With so much of the world moving to accessing information on their Smart phones,

If you will not be able to access the newsletter electronically and would like
to continue to receive it quarterly, please write and let us know.
We will continue to print and mail you a copy.
Our mailing address appears on the back of this newsletter - top left.

sublime mix of sacred, classical, ambient and Celtic inspired music.
Wendy began violin lessons at age three, with supplemental training
in piano and voice along the way. Her love and passion for music
in its many forms extended throughout her education with diverse
experiences ranging from the Portland Youth Philharmonic to
the Mark O’Connor Fiddling Camp. Goodwin’s improvisational
giftedness and training have freed her from the written line and she

Spotlight on Summer Concerts in Yamhill County
Nothing says summer like an outdoor concert, especially in Oregon. Since our summer season is short but
sweet, you’ll have lots of options for listening to fabulous live music this summer. Midweek, weekends, in town,
a little further out, or maybe even quite a drive, you can hardly miss hearing great live music somewhere during
every week in June, July and August.
WILLAMINA’S WILDWOOD MUSIC FEST:
Americana and Roots Music Festival - Fri & Sat, July 19th and 20th, 2013
One of the most impressive musical lineups appearing in Yamhill County this summer is part of a weekend
extravaganza of local and nationally-known musicians in a seemingly unlikely concert venue.
If you missed the very first experimental event in 2011 or even last year’s official First Annual Music Fest, you’ll
want to save the dates this year and attend the Music Fest at the Roshambo Artfarm in Sheridan, a pastoral
setting at the base of the Coastal Foothills just outside Willamina in an ancient basalt rock quarry at the edge of
a hay field.
Producers Katie and Meredith Kendall have made
preparations for the weekend event, expanding the
music, art, and food options this time around. They
are encouraging people to come and camp for one
or two nights but note: NO dogs allowed.
Tickets are available through eventbrite.
You can find all the info at their website:

Oregon-Based Musicians scheduled to perform
Some of these artists and musicians may be familiar to you and some may be yet-to-be-discovered favorites in the making.
Sassparilla Portland, Oregon-based outfit Sassparilla has been referred
to as indie-roots, punk-Americana, and punk-roots. But it’s the subtleties and
folk-pop leanings of their latest, The Darndest Thing, that find this five-piece
band slowing things down a bit – and growing up musically. Sassparilla offers one
of the most entertaining, sweaty live shows in the Pacific Northwest. Complete
with dancing, sing-along numbers, and plenty of good times.

Hillstomp
Portland Oregon blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for
digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music,
recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of doit-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit
of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from
assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar.
www.hillstomp.com
Water Tower
After 5 years on the road, 4 albums under their belt and multiple international
tours, Water Tower has been brewing up a storm in the folk music world. They have toured extensively in both the USA and abroad, and performed
live on the BBC, NPR, and RTE. Based in Portland, Oregon these young
gents got their start busking on street corners playing traditional old time
and bluegrass, eventually honing their sound as a solid dance band playing
square dances and bluegrass festivals up and down the west coast. Their latest
recording is a 5-song EP recorded in Portland at Type Foundry Studios called
“Where the Crow Don’t Fly” and showcases the band’s original songwriting,
diverse arranging, and solid playing. www.watertowerbucketboys.com
Truckstop Darlin’ Truckstop Darlin’ comes out of the amazing
music scene of the Great Northwest, more specifically, Portland, Oregon.
Despite being loud and thundering, Truckstop Darlin’ wear their hearts
on their sleeves; if Wilco grew up listening to Lucero’s harder moments, it
might sound something like this. Their live shows are a sweaty, fist-pumping
riot soaked in cheap beer and whiskey and while most bands who fall under
the alt-country umbrella focus more on the country part, Truckstop Darlin’
keeps their amps turned up. These boys play honest, driving rock n’ roll. www.truckstopdarlin.com
The James Low Western Front
The James Low Western
Front is a simultaneously fearsome and droll four-piece band from Portland,
Oregon, playing American Roots music with a distinct outsider-country vision.
The voice belongs to James Low, both as vocalist and songwriter.

Jeffrey Martin
Writing about things
he doesn’t understand helps Jeff Martin make
sense of the world around him. The mystery of
songwriting is what draws him to the craft, and it
is this mystery that leaves the listener breathless
and amazed at the remarkable character of this
passionate artist. “I don’t sit down to write a song
so much as I’m sat down by a song,” Martin will
say. A sucker for muddy sounds, he likes the odd
hiss and crackle, perhaps a chair squeak, in a
recording. It is precisely those sounds that reminds
him that a living soul is moving about, pouring
their soul into the moment. At just twenty-six years
old, Jeff Martin is a product of Eugene, Oregon.

Hip Hatchet
Hip Hatchet is the songwriting project of
Philippe Bronchtein. Based out of Portland, OR, Hip Hatchet
presents rustic, carefully orchestrated folk songs. Like the songsmiths before him, Bronchtein places emphasis on the songs’
lyrics that revolve around loneliness, camaraderie, home and love.

The Harmed Brothers
Consisting of lead
vocalists Ray Vietti on guitar and Alex Salcido on banjo, Alec

band’s origins go back to teenagers playing music in the rural

on the West Coast in Oregon, and the Kilmers on the East Coast
in Western North Carolina. It was in the small forest town of
Cottage Grove, Oregon, where Vietti met and teamed up with
Salcido. In 2010, Ray and Alex released their debut album All
The Lies You Want To Hear. The album, and the band’s highenergy stage performance garnered the attention of record labels
and producers alike. The Harmed Brothers chose to release their
next album on the indie label Lackpro Records. In May 2012,
The band released their long-awaited sophomore effort Come

Ben Rice
brings real vintage blues into the modern era.
Twisting soul, roots blues, and west coast blues with rockabilly,
funk, and rock. Ben Rice, as Lloyd Jones put it, “gets it.” Already
established as a virtuosic guitar player, his soulful voice and
inventive twists on blues are creating a buzz up and down the West
coast. Rice’s last all original CD “Pour Me Some Whiskey” is being
praised as being among the best CD releases from the Northwest.
Although Rice is young, he is experienced. Playing along with some
of the top musicians in the National Blues Scene. First picking up
WKHJXLWDUDWÀYHKHQRZKDVHLJKWHHQ\HDUVRISOD\LQJQXPHURXV
awards, nominations, and a music degree from the University
of Oregon. In a music world saturated with young guitarists, his
reputation is building. Not as a “hot rod guitar player” but as a good
band leader, great songwriter, wonderful performer, soul inspiring
singer, and a guitar player that can do it all, “Of course he does, it’s
Ben, he can do everything.”
Since September 2012, Ben Rice has been teaching Jr. High and
High School students Mariachi Band instruments at an after school
program through the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg. The program is supported by the Chehalem
Cultural Center, the Newberg Public School District and individuals like you. If you would like to help support
this program financially, please contact the Chehalem Cultural Center - 503-487-6883.

For many years, the Humlie Kids were weaned on the music of yesteryear. They learned the music song by song, rhythm

music. They would love to record a music album (CD) for all to enjoy their music. In fact they have already begun the
recording process, but they need help to go the distance. The Humlie Trio Music is absolutely breathtaking, and highly
inspirational. The time has come, and their music is for the time.
Would you like to help them reach their goal?

Celebrating commitment to our community, Carlton’s Walk in the Park
– a benefit for local charities – combines fabulous artists and musicians
with outstanding local restaurants and wineries for one magical summer
weekend in Yamhill County’s wine country. Last year’s Carlton’s Walk in
the Park was a great success, with both an increase in attendance as well as in income generated from the event.
Thanks to all who attended, contributed and volunteered!
Since its inception in 2003, Carlton’s Walk in the Park has raised over $225,000 to support local community
and civic organizations including food banks, education, police and fire departments and athletics.
This grassroots event began with the vision to give back to the communities of Yamhill and Carlton. To date,
this event has done so much more. Carlton’s Walk In the Park is more than a summertime celebration.
Graduates recognized for artistic achievements
The Arts Alliance of Yamhill County presented $1,800 in awards this spring to six graduating seniors from the county’s
high schools who have distinguished themselves in the arts.
The $800 Marg Johansen Scholarship went to Bridget Keaveney, a senior at the Sheridan Japanese School. Keaveney
has not only excelled in visual arts but also has shared her talents in community service, according to the teachers who
recommended her for the award. She is a member of both the National Honor Society and the National Japanese Honor
Society. Last year she organized an art show that incorporated themes of acceptance and social issues. This year she has
taught eighth- through 12th-grade students a class called Change, in which the history of oppression toward women
was discussed, along with ways to address it. She also has been a summer-camp and after-school peer tutor in Japanese.
Keaveney plans to major in studio art at Mills College.
The award is named for Marg Johansen, a weaver and educator who died in 2004. She was an active member of the
local arts community, and her work can be seen in many locations internationally. The Marg Johansen Scholarship is
presented annually by the Arts Alliance of Yamhill County (AAYC) to a graduating high school senior from Yamhill
County who exemplifies artistic achievement and intends to pursue further education in an arts-related field, including
visual arts, music, dance, theater or creative writing.
The Arts Alliance also presented $200 Student Recognition Awards to five graduating seniors from Yamhill County.
These students were nominated by teachers and counselors at their high schools for outstanding achievements in the arts.
This year’s recipients were:
•
Raul Rodriguez, Dayton High School;
•
Cydney Simpson, McMinnville High School;
•
Sebrina Arruda, Sheridan High School;
•
Ida Aaron, Willamina High School;
•
Matthew Garand, Yamhill-Carlton High School.
AAYC depends on contributions to make these awards possible. To receive further information or make a donation for
arts awards, please call (503) 472-3784.

Meet Pat Angland, who is an incoming member
of AAYC’s Board of Directors. She will be serving
a two-year term as secretary. She’s been living
in Yamhill County since 1992, and retired from
McMinnville School District in 2005. Pat has been
volunteering, serving on the Education Committee
for AAYC since 2005.
Pat began her artistic endeavors in second
grade as a director of the many variety shows in her
neighborhood, and they raised some coin for the

cards and is active in the local group that meets and
designs the cards at the McMinnville Senior Center.
Creative writing is her newest passion, and Pat is
a member of a local writing group. She also has
helped with the Terroir Creative Writing Festival for
several years.
Pat has served on the AAYC Board before,
beginning a year or so before Currents Gallery
opened on Third Street. She researched cooperatives
from British Columbia to Berkeley in the year prior
to the opening. She also helped craft the structures
that still serve to support the membership. Her two
years as acting director of the gallery were active
and exciting. She hopes to bring that enthusiasm
and energy to the Board of Directors of AAYC.
“The Arts Alliance mission, of nurturing the
creative spirit in all, is a fabulous goal,” Pat says,
“because it is the creative that feeds our spirits.”
