Table of Contents - Light The Night Walk
You’ve Got It All… You’ve got a Story to Tell You’re walking for a reason. Whether you, a friend, or a family member has been affected personally by blood cancer; or you just know how important this cause is, your story is worth sharing. We provide many ways for you to share this with your family, friends, team members, and local businesses. Sample letters are available online for your use! You’ve got your Friends & Family You don’t have to fundraise alone, and it’s more fun when you don’t! Recruit your friends and family to walk on your team, help plan fundraising events, or both! The more people you have helping, the more people you will be able to reach! You’ve got Us And we have plenty of ideas! We can provide you with hundreds of great fundraising ideas, show you how matching gifts can double your donations, and how you can reach more people than you had ever imagined! All you have to do is ask! You’ve got Each Other Need some inspiration from someone who has been successful in the past? Let us know and we will be happy to put you in contact with a fundraising pro that has participated in Light The Night before! You’ve got it at Your Fingertips As soon as you register for Light The Night, you receive your very own fundraising webpage to get you started! You can personalize it with your story or leave it the way it is. Include this link in a batch of emails to your contact list, and watch your fundraising begin! And Most Importantly, You’ve got a Plan Instead of focusing on your overall fundraising goal, break it up into smaller parts and create a plan to achieve each one! Once you have your plan in place, delegate! With planning and tackling one small piece at a time, you’ll reach your total goal in no time! Don’t forget – Raise $100 to be a Champion for Cures & receive a tshirt, carry a balloon and enjoy the refreshments! Your Month by Month Fundraising Guide The fundraising doesn’t have to stop after the Walk – the money you raise between now and January 31st, 2013 will be counted toward your fundraising total for incentives! January New Years Eve Party – Have local restaurants, bars, stores, etc. donate space or food for your event. Recruit friends to serve as the DJ and bartender, and have guests bring snacks! Charge a cover at the door and provide party hats, confetti, horns, and fun! 2013 Calendars – Choose a theme or pictures for each month: blood cancer awareness, local attractions, family & friends, etc. Have a local store, or a site online, create the calendars and then sell them with proceeds going toward your campaign! Biggest Loser Challenge – Know a few people making New Year’s resolutions to lose weight? Set a donation amount to enter, have an initial weigh in, and present a donated prize to the person that loses the most weight after a month! Polar Bear Plunge – Grab the attention of your friends, family, and community by deciding to take a dive into the icy water nearest you if you reach a certain fundraising goal! This is a great story for your local media, and you can jump in individually or as a team! Guess that Baby – Have everyone in your office, church, or school bring in a picture of them as a baby. Charge a donation per guess and the person with the most matches wins a prize! Bake Sale – Everyone loves treats! Hold a bake sale at work, at school, during a sporting event, etc. – the possibilities are endless! Or try a bake sale with a twist and make healthy snacks to keep everyone on track with their New Year’s resolutions! Don’t Forget to Double Your Donations! Many companies have matching gift programs. Be sure to mention on your webpage and in your letters and emails for your donors to check with their company! It’s a great and easy way to double (or sometimes triple) your fundraising dollars! If you have questions, contact your local office: Charlotte 704.705.1850 Raleigh/Durham 919.367.4100 Greensboro 336.292.7430 February Superbowl Sunday Funday – Invite all your football loving friends over for a Superbowl party! Have everyone bring their favorite game watching snack, and you provide the drinks. Charge $5 at the door to cover the cost of drinks as well as a donation to your Light The Night campaign. Sell betting squares with half of the money going to the winner, and half to you! Bachelor/ Bachelorette Auction – Gather all your single friends to be auctioned off for Valentine’s Day dates! Find a venue to donate the space, charge a small admission fee, and sell refreshments! Advertise your event in a local newspaper, online, or through a television station! Valentine Grams – Use chocolate or lollipops and sell one for $.50 or five for $2.00. Attach a note with a person’s name and message and deliver them around your community for Valentine’s Day. Be sure to advertise and explain why you’re selling these! Product Party – Host a party at your home with a local representative of Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Creative Memories, etc. Ask if a portion of the proceeds can go towards your fundraising efforts! Count the Kisses – Set up a jar of Hershey’s Kisses in a well trafficked area of your office. Charge a quarter a guess for how many are in the jar. The winner gets enough candy to last a month! Provide snacks, entertainment, and games for the children! 50/ 50 Drawing – Purchase a large roll of raffle tickets at your local craft store and sell each ticket for a designated price. At the end of your sales, draw one ticket to win half of the money collected! The more tickets you sell, the more fundraising dollars you earn! Rose Sale – An easy and fun way to raise funds is selling roses for Valentines Day! You can get discount roses from supermarkets, wholesale florists, or web sites specializing in bulk shipments from rose growing areas. Offer single roses, bouquets, or even chocolate roses! Spaghetti Dinner – Contact a local town venue to donate their space to host a spaghetti dinner. Get your local grocery store to donate the basics (pasta, sauce, cheese, salad ingredients, and bread) and invite the town to dine for a donation! March St. Patrick’s Day Party – Invite your friends and family over to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Decorate with green and serve green food (cookies, candy, etc)! Have a pot o’ gold at the door to collect donations! Shamrock Bucks – Sell paper shamrocks for a dollar. This idea works well in businesses and schools where they can be displayed for everyone to see. The buyer can write their name or a message to someone else! Happy Hour – Ask a local bar or pub if they will donate 10 percent of the proceeds between 5pm and 8pm to your fundraising campaign. Or you can take donations at the door. Be sure to bring information and flyers to spread awareness while you’re raising money! Trivia Night – Many restaurants or bars already host their own trivia nights. Ask one if you can be included in theirs and charge to play. You can advertise and draw in a larger crowd! This website has a lot of useful tips about hosting your own trivia night: http://stepbystepfundraising.com/trivia-night-fundraiser. Pot O’ Gold – Another twist on the guessing game, using a black plastic kettle (like seen at Halloween) and fill it with gold foil wrapped candy. Charge $1 per guess and the winner gets all the gold! Don’t Hold onto Those Donations! Once you start receiving donations, be sure to go ahead and send them in! Donations made by check: 1. Make sure the check is made out to LLS (if they are made out to you, please write a personal check made out to LLS for the same amount). 2. Write your name (and team name, if applicable) in the memo section. 3. Complete the Donation Submission Form (included in this packet or available online). 4. Online or Credit Card Donations: 1. Encourage anyone who would like to make a credit card donation to do so online to your personal fundraising page. Your donor will receive a receipt by email after donating online. * Please note it can take up to 2 weeks for checks, and up to 48 hours for online donations, to show up on your fundraising page * April Fashion Boutique Sale – Starting a few months before the sale, collect donated once used prom dresses, wedding gowns, bridesmaids’ dresses and any additional gently used clothing. Sell these items at bargain prices and you’ll raise hundreds of dollars while cleaning out your closet! Yard Sale – While you’re cleaning out your closet, go ahead and sort through all of your old or no longer used belongings. You can also invite friends and family to donate their items and hold a joint yard sale! You can also give out snacks or beverages for donations while your shoppers browse! Restaurant Sponsorship – Many restaurants will be happy to support you in your fundraising efforts! They may donate a percentage of one night’s earnings or a percentage of the total bill from those who come in with a coupon you have given them. Many national chains have supported participants in this way: Chik-fil-A, Pizza Hut, Chili’s, Krispy Kreme, California Pizza Kitchen, etc. Cupcakes for a Cure – Make a large batch of your favorite cupcakes (or try a few different recipes from www.cupcakerecipes.com). Ask for a donation of $1 (or more) for each cupcake and find a few spots to sell your goodies in! A delicious way to fundraise! Flamingo Flocking – Purchase 10 lawn flamingos to distribute throughout your neighborhood or your office. Attach a note explaining that for a $10 donation to your campaign the flamingo will be removed… but for $15, they will be moved to the lawn of their choice! You could also sell “repellent” for $10 to protect a lawn from a flamingo. Include a sign with your information so passerby can contact you to put flamingos in lawns of their choice! Sidewalk Chalk Art Show – Gather a group of local artists (no matter their age) from schools, businesses, etc. Make this art show themed and have the artists draw something relating to Light The Night. Pick a time and location (where there is a lot of foot traffic) and people passing can place monetary ‘votes’ in cans placed next to the chalk art they find to be the best. Make a Change – Let donors know that once you reach your fundraising goal, you will dye your hair or wear an outrageous outfit to the walk. The more drastic, the better! Invite your donors to witness this change, and take lots of pictures! The Singing Bee (Karaoke) – Host a karaoke night at a local restaurant or bar where everyone enters to sing with a $5 donation. Make it interesting by picking the song they have to sing. As on the show, “The Singing Bee,” they have to sing a line of the song word for word. Whoever doesn’t get it exactly right, is out. The winner gets a prize donated from a local business (gift cards, tickets to a show, etc). May Cinco de Mayo Party – Host a Cinco de Mayo party at your home and charge a door fee for everyone attending. Have fun music, plenty of food, and festive drinks! Incorporate games with donated prizes for the winners! Mother’s Day – Celebrate and honor mom on her special day. A great way to do that is with a flower corsage. Visit this website and learn how to make your own: www.ehow.com/how_2100628_make-a-corsage.html. Offer your services to friends and family for a donation to your campaign! Celebrating a big day? – In lieu of presents for your birthday, Mother’s Day, or Graduation, ask your friends and family to make donations to your Light The Night fundraising campaign! Fast Cash – Get permission to set up a table outside your local grocery store, Target, or Wal-Mart. Make your table display bright, include posters, music, and giveaways! You can include baked goods, candy, or information on LLS and blood cancers. If you set up on a busy Saturday or Sunday morning, you’re sure to raise a lot of money quickly! Enlist Your Friends – Give 10 friends 10 fundraising letters, donation sheets, and pre-stamped reply envelopes and ask them to distribute to 10 of their friends or family members. Dog Walking – Walk dogs for your neighbors for a fee or donations. Post an advertisement in the local newspaper or in retail locations around town. Be sure to include why you’re raising money! Host a Bike Ride – If you live in a rural area, host a bike ride for your friends, family, and neighbors! Plan a route, print little maps, and advertise to everyone you know! Encourage people to make a donation themselves and to get sponsored by their family and friends. Offer prizes to the fastest and/or highest fundraising rider! Deposit Bottle Collection – Create a flyer with information about Light The Night and your fundraising efforts. Distribute them house to house in your neighborhood (avoiding mailboxes, this violates federal law). Give a few days notice to give people time to collect their bottles and cans, but not too much time so they won’t forget! This is an easy way to collect money because you are taking away the hassle of returning the bottles. Office Pantry – Pick a place in your office (probably best in your own workspace) to designate as the office pantry. Fill it with a variety of soda, snacks, and candy that you normally find in a vending machine. Create a price list and be sure to mention all proceeds go to your Light The Night campaign! June Car Wash – Gather a group of friends and family to help you. Pick a location that’s in the center of a busy town. Advertise in your local newspaper to drive more business and also have a couple of people out front of the establishment holding posters to inform drivers as they drive by. Charge $10 or $20 per car and also have a donation jar set aside for extra donations. Door-to-Door for Dollars – Try and recruit a group of friends and family to walk the neighborhoods asking for donations. We recommend you don’t go it alone! Your goal is to get everyone to donate at least one dollar. Look noticeable and have fun with it – wear a Light The Night tshirt from a previous year or carry some balloons! Backyard Barbeque – Pick a warm weekend and host a BBQ with friends, family, and neighbors! You can cook hotdogs and hamburgers, serve corn, chips, and other sides and have people bring their own drinks. Have lots of fun games and competitions (maybe with a donated prize or two), and have your guests make donations at the door! Use your Green Thumb – Use your gardening talents for donations! Go to local stores, community parks, and neighbors to see if they need help tending to their gardens. For extra donations, see if people want to purchase bulbs or seeds. Father’s Day Chili Cook Off – Who says men can’t cook?! Charge an entry fee for all cooks to come show off their talent and offer donated prizes to the winners. Try to gather local celebrities to make up the judging panel and to attract more people to come. Have different categories to enter (ex. Best spicy chili, best vegetarian chili, etc). Mark Your Calendars Now! Want more great ideas? Want to talk to someone who’s been here before? Just join one of our “Fundraising Mentor” conference calls & listen in on everything Light The Night! Whether you’re a Team Captain, part of a Team, or going at it alone – there’s something for you here! Each month calls will be held for you to join in on! Listen in on one, or all of them! Go to www.lightthenight.org/nc/localchapter/tools to find out more! July 4th of July Party – Break out the fireworks and light up the grill! Invite friends and family over to celebrate Independence Day and kick off summer with a fundraising bang! Here is a site that can help you plan an amazing party: www.evite.com/app/cms/ideas/4th-july Business Cards – Print up some inexpensive business cards (you can even do it on your home computer). Have all the pertinent information on the card: your name, event information, your website, etc. Hand these out to everyone you meet! Garage Sale – Build your stock of items to sell by enlisting the help of neighbors! Visit several neighborhoods with flyers explaining that you are collecting items for a garage sale to benefit Light The Night. The day of the sale, put up balloons, wear your tshirt, and be sure to advertise that you are fundraising! Cute Pets – Everyone thinks their pet is the cutest – now they can see if they’re right! Invite every pet owner you know to submit a photo of their pet to you. Glue or tape the pictures on empty cans and display them at work or at home (have a pet party!). Have people vote for the cutest animal by giving money. The winner receives a special prize! Spare Change – Set up spare change baskets on your dresser, your desk at work, etc. and drop your change in and encourage others to do the same. Make the baskets visible and fun! Make a Racquet – Invite all of your single, double, and mix doubles tennis players to a fabulous tennis tournament hosted by you! Charge an entrance fee (as their donation) or they have an option of getting sponsored by a business to cover the cost. Try hosting it at a country club that will give you the courts for the afternoon and possibly even treat the tennis players to free beverages and finger foods after the event is over. Gather donated prizes for the winners! Recruit Your Team Today! Gather your family and friends to join your team and your efforts to fight blood cancer! Visit www.lightthenight.org/nc to get them registered under your team name! A great fundraising idea for teams? Create team t-shirts! Have local businesses sponsor them and put their logos on the back. Have each team member donate $10 to their efforts to get a tshirt! August Pool Party – If you have the resources (a pool, proper supervision, etc.) a pool party is an awesome fundraiser idea for summer! Sell snacks, raffle off prizes, and set up carnival type games for the kids! Concert in the Park – A concert takes a lot of planning, but if you have the resources it can be a huge success! Put together a showcase of local talent for your concert. Many local bands will play for free because it’s a great opportunity for them to display their talents. Alumni Organizations – Call your own college or university and ask them to place an ad in the alumni newsletter asking for donations. You can also try contacting your old schoolmates through www.classmates.com. One $500 Ask – We recommend singling out at least one person or company to ask for a $500 donation. Make a personal appeal to this person, explaining why you are asking them and what it means to you. Wear your Apparel – Wear your Light The Night gear often – to the gym, grocery store, running errands, etc. People will be curious to know what you’re up to and may want to make a donation! Red Party – Hold a party or dinner in which everyone must be wearing something red. You supply the food and drinks, and they supply the donations. Ask local stores for food or drink donations. Spread the Word – Does your company have a newsletter? Interoffice email? Take advantage of these and advertise your campaign! It’s a great way to get the word out and maybe even gain a few team members! Also take advantage of your local media and tell them your story! Talent Show – Arrange an evening in which kids and adults alike perform (singing songs, dancing, playing an instrument, reading a poem, etc). Have the audience members make donations and offer a prize to the winner! Use your Email – On your home and work email signatures, mention your efforts! Put a link to your webpage and ask for donations. This can encourage new donors and those who have just forgotten! Back to School – Hold a back to school party for your family, friends, and neighbors. Invite everyone over for a backyard cookout, supplying the food and fun, while your guests supply donations to your campaign! September Hawaiian Day – As a final hoorah to summer, throw a luau! This can be done in school, at home, or in an office. Encourage people to dress the part – flip flops, shorts and Hawaiian themed tshirts! In order to participate, everyone can donate $5. Virtual Yard Sale – Sell unwanted gifts, clothing, furniture, music, and DVDs on eBay or Craigslist for some fast cash! Concession Stands – Your children’s soccer, football, track or field hockey games are great spots to set up a concession stand to sell different food and drink products. These can be homemade items (baked goods, hot chocolate, etc) or bought. You can also set up a tip jar and put a label on the front describing your fundraising efforts. Dress Down Day – Some schools, organizations, or places of business have strict dress codes where you practically wear the same thing each day. Check with the HR department, principal, or supervisor and plan a day when people can dress down in exchange for a donation to the Light The Night Walk. Book Sale – Everyone loves a book sale because nobody likes to throw away books! Collect books from people at work, school, in local businesses, organizations, and family and friends. Sell these books for a suggested donation from your home, yard sale, school, work, or local organization. Negativity or Curse Jar – Too much negativity at work? Make all of your coworkers contribute $1 to the jar when they say something negative or curse. It can be a great way to foster office morale while reaching your fundraising goal! Penny Wars – This is a great activity for the workplace or at a school! Put jars to deposit spare change in, labeled with each homeroom or department, in a busy area. Make it a contest to see who can earn the most points. Pennies count as one point, and any silver or paper money counts as negative points. Ex. A penny is plus 1 point, a dime is negative 10 points, and a dollar is negative 100 points. You can add pennies to your jar or dollars to another groups jar -- the department or homeroom with the most points wins a prize! Tutor for a Cause – Are you good at a particular subject? Put up flyers around town in your local library and schools to generate interest. Set up appointments to tutor in math, English, or science and charge an hourly amount. Let your students know you are doing this for Light The Night – they may decide to pay you extra or make a separate donation. October Trick or Treating, Light The Night Style – Put a new twist on your fundraising letter and use Halloween themed paper and cut it in fun Halloween shapes! Add your text, a few cobwebs or plastic spiders, and put in the mail! Instead of trick or treating for candy, you’ll be “trick or treating” for donations! Costume Party – Throw a costume party for adults and/or children and include dancing, food, music, and karaoke. Offer a prize for the best costume! Send out invitations in the mail or through Evite. Charge a cover at the door. Cake Sale – Sell goodies at festivals and fairs including cookies, cakes, apple pies, candy apples, etc. Make it fall themed and include a tip jar! Orchard Visits – Contact a local orchard and see if they would collaborate with you! Host a day where families can go for hayrides, corn mazes, or pumpkin picking and donate the proceeds to your campaign! Rake-a-thon – Set aside a weekend to gather a group to rake your neighbors leaves. Put a letter in the mailboxes to let them know what you’ll be doing and how they can participate. You can charge rates for different services (front lawn/back lawn, mowing, etc.)! Pumpkin Decorating – Host a pumpkin decorating party, where you provide the pumpkins and supplies in exchange for a donation! Sports Themed Party – Host a party in your home or a local bar with a sports theme. During the game you can give out prizes for touchdowns, certain plays, trivia, etc. Haunted House – Create a haunted house for neighbors, family, and friends. For step by step instructions on how to create the spookiest haunted house, go to www.ehow.com/how_1391_make-haunted-house.html. Murder Mystery Party – A murder mystery party is usually a small gathering held in someone’s home. These are great for an adult only party. Plan your event at http://stepbystepfundraising.com/murder-mystery-party-fundraiser. LLS Bracelets – Purchase LLS bracelets to sell to friends, family, and coworkers for a donation! Contact your local staff member for more information and to purchase your bracelets today! November Stuff the Turkey – Make a turkey out of paper mache or find one at a party store and take to a local bar or restaurant. Have people stuff it with money; all proceeds going directly to Light The Night. Or have people stuff their names inside the turkey (for a fee) and they can win a gift certificate donated by the bar or restaurant. Get the Picture – When is the last time you sent a family photo Christmas card? The idea here is to offer family portraits, vintage photos, and other “dressy” pictures. Get local photographers to donate their time and advertise in advance! Pre sell tickets and time slots and find a great location to hold your event! Wine and Cheese Tasting – Partner with a wine merchant or distributor who can not only help with supplying wine and expert advice, but can also help sell advance tickets to your event. Make sure to charge a cover at the door. Here are some tips on how to throw a successful party: http://www.ehow.com/how_1713_throw-winetasting.html Black Friday – The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year! Contact your local businesses (toy stores, malls, Target, etc.) to see if you could set a table to ask for donations or sell homemade items. Make sure you make your table attractive and festive to draw attention! Fall Fashion Show – Contact various small stores throughout your town and get an agreement to show so many fall fashions for a community fashion show. Charge a fee per store and feature 5 to 10 stores in an hour long show. Charge a cover to see the show and offer food and beverages for a donation. Coca for the Cure – This is a very easy idea to warm your donors from the inside out! Fill pastry bags with cocoa mix, chocolate chips, and mini marshmallows. Tie with a ribbon and a tag that says “cocoa for a cure!” Run Errands – This can be for the elderly or anyone who many not want to drive in snowy weather. Become someone’s personal assistant for the day in return for donations. Take a few hours and go grocery shopping or pick up someone’s dry cleaning for donations! Make Bracelets – Create your own Light The Night bracelets using stretchy cord, beads, jewelry pliers, and clasps! Gather your team and make it a group effort. Sell to coworkers, family, and friends with proceeds going to your Light The Night campaign! December Shovel Driveways – Before it snows, make your way around the neighborhood and let everyone know you’re willing to shovel their driveways and walkways through the winter months. You can recruit your friends and family for help! Gift Wrapping Booths – It’s the holiday season and you know what that means – gifts, gifts, gifts! Get in touch with local stores and vendors and set up a gift wrapping booth outside various locations. A great spot to do this would be at the mall or large bookstores. Make a sign and have a donation box on hand. Donations instead of Presents – Instead of presents, put donations on your wish list this year! This could work well in an office setting, or anywhere you draw “Secret Santa’s.” Ornament Making – Head to your local craft store to purchase all the materials you may need. Create ornaments using personal designs and sell them to team members, family, friends, and neighbors! Stress Relief “Tea Bags” – Place a single tea bag in an envelope and attach a card explaining that the reader should enjoy a stress break. Leave instructions on how to do this and let the reader know that this relief was provided in hopes that they would enjoy it and if so inclined, could respond by making a donation. Include a self addressed, stamped envelope where they can mail it back. Candy Cane Grams – This idea can work in your child’s school, or in an office. Students, faculty, and employees can purchase a candy cane (usually $1) and attach a message to be distributed to someone else on a particular day. This is a perfect way to tell your coworkers how much you appreciate their help or thank a friend for helping you study! Breakfast with Santa – Have someone dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus. Advertise your event in your local paper or have a low key event in your home. There should be a door charge for adults and free entry for children. You can also take pictures with Santa which people can purchase at $5 or $10. Make it festive with decorations and music! Wreath or Poinsettia Sales – Visit your local garden center or nursery to purchase wreaths and poinsettias. Decorate the wreaths for the holiday season and sell these at local craft fairs or festivals! Christmas or Holiday Gathering – Decorate your home, provide food and beverages, plan a gift swap, etc. Invite everyone you know to come and join in on the fun!
