So many things are going on around here, and I am happy to tell you about some of them. The Lenten Fish Fries were amazing, drawing together numerous members of the parish to cook, serve, clean and eat! I enjoyed seeing so many of you at this great tradition, and I thank all those who worked so hard to make it a success (as well as delicious). We celebrated Holy Week with beautiful ceremonies here at Christ the King, and at the Easter Vigil we welcomed six new members of the Church into our community. Your prayers and good example have been an inspiration to the candidates and catechumens. We also were privileged to have Archbishop Schnurr here at the parish for the Sacrament of Confirmation for our 7th and 8th grade students. I am very proud of our young people and the way they prepared for this important moment in their lives. Also, over the past six months 78 new families have joined our parish. We are growing and people love what they find here. Coming soon we have our JUNEFEST! Once again it looks like our parish will have one of the best festivals in town. Many people have been working hard and it will be exciting to see the results on the weekend of June 1, 2 and 3. There is nothing like Junefest to help us all build up our community spirit. Please come and be part of it. Green, gold, and purple decorations transformed the club into a scene out of Bourbon Street. It was hard to stay away from the dance floor once the Ambassadors started playing. Revelers enjoyed a delicious New Orleans style dinner buffet, jazz music by Mike Wade and the Jazz Ambassadors, and a lively auction emceed by Mike Brown. The party was chaired by Diane Altmix, Cheri Fitch, Angela Habel, Laura Fredrick, Nicole Fredrick, El McKenzie, Julie Moore, Julie O'Toole, Gerry Schulze and Suzanne Watts. NEW MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: LITURGY COORDINATORS You arrive at Mass, genuflect on your way into the pew and reach for a Gather hymnal as the first notes of the procession sound. It doesn’t occur to you that the church doors are open, the lights are on, and it is reasonably cool—or warm—inside, depending on the season. Most people take for granted that Mass will begin at the appointed time. They may not realize that one person has been diligently working behind the scenes to make sure everything is ready. Liturgy Coordinators are part of the newest ministry at Christ the King. They work closely with the celebrant to make sure Mass goes off without a hitch. Father Ed created the role as a way for parishioners to take greater ownership in the liturgy, the centerpiece of Catholic life. The coordinators also make the entire process more manageable when there is a guest celebrant. Liturgy coordinators unlock church, set up for Mass, verify that the servers, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers are present, and close up when it’s all over. If you are interested in becoming a Liturgy Coordinator, please contact: Linda Gloeckler at [email protected] or Mary Alice Manley at [email protected]. 5 WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Let’s extend a warm welcome to those who have joined our parish recently: ADAMS, Richard & Ms. Anne Hulefeld • ALECK, Brianna • ALIKHAN, Asif & Family • ALMEIDA, Javier & Lorena and Family • ANDERSON, Rachael • BACZEWSKI, Anthony • BALLMAN, Kelly • BARAN, Katie • BATTAGLIA, Laura • BERGER, Rick & Amie and Family • BERNEKING, Meghan • BODLE, Ryan & Ms. Kara Colgan • BUCHER, Julie & Mr. Tony Krebs • BUSH, Wade & Patty and Family • CATALANO, Filippo & Jennifer and Family • CHAVEZ, Mr. & Mrs. Bjorn • CHICKEY, Joseph & Ms. Karen Schultz • CLAY, Buck • CORKER, Matthew & Kim • CRISTMAN, David • DEMPSEY, Jennifer • DONAHUE, Ryan & Anne and Family • FAVAGROSSA, Marcello & Elena and Family • FELDHAUS, Christina • FRANCHINI, Kathryn • FULTON, Benjamin & Jill and Family • FURMAN, Courtney • GERWE, James & Alyson and Family • GITTINGER, Mark & Ms. Jessica Noll • HACKL, Joseph • HARRIS, Brooke • HAUSER, Michael & Ms. Emily Shields • HERRON, Christopher & Sarah and Family • HESS, Ashley & Alison and Family • HIANCE, Mary Chris • HOCK, Rebecca • JONES, Casey & Elizabeth and Family • KEATING, Paul & Ms. Elyse Koeninger • KELLEY, Dan & Lauren and Family • KERSCHEN, Hank • KONERMAN, Morgan & Ms. Carrie Ahern • KRALY, Steven & Erin and Family • KUKULSKI, Jonathan & Elizabeth Family • LANE, Ryan & Ann Marie • LATHROP, Ben & Anne and Family • LEE, Kenneth & Deborah and Family • LOEPKER, Ryan • LOVE, Germaine and Family • LOWE, Ms. Patti and Family • LUTTENEGGER, Kevin & Stacey and Family • LYONS, Julie • MAJBA, Michael & Stacy and Family • MARTIN, Ken & Molly • McCARTY, Sean • O’GRADY, Mike & Kate and Family • PERKINS, Mike & Lori and Family • POOLE, Andrew & Ms. Lori Hufford • RICCIARDI, Leanne • RIEBELING, Jennifer • ROBERTO, David & Sherri and Family • SCHMIDT, Nicole • SCHMITZ, Jenna • SCHRIMPF, Robert & Ragen • SCHUELKE, Nicholas • SCHWEITZER, Myrinda & Mr. Scott Smith and Family • SIMON, Scott & Sarah and Family • SOLLER, Kris & Emily and Family • STEFANKO, Seth & Ms. Tori VonderAhe • STEINNAGEL, Kyle • TURNER, Derek & Jennifer and Family • UNDERHILL, Tim & Lisa and Family • UNDERHILL, John Sr. & Regina and Family • VanHimbergen, David & Jill and Family • VEITH, Matthew & Tara and Family • WEGMANN, Ronnie & Heather and Family • WERNER, Colleen • WIRTZ, Patrick & Melissa • ZIEGLER, Jeff & Ms. Molly Schoeplein and Family / THE ARTS COME ALIVE The Fine Arts Committee served up an exciting menu of activities this year revolving around the theme of discovery. “Expressing Yourself: Telling Stories Through the Arts” exposed students to areas as diverse as photography, acoustic music, design, theater, and acrobatics. In the fall students in grades six through eight focused on visual art when professional photographer Tony Arrasmith met with them to discuss the fundamentals of digital photography. His visit culminated in a student PACELLI SCHOOL NEWS Seventh grader Sophie Besl’s “Exploding Raindrop” won best photo in The Natural World category of the student photography contest. (above) photography contest featuring four categories, including one for Mt. Lookout/Hyde Park landmarks. Students’ entries were displayed in two exhibits: one at school during Catholic Schools Week and the other on the Cardinal Pacelli website. bodies in the Astronomy Dome, you can thank the PTO. IN THE SPOTLIGHT Briggs O'Toole holds a Bearded Dragon in Mrs. Long’s classroom. The third graders enjoyed a hands-on lesson about reptiles when Veterinarian Dan Meakin visited. Once a month students enjoyed a live musical performance in the cafeteria. In November the cafeteria was unusually tranquil as Hee Jin Yoon mesmerized students with the sounds of her harp (left). In March, the sixth and seventh graders took a design-related field trip to the University of Cincinnati. They visited the College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning (DAAP) and the College-Conservatory of Music . Vanessa Phelan of DAAP showed how "design" is really solving everyday problems, using art, science, and math. The students also learned about different design careers, including architecture, fashion, graphics, horticulture, industrial design, and urban planning. The Fine Arts Committee is a PTO sponsored committee made up of parent volunteers. Thanks to Anne Texter, Mitch Dunn, Wendy Yip, Julie Robers-Cox, Jill Giles and Nicole Fredrick for their effort and creativity in bringing the Arts to Cardinal Pacelli. Art teacher Helen Von Holle acts as a faculty advisor. Charmaine Gruber, Nancy Wilson, Taffy Clifton and Lisa Locy have 88 years of combined service to Cardinal Pacelli. They have touched the lives of so many children and families. We thank them for their dedicated and distinguished service and wish them the best in their retirement. SOCIAL ACTION: URGENT NEED! MEETING HEALTH CARE NEEDS IN GHANA In 2010 the Twinning Committee began a pilot project to provide health care for the needy families in Father John Agyekum’s parishes. The committee’s intention was to fill a critical need for access to health care by sponsoring government-subsidized coverage for adults and children. PTO: PRETTY TERRIFIC ORGANIZATION A recent Associated Press article about national PTA trends said, “By any measure the PTA is one of the most venerable and iconic of America’s Kim Hardewig, Barb Lamping, Diane Altmix, Carla Caruso, and Michele Daniher volunteer-based nonprofits.” Cardinal Pacelli’s all served on the PTO Board this year. PTO is a prime example of what can happen when a group of energetic, creative, and dedicated individuals come together. If your child enjoyed the Children’s Theater performance of The Gift of the Magi, ran his first road race at the Family Fun Run, or learned more about celestial Eighth graders Madeleine Morrissey, Delaney Dolle, Tristan Bentley, and Caleb Brunner represented Cardinal Pacelli at the Catholic Schools Week Mass at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral on January 31, 2012. Individuals from the Obuasi Diocese display their National Health Insurance cards. Imagine being able to provide in-patient services, oral health care, maternity care, and more, for just $20 per year for adults and $7 per year for dependent children? In 2010, the first year of the program, Christ the King parishioners responded generously by sponsoring 473 adults and children. The time has come to re-enroll the original individuals, and do what we can for the waiting list of people who qualify for enrollment. The Cardinal Pacelli Aftercare program has already sponsored 102 children during the past year; however, there are still many who are in need of our support. Please contact Joan Hilton at [email protected] to sponsor an adult, child, or family. 6 Our Lord Christ the King parish news 3223 Linwood Avenue Cincinnati, OH 45226 NONPROFIT ORG U.S. POSTAGE PAID CINCINNATI, OHIO PERMIT NO. 1269
