therefore know which protective eyewear or face shield is
suitable. If you are in any doubt ask a professional or your health and safety
supervisor. However, the EN169 stand does give some guidance as to which shade
could be used for a certain application but should be used only as a guide and
treated with discretion:
1.7 or 2 - suitable for a welder's assistant or people working within close
proximity to welding activities
3-5suitable for braze, bronze or oxyacetylene gas welding
5-7suitable for Oxy-cutting
8 - 16 face masks suitable for arc welding
EN175 STANDARD : EQUIPMENT FOR EYE AND FACE
PROTECTION DURING WELDING AND ALLIED
PROCESSES.
The EN175 standard specifies the safety requirements and test methods relating to
personal protective equipment used to protect the user's eyes and face against
harmful optical radiation and against other specific risks due to normal welding
processes, cutting processes or other related techniques.
The EN175 standard specifies the protection, including ergonomic aspects against
different types of risks or dangers :

The equipment is designed to adjust protective filters with or without guard lenses
or reinforcement, according to the recommendations of the
protective equipment manufacturer for welding operations, in conformity with the
EN166 and EN169 standards or with the EN379 standard.

to carry out a survey of selected work areas where eye protection products are
currently being used or potentially may be required. All survey work is first agreed
and documented with the customer to include scope and agreed timescales. A full
detailed report is produced following the survey which details all findings and
proposed recommendations.

LENS MATERIAL
These three materials are available for all models in our range.
TOUGHENED GLASS:
This material is composed of sand and chemical elements that constitute traditional
glass. Its main properties are excellent optical quality and good scratch resistance.
Thus, nearly 92% of light is transmitted by toughened glass. In addition to its high
weight, its main disadvantage lies in its low impact resistance and the fact that it
breaks into several small pieces that could damage the eye.

CR39:
This is a plastic resin. It is durable and plastic lenses are 50% lighter, less likely to fog
up and they absorb some ultraviolet rays. On the other hand, they scratch easily and
to prevent this an antiscratch coating is required. At equal power, they are thicker
than toughened glass lenses. An anti-reflective coating is less effective here than on
glass lenses.

POLYCARBONATE:
The main feature of polycarbonate is its resistance to impact. This lens is by far the
most resistant of all. Polycarbonate is 10% thinner than glass and 15% thinner than
plastic. But it is a soft plastic and is therefore easily scratched so an anti-scratch
coating is applied as standard. This material is particularly recommended for
protection in the workplace.
Polycarbonate provides the added advantage of absorbing all ultraviolet rays up to
380 nm (99.99%).

TYPES OF CORRECTIVE LENS
SINGLE VISION LENSES:
Called single vision, these lenses feature one correction for a given distance:
myopia, hypermetropia and/or astigmatism. They are known as single vision
because the optical power is the same for the entire lens.
BIFOCAL LENSES:
Bifocal lenses are designed for people who require two corrections, one for
distance and one for near vision. The top part of the lens corrects distance vision
and the lower part corrects near vision.
PROGRESSIVE OR VARIFOCAL LENSES:
Varifocal lenses do not have any visible lines so they are more aesthetically
appealing. The power gradually changes from the top to the bottom of the lens. It
is a more functional lens because the person wearing this type of lens has
“continuous” vision. It makes it possible to focus on objects at variable distances
whereas a bifocal lens only allows clear vision at two given distances.
FREE FORM LENSES:
Available on a wide range of lenses, Digital Free Form technology combines the
highest level of visual performance with outstanding style. It results from an
improved inner part of the lens with a significantly larger field of vision. This has
been achieved by bringing the optical surface of the eye closer, with progression
and cylinder correction on the inner surface of the lens. This manufacturing
process is a result of a reduction in peripheral distortion and an improvement in
the field of vision compared with standard progressive lenses.
