Multiple techniques will be discussed including Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and payload processing using an FPGAenabled Ethernet switch. There is considerable interest in the broadcast industry to migrate legacy SDI (Serial Digital Interface) video to some form of reliable transport over Ethernet and IP based networks. The benefits of this technology include greatly simplified cabling plants, far great efficiency, ease of signal routing and processing, and significant cost savings utilizing a shared infrastructure. However, as this migration occurs, many audio and video processing capabilities that exist today in the world of SDI must be made available on packet-based networks. One such capability is the seamless switching of video. Current industry standardization efforts for packetized transport include SMPTE 2022-6 (video over IP) and AVB (Audio Video Bridging). This demonstration will be centered around the use of the new Aspera Drive, our new desktop file sharing, synchronization and collaboration solution, based on Aspera’s fasp transport technology, and feature a wide array of available cloud services. Aspera Drive will be used to upload large media files to the cloud at maximum speed, where on-the-fly transcoding during the upload will be performed using the Zencoder/Brightcove platform (hosted in the AWS cloud). Aspera Drive then allows users to browse and download all available formats for review/approval. Final content will then sent to Akamai and Google Storage (YouTube) for distribution. We will also demonstrate an archival workflow whereby a copy of the critical content can be seamlessly moved from the Microsoft Azure cloud to the Amazon Web Services infrastructure. Attendees will get a forward-looking insight at what is now possible to achieve in the cloud for media companies and broadcasters and share technology best practices in the implementation of cloud-based and hybrid workflows. These reduced bitrates enable content providers, network operators and over-the-top service providers to distribute exceptionally high quality video with faster downloads and smoother streaming on bandwidth constrained connections. Our video optimization technology is based on a unique perceptual quality measure, which has much higher correlation with subjective results than existing quality measures such as PSNR and SSIM. Based on our quality measure, we determine the subjective quality level of the video stream, and use this information to control the video encoding process and reduce the output bitrate. Beamr Video can control both software and hardware H.264 encoders, helping them make smarter decisions based on true visual quality. At the HPA demo room we will be showing two videos side by side, an original video and the same video at half the bitrate after Beamr Video processing. We challenge you to identify the optimized stream. We hope you enjoy the HPA Tech Retreat this year, and look forward to meeting you in the demo room, and in the Breakfast Roundtables that we will be hosting every day. Multiviewers are integrated. The DYVI interface can be tailored to accommodate the number of input signals and layers required, and easily extended by adding additional modules. Operators also have the option to run several systems in parallel giving more flexibility and built-in redundancy should a module fail. The DYVI approach also reduces CAPEX/OPEX and allows for easy implementation, support and upgrade. Contact: Whitney Seven Email: Phone: [email protected] Cell: 503-222-3212 Elemental will demonstrate real-time HEVC video processing in the cloud at HPA 2014. The demonstration will feature Elemental Cloud, a Platform as a Service (PaaS) built to securely manage high-volume video processing with scale and elasticity. The platform automatically provisions and dynamically scales virtual Elemental systems, and can seamlessly integrate those resources with on-site infrastructure to instantly expand video processing capacity. This flexibility enables major studios, post-production houses and other media companies to rapidly enhance multiscreen video offerings, grow audiences, generate greater revenues and decrease capital expenses. The HEVC standard represents a significant advancement in video compression technology. It harnesses an expanded set of tools and algorithms as well as improved parallel processing capabilities to enable compression efficiencies that allow media companies to create high-quality video assets at increased resolutions with reasonable bit rates. This results in reduced video storage and transmission costs while paving the way for higher definition content to be delivered to consumers. From a software standpoint, Elemental is one of very few companies in the world with experience implementing multiple video codecs from specification to full implementation. The Elemental video processing architecture not only meets the performance requirements of HEVC but is also programmable and simple to upgrade, as required by evolving specifications and emerging technologies. The complexity involved in HEVC encoding is an excellent fit for software-defined video processing solutions such as those from Elemental, which seamlessly evolve from one compression generation to the next and mitigate the risks that come with any large technology migration. Custom made encrypted files are not supported natively in MAC OSX making them incompatible. It's a typical post-production scenario when ProTools, Avid and Final Cut systems are only compatible with native files during authoring and editing. Incompatibility of Mac OS can be a limiting factor for many new and innovative solutions, such as encryption of sensitive content and in cloud based workflows. When Fortium created MediaSeal it had to develop a system level filter driver in Mac OS and Windows to control how the 'modified’ files are read by opening applications. Files had to be accessed without alteration or delay in relevant editing programs without any noticeable effect. This method used was not previously possible and now opens up many possibilities for other applications. A file system filter driver is an optional driver that adds value to or modifies the behaviour of a file system. Typical applications for file system filter drivers include antivirus utilities, encryption programs, and hierarchical storage management systems. This has received much interest among post-production professionals and MediaSeal encrypted video www.mediaseal.com is actively used by a range of sound and picture editing studios including at NBC Universal. Most color systems rely upon mappings into amounts of CIE 1931 x_bar y_bar and z_bar color matching spectral functions. Doing so leads to a “one size fits all” approach which provides general usefulness, but lacks specific ingredients required for greater accuracy. In particular, the average viewer’s color matching “cone fundamentals” vary with subtended viewing angle, as well as with viewer age. Further, individual viewers often vary significantly from the average. Utilizing average cone fundamentals specific to age and screen subtended angle, as well as camera sensing spectra and display emission spectra, an image pipeline is created which can more carefully process and reproduce color. In particular, more specifics of the spectral behavior can be included in the color processing pipeline. In addition, the HDR gd10 color rendering system can optionally be applied yielding a pleasing look from native camera input-referred spectra sensing functions, via cone fundamentals, to outputreferred emission spectral color in HDR. Using the gdemos HDR floating point codec, realtime decoding to a UHDTV screen demonstrates the image appearance which can be achieved using spectral color processing. Contact: Jean-Francois Nivart Email: [email protected] Cell: +32 495 23 00 08 Beside its real-time JPEG 2000 encoder for 4K60p content, Image Matters proposes a method to certify JPEG 2000 encoding quality and to statistically track and improve image production quality. The encoded image file is recovered from the storage, decoded and compared with its source uncompressed picture. Multiple quality measurements are performed in parallel and results are attached as metadata to the encoded file. The quality of each picture of the content is measured through the classical PSNR value but also through multiple values representing the standard deviation of each image frequency sub-band. User defined quality threshold enables warning or alarm about any deviation from expected quality. Statistical analysis on result provides a valuable source of information for image quality improvement all along the production chain and for image encoding. In order to keep the pace of the post-production process, the certification process runs in parallel to the encoding process itself at up to 60 frames per second for 4096x3112 image resolution. This method relieves the necessity of double quality control at post-production house. It provides an encoding quality certificate that would accompany the content as metadata along the distribution chain. At present, videos are transported and stored uncompressed into many systems such as cameras, video servers, displays, recorders or mobile devices. Tiny in FPGA, fast in CPU, TICO can be utilized as a smart upgrade path to manage HD and higher resolution (4K, 8K…) workflows and frame rates as it assures visual quality up to 4:1 compression ratio, but keeps power and bandwidth at a reasonable budget. On top of this, its selectable latency down to as little as 1 pixel line ensures absolute real-time and instant operation. The technology is for instance an excellent candidate to carry 4K60p video data over 10GEth or over 3G-SDI . Conscious that we need new smart ways to manage the higher resolutions and frame rates previously captured, stored and transported uncompressed, intoPIX has pushed the boundaries of today's compression technology with a state-ofthe-art, light codec assuring visual quality, keeping power and bandwidth at a reasonable budget and reducing significantly the complexity and cost of the system without adding any latency. "Spectral Signature" is a radical technique for maintaining a constant spectral balance in a reliable and repeatable way. The underlying principle is a 13 band dynamic equaliser which, unlike a traditional EQ, compares the incoming audio spectrum to a pre-defined "mask" and adds or removes energy only where required to match the measured spectral response to the reference response curve. A major application for the post environment is ADR or voice over recording. Consider an example of an animated movie where the characters have to be voiced by actors. No matter how good they are, over the period of the session, their voice quality, tone, timbre and dialogue intelligibility will vary from beginning to end. Spectral Signature solves this inconsistency by first capturing the "ideal" spectral curve of the voice to create the reference mask and then applying frequency related gain or attenuation so that the actual recorded voice spectrum does not change. The Junger V*AP is the first product to incorporate this technology and also includes a full dynamics processing (compressor/expander/limi ter), de-esser and fully CALM compliant loudness management. Typically 'pre-mixed' video description is broadcast as an alternative audio track. Unfortunately the small percentage of users requiring this service means provision often needs to be mandated. To encourage wider adoption, the production of specialized audio services must be as economic as possible, but without compromising on usability. Traditionally, a trained 'describer' identifies points in the audio timeline where a description is needed (and can be placed) and produces a script. This process has much in common with captioning, but is almost always done separately. Typically, the 'describer' will also record the individual voiced segments, although sometimes this is performed by a 'voice talent'. The recorded audio segments are referenced from the script, and then this is typically produced as a full-length audio track for mixing with the original audio. The description track may be 'pre-mixed' to create as a separate audio track in advance, or live mixed with the original audio at play-out. Live mixing typically uses a mono description track and a control track which contains pan and fade information controlling how the description should be mixed with the original audio. Screen will be demonstrating the use of Text-To-Speech for Video Description content production. Recent research indicates that users would be happy with computer generated speech if it leads to more provision. Where provision is being increasingly mandated, the economics may suggest that Text To Speech is a viable alternative particularly for non-premium channels. The Screen solution supports both 'pre-mixed' and play-out mixing of video description. Screen will be demonstrating tools for the creation, editing and review of description scripts, tools for automatically generating video description audio tracks using Text To Speech (including a mixing control 'warble track') and discussing workflows for merging the generated video description with existing program audio tracks. Tessive is demonstrating a method for quickly and precisely measuring a camera’s optical resolution. Unlike traditional structured line-pair or zone-plate charts, a chart with a frequency-limited random noise pattern is used. Because the chart is essentially homogeneous, there’s no alignment necessary for the software to key to the image. Also, the optical system measurement is performed at every point across the camera’s sensor, so we get information about the lens sharpness across the entire field of view. At every point on the sensor, we produce a two-dimensional modulation transfer function (MTF). This image sharpness information can be very useful for testing camera setups, either during design or in the field. Because the chart and algorithm are straightforward, the test can be performed by end-users. This can be used for setup validation and could be built in-camera or into monitors. Having precise numerical sharpness functions at every point on the sensor is especially useful for image correction. Modern digital cameras have many areas of potential sharpness loss intrinsic to their design. It is reasonable and probably desirable to design a precise digital restoration filter targeted to the exact signal attenuations that happen in front of the sensor. With the information generated by our method, this becomes very straightforward. Tessive will be demonstrating both the noise-pattern MTF measurement technique as well as the resulting data from several camera setups. Also, we will show how this data can be easily used to create output camera images with flat sharpness response (unity MTF). Current practice is to design and deploy processing (Compute, Storage & Network) hardware in isolated silos, or with enough capacity to handle “peak load plus” for shared infrastructure designs. However, increasing competition and divergent requirements will cause the extinction of rigid and costly architectures based on worst-case assumptions. Instead, workflow-centric designs linked to a SoftwareDefined System model will transform how resources are allocated to the production and distribution of content; improving speed, maintaining reliability, and lowering costs. A Software-Defined System (SDSys) enables central control over the full range of computing resources – processing, storage, network, and security; in pursuit of a real-time, self-optimized 'system.' At the model’s core is an intelligent separation of control-plane and functional duties: rather than statically update configuration parameters on each device in a pipeline, SDSystems place key functional duties under the direction of the SDS Controllers, transforming rigid infrastructure into adaptive systems capable of workflow-directed reconfiguration, deterministic operation, and continuous optimization in service to schedules and deadlines. The VPSA™ service providers pure OpEx storage-as-a-service (monthly fee with no commitment) which can be grown on the fly, shrunk, or deleted at project's end. VPSAs are highly reliable, can grow to 100TB+ per VPSA (with no limit on the number of VPSAs), and are fully configurable. By selecting - in real time - the drive types, RAID levels, caching and access protocols, customers configure their VPSAs to meet the specific performance, reliability and cost their projects require. And, thanks to dedicated resources allocated at the time of customers' requests and never over-subscribed, performance is consistent over time and data privacy is assured. The VPSA service is also available at data centers elsewhere in the U.S. and worldwide and offers the built-in ability to automatically replicate data from any VPSA location to any other VPSA location. One can connect to VPSA in three ways. First, CoreSite customers can connect via the CoreSite Open Cloud Exchange (OCX). This is the most flexible and most quickly provisionable method. Second, CoreSite customers also have the option of connecting via cross-connect (dedicated rack-to-rack fiber). This method usually entails a long-term commitment. Third and last, one can connect via an external fiber circuit. This last option allows connection to servers and workstations residing outside CoreSite.
