Emmy makes the cover of the Spotter!!
What a thrill to see my bitch, Emmy, CH Bridlewise Pretty in
Pink, CGC on the cover of the Spotter! I had been a devoted pet
owner of our beloved breed for over thirty years, but with the
arrival of Em, I realized a lifelong dream - to own a champion
Dalmatian. Emmy is my dream come true dog!
Emmy finished her championship with a major under Mrs. James
Edward Clark. In the following three months, she received several
BOB's and several group placements. It really is a credit to her
that she finished, because she was handler impaired on many
occasions. Together, we learned, unlearned and re-learned many
things, until we finally got it right.
Quincy, pictured above, is Em's housemate. He helped provide
her call name. Remember the old TV show, Quincy, M.E.? Well,
Emmy is M.E. The spelling was changed because folks reading
her name pronounced it 'me'.

Emmy makes the cover of the Spotter
(continued from front page)
Emmy is not just a show dog. She is a valued member of our
family and home, and as typical of the Dalmatian nature,
she is quite a character. By six months of age, she let herself
out of her mesh crate. She might have succeeded earlier but
previously she had not been in it. She was regularly
checking the refrigerator by nine months of age, so we now
keep a bag of carrots in the bottom corner of the fridge. Em
is a water dog who loves to swim and play in water. She
opens the sliding glass door and lets herself out often. The
most amazing thing I have seen her do is to push a chair
over to our china closet, and climb on it, attempting to reclaim a valued toy which I had confiscated. Emmy is
currently participating in the Distance Log Program.
Many thanks are in order to those that helped us on our
way:
~Donna Kauffman of Bridlewise Dalmatians - Thank
you for entrusting Emmy, the love of my life, to me. But
more importantly, thank you for all your help and
encouragement along the way. Donna you are a gem! I love
you, and as you know, Em does too! ~ Maureen & Mike
Deer of HatTrick Dalmatians - Thank you for not only
providing the other side of Em's pedigree, but for all the
technical help you gave me. Thank you. You are the best!
~ Debbie Zink - I am and will be forever grateful, Debbie,
for your assistance! ~ Carol Carlin, our conformation and
handling instructor - Thanks for not giving up on us, and all
your kind words. ~ Members of the Greater Pittsburgh
Dalmatian Club - Thank you for providing the
encouragement that I really could do it. ~ My husband
Bob who has tolerated so much and still kept smiling!

The Winning Ticket!
How Emmy became a cover model!
At the 2003 National Specialty in Strongsville, Ohio, I bought
a raffle ticket to support the Spotter, our National Dalmatian
magazine. The prizes were the opportunity to put your dog
on the cover of the Spotter, free priority mailing for a year,
or an interview published in the Spotter. I don't know about

you, but I always consider raffles as donations; I never
expect to win a drawing. Much to my surprise, absolute
shock, really, this time I won. When they called my name I
didn't even want to accept the prize, but the people at my
table urged me on, and I claimed my prize.
They draw three alternates for the cover prize, and I can
clearly remember thinking I'd give the cover up to one of
them. Here we were at Nationals with all these gorgeous
Dalmatians and what could I possibly put on the cover. I
only had Emmy, sure she was a Champion, sure I think she
is gorgeous, but there are lots of really, really gorgeous
Champions out there, surely one of them should be on the
cover.
The next day I had so many people mention Emmy on the
cover that my mind was starting to change. The funniest
part of this whole story is that when I was showing Em, I
always wore a coat on her. She had a pink terry coat that
you wet in ice water to cool her, she had a pink rain coat,
she had a winter coat that was fleece lined(my car has no
rear heating and she would be shivering in the winter) and
some of the other folks showing in conformation would
secretly call her Cover Girl. Little did they know how correct
they would be?
Anyhow, after I got home I got an email from the Spotter
editor about the cover, the picture, the cost, etc. I wrote to
her about my reservations and what could I possibly put on
the cover. Her response was to use my champion bitch and
use her name. Emmy's show name is CH Bridlewise Pretty in
Pink.
I contacted tons of photographers. She had her picture
taken numerous times. One picture was taken at the
Century III mall and they use her picture in advertising
occasionally. I happened to go to the Pittsburgh show last
year. One of the vendors had the most gorgeous pictures of
dogs, many unusual poses with props that were really neat
and different. I made an appointment and brought Em the
following day. The picture on the cover is that picture. It
was done by Tom Wiegand of The Winning Image.
Check out his website, www.thewinningimage.com. I love
that picture of Em. I hope you like it, too!

THE KID’S SPOT
By: Emily King
It was a normal day or so I thought! Envy had her best
dog friend over. Hanna, a Border Collie. One thing Envy
liked to do was jump up into my clubhouse and slide
down the slide. Well Envy jumped up in the playhouse
and slipped! Her leg got caught in the ladder!! As any
smart owner would do, I lifted her up and gently and
put her on the ground. I was scared because I knew
my puppy was lying on the ground screaming and in
pain. I was afraid Hanna would attack Envy, so I took
Hanna in the house and got my Dad. I couldn’t believe
it. Envy had broken her leg! They rushed her into the
vet’s office!! She had a broken leg. It was broken in 3
places!!! Well she has had her broken leg for almost 3
months now! She is doing well. In Jan. she might even
get all her pins and needles out! The vets say she will
be good as new!
UPDATE
A True Story
Envy is doing well and has had two of the four pins
removed and will soon have the other two removed.
She is walking well and has no signs of a limp.

LaDonna & Ken King are to become grandparents for a second time later this year. Emily is finally getting a for real
cousin. Justin & Holly are expecting their first child in Sept. YAY!!!
Emily King and her grandmother member, LaDonna King have just finished illustrating a children's book called from
“Darkness to Color”. The book was written by LaDonna’s sister. It is written for children in the 7-10 year age range
but adults enjoy it too. If anyone is interested in having a copy they can let me know. (LaDonna also has several copies
of a novel written her brother called “Dogs Are People Too” and would be glad to loan them to anyone that is
interested in reading it. They are both fun and easy books to read.
