In early 1939, America’s rigid immigration laws made it virtually impossible for European Jews to seek safe haven in the United States. As deep-seated anti-Semitism and isolationism gripped much of the country, neither President Roosevelt nor Congress rallied to their aid. Yet one brave Jewish couple from Philadelphia refused to silently stand by. Risking their own safety, Gilbert Kraus, a successful lawyer, and his stylish wife, Eleanor, traveled to Nazi-controlled Vienna and Berlin to save fifty Jewish children. Steven Pressman brought the Kraus’s rescue mission to life in his acclaimed HBO documentary, 50 Children. In this book, he expands upon the story related in the hour-long film, offering additional historical detail and context to offer a rich, full portrait of this ordinary couple and their extraordinary actions. Drawing from Eleanor Kraus’s unpublished memoir, rare historical documents, and interviews with more than a dozen of the surviving children, and illustrated with period photographs, archival materials, and memorabilia, 50 Children is a remarkable tale of personal courage and triumphant heroism that offers a fresh, unique insight into a critical period of history. Lunch provided. TICKET PRICES: BOOK PRICE: $15 by Oct 22, $20 thereafter Order your signed book: $18 by Oct 22, $24 thereafter HOLOCAUST HEROISM FILM SCREENING AND DESSERT RECEPTION AT RCC CULTURAL ARTS CENTER, SUFFERN NY Sponsored by Merri & Dr. Ned Braunstein, Rockland Community College and Holocaust Museum & Study Center THURSDAY, NOV 6, 7:30PM HBO DOCUMENTARY: 50 CHILDREN The Rescue Mission of Mr. & Mrs. Kraus NARRATED BY ALAN ALDA In the spring of 1939, a Jewish lawyer and his wife left their comfortable home and two children in Philadelphia and embarked on a bold and improbable plan to rescue fifty children from Nazi-controlled Vienna. Despite the oncoming horrors of the Holocaust, Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus bravely traveled into the heart of the Nazi empire in an effort to save innocent lives. Their unlikely mission would turn an ordinary American couple into extraordinary heroes. Their incredible story has never been told...until now. “Heart-wrenching, thrilling, and above all relevant” —The New York Times GUEST SPEAKER STEVEN PRESSMAN Steven Pressman, writer, director & producer of the film 50 Children, expanded upon the story in his book 50 Children, offering additional historical detail and context to offer a rich, full portrait of this ordinary couple and their extraordinary actions. TICKET PRICES: $15 by Oct 22, $20 thereafter $36 (reserved seating) by Oct 22 $50 (reserved seating) after Oct 22 INTRODUCTION BY DR. Eighteen years old, an Orthodox, spirited, Jewish-American, Phyllis Chesler, from Brooklyn embarked on a passionate love affair with a glamorous foreign student. Upon arrival in Afghanistan, authorities seized Chesler’s passport. She found herself trapped as the property of her husband’s polygamous family. Despite her seclusion, her in-law’s campaign to convert her, and her husband’s attempt to tie her to the country through childbirth, she escaped. Yet, these lovers have remained connected for a half century. Phyllis Chesler is a legendary feminist leader. She has appeared on CNN, Fox News, NBC and NPR. Her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The Times of London, National Review, The New York Times, Salon, and Jewish/ Israeli media. TICKET PRICES: INTRODUCTION BY DR. But Jacob is consumed with hatred and cannot rest until he has killed his brother’s murderer, a concentration camp guard nicknamed the Rat. Jacob and Sarah, the only Jews in Heidelberg, fall in love. As Jacob waits for the Rat to come home, he is beset by doubt. If he fulfills his oath and kills him, he will undoubtedly be caught, and Jacob’s and Sarah’s new life will die too. Timeless dilemmas torture the young lovers and threaten to tear them apart. What is more important, love or hate? The past or the future? Revenge or mercy? Jacob’s Oath is both a painful love story and a riveting thriller with a very tricky ending indeed. Martin Fletcher is one of the most respected television news correspondents in the world.
