Don’t miss the 17th annual Manhattan Short Film Festival,
featuring 10 great new shorts from around the world and you help select the winner!
Moviegoers in Tucson will unite with audiences in over 300 cities
spanning six continents to view and judge the work of the next
generation of filmmakers from around the world when the 17th
Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival screens at The Loft.
Out of a 589 entries received from 47 countries around the
world, the Manhattan Short programmers selected 10 short
films as finalists. Each film is 18 minutes or under in length.
Countries represented this year include England, Norway,
Australia, Netherlands, France, Mexico, Germany and the USA
in what festival organizers describe as the “United Nations of
Film Festivals.” What makes the Manhattan Short Film Festival unique is that the
audience will not only be watching and enjoying the films, but
judging them as well. Each audience member will be handed a
voting card upon entry and asked to vote for the one film they
feel should win. Votes will be tallied at each participating cinema
and submitted to festival headquarters where the winner will be
announced in New York City, as well as posted on the Manhattan
Short website, on Monday, October 6 at 10:00am.
With past finalists achieving the ultimate in recognition by
being nominated for, and even winning, the Academy Award in
the short film category, the Manhattan Short Film Festival has
become known as a breeding ground for the next big thing, and
you’re a part of the action!

The New York Film Critics Series is the first-ever live national
premiere screening series. It is dedicated to producing inspiring
events in a collaborative environment and to nurturing the longterm success of better, smarter movies. Each NYFCS screening brings
prestigious, live New York City screenings of soon-to-be-released

events are moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers, and
include a preview screening of a new film prior to its national release,

Always look on the bright side of life and prepare for a massive
month of Monty Python on the big screen as The Loft Cinema
presents a moving tribute to killer rabbits, silly walks and
dead parrots – it’s guaranteed to be more fun than the Spanish
Inquisition! Monty Python’s Flying Circus started as a television
show in 1969, growing exponentially in popularity with each
passing year until finally, in 1971, the first Monty Python movie
appeared, And Now For Something Completely Different. British
comedy would never be the same again. Drawing on the crackpot
genius of its members (including Graham Chapman, John
Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Terry Jones,
to name only the proverbial few), the Python troupe combined
brainy satire with utterly ridiculous nonsense to create a new
brand of surreal comedy that inspired generations of performers.
Following the success of their first film, more (and increasingly
hilarious) Monty Python movies arrived at intervals of every few
years, even after the original, legendary television series went off
the air in 1973. From the outrageous satire of The Life of Brian to
the quotable insanity of The Holy Grail to the warped fantasy of

In The Desert is a biographical documentary on the architect and
environmentalist Paolo Soleri. It is the story of an unprecedented
artistic quest. Born in Torino, Italy in 1919, Soleri came to America
in 1946 to mentor under Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West. After
one and a half years, Soleri left Wright to embark on a blazing original

See classic art films the way they were meant to be
seen - with an audience, on the big screen!
“Gooble gobble, gooble gobble, we accept her, we accept her, one of us,
one of us!” Fresh off his success with Lugosi’s Dracula, director Tod
Browning crafted one of the most unforgettable, controversial
and utterly unique horror films of all time - a biting, ahead-of-itstime morality tale of terror and revenge set against a backdrop of
circus life. With Freaks, Browning drew upon his own experiences
working in the circus to create a firsthand look at the daily lives
of sideshow performers, a film that despite its legendarily
horrific elements, manages to make the “outsiders” at the center
of the film seems endearingly sympathetic. Freaks features
German “little person” Harry Earles as Hans, a circus performer
who falls in love with long-legged trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga
Baclanova). Discovering that Hans is heir to a fortune, Cleopatra
tricks him into marriage, all the while planning to bump off her
new husband and run away with brutish strongman Hercules
(Henry Victor). But what she doesn’t reckon with is the code of
honor among circus freaks: “offend one, offend them all,” leading
to some truly nightmarish consequences. What set Freaks apart
from Tod Browning’s earlier films (and from any other film of
the era) was the fact that genuine circus and carnival sideshow
performers were cast as the freaks. MGM production head Irving
G. Thalberg only agreed to green-light Browning’s highly-unusual
thriller if Browning agreed to humanize the characters, which
he certainly did. Nonetheless, upon its initial release, Freaks was
greeted with such revulsion from audiences that MGM spent
the next 30 years distancing themselves as far from the project
as possible, and the film was banned outright in many states,
with the ensuing controversy eventually destroying Browning’s
once-lucrative filmmaking career. For many years available only
in a truncated reissue version titled Nature’s Mistakes, Freaks was
eventually restored to its original release print and achieved cult
status and enduring popularity through an acclaimed revival at
the 1962 Cannes Film Festival and midnight screenings in the

As a lifelong Tucsonan, I’ve enjoyed watching The Loft Cinema’s
long journey to becoming the entertainment destination it
is today. I remember its original incarnation as an art house
theatre at Freemont and 6th in the 1970s and 80s, and its
reincarnation on Speedway Blvd in 2002 as a nonprofit. The Loft
has had many great moments since then. A couple that stand
out are the 2004 Tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, which
featured Q&As with Hoffman himself, and the 2006 screenings
of Brokeback Mountain, which were attended by Oscar winners
Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.
Tucson is home to a passionate and supportive film community.
Thanks to that support, The Loft continues to thrive and expand.
The addition of a third screen last year allowed for more films
and more patrons. A fourth screen, a bigger lobby, and a new
concession stand will added soon. The community’s continued
support is what makes this possible. The Loft is a vital part of our
arts community, and I am proud to be among its biggest fans.

As a young man, American Louis Sarno heard a song on the
radio that gripped his imagination. He followed the mysterious
sounds all the way to the Central African rainforest and found
their source with the Bayaka Pygmies, a tribe of hunters and

recorded more than 1,000 hours of unique Bayaka music. He is a

Siblings Karin and Simon are visiting their parents and their
little sister Clara. That evening, other relatives will be joining
them for dinner. Over the course of the day, the washing
machine is repaired, people sit together at the kitchen table,
carry out an experiment with orange peel, talk about lungs, and
sew on a button that was deliberately torn off. This sequence of
family scenes in a Berlin flat complete with cat and dog creates
a wondrous world of the everyday: Coming and going, all
manner of doings, each movement leading to the next, one word
following another. It is a carefully staged chain reaction of actions
and sentences. And in between, silent gazes and anecdotes
about experiences. The people act oddly even-temperedly; their
dialogues are direct and unemotional. Even the pets and the
material surroundings play a part. Some objects seem alive as
if by magic. Commonplace actions and familiar items appear
absurd and eerie in this narrative cosmos. In his feature film

Kumiko lives in a cluttered, cramped apartment in Tokyo with
her pet rabbit, Bunzo. She works as an office lady, robotically
preparing tea and fetching dry cleaning for her nitpicky boss.
But on her own time, she obsessively watches a weathered VHS
copy of Fargo. Rewinding and fast-forwarding repeatedly, she
meticulously maps out where a briefcase of castaway loot is
buried within the film. After hours of intense research, Kumiko
heads to the United States and into the harsh Minnesota winter
to search for it.
Inspired by an urban legend about a Japanese woman who took
a similar journey, filmmaker brothers David and Nathan Zellner
tackle their most ambitious project to date. The Zellners’ love for
lonely eccentrics remains intact, and Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim)
gives a fascinating performance as the introspective, withdrawn
Kumiko, whose increasing discomfort in the world leads her
to retreat ever further into isolation. Shot with breathtaking
precision, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter soars to transcendence
as it reveals the beauty in the quest for reality, even if that

Marking the directorial debut of artist/musician Sergio Arau,
son of Like Water for Chocolate director Alfonso Arau, A Day
Without a Mexican ponders the potentially catastrophic results
that would occur if California-based Mexicans, who make up
over a third of the state’s population, were to suddenly disappear.
The mockumentary postulates that the lack of Latino gardeners,
nannies, cooks, policeman, maids, teachers, farm workers,
construction crews, entertainers, athletes, and the world’s
largest growing consumer market would create a social, political,
and economic disaster, leaving the concept of the “California
Dream” in shambles. A uniquely entertaining blend of sharply

Sergio Arau and Yareli Arizmendi met on the set of the classic film Like
Water for Chocolate in 1992, in which Yareli starred as the “mean” sister
Rosaura. Sergio’s father, screen legend Alfonso Arau, was the director.
They have been married ever since. The two “multi-undisciplined” artists
are a true power couple, and co-wrote the indie hit, A Day Without a
Mexican, which Sergio directed and in which Yareli starred. It was The
Loft’s biggest film of the year, and we’re thrilled to bring Sergio and
Yareli back for a discussion on its 10 year anniversary.

Studio Ghibli, and is responsible for some of the most influential

Tale of Princess Kaguya, revisits a familiar Studio Ghibli theme,
telling the story of a magical girl among ordinary humans.
Okina is a bamboo cutter in ancient rural Japan. One day in the
forest, he finds a tiny baby in the folds of a bamboo shoot. He
brings the creature home to his wife Ounaa, and they decide
to keep her and raise her as a princess, though she is clearly
not of this world. Kaguya grows at an unnatural rate, quickly
maturing into an uncommonly beautiful young woman. Soon,
every suitor wants Kaguya, including the Emperor himself - but
this is not a tale of courtship. True to the Studio Ghibli that
brought us Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away, The
Tale of The Princess Kaguya follows this strange young female as
she creates her own identity. Takahata’s imagery is breathtaking
- individually drawn, hand-colored frames flow like a river of
delicate, detailed watercolor paintings. Like Miyazaki’s recent The

As a teenager, Aaron Swartz was a computer-programming
prodigy with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. After
emerging as a pioneer of Internet activism, education, and
politics, he was indicted on multiple federal charges in 2011
and 2012, setting off a complex chain of events that left the
Internet community reeling. Shortly thereafter, at the age of 26,
Swartz was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Brooklyn
apartment. His family, friends, and supporters immediately
blamed the prosecutors of the case, who aimed to put him in jail
for 35 years and brand him a convicted felon for life. Swartz was
persecuted for the very rights and freedoms for which he stood,
and that ultimately broke him. Weaving together home video
footage and anecdotal interviews from his closest confidants,
Brian Knappenberger creates a dynamic portrait of a precocious
boy who grew up to lead the Internet community into a new age

Strange things are afoot in Bad City. The Iranian ghost town,

a bastion of depravity and hopelessness where a lonely vampire
stalks its most unsavory inhabitants. But when boy meets girl,

Cinema’s first Iranian vampire western, Ana Lily Amirpour’s
debut feature basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mashup of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences
span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the
Iranian New Wave. Amped by a mix of Iranian rock, techno, and
Morricone-inspired riffs, its airy, anamorphic, black-and-white
aesthetic and artfully drawn-out scenes combine the simmering
tension of Sergio Leone with the weird surrealism of David
Lynch. Above all, Amirpour’s tale of love and squalor is fun.

paleontologist Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills

computer games, counting down the minutes until they can return
to civilian life. Amidst their boredom and clashing personalities,
issues of commitment - to friendship, love, and country - are
handled with humor and sharp-edged wit. A decorated veteran
herself (of film) with time spent at Sundance Labs, Berlinale, and
MoMA, Lavie combats the status quo by flipping genre on its
head and bending gender roles to a delightful extreme. Winner

At this very special event, legendary actors Bruce Dern and Stacy
Keach will be on hand for a lively moderated discussion that will
also include tribute reels featuring highlights from each of their
respective careers. The Loft Film Fest will present Bruce Dern
with the 2014 Lee Marvin Maverick Award, presented by Pam
Marvin, and Stacy Keach will be presented with the 2014 Bob
Shelton Award, presented by Bob Shelton.
BRUCE DERN emerged during the filmmaking revolution of
the 1960s and 70s as the epitome of a new breed of American
movie star. A virtuoso character actor who specialized in
bringing complicated men to the screen, Dern made his mark in
many of the definitive counterculture films of the era, ranging
from low-budget Roger Corman hits like The Wild Angels (1966)
to offbeat classics like Jack Nicholson’s directorial debut Drive,
He Said (1971) and the sci-fi favorite Silent Running (1972). He
also went down in film history for his role in The Cowboys (1972),
in which he became the first man ever to kill John Wayne
on screen. Whether playing Tom Buchanan in The Great
Gatsby (1974) or starring in Alfred Hitchcock’s final film Family
Plot (1976), Dern could always be counted on to make any
film more interesting by not playing is safe, bringing an edgy
originality to every role. It was his powerful performance in Hal
Ashby’s Coming Home (1978) that earned him his first Academy
Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor. Since then, Dern
has continued to surprise, entertain and delight audiences in
such films as Quentin Tarantino’s Djanjo Unchained (2012) and
Alexander Payne’s Nebraska (2013), in which his unforgettable
performance as the headstrong Woody Grant brought him his
first Academy Award nomination as Best Actor. The Loft Film
Fest is proud to present Bruce Dern with the 2014 Lee Marvin
Maverick Award for his enormous contributions to film and his
continued refusal to play it safe.
STACY KEACH is a versatile actor who has forged a longrunning career that crosses all mediums. He has found major
success in film, television and live theatre, instilling every
character he plays with a restless energy that has influenced
scores of young actors, never limiting himself to one type of
role. Starting his acting career on the stage in the ‘60s, he made
his Broadway debut in 1969 as Buffalo Bill in Indians by Arthur
Kopit, which won him a Tony nomination. Over the years, he
has garnered numerous theatre accolades, including Obie and
Drama Desk Awards. His film career began with a memorable
turn in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968), and his breakthrough
performance came in John Huston’s classic Fat City (1972),
in which he starred as a down-on-his-luck boxer opposite Jeff
Bridges. He has since gone on to star in an incredibly diverse range
of films, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972, shot
in Tucson), The Killer Inside Me (1976), Up in Smoke (1978), The
Long Riders (1980), That Championship Season (1982, opposite
Bruce Dern) and American History X (1998). He has also found
great success on television, perhaps most famously as Mickey
Spillane’s hard-boiled detective in “The New Mike Hammer”
series (1984-1987), and in the title role of the 1988 mini-series
“Hemingway,” for which he won a Golden Globe. Most recently,
he has starred in Nebraska (2013), Planes: Fire and Rescue (2014)
and If I Stay (2014), and is soon scheduled to return to Broadway
in the new revival of Love Letters. The Loft Film Fest is proud to
present Stacy Keach with this year’s Bob Shelton Award in honor
of his amazing and always surprising career.

In 1962, filmmaker Sterlin Harjo’s grandfather disappeared
mysteriously in Sasakwa, Oklahoma, and as the Seminole
community searched for him, its members sang ancient songs
of faith and hope. Harjo’s first feature-length documentary
explores the disappearance of his grandfather and the origins of
these songs. Interviewing everyday people and the faith keepers
of his tribe with his delicate touch and gentle inquiry, Harjo
traces the creation of their songs, which commemorate a great
time of upheaval from their homeland when United States policy
dictated their relocation. Along the way, he learns that his tribe’s
singing style is tied to traditions that originated in Scotland,
Appalachia, and the experiences of enslaved African Americans.
Sculpted with an aching sense of beauty, This May Be the Last
Time reminds us that despite the hardships at hand, we can sing
our way into the future and that forgiveness is essential if we

Somewhere in Ukraine, Sergey enters a specialized boarding
school for the deaf. Alone in this new and unfamiliar place,
he must find his way through the school’s hierarchy. Sergey
quickly encounters the tribe, a student gang dealing in crime
and prostitution. After passing their hazing rituals and being
inducted into the group, he takes part in several robberies and
begins to work his way up the chain of command to become
pimp-protector for two of the girls, who turn tricks at the local
truck stop. Finding himself in love with one of the, Sergey
ultimately breaks all the unwritten rules of the tribe, with tragic
consequences. An exhilarating experience in pure cinema, The
Tribe launches the viewer into an unfamiliar new world while
remaining completely riveting. Winner of three awards at this
