September 2016 sees the birth centenary of the nation’s most beloved authors – Roald
Dahl. A writer, poet and screenwriter, he is probably best known for his ever popular
children’s books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG and Fantastic
Mr Fox. These tales weave magic, joy and comedy with the macabre and grotesque to
appeal to both children and adults. The same qualities characterised his
screenwriting as well his autobiographical tales of childhood and youthful adventures.
This week BBC Radio 4 is celebrating Roald Dahl’s extraordinary life and works with a short
series of dramatisations, readings and documentaries. These programmes will all be available
on BBC iPlayer Radio after broadcast. There are also a small number of television clips still
available which could be of use in both primary and secondary school settings.
Boy BBC Radio 4, 2 July 2.30pm
Patrick Malahide provides the voice of Dahl in this colourful adaptation of Roald Dahl’s
collection of tales about his own childhood.
In His Words BBC Radio 4, 2 July 8pm
Roald Dahl’s granddaughter, Sophie Dahl weaves her own childhood memories of her
grandfather with extracts from the BBC archive in which he tells his own remarkable life story.
Going Solo BBCRadio 4, 3 July 3pm
Two-part dramatisation of his gripping overseas adventures as a young man. Stationed in
Tanzania, Dahl experiences ‘a world as bizarre and surprising as any you will find in his fiction.’

5 part series of darkly comic tales written by Dahl, narrated by Charles Dance and with
appearances by actors such as Toby Jones, Celia Imrie and Penelope Keith.
A Gremlin in the Works BBC Radio 4, 7 July 11.30am
With exclusive access to some of Dahl’s original papers, illustrator Gerald Scarfe tells the story
of how the Disney film version of Dahl’s first children’s book, The Gremlins, never actually
made it into cinemas.
