The Hamburger Luncheon benefiting King’ Manor on September
20th was another example of the
Hereford community’s compassion and heart. The benefit was
sponsored by a generous alliance
of Hereford churches and individuals. As we have seen so many
times before, the outpouring of
support was heart-stopping. Our
friend Jim Steiert entreated the assistance of local churches and individuals who underwrote the cost of
the entire event. The event raised
over $25,000 to go towards the fire
loss. God is good, as are the folks
of Deaf Smith County!

Our residents had a special treat
at September’s family night in the
form of guest “cookers” from the
Friday Morning Men’s Group.
These gentlemen are a group of
Christian men who meet every
Friday and share their love of
Christ in not only the way they
live their lives but by “doing
good” in our community. These
men cooked hamburgers and hot
dogs for King’s Manor residents
and families, and then joined us
for our meal which was such a
special gift. They not only underwrote the cost of the meat, but
made a donation to the Sunday
hamburger benefit as well. We
are so thankful to Tim Laws, B.J.
Gililland, Scott Hall, Scott Keeling, Steve Horrell, John Stagner,
Mike Brumley, Tom Dickerson,
and Billy Seiver for your support
and your presence.

King’s Manor
Auxiliary
When King’s Manor and Westgate were built, a group of ladies
from the Hereford community
started a service organization to
serve the residents. These ladies
did room visits, wrote letters for
residents, delivered mail, painted
fingernails, did the monthly birthday parties and other parties and
functions held during the year,
and took care of the manor desk in
King’s Manor. They met two times
each year and paid annual dues of
$10.00. They eventually started
having bake sales to raise funds
to fill needs for the residents such
as Christmas gifts and to purchase
items for King’s Manor.
In recent years they have kept
the pianos and organ tuned. They
have purchased furniture, items
for the kitchen and window treatments; they have given memorials in memory of those who have
passed away - all of this to name
only a few things the organization
has done throughout the years.
The Auxiliary was once a vital
part of King’s Manor and its mission to serve others but because of
a lack of participation, is no longer functioning. We would like
to know if there is someone or a
group of someones who would be
interested in volunteering to lead
and organize the Auxiliary before
it is officially closed. If you have
any questions and/or are interested
in this volunteer position, please
contact Shelly Moss here at King’s
Manor.

Manor News
September
was an amazing
month here at the Manor. We had
a lot of very special activities for
everyone to participate in. On the
11th, Joanna Kluck presented a
very helpful Nutrition In-service
for the Manor Residents. We had
great attendance and Residents
gained a lot of useful information
for individual diet needs. Thanks
Joanna, we sure enjoyed the program.
Starting off Assisted Living
week with a bang, on the 15th we
had a Manor/Community Health
Fair sponsored by “Kings Manor
Home Health.” Flu shots were given to the Residents and the community; blood pressure and blood
sugar levels were also tested. The
Residents and I had a Craft Table
with all kinds of wonderful things
to purchase. Tickets for the Texas
Quilt have sold well, and I look forward to the drawing on Oct. 1st in
the front lobby at 10 a.m. I would
like to thank the Hereford High
Beauty School for coming to the
Health Fair to make sure everyone
got a relaxing manicure after their
shot. We had about fifteen students
participating. Thanks Rhonda, for
making this happen. Also, thanks
to the Dietary staff for the amazing
refreshments which they always
provide for our events.
On the 16th we had a Mexican Fiesta Lunch with enchiladas,
beans, rice and all the trimmings.
Our very own Kings Manor Fiesta
Dancers came to entertain the residents with a traditional Mexican
dance. The ladies were all dressed
in their beautiful dresses full of
color and history as they represented the holiday with such grace. We
couldn’t leave out Bingo during
Assisted Living Week and we had a
great turnout. We played the game
in a different manner. The residents
were allowed to steal a table mate’s
prize if they didn’t like their own.
However, no one would steal each
other’s prize, even though it was
contemplated at times with lots of
laughter in the air, but with no takers.
As the week came to a fast end,
we had Family Night on the 17th.
The food was cooked outside by
the Friday Morning Men’s Group.
Words cannot express how much
we appreciate you - what a great
group of guys! They provided the
meat and cooked for the Residents
and families, serving about 160
people that night. The burgers were
amazing, not to mention the hotdogs which are always my favorite.
Our facility is truly blessed to have
so many great Volunteers.
After everyone was served we
were also blessed to have Rocky
Andrews and his wife play great,
good ole country Gospel favorites.
This brought such joy to all our
hearts. We are so appreciative for
you coming and sharing your Godgiven talents.
As I look over September’s calendar I could go on and on about
how each day here at the Manor
is so wonderful. I am so thankful
to spend my day with the people I
care so much about.
With October here and all the
holidays around the corner, we will
be having several special events
posted in your calendars, I look
forward to seeing everyone, hope
you have a great month enjoy the
beauty of the Fall season.

Westgate News
September was a very busy
month. We celebrated Mexico’s
Independence with a Fiesta Day
on the 16th. Family Night had a
wonderful turnout, as we had our
last cook-out for this year. Thank
you to all the staff for your help
during all the cook-outs.
We will start the month with
our monthly birthday party with
Childcare. National Dessert Day is
on the 14th, pumpkin decorating is
on the 22nd, and we will end the
month with an Oktoberfest party in
the Lamar Room with Childcare.
We will start our Fall and holiday
crafts this month.
We are looking forward to these
next couple of months with all
kinds of fun groups and activities.

King’s Manor Home Health News
I was calling Bingo at King’s Manor a few weeks ago. After we had finished, I was talking to several of the
residents from the Cottages about
home health care. They asked me,
“When did home health care start in
America?” I told them that it got its
start around 1883 in a small town in
Nashua, New Hampshire. There was
a group of young Nashua women
who founded a nonprofit and named
it The Good Cheer Society. These ladies were concerned with the health
and welfare of the community’s poor
and disadvantaged. The members of
the society made home visits to the
sick mill workers and their children
in and around Nashua.
In 1902, nineteen years later the
Society hired its first nurse. The need
for services grew over the years, and
more nurses and a supervisor were
employed and the Nashua Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) was
formed, becoming one of the first of
the nation’s VNA’s.
Many regarded visiting nurses as
the solution to urban threats of poverty, industrialization, and infectious
disease. Brief nurse visits treated
the sick, trained family members in
care techniques, and protected the
public from the spread of disease
through better hygiene. By 1905
there were 171 VNA agencies and
they employed 455 nurses. People
were treated at home versus hospitalization and many additional nurses worked freelance as private duty
caregivers.
In 1912 the American Red Cross
(ARC) established a national rural
visiting nurse service for the people
sick in the county. Following World
War I, ARC launched an intensive
effort to help its local chapters initiate community-based services for
visiting nurses.
Home-based nursing care reached
a turning point in 1929. Urban death
rates were declining dramatically
and infectious diseases were being
replaced by degenerative diseases as
a leading cause of death. Hospitalbased care was now being sought
by patients and private duty nurses
followed these patients into the institutional setting. Home care became
secondary to the hospital-based system that dominated American health
care.
Medicare legislation in 1965 provided home care benefits for the elderly. Certification to participate in
the program was limited to nonprofit
home care agencies and public health
departments. Approximately 1275
organizations were initially certified.
Services expanded and therapists,
home health aides, homemakers, social workers, and nutritionists joined
the home care team. The Older
Americans Act, designed to help older persons stay in their homes, was
also initiated during this time with
home care funding. Home care as an
industry began to grow rapidly.
During the last one hundred and
thirty years, American families have
cared for their sick and disabled
loved ones in their homes, and they
have increasingly turned to home
care professionals for assistance.
Many of the procedures and services have changed, but the essence of
home care - the warm, personalized
care - remains the same. It has been
proven over and over that providing
a sense of continued freedom and independence to clients in the comfort
of their home allows them to heal
and recover more quickly.
The most recent published number
of home care agencies in America
was released in 2012 by the National
Association of Home Care, (NAHC)
stating there are 12,200, and according to the Texas Association of Home
Care, there are 5,500 in Texas. We at
King’s Manor Home Health are proud
to be one of the 5,500 in Texas. Our
agency is Medicare approved and is
the only one in Deaf Smith, Castro,
or Parmer counties that is accredited
by the community health accreditation program, CHAP.
CHAP is the leading accrediting
organization for the home health
care industry and has publicly certified King’s Manor Home Health
as voluntarily achieving the highest
standard of excellence for homebased health care. The rigorous
CHAP process involves a thorough
examination of the business and
service aspects of the entire King’s
Manor Home Health Care organization, which includes office and client visits in order to evaluate service
quality, structural strength, organizational effectiveness, and human and
financial resources.
The Medicare regulations are
very clear about freedom of choice,
so when the necessity arises that you
are in need of home health services,
remember that it is your right to select the home health of your choice.
