A Note from Gabrielle Byam, Camp Director
This year the Summer Spectacular students had 3 weeks in which to get ready,
and though they have amazing natural talents, I attribute their understanding of
the stage and all its particulars to a dedicated group of teachers and staff.
Bravo to the teachers of Summer Spec, and bravo to the awesome
administration for all your support.
Thank you parents for entrusting your children to us! Thank you for continuing
to support the arts.

Director’s Notes
When I first read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I was an 8-year old boy with a severe
allergy to chocolate. So, while I loved the book, it made me keenly aware that I couldn’t eat
any of the delectable sweets mentioned, like the Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight,
Charlie’s bar of choice. Nonetheless, the book was, and still remains, at the top of my all-time
favorite books. And now I get to direct a production of Roald Dahl’s classic here at the Hippodrome, starring a cast of delightful, creative young actors! It has been, as always, a thrill to be
able to teach, collaborate with, and even learn from my cast. Heartfelt thanks to the parents
who have entrusted their children with us this summer. Special Standing-Ovation thanks to
the following for their time and endless creativity and dedication: Karen Arnold, Rachel Wayne,
Ariel Reich, Amanda Yanes, and Jed Daniels. Go-Team thanks go to fellow Summer Spec teachers Gabby, Niall, Ed and Rachel Abrams. Also, a shout-out to my teen helpers, Jahnice Dixon
and Gillian Manning, without whom rehearsals would resemble a scene from Lord of the Flies.
Enjoy the show!

Director’s Notes
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a timeless tale of pure magic and joy. It is a tale of what
it is to be a child; to live in the moment and enjoy the small things. It is also a cautionary tale.
The children we raise are representations of ourselves, the good and the bad. I have been
fortunate to work with an amazing cast of children in this production. I appreciate all of the
hard work and diligence they have poured into this production. I also want to thank my stage
manager, Rachel Abrams. She was an irreplaceable, integral part of organizing everything
you see today. She, along with my teen helpers, Maia Thompson, Sydney Steinberg, & Leila
Bakr helped immensely with the herding of cats and the keeping of sanity... I cannot thank
you all enough. Lots of awesomeness and designing gratitude to Rachel Wayne for costumes,
Karen Arnold for properties, Jed Daniels for lights, and Amanda Yanes for sound. Also, big
props to Gabrielle Byam, Matt Lindsay, Ed Bonahue, Marcia Brown, Gillian Manning, and
Jahnice Nixon for running and teaching the Hippodrome Summer Spectacular!

Director’s Notes
Thank you Roal Dahl for writing this incredible tale! Mr. Dahl wrote James and the Giant Peach
in 1961, and the themes and messages throughout the story are timeless. James Trotter
faces injustice, cruelty and some seriously mean aunts. Through it all, he manages to remain
a kind, wonderful human being.
I am so grateful for all the fine young actors in this production. My assistant director Ed Bobahue is a brilliant young man with endless amounts of patience, and I believe much like James
he is good when no one is looking. Special thank you to sound designer Amanda Yanes and
light designer Jed Daniels. Rachel Wayne is wonderful! She designed all the costumes for the
shows, and they are fantastic! Special thanks to Karen Arnold for creating the the props. Excellent job! Thanks to the teachers for all the hard work and the amazing staff of the Hippodrome
for being the best co-workers in the world!!!
“If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and will always look
lovely.” - Roal Dahl
