Descriptionandhistoryofevent:
TheWheatRidgeCarnationFestivalbeganin1969whenthecityofWheatRidgewasfirstborn.Itisone
oftheoldestandlongestrunningfestivalsinthestateofColorado.Thenameofthefestivalhonorsthe
slogan“CarnationCapitaloftheWorld”thatwasgiventothearealongagowhenWheatRidgeandthe
surroundingareaactuallynumbered32differentgrowersatonetime!Duringthe1960’s,abouquetof
freshcarnationswasdeliveredtotheWhiteHouseeveryMondaymorninganddisplayedinthefront
foyerwithacardstating:“Withcomplimentstoournation’scapital,WheatRidge,Colorado,
CarnationCity.”
TheCarnationFestivalcontinuestocelebratethecity’sheritageandbringthecommunitytogethereach
yearinAugustforanannualendofsummercelebration.Asitentersit’s47thyear,theCarnationFestival
willbere-energizedwithseveralnewelementsthatcreateevenmore“festivalfun”forattendees.The
CarnationFestival,Inc.isaregistered501c3non-profit,volunteerorganizationwiththesolepurposeof
producingtheAnnualWheatRidgeCarnationFestivalforthebenefitofthecommunityandnumerous
non-profitgroupsinWheatRidge,CO.

OneofthefavoriteattractionsoftheCarnationFestivalistwonightsofSpectacularFireworksand
addingtothedrawistheZoppe’ItalianFamilyCircus,whichjoinedtheWheatRidgeCarnationFestival
in2012.Thisvintagecircushasgrowninpopularityeachyear.Oneofthelastone-ringtraveling
circusesleftintheU.S.,theZoppe’sbringtheirenchantingexhibitionofoldworldEuropeancircusto
WheatRidgeasthefestival’smainattraction.TheZoppe’familyentertainsaudiencesinthesamegrand
traditionastheirancestorsdidover160yearsago.
ThespecialengagementoftheZoppe’CircusextendsintoSundayandincludestheAutomezziXXVI
ItalianExoticCarShow,ACelebrationofItalianMotoring,whichdrawscarenthusiastsfromtheentire
FrontRange.Over150Italianautomobilesandmotorcycleswillbeondisplay.Donationsreceivedatthe
AutomezzibenefittheJuvenileDiabetesResearchFoundation.
