Yoga has returned to World of Nutrition! Classes are twice a week, on Tuesday
and Thursday evenings from 6-7pm. WON has all the props that you need for the
class including mats but feel free to bring your personal mat if you have one.
These classes will be focused on the beginner yogi. The classes will support those
who are brand new to yoga but will also be appreciated by those who have a practice
and want to fine tune some of their postures. During these classes time will be spent
breaking down certain poses each week and offering adjustments to help you find
a comfortable variation of the pose that works for your body. We understand that
we all have different body types and different things going on in our bodies that
can make some poses more uncomfortable than others. In these classes you will
discover that yoga truly is for EVERY BODY. Students are encouraged to have fun
in the class and to feel free to ask questions when they arise.

Yoga @ Home: Tadasana - Mountain Pose
During the holiday season it is easy
to get lost in the hustle and bustle of
everything going on around us. We
may become overwhelmed with the
crowds while out shopping or get caught
up trying to find the “perfect” gift for
someone and we tend to overindulge on
heavy and sugary foods.
This month I
would like to
focus on a pose
that can help
you to ground
yourself when
there is so
much going
on around
you. Tadasana
(mountain
pose) is one
of the most
basic postures in yoga. It allows us to
ground down through our feet and build
strength and stability so that we can
make better decisions.
To come into Tadasana, stand with the
feet about hips distance apart. You want
to try to keep the feet parallel to each
other and you can do this by lining up
the second toes. Make sure the heels
aren’t shifted inward or outward. Ground
down through the four corners of your

feet (that’s

mound,
pinky toe ball mound and the two sides
of the heel), then use the muscles of your
foot to pull the arch upward. The feet
should feel strong.
Moving up the legs,
begin to contract
the quadriceps
muscles giving
a slight lift to
the knee, avoid
hyperextension of
the knee.
Bring the pelvis to
a neutral position
so that the hips
are neither too far
forward nor too far back.
The abdominal muscles should be
contracted and the heart should be open.
Allow the shoulder blades to softly move
in towards the spine to help keep the
heart (front of the chest) open.
Finally allow the head to be in line with
the rest of the spine, not allowing the
chin to fall forward. Ultimately the ears
will be over the shoulders, shoulders over
Page 11
the hips and hips over the heels (stand sideways next to a mirror to check your
alignment at home). Then let the hands softly fall open to the front and you are
standing in the anatomical position, aka Tadasana.
Once in the pose, close your eyes and imagine roots growing from your feet down
into the floor. Hold the pose here for a minute or two. Allow yourself to recenter
and really tune into the ground supporting you. Take several deep breaths as you
stand allowing the abdomen to rise and fall with each breath. Then bring your hands
together at the center of the heart and offer a moment of gratitude for all that you
have. Knowing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, doing exactly
what you are supposed to be doing.

We live in a world that is increasingly
overwhelming due to constant advances
in modern science and technology.
We are bombarded with Internet
data, genetically modified foods and
pesticides, toxic industrial chemicals,
processed and packaged foods, and
pollution in the air, water and soil. A
fast paced lifestyle creates anxiety and
depression, while increasing cortisol
levels interfere with insulin and raise
blood pressure. Our body’s tissues and
organs become damaged from physical,
chemical, metabolic and psychological
stress. As a result we are exposed to
dangerous lifestyle-related chronic
diseases.

Himalayan Salt Lamps
By: Brenda Farrar
WON Staff Member
Have you ever been near an ocean or
a waterfall and noticed how refreshed
you feel both mentally and physically?
That’s due to the abundance of
negative ions that surround these
natural places.
Himalayan Salt
Lamps emit
negative ions,
creating the
same type of
invigorating
environment.
Salt lamps
attract moisture
from the air to
their surface, where,
due to the warmth, the
moisture evaporates quickly.
This evaporation produces negative
ions. Pollen, dust, dirt, pollutants,
and allergens in the air all carry a
positive charge, which suspends them
in the air. The negative ions neutralize
these positive ions so they can no
longer be airborne. Numerous studies
show that negative ions boost mood,
relieve seasonal affective disorder,
World of Nutrition December 2015
and improve breathing problems such
as asthma. People using salt lamps
quickly report improvements in their
physical and mental well-being. Due
to their calming colors in shades of

To achieve the
best results,

of your home

you spend the most

also wise to place them in
rooms that contain several electronic
appliances. The ambient light creates a

properties, protects the liver, regulates
diabetes, preserves bone, and boosts
the immune system by increasing white

Healthy Happy Pets
Animal Lovers!
This information
is for all of us
who have those
extra special
family members,
and by that I
mean the ones we all love with four
legs. Animals are individual souls with
unique personalities, and this is why we
want them to live as long as possible.
The health and wellness of your animal
is directly related to their food and
nutrition. They need to supplement
their diet just as much as we do. So what
supplements should you use for your
sweet little creatures?
Omega 3’s
An animal’s
body produces
some fatty acids
naturally, but
not all of them.
Omega 3 fatty
acids can only
be obtained from diet. Omega 3 fatty
acids include Alpha-linolenic acid
(ALA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA),
and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA

is the workhorse of the omega 3s and is
incorporated into the cell membrane.
DHA plays a role in a healthy nervous
system. Omega 3’s are very effective at
preventing disease and illness in your
pet.
Arthritis, Joints, and Inflammation:
EPA helps to reduce harmful
inflammation that can cause disease
and affect joint health. Omega 3’s can
increase joint mobility and fluidity.
Dull and Dry Hair Coats:
Animal hair coats respond very well to
Omega 3 supplements. Studies show that
a deficiency in Omega fatty acids results
in dry and damaged hair coats.
Allergies and Autoimmune
Conditions: Allergies and autoimmune
conditions can be caused from the
immune system over reacting to outside
stimulants or the animals own biological
make up. Essential fatty acids can
lessen the effects of these inflammatory
reactions.
Seizures and Epilepsy: Essential fatty
acids seem to decrease the excitability
of the neurons in the brain. It can help
Page 28
decrease seizure frequency and intensity.
*On a personal note my dog does
suffer from epilepsy, and he was having
a seizure about once a month. After
starting him on the Nordic Naturals
Omega 3 Pet he has not had a seizure in
about 3 months!
There are not any known side effects
from the use of omega 3s with dogs and
cats. Always use a pet formulated omega
3 supplement and follow the dosage
levels that are recommended on the
bottle. For the best results use Nordic
Naturals brand, as all of their omega
3’s are produced in triglyceride form.
This means that your furry little loved
ones body will absorb omega 3’s more
efficiently.
Coconut
Oil
Coconut Oil
has incredible
health benefits.
Many of us
have heard how coconut oil is great for
us humans, but it is also great for our
feline and canine friends. Coconut oil
is 90% saturated fat and has awesome
antimicrobial, antibacterial, and
antifungal properties. A spoonful for
dogs, or 1/4 of a teaspoon for cats, of
coconut oil on a regular basis can greatly
benefit your pet.
World of Nutrition December 2015
Skin health:
Improves overall skin health and reduces
allergic reactions, due to its antifungal
and antioxidant properties. Coconut oil
can clear up multiple skin conditions
such as eczema, flea irritations, contact
dermatitis, and itchy skin. Since it is an
incredible emollient, applied topically to
the skin, coconut oil can moisturize the
most dehydrated skin. It also promotes
the healing of cuts, wounds, hot spots,
bites and stings.
Digestion: Coconut oil is an excellent
source of nutrition as well as an
incredible source of medium chain fatty
acids (MCT). Consumption of coconut
oil on regular basis also increases
nutrient absorption. Coconut oil helps
with colitis and inflammatory bowel
syndrome. Coconut oil can cause loose
stools, so if this happens add a spoonful
of canned pumpkin to your animal’s
food.
Arthritis: Coconut oil contains Lauric
Acid, Capric Acid, and Caprylic Acid.
Each of these MCTs aid in easing and
improving arthritic symptoms and
ligament problems. Coconut can support
mobility and flexibility in joints.
Diabetes and weight loss: The MCTs
in coconut oil support thyroid function
and balance. This helps overweight dogs
lose weight, and makes sedentary dogs
Page 29
feel more energetic. Coconut oil helps
to prevent diabetes by regulating and
balancing insulin.
*There are no known side effects from
the use of coconut oil with dogs and cats,
but if your dog is sensitive use only a ¼
teaspoon per 10 pounds of your dogs
total weight. It is always a good policy
to start small anytime you are adding a
supplement to your animals diet.
Vitamin
C
Arthritis and Joint:
Vitamin C is critical for retaining
healthy amounts of collagen. It is very
helpful in degenerative joint disease,
hip dysplasia and spinal disorders. For
arthritis it is best to use an ascorbate
form of vitamin C with flavonoids. The
ascorbic acid form of vitamin C is harder
on the stomach and can irritate the
arthritis. The flavonoids will help reduce
inflammation in the joints. So your best
friend can run faster and jump higher.
*Daily Dosing: 125 mg of Vitamins C for
small animals. 250 mg of Vitamin C for
a medium sized dog. 500 mg of Vitamin
C for a large dog. There are no known
major side effects for giving your dog
vitamin C.

stress, a regular dose of vitamin C can
help protect and maintain optimal
health.
Immune System:
Vitamin C helps boost the immune
system in animals. Vitamin C improves
immune function by enhancing white
blood cell function and activity. Some
veterinarians even suggest giving vitamin
C to dogs before and after vaccinations,
when exposed to contagious diseases,
and/or pregnant and lactating dogs.
Vitamin C also helps treat kennel cough
and other respiratory infections.
