Unfavorable results of various causes including those of iatrogenic origin will be discussed. It is widely regarded that one of the best forms of learning is from our mistakes and it is from this experience that significant progress is made in the advancement of the science. This program is intended for plastic surgeons, fellows and residents interested in expanding their knowledge on this subject. Having experts who can show us how to get out of trouble and treat or salvage a difficult situation is the basis of this symposium. The clinical assessment and management of complex reconstructive and aesthetic problems and disorders will be discussed in depth. Various areas of the head, neck and craniomaxillofacial regions will be included. The talks will cover problems of congenital, post-traumatic and aesthetic origin. The regions selected for discussion include the cranium and orbital areas including bone and soft tissue. Aesthetic and reconstructive problems of the nose will be addressed. Analysis of the structural and functional disorders and re-operative techniques in rhinoplasty will be emphasized. The ear is a complex structure of composite tissue. Reconstruction of congenital and traumatic deformities is difficult. Post-reconstructive deformities can be even more daunting. Our expert faculty will review these problems. An expert otologist will discuss the timing and criteria for reconstruction of middle ear problems. Distraction osteogenesis has been a great advance in many areas of the human skeleton. It has shown to be very useful in the craniomaxillofacial skeleton. Our expert faculty will discuss how to use distraction in cases of complex structural abnormalities and what to do when distraction does not go precisely as planned. The area of cleft lip and palate has been discussed widely. However in this symposium, the faculty will provide a clinical assessment of complex secondary disorders in cleft lip and palate. The timing and techniques used to address these secondary deformities of the lip, nose, maxilla, and palate will be discussed. The soft tissue elements of the face are key to the final reconstruction and aesthetic outcome. New development and applications of fat grafting and soft tissue fillers will be reviewed. An in-depth analysis of pitfalls and preventive measures in facelifting will also be assessed. Throughout this symposium there will be interactive discussion with question and answer periods from the faculty and audience to provide a dynamic and highly educational experience. registration fees on or Before 6/30 After 6/30 ASPS or ASMS Member/ASPS Life Inactive $500 $600 Guest Physician $645 $770 Resident/Fellow (with letter of verification)/ ASPS Life Active/Allied Health Professional/ Office Personnel/Spouse/Guest $350 $450 A cancellation policy applies as referenced in course brochure. 10 SPECIAL PROGRAMS - Friday, September 23 day at a glance - friday [701] Residents Day 10:00am - 3:00pm [915] Achieving Optimal Patient Outcomes: Utilizing Current Trends in Aesthetic Injectables 10:30am - 12:30PM [605] Core Essentials of a Successful Non-Surgical Practice 11:00Am - 4:00pm [703] Hot Topics 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM 12:00pm - 4:00pm [606] Sculpture for the Plastic Surgeon Through the collaborative efforts of the faculty, this course will review the newest products and latest trends with injectable products for facial aesthetic enhancement/ rejuvenation. The ability to remain objective, report without bias and free from prejudice are the steadfast tenets of journalism. But, what happens when the reporter goes from storyteller to subject in an instant? Look no further than ABC News correspondent, Bob Woodruff. Assigned to the frontlines of the conflict in Iraq in January of 2006, Woodruff was seriously injured when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle. The attack initially became a touchstone to teach the world more about the vulnerability of reporters who risk their lives to keep the public informed, but in its wake the brain injury Woodruff sustained left him impaired to tell that story. That attack in Iraq continues to serve as the subject of the story, and today fortunately places Woodruff back into the role as its storyteller; a vantage point that allows him to teach us about the brain’s ability to sustain injury and the power of perseverance. From the best-selling book that he co-authored with his wife Lee, In an Instant, to the establishment of the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation for Traumatic Brain Injury (BWFF), that financially assists the military with cognitive rehabilitation and care following a traumatic brain injury suffered in service to their country, Woodruff’s contributions toward raising awareness for brain injuries have spanned the globe and netted him a 2008 Peabody Award for his reporting on the subject for ABC News. Patients of Courage, Plastic Surgery 2010 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGEONS® Patients of Courage The ceremonies will include a moving tribute to the Patients of Courage honorees. The program recognizes inspirational/ exemplary reconstructive plastic surgery patients, nominated by their ASPS Member Surgeons, whose lives were changed or saved by plastic surgery and have since been paying the favor forward to others in need. The Use of CAD-CAM Technology in Plastic Surgery: An Update on Virtual Computer Planning for Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Head & Neck Reconstruction David Hirsch, MD, DDS; Jamie Levine, MD; Oren Tepper, MD The development of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) has had a tremendous impact on various industries in terms of planning, design and fabrication. CAD-CAM technology also has the potential to revolutionize our current approach to plastic surgery. Areas that have proven amenable to this paradigm shift include free fibula reconstruction of the mandible, complex maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, and elective craniofacial surgery. Using CAD-CAM techniques, each of these clinical scenarios can be approached through “Virtual Surgery”. 3-D virtual surgery involves 3 phases: (1) a planning phase, (2) a modeling phase, and (3) a surgical phase. In the planning phase, 3-D CT scans can be manipulated so that an ideal postoperative result can be designed. In the modeling phase, surgical guides are designed that can be applied intra-operatively to aid in oncologic resection, donor site harvest and bony alignment. In the surgical phase, the virtual plan is executed with the application of pre-fabricated splints and jigs. The application of this technology for each of these areas (mandible reconstruction, maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, and craniofacial surgery) will be reviewed. .5 Hand/Upper Extremity [IC 208] Management of Common Congenital Anomalies of the Hand Michael Bentz, MD and Robert Havlik, MD This course covers common congenital hand anomalies and addresses accurate early diagnosis, nonsurgical and surgical treatment options, perioperative care, and patient safety issues including patient selection and management of complications.
