Out of a 589 entries received from 47 countries around the world, the Manhattan Short programmers selected 10 short films as finalists. Each film is 18 minutes or under in length. Countries represented this year include England, Norway, Australia, Netherlands, France, Mexico, Germany and the USA in what festival organizers describe as the “United Nations of Film Festivals.” What makes the Manhattan Short Film Festival unique is that the audience will not only be watching and enjoying the films, but judging them as well. Each audience member will be handed a voting card upon entry and asked to vote for the one film they feel should win. Votes will be tallied at each participating cinema and submitted to festival headquarters where the winner will be announced in New York City, as well as posted on the Manhattan Short website, on Monday, October 6 at 10:00am. With past finalists achieving the ultimate in recognition by being nominated for, and even winning, the Academy Award in the short film category, the Manhattan Short Film Festival has become known as a breeding ground for the next big thing, and you’re a part of the action! Monty Python’s Flying Circus started as a television show in 1969, growing exponentially in popularity with each passing year until finally, in 1971, the first Monty Python movie appeared, And Now For Something Completely Different. British comedy would never be the same again. Drawing on the crackpot genius of its members (including Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Terry Jones, to name only the proverbial few), the Python troupe combined brainy satire with utterly ridiculous nonsense to create a new brand of surreal comedy that inspired generations of performers. It is the story of an unprecedented artistic quest. Born in Torino, Italy in 1919, Soleri came to America in 1946 to mentor under Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West. After one and a half years, Soleri left Wright to embark on a blazing original course of his own. With Freaks, Browning drew upon his own experiences working in the circus to create a firsthand look at the daily lives of sideshow performers, a film that despite its legendarily horrific elements, manages to make the “outsiders” at the center of the film seems endearingly sympathetic. Freaks features German “little person” Harry Earles as Hans, a circus performer who falls in love with long-legged trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova). Discovering that Hans is heir to a fortune, Cleopatra tricks him into marriage, all the while planning to bump off her new husband and run away with brutish strongman Hercules (Henry Victor). But what she doesn’t reckon with is the code of honor among circus freaks: “offend one, offend them all,” leading to some truly nightmarish consequences. What set Freaks apart from Tod Browning’s earlier films (and from any other film of the era) was the fact that genuine circus and carnival sideshow performers were cast as the freaks. MGM production head Irving G. Thalberg only agreed to green-light Browning’s highly-unusual thriller if Browning agreed to humanize the characters, which he certainly did. Nonetheless, upon its initial release, Freaks was greeted with such revulsion from audiences that MGM spent the next 30 years distancing themselves as far from the project as possible, and the film was banned outright in many states, with the ensuing controversy eventually destroying Browning’s once-lucrative filmmaking career. For many years available only in a truncated reissue version titled Nature’s Mistakes, Freaks was eventually restored to its original release print and achieved cult status and enduring popularity through an acclaimed revival at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival and midnight screenings in the ’60 and ‘70s. I remember its original incarnation as an art house theatre at Freemont and 6th in the 1970s and 80s, and its reincarnation on Speedway Blvd in 2002 as a nonprofit. The Loft has had many great moments since then. A couple that stand out are the 2004 Tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, which featured Q&As with Hoffman himself, and the 2006 screenings of Brokeback Mountain, which were attended by Oscar winners Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Tucson is home to a passionate and supportive film community. Thanks to that support, The Loft continues to thrive and expand. The addition of a third screen last year allowed for more films and more patrons. A fourth screen, a bigger lobby, and a new concession stand will added soon. A virtuoso character actor who specialized in bringing complicated men to the screen, Dern made his mark in many of the definitive counterculture films of the era, ranging from low-budget Roger Corman hits like The Wild Angels (1966) to offbeat classics like Jack Nicholson’s directorial debut Drive, He Said (1971) and the sci-fi favorite Silent Running (1972). He also went down in film history for his role in The Cowboys (1972), in which he became the first man ever to kill John Wayne on screen. Whether playing Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (1974) or starring in Alfred Hitchcock’s final film Family Plot (1976), Dern could always be counted on to make any film more interesting by not playing is safe, bringing an edgy originality to every role. It was his powerful performance in Hal Ashby’s Coming Home (1978) that earned him his first Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor. STACY KEACH is a versatile actor who has forged a longrunning career that crosses all mediums. He has found major success in film, television and live theatre, instilling every character he plays with a restless energy that has influenced scores of young actors, never limiting himself to one type of role. Starting his acting career on the stage in the ‘60s, he made his Broadway debut in 1969 as Buffalo Bill in Indians by Arthur Kopit, which won him a Tony nomination. Over the years, he has garnered numerous theatre accolades, including Obie and Drama Desk Awards. His film career began with a memorable turn in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968), and his breakthrough performance came in John Huston’s classic Fat City (1972), in which he starred as a down-on-his-luck boxer opposite Jeff Bridges. He has since gone on to star in an incredibly diverse range of films, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972, shot in Tucson), The Killer Inside Me (1976), Up in Smoke (1978), The Long Riders (1980), That Championship Season (1982, opposite Bruce Dern) and American History X (1998).
