Come Out, Come Out to Play!
A
nd that is just what members have
been doing this year! Coming out
to play with their cars!
Is it because the membership is growing?
Or is it because so many of our members
are having such a good time? No doubt,
a little of both! This past Spring’s social/
technical events had record turnouts, and
the 2011 autocross season is seeing more
members behind the wheel becoming
better drivers, with A/X practice.
For good reason too! Events are fun, and
a great place to share in their passion
with fellow enthusiasts. Have a question?
Need a resource? Members have been
sharing information at club events for
years! No one is a better resource than an
MBCA member, whatever it is a technical
question, or just where to find something
you might need, another member knows
the answer. Attending events is the
fountain for answers.
This year GWS members have been
regularly attending Cars and Coffee in
Great Falls VA, a two-hour Saturday
morning event where well over 100 people
bring out all kinds of interesting cars, from
BMW Isetta bubble cars to Bentleys. It is
a place for members and others to share
their enjoyment of the car hobby!
June provides the opportunity for GWS
member teams to show off on the race
track at the LeMons Race during Capitol
Offense at Summit Point Raceway. Last
year, we had one team running this year,
there are four competing for the coveted
bags of nickels, in cars that cost less than
$500. The hilarity of the race is matched
only by the determination of the teams!
Come out and cheer each team of fellow
GWS members to a win!
For those of you looking towards the
Summer Picnic, we are changing it up
this year! A new twist, a popular vote
Funcours. Come out and enjoy yourself
with fine cars, good music, delicious food,
great friends and so much more!
Looking forward to our Annual D-I-Y
Event at American Service Center? It
has been moved to October 15 because
of the extensive renovations that ASC’s
Arlington, VA dealership is undergoing.

imes have changed, and people have changed!. It is all part of life, and with that this
club and section have also changed. And we need new people to get involved to help in
running the business of the Greater Washington Section.
I want to thank Jon Renthal for his devotion, and the time he put into being our section’s
Treasurer. Recently Jon stepped down from an officer’s position so he can continue to focus
on his health. We all wish him the best, and look for him to be back involved in the club
again very soon.
Now, I ask you, as members of the club, to step up and become involved in the Section.
We need a new section Treasurer! The job involves using Quickbooks to keep track of the
Section’s finances, and to make reports on them. The job also involves attending regular
meetings, and working closely with the Officers and Board of Directors of the Section as they
manage the club. You will help develop the budget and handle the day-to-day finances of the
Greater Washington Section. Several of us have held this office, so you will not be going into
it without support. If you would like to be a part of this, please contact me to discuss the
responsibilities of the position.
Along the same lines, the section needs someone to manage our communications and put
together our newsletter, letting everyone know about all the things that go on in the largest
section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. We publish four times a year, and produce
a number of stories promoting our events, both upcoming and past, to the automotive
enthusiast public.
If you want the club to do something that you think others would enjoy, come aboard and
become involved! (It is all a part of running of this club on a hands-on basis.)
You will notice on page 14 there is a request posted for those positions that need to be filled.
The Board has a lot of fun working together, and we know you will enjoy being a part of this
group of dynamic volunteers that run your club!

he 2011 Picnic “Funcours” and Flea Market will be held
for the eighth year on the lawn of Steve and Barbara
Newby’s home in North Potomac. Again this year, you
will find good music, tasty food, fine libations, good friends
and a terrific selection of fine
Mercedes-Benz’s on display. If
you need yet another reason to
attend, come sell and shop for
automotive-related items at the
GWS Flea Market.
Instead of an officially judged
Concours d’Elegance, we will
hold a “Funcours,” where the
judging will be done by you!
Numerous categories, with
multiple winners in each, will
encourage those who may not
have shown their MercedesBenz before. Every MercedesBenz driven to the event can
be eligible for an award, from daily drivers to show cars. We
encourage cars under or in the process of restoration to come
out as well. If you can drive it, bring it and show it off! The
only recommendations are that you wash and vacuum the car.
All are eligible for awards!
As for the cuisine, it’s a picnic, so plan on great burgers and
brats, as well as all the usural delicious picnic goodies. There
will be beer, a nice selection of wines as well as sodas and water. Please remember to tip the bartenders, as this event helps
us raise funds for the Joe Wozney Fund in the MBCA Educational Foundation with a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and, of
course all of the tips our bartenders rake in! So tip generously!
We encourage everyone to bring items to contribute to the
silent auction. (Given that we are trying to raise money for a
worthy cause, we respectfully request that you not donate any
items that have been the subject of numerous “re-giftings.”) For
those items you do not wish to donate but would rather sell, it’s
back for 2011, the much beloved GWS Flea Market!
Brush up on your haggling skills, and price your stuff to sell!
Start cleaning out the garage, boxing up all the Mercedes-Benz
or other auto-related items you have been storing, be they
rims, wheels, filters or gaskets, even cars! What about those
tools that you were just sure you were going to use, and didn’t?
Have a car for sale? Well, this is your chance! What will be for
sale? Any auto-related items: jewelry, objects d’art or items that
are near and dear to an auto fancier’s heart. We ask that you

refrain from selling such non-automotive items as personal,
household or garden goods, or any white elephants that no one
wants! We do ask that you take home anything that does not
sell, and not leave it behind for us to clean up!
Please be sure to register early, so we know how many cars to
expect and how much food to order. Pre-register to participate
in Concours or the Flea Market. The cost to attend the picnic
is $20 per person, in advance, and $25 at the gate. There is
no additional fee to show your car. As always, member’s kids
under 21 are admitted free with a paid member. Take a space
at the Flea Market for $10, tables and chairs are available for
$15 per set.

utocross and track events are in full swing! Our regular
Autocross season has been going strong again this year
and will continue through the summer into the fall.
We are back at James Wood High School, 161 Apple Pie
Ridge Road, Winchester VA 22603, where we held the A/X
season last year. Dates have been confirmed for the season!
It is about a 90-minute drive from the Beltway, or you can
use Route 7 and the Dulles Greenway if you want a more
direct route, though time is offset by the cost of the tolls.

LEGENDS OF THE AUTOBAHN CONCOURS
RETURNS TO MONTEREY HISTORICS WEEKEND
IN AUGUST 2011
After a very successful 2010 inaugural year, the Legends of the Autobahn: West Coast Summer Concours returns as part of the Monterey
Historics Weekend in 2011 on Friday, August 19. Co-hosted by MBCA, the BMW Car Club of America, and
the Porsche Club of America, Legends of the Autobahn is one of the “must see” attractions of this worldrenowned automotive weekend.
The one-day event brings enthusiasts, owners, and aficionados of distinctive German cars together to view
some of the finest marques in the world. Held on the greens of the Rancho Cañada Golf Club in Carmel
Valley, California, Legends attracted an audience of over 1,000 to view the 250 cars on display in 2010.
“With Mercedes-Benz as a featured marque at the weekend’s famed Pebble Beach Concours, it’s sure to be
an epic weekend for Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts,”according to Laura Simonds, MBCA National Treasurer.
For those interested in entering the Concours (pre-1992), a $60 entry fee will apply. For those wishing to
display only (any vintage), a $30 entry fee will apply. Spectators are welcome with no admission fee.

An Everyday - Enterprise Rental - 2011 C300 Sport
The W204 C Class interior is roomy for driver and passenger,
but leg room for rear passengers can get tight if either are on
the tall side or like the seat back. This model had basic power
seat functions, and the console/armrest had plenty of storage
inside. The two level glove box was roomy with plenty of
storage space, and featured an air vent to keep it cool. The
dual front to back cup holders also worked well to hold more
than just a water bottle, like an iPod or other electronics.
The W204’s trunk is quite roomy and there was no stuffing
in suitcases or the other various items I was carrying for my
10-day trip. I was also impressed with the use of space within
the engine compartment, and could see that this model was
designed to accommodate more than just the base engine.
R
ecently I had the opportunity to attend MBCA | Alabama
Section’s Heimatfest 2011, held at Barber Motorsport
Park outside of Birmingham, Alabama. Because this was an
MBCA event where the cars were as much a part of the event
as were the members, I picked up a new 2011 C Class sedan
from my local M-B dealer’s Enterprise rental fleet to drive to
the event.
This was your basic, no-frills service loaner, and it provided
me with a chance to experience the W204 RWD first hand.
The size of the vehicle is excellent for everyday driving,
with an excellent turning radius and very good handling,
especially in sport mode, where the transmission tends to be
a little more spirited, as opposed to the fuel saving economy
mode.
However, my first impression was that for a base model,
the 3 liter engine and seven speed automatic transmission is
very powerful for daily driving as well as highway situations.
After taking it on a parade lap at the Barber Motorsports
Park Track, it made me yearn to try out the 350 or AMG 63
version, as this one was a bit out of breath when I stomped on
the accelerator. Because I was on a budget, the fuel sipping
virtues of the 300’s engine were perfect with MPG’s in midto upper-20’s in town and low 30’s on the highway, cruising
at posted highway speeds, using $4 a gallon premium
gasoline.
The black-on-black in the sport trim gave the vehicle a classic,
though athletic look. The durable M-B Tex was impressive.
The dash and door panels had faux wood trim, making it
feel a bit more upscale than a previous C300 I had driven
with brushed aluminum trim. Although not equipped with
navigation, satellite radio or MBrace®, the standard audio
system had weather band, a classic Mercedes-Benz touch,
very helpful when traveling to follow weather conditions
along the way. The unit was Bluetooth® equipped and easily
connected to my mobile phone, making it safe to talk hands
free.

To test its handling and sportiness, I attended our section’s
autocross. The electronics caused the car to correct itself
during maneuvers around pylons, cutting power, keeping the
operator out of trouble, just as it should if it were in a realworld situation. Once the program was defeated through
the steering wheel controls, the car maneuvered excellently
with only a hint of the advanced electronics. On the road, I
took it on the legendary Tail of the Dragon in the Smokey
Mountains. An eleven-mile road with three hundred and
eighteen curves from Tennessee into North Carolina. This
twisty road traverses up and down hills deep in a heavily
wooded National Forest. A road that you do not want to
speed along, but quite that fun to drive in the right car. The
C300 was sprightly and handled well on the tight hairpin
turns, the right car for this kind of drive!
Leaving the mountain roads and heading back to the
Interstate, while driving through a small town, the local
constable saw me and quickly turned around and tailed me
until I reached the town limits. A black-on-black MercedesBenz, even one that is a stripped down rental car, turns
heads!

and 250SL. He was also one of the first mechanics ever
to work on the famous 600 limousine. During the next six
years, Norbert became not only proficient in the repair
of these vehicles, but also logged more hours on these
historic and significant vehicles than probably any other
specialist in the world today.
From 1966 to 1968 he worked for Mercedes-Benz
of Canada in Toronto as a Mercedes-Benz Contract
Technician. In the summer of 1968, on a sightseeing
trip to New York and Washington, D.C., he fell in love
with the United States and accepted a job at HBL in
Fairfax, Virginia. Since 1969, Norbert has been working
exclusively for Mercedes-Benz dealers in the Washington
area, pleasing thousands of clients in various positions
such as Technician, Quality Control Manager, Shop
Foreman and Assistant Service Manager. In addition to
his unique professional credentials, Norbert has been a
member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America since
1974 and has served as President/Vice President of the
Greater Washington Section from 1986-1994.

The Section Needs YOU!
Come Help Out & Have Fun!

WS could use your energy and enthusiasm as we
grow. We are looking for members to be active on
the MBCA \ GWS Board to help do what we do best!
Section Treasurer: The Section needs someone who
is organized and good with accounting. This Spring
our GWS Treasurer Jon Renthal stepped down due to
health issues. We could use your organizational and
accounting skills! Requires attending up to 8 meetings a
year and handling the section’s finances and budget.
Concours Chair: Like looking at Mercedes-Benz’s,
have an eye for detail and an interest in working with
the membership to develop judges? Concours Chair sets
up and runs the Concours events throughout the season
for the Section.
Communications Chair: Using the printed word,
pictures and reaching out to the public to tell the
story of the Club and Section. This position involves
production of the newsletter, and other PR aspects of
the section.
Other Areas of Interest: There are always projects,
committees and events that can use your help. If you
want to do something fun, no doubt others will as
well, so offer to do it as part of the Greater Washington
Section. Volunteers are Always Welcome!
